CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Tony (Richard Beymer) and Maria (Natalie Wood) sing on the balcony.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Romeo and Juliet is updated to the tenements of New York City in this Oscar-winning musical landmark. Adapted by Ernest Lehman from the Broadway production, the movie opens with an overhead shot of Manhattan, an effect that director Robert Wise would repeat over the Alps in The Sound of Music four years later. We are introduced to two rival street gangs: the Jets, second-generation American teens, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants. When the war between the Jets and Sharks reaches a fever pitch, Jets leader Riff (Russ Tamblyn) decides to challenge the Sharks to one last "winner take all" rumble. He decides to meet Sharks leader Bernardo (George Chakiris) for a war council at a gymnasium dance; to bolster his argument, Riff wants his old pal Tony (Richard Beymer), the cofounder of the Jets, to come along. But Tony has set his sights on vistas beyond the neighborhood and has fallen in love with Bernardo's sister, Maria (Natalie Wood), a love that, as in Romeo and Juliet, will eventually end in tragedy. In contrast to the usual slash-and-burn policy of Hollywood musical adaptations, all the songs written by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim for the original Broadway production of West Side Story were retained for the film version, although some alterations were made to appease the Hollywood censors, and the original order of two songs was reversed for stronger dramatic impact. The movie more than retains the original choreography of Jerome Robbins, which is recreated in some of the most startling and balletic dance sequences ever recorded on film. West Side Story won an almost-record ten Oscars, including Best Picture, supporting awards to Chakiris and Rita Moreno as Bernardo's girlfriend, Anita, and Best Director to Robbins and Wise. Richard Beymer's singing was dubbed by Jimmy Bryant, Natalie Wood's by Marni Nixon (who also dubbed Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady), and Rita Moreno's by Betty Wand. The film's New York tenement locations were later razed to make room for Lincoln Center.

Reality: Yelling "Maria!" in the Puerto Rican part of the neighborhood = 183 girls come to their windows.
WikeddTung lol that's funny.
Well at least if they break up, he won't have learned the song for nothing.
@@caitiekoch3451 LOL
🤣🤣
Lol! Nah! That will be in Mexico, Maria is not a popular name on Puerto Rico but it get your point lol!
As an ten year old boy in 1961 New York's City's Washington Heights., I saved two weeks allowances and spent it to see 'West Side Story'. It was worth every penny. The magic has lived with me ever since.
Yes, and I lived in hells kitchen

Those making comments about why they had to "speak" softly on the balcony but their "loud singing" was not heard by others are missing one of the basic expressions of musical theater (which is an outgrowth of the European opera). Many such songs were to capture the moment and step outside of "real" time. Much like a verbal soliloquy spoken only to the audience. The song in this scene obviously represents the feelings they are expressing with their hearts to each other. Their words are not intended for the outside world (nor are they "heard" by the outside world). It's a form of artistic expression often featured in musicals.
Milton Smith thanks new to musicals this is helpful.
Alright then
If my life was a musical, I wouldn’t sing without an imaginary pit orchestra following me.
Exactly. "...step outside of 'real' time".
Very interestingly done in "Dancer In The Dark", a brutal homage to musicals.
You don’t understand basic expressions of humor. The obviousness of your point is matched by the validity of a humorous point that this convention of theater would be absurd in real life.
this musical was so far ahead of it's time
J Rock too bad it was written in a time where they didn’t cast the roles correctly
bonjour on fait un spectacle sur sa
Totally in accordance. Nothing like the good old days of music without the technology to enhance ones vocals....
Cherry Cola I think the casting is spectacular.
J Rock - It is eternal.
Maria : "QUIET"
Also Maria *proceeds to sing loudly*
Txmilx ssi was thinking the same thing 😂😂😂
It’s a musical, don’t question it 😊

maria is tony's saquioa
Yes! He’s such a swoon worthy character, man. He was my middle school crush, if I’m being completely honest with you.
Favorite line: It's when I don't look that it happens!
Maria: He is like Bernardo, afraid. (pauses, then laughs) Imagine being afraid of you.
So cute. I love that line. She could tell right away that Tony has a good heart.
By the end of the movie Bernardo has a reason to be afraid of tony
@@Bubbsmaster Yeah, that is true. The rumble scene in the movie is hard to watch.
Emily Hedrick it’s gripping.
@@emilyhedrick2851 IKR. Every time I watch that scene I say to myself "Ice, Action, knock him out or tie his hands and feet together long enough until Riff is done fighting with Bernardo.
@@Bubbsmaster i mean, it's not like tony wanted to hurt him, but just like he said to maria, riff was like a brother to him so he got blinded by the pain. what's worrying is how maria doesn't give a f*ck about it and forgives him right away ... yes it was an accident but bernardo was your brother girl ...
The prologue to the main song is one of the most beautiful pieces of musical theater ever written.

