Maria's mood in this song is super relatable. After you have a positive encounter with a person you're into, you all of a sudden feel like you're walking on air, like you're the belle of the ball, and it just feels fantastic, and then your best friend might look at you like "what am I going to do with you?"
Such immediate attractions very often turn out to be mere infatuations. But when and if they last, then the experience is indeed very magical and very special. The tragedy is when one suddenly feels that way and the other remains totally unmoved, as was the situation in my case when I was struck speechless by a female cousin who barely noticed that I existed.
@@jennys.214 Maybe that's why she put so much soul into this song. Similar to the little girl, Judith Barsi, who played Petrie in The Land Before Time 😢

Original and the best. Back in the days when gay meant 'happy'. I remember laughing when the modern stage version where Maria sings "....I feel pretty and witty and BRIGHT..." to rhyme with 'night' rather than 'gay' to rhyme with day.
+millertas Hi! That's what I thought for a while, too, but the differing lyrics were because the timeline in the musical isn't the same as the one in the movie. The revival copies the original Broadway show. In the movie, they put I Feel Pretty before Act Two, making it day time instead of night. The reason why the Broadway show had it later is because character death wasn't common in Broadway Musicals at the time, so they tried to keep Act Two very upbeat to contrast the death, with Gee, Officer Krupke and I Feel Pretty in it. So even when it opened on Broadway, they had night and bright rhyming rather than gay and day.
We sang 'I Feel Pretty' in my choir many many years ago, back when I was still an adolescent, and it instantly became one of my favorite songs. Now that we are singing it again for a big concert I decided to watch the movie and I just acquired a whole new perspective on the song knowing how everything ends. Still one of my all-time favorites. It brings back so many memories...
I noticed how she’s wearing the orange and yellow dress (the colors of the Jets) but puts on and off purple (the color of the Sharks) like she’s part of both gangs since she’s Puerto Rican but in love with an American.
Both are Americans. Puerto Ricans are USA citizens from birth even if born in Puerto Rico. The others born in the states are also Americans. So I guess your definition of an American doesn't quite harmonize with reality.
Yes, simple. Just a sound stage, filled with tons of lights, a stage that has to be handcrafted, costumes that have to be designed and crafted specifically for the movie, hairstylist, makeup artist, weeks of rehearsing, the recording of the voiceover and the orchestra. Yes, simple.
Weird that she should be considered insane simply for feeling attracted towards a fellow human being. This reminds me of the song Running Bear. In the song, the Indian brave Running Bear and Little White Dove, members of two enemy tribes, fall in love. Of course, being enemies, their love could never be allowed, A raging river separated them, and at the song's conclusion, they swim towards one another and perish holding hands in the river rapids.

@@carlosdavillas1944 I didn’t even know about the remake until recently, and was scared to watch it (especially with Ziegler, who is about as unlikable as they come) so I watched one song and couldn’t stand to watch more 🤦♀️not even close to this version… I cry every time 😭 the characters can’t be remade, imo. I did see a good theatre version, but they shouldn’t have remade this movie.
@@andin916 I saw Spielbergs version of WSS 2 1/2 years ago. It couldn't hold a candle to the orginal 1961 version. I agree with you 100%. Natalie Wood was far superior to Rachel Zegler (who is an awful actress) as Maria as were most of the other actors in the 1961 movie being far better than those in the new movie. I also thought it was a disgrace Spielberg cast Rita Moreno in the new movie. Rita Moreno was exceptional as Anita in the 1961 version but she looked so out of place playing "Docs" widow in the 2021 movie-- a character that wasn't even in the original movie. Also some of the songs in the new movie had slight modifications in the lyrics which didn't help. I did see WSS on Broadway in NYC before the 1961 movie was made and ususally I like the thearter version better than a movie version, but not so with WSS. The original movie was superior to the thearter WSS.

the choreography in this is just *chefs kiss*
SALINAAAA ✨
They had Natalie study Rita's behavior to play this role and I'm.... Rita would've killed this number lmao
Rachel Zelger really did this justice. She was just as magical.
The 2021 version doesn't have the sincere silliness of the original.
honestly, I like Rachel Ziegler's version better, but this was so funny and happy
Most beautiful star ever!!!!
Back in those times kids the term "gay" also meant happy. This is the actual song from the movie that won 10 academy awards including best picture.
Incomparable Natalie Wood!
Anyone else notice her fan doesn't land when she throws it? 1:05
Jacob Hall I’ve seen this movie several times and I’ve never noticed that until you mentioned
I think she threw it off the set-
@@mostlyghostie I think so.
It would have been a distraction, the fan plopping down during the dancing.
Don't forget it's Marnie Nixon's voice. All honour to her
This never gets old, she is so cute 😂possibly the best scene ever
The 1961 version of West Sde Story is my all time favorite movie. Probably have watched it over 50 times. Far superior to the 20121 Spielberg remake even with all the new technoilogy used for the remake.
The original movie was superior to the thearter WSS.
here after selena gomez put her version in tiktok !! i cant wait for her to release it !
I love that Selena Gomez is sampling this ❤️
This song plays in my head everytime I pass a mirror and that's on confidence babes
I also just liked my own comment because I didnt realize it was mine and I agreed with whoever wrote it
I love this movie more and more
I don't know why but 1:10 that moment is so perfect to me 💝💝
Why do I envision Jack Nicholson & Adam Sandler singing this when I watch this now!" ANGER MANAGE MENT"!! 😂❤😂❤
Natalie Wood was beautiful.
That is so sweet. She looks great and "feels" great and that is nice.
Natalie Wood...perfect in this movie!!!
Saw this show live and this song is such a blast I was laughing the whole way through amazing show from beginning to end
Anger management brought me here haha great scene /movie
one of the most underrated musical masterpieces of all time period.
This movie was NEVER underrated....it was awarded numerous Oscars and remains to this day a classic of modern cinema.
@@ndhan72 glad you feel that way.
West Side Story underrated? Do you even know what that word means?
I don't think the original 1961 version of West Side Story was underated at all. I thnk it is one of the best musicals ever made. It's my favorite movie. I've probably watched it over 50 times.
Hahhahahha María makes me laugh in this scene!!!! Hahahahaha
I always thought the girls sang "Keep away from her, gentle Chino" instead of "Keep away from her send for Chino"
Have always LOVED the harmony of this song
