    I lived in Manea 1975 to 1980
Working on a Pig / Arable farm.
It took about a year to be accepted into the village life.
Once accepted, a whole new world unfolded, you were a part of their lives.
    I was introduced to "Kenties"
An ALE HOUSE on the river bank.
Literally a house where you could go, sit in his living room, and your beer would be brought to you from his kitchen.
My wedding reception was held in The Lamb and Flag at Welney.
    17th September 1977
The "Major" in this film was the Landlord then.
I have so many memories of that time.
    Simply Wonderful 👍

fantastic film, to think I was stationed at RAF Wattisham near Ipswich in 1975. Loved my time there visiting the old pubs, drinking Tolly cobold and greene king beer

Ernie's lovely accent reminds me of long ago times spent with my mum's family, who were from Stretham. Her dad was a Fenland horseman, as mentioned in this film.

A novel about the Fens and life around Ernie's time is Waterland by Graham Swift. It's well worth reading.

Fascinating. I'm tracing my family history, and on my dad's side (long deceased) it's a story of Fenland hundreds of years ago, travelling via Beds, Bucks and Herts into East London. Guess what my surname is, which stretches back through time? FENN! The name really does connect with the Fens!

My job as a customer engineer took me across the Fens in the 1970's. In the summer it was a beautiful landscape, but in winter when the thick fog descended it was bleak.

Fantastic film, the digitally enhanced footage even better than the DVD i have. Remember watching this when i was a kid, since read the book written by Ernie's daughter. What with the peewits and drumming snipe it's like reminiscing about a lost age and men who lived a simpler, happier life in conjunction with the natural world.

My favourite tv clip on youtube, nice to see it digitally tidied up, I used to fish in this area in the early 1970's, though sadly didn't go i n the pub. I prefer the original music soundtrack though, wonder why it was changed?

    • @FenlandOnFilm
      @FenlandOnFilm  Рік тому +2

The music had to be changed due to copyright reasons sadly - we would have preferred to keep the music from the original too but did our best to replace it with something as close as possible.

Catching eels and shooting wild birds is illegal now though, and it's not worth going to prison over?