This movie is a timeless masterpiece. It's almost unreal how much of a work of art this movie is. Every frame is absolute cinematic perfection.
Could not agree more! Yet I couldn't stand a single frame of the remake. Utterly timeless and authentic.
It is one of the best films I have ever seen and probably ever will see, talent will never come to this Apex ever ever again I swear, in 100 years this movie will still be unbelievable
@@traceofwind without pontificating on the remake. . .I agree with you 100%. Richard Beymer has been embarrassed by his performance over the years and not joined the cast in reunions. My daughters disagree and so do I. His portrayal of a guy with emotions who expressed himself in a certain way, wasn't masculine enough and rubbed the men of the 60's the wrong way. . .This is my opinion, as a child of the 60's, but I find it ahead of it's time. . .it might not have been intentional, but the 'dreamer' still hits me every time.
@@markfiedor1139 Thank you for the insight, a very interesting perspective!
It’s so cute when Tony repeats the Spanish he hears from Maria 🥰
It's so sweet when he turns to leave the balcony and she calls for him and he sweetly and gently tells her "Shhh".
This is how I picture every good couple on Wattpad
This will always be my favorite romantic scene in cinematic history
I think mine too.
This one and Something Good from The Sound Of Music lol
Whats the Song im her shop when Thea pretend marrying?
60 years on and no musical can come close to this masterpiece ! the greatest musical of all time
"West Side Story" is definitely one of the greatest musicals of all-time, but "Phantom of The Opera", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot", "The Sound of Music", " The King and I", " South Pacific", "Man of La Mancha" and "Shenandoah" are equally great!
@@michaelbarlow6610 I was with you until, "Man of La Mancha' . . .lol.
@@markfiedor1139."Man of La Mancha" is a great musical that unfortunately doesn't get the acclaim that musicals like "West Side Story", "Phantom of the Opera", "My Fair Lady", "Camelot" , "The Sound of Music" and "The King and I" receive. It is simply, in some respects, a different type of musical from the others! But those differences don't make it a lesser musical in greatness than the others!
Their chemistry might not have been in real life but they had chemistry in the movie
Friends Rachel, Monica,Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, Ross He was a handsome young man here wasn't he.
I only recently realised that this was the same Beymer who played Benjamin Horne in Twin Peaks! And Riff also played the doctor in the same show.
Wow. Would never have guessed it.
Beymer's acting was superb in this movie and perfectly encapsulates the sweet, sensitive and naive nature of Tony (that was reminiscent of Romeo in Shakespeare's play).
And what a beautiful man he was in his youth.
Friends Rachel, Monica,Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, Ross
Another fact about this movie is that the actors had to have others sing because they couldn’t sing
PTX, STEVEN UNIVERSE, TD FaNgIrL Natalie could sing but her singing wasn’t fit for the character
my choir teacher said that those two in real life hated each other so much that they had a restraining order that after they finished filming a scene they both had to be 10 feet away from each other
This is the closest thing to saying “You hang up first”
“No you hang up”😂when they say goodnight repeatedly
It is mirroring the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet. ...good night, good night. A thousand times good night. Parting is such sweet sorrow that I shall say good night til it be morrow.
Before every teenager had a cellphone, there was actual romance in person lol

Les and Phantom should not be in the same sentence as West Side. Good god almighty are you crazy?
AGREED
Tommy Vermiglio I LOVE THIS MUSICAL, 2 FAVORITE MUSICAL FIRST IS SINGING IN THE RAIN
Tommy Vermiglio they’re the best because they both have Maria’s lol
Please stop typing everything with the first letter being capital. It’s annoying.
And Maria's parents did not hear them singing in the stairs? xD
Gina Danitza Apablaza Just... just go with it
Gina Danitza Apablaza IKR LIKE WHAT THE HECK, SO HE COULD HEAR THEM TALKING BUT NOT SINGING THAT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE
Not the orchestra either lol
I know right- but in musicals you have to suspend disbelief.
she was probably drugged on HEROIN
i am a 43 years old guy and still a tear drops my eye when i watch this part of the musical ... emotions don't age !
Tony’s wonderful rhyme: “Every thought I’ll ever KNOW; everywhere I GO.” The orchestral harmony is brilliant on each of those two words. Thank you, Lenny.
When Tony finds his soul mate faster than Ted Mosby😂
It did take ted almost a decade to find his soulmate
Those poor kids who had to sit on the couch and listen to him for 10 years
😂😂😂😂
Hey at least Ted actually spent more then like a minute with Robin before saying "I love you" and actually took her on a date
How they intertwined the little plots in the movie through this one song, just brilliant.
Explain what you mean.
@@kawai54 I assume Ciclopea2 is referring to the quintet version of this song, which comes later. Tony and Maria are singing a reprise of this melody, referencing their central romance; the Sharks and the Jets are singing, in countermelody, about their inpending fight tonight; and Anita is singing, in the countermelody, about her anticipation of her date tonight with her boyfriend, Maria's brother Bernardo, referencing the story's secondary romance. The tension in the counterpoint is thrilling. It gives me chills every time I listen to it; it's arguably my favorite piece in all of musical theater rep
The. New York balcony scene.
"What light through yonder window breaks?"
Exactly.
What is the significance of the setting where Maria and Tony agree to meet next? Why might the director have chosen this setting
_Mš Ferrari It represents the wedding scene
It is the east, and Maria is the sun
It is not true that they hated each other in real life. Natalie unfairly gave Richard the cold shoulder while filming, because she wanted her friend Warren Beatty in the role of Tony.
However, they met a few years later and Beymer said they ate together and had a pleasent time.
+Pablo. She wanted Beatty for the role of Tony, because they were in item then.
Pablo Baňados Pérez Didn't she like date Warren Beatty at one point. These two could not get together for real coz she was married to RJ at the time. would've been nice if she were single.
I'm sorry, but you (or anyone) can't know whether '"Natalie unfairly gave Richard the cold shoulder while filming." Please don't say you read it somewhere, or someone told you. She may have originally wanted Warren; so what? It's grossly unfair to say she was unkind in any way to Richard; we cannot know that. Look at the legendary performances they turned in; that's what will live forever: Tony and Maria and their doomed love for each other.
@@blanchefan
I read it on an interview that Richard Beymer gave. Of course who could know absolute truth...?
Pablo Bañadps I remember that in a TCM interview
In my opinion, the best musical ever!
Because the storyline is the one of the most romantic lovestories with one of the most romantic poetry written by one of the greatest poets: Romeo and Juliet
Rick Mileske SAME
Rick Mileske YEA EXCEPT IN THIS MARIA DOESN'T KILL HERSELF AFTER SHE SEES TONY DEAD BUT IN ROMEO AND JULIET JULIET KILLS HERSELF BECAUSE SHE SEES ROMEO DEAD
The score is wonderful!
when this movie came to my city over 50 years ago I saw it 18 times(eghteen) and today in my seventies this particular scene still moves me like the first time. It is amazing, the music and the lyrics are really extraordinary.
I was 13 when WSS was released. I lived in Hollywood, there were massive signs and posters everywhere. I saw it multiple times. I fell in love with Natalie and she's been my dream girl ever since. This scene is *PURE GENIUS* ... It's nice to share my recollections with someone who can appreciate them. 👋
I can't watch this scene without smiling from ear to ear.

OHMYGOD SO MANY REFERENCES TO ROMEO AND JULIET
Addy p Pretty sure that was the inspiration behind the musical
It's based on Romeo & Juliet. The characters' personalities are even very similar. It's basically a modern American version of the original!
Apocal Q I agree. In english we are doing this and we viewed this as a comparison to almost modern time Romeo and Juliet.
It is Romeo and Juliet updated. I think every HS English class has to do the comparison project.
Apocal Q how else?
Have this on dvd. Saw it in the theater in 1961. Loved it.
this is THEE greatest musical of all time, perfection.
My G-d, Sondheim was brilliant... May his memory endure as as blessing forever. Omayn.
In memory Stephen Sondheim (1926-2021)
Natalie Wood...what a beauty!🤗✨
I’ve only seen her in this movie and Miracle on 34th Street
@@manuelorozco7760 You should watch “ Rebel Without a Cause” with Natalie and James Dean. Great movie
This will never be replaced
Great sets and cinematography throughout this movie, and this scene in particular sets a standard that others are measured by today. The low angle camera work on the dance at the gym was groundbreaking, the fire escape stairs have become emblematic of urban life. Add to that the glorious colours, a story that is universally understood, and then we have the unsurpassed musc and songs of Bernstein. On top of all that there's the choreography and dancing which set new standards. This film is a feast for the eyes, ears and the heart.
Who in their right minds can dislike this clip?

How modern and ingenious this film is, music, songs and dances, as if it were a day ago. This is the magic of the 60s, the best years of Mankind after the terrible war, when people understood the value of Life and Love. Amazing film and music that is not possible to repeat.
