It's harder than it looks and the competition is only getting more fierce. If you're in the right location with the right market it's doable.

Analysis paralysis takes out 90% of future entrepreneurs. I jumped in yesterday and went to Costco and bought a rack and already ordered seeds, lights and trays. Thank you to everyone involved in my awakening! To anybody “waiting” JUST DO IT!

70-80% profit margins. That's quite a rake! This guy is awesome. I'm so glad to hear his story. Thank you for interviewing him! I can't tell you enough how wonderful it is to hear you two talk about sharing your wisdom for free, teaching people how do to it themselves and that it doesn't detract from your business but only makes it stronger. This is true in SO many industries and pursuits. You become the expert and the go-to figure. Plus, people may enjoy dabbling, but the majority of them won't try to produce as prolifically as you do which guarantees a return customer. Thumbs up!

This is inspiring! I recently quit my 9-5. Doing doordash and really love serving the community and making smiles. I've been a delivery driver most of my career so I'm very efficient at dashing. I heard about micro greens from Dr Rhonda Patrick on a podcast a few years back and I was intrigued. I've only started researching and found you two. I have limited space and money and social skills, as much as I like making smiles, I like to only be in the presence of people short enough to deal business and get out. I get social anxiety from having people listen to me speak. Especially trying to make a sale. So I'm getting paralysis by fear. I've already pitched to two businesses if they wanted to try some of my non-existent crop in a few weeks. I'm not shot down. Infact it showed me I have potential. I'm nervous about many factors. Thanks for hearing me. Thank you both for the incredible knowledge.

Nobody mentions pak choi as a microgreen. I have been growing it for a while. It's easier to grow than anything I have grown in the past. It grows fast. It's hardy. Has a high germination rate. Tastes delicious. I harvest 75% as microgreens by thinning the tray then I leave the remainder until ready for transplant and then I harvest them as young but full plants for salads or older mature plants for soups and stir fries. I find them easier than either peas or sunflowers. I don't do radishes because I don't like them. I also harvest beets, carrots, lettuce and cabbage as microgreens. But I do this only as part of the thinning process for plants I plan to transplant into my garden.

That's a great interview Nate. I'm just starting microgreens and your videos have helped me a lot. This part of the world (South Africa) hasn't yet fully embraced microgreens. I cannot even get crucial information from the seed companies like I do from yours and other people's UA-cam videos.
I pray you keep on posting them.

For Mold: I am using flood trays. I don't have many problems with mold. Not sure if this is the reason why, but it is worth the try. I had heard that copper retards mold. So I took copper pennies, and put them in my flood trays--probably about 30 to an 8 foot by 2 foot tray. Copper pennies are pre-1982. The newer ones are made from zinc. I am also experimenting in my outdoor garden by adding copper and zinc pennies to my garden for the minerals and to head off fungal issues there.

Hi. Thank you for the information. I have a question. Did you get a licence to grow//sell micro-greens? Has anyone asked you if you have a licence? Does the city inspect you? How do you manage this? I want to start from home and I know there is the cottage law I can rely on, but it only allows me sales of up to $25,000 a year. From there on, I believe I need to move into a licence'd place? Is there any information out there about this?

moonbee03 how come no one has answered this

    • @sophiaglass2000
      @sophiaglass2000 2 роки тому

They probably have not answered because it varies so much state to state, county to county, maybe even city to city.
Recently I called my county's health and safety department and agriculture department to ask what sort of licensing i needed specific to micro greens and sprouts. They said as long as it's an agricultural product and NOT a salad or any other "ready to eat" product I am good to go. They also mentioned something about municipal water. I live in a suburb so the water is municipal. I think if it was a private well there would be something to look into.
TLDR, call your county's health department and you will probably find out all you need to know.
Taxes and registering a business are a different story.

Definitely found this video inspiring. I feel great when I eat sprouts so I’ve been looking how to grow my own. Then I discovered microgreens and how much more nutritious it is. Never thought to sell it but I love that you can help people be healthier w these little plants and it would possibly reduce global warming if people grew this at home. It’s exciting to know you can start something on your own. Thank you for sharing the real raw experiences about your challenges too.

If that mold is at the base at the stem, it may not be mold. It may be "Root Hairs" that can easily be mistaken for mold. It looks spider-webby at the base of the stem. If it's effecting your entire tray it's most likely root hairs. I'm definitely not an experienced microgrower..... yet..but that's coming from watching videos on Larry from CityHydro. Fantastic work though Don! I can't wait to get started.

Try this. First cut the bottom three inches from an old milk bottle. Then cut the top third off some small plastic or paper cups. Cut some small holes in the bottoms of the cups. Fill those cups about 3/4 high with potting soil. Put the cups in the bottom part of the milk bottle. Fill the milk bottle bottoms half an inch with water. Sprinkle half a dozen cilantro seeds onto the top of soil of each cup. Put them on the window sill and then twice a day spray them gently with water. Be patient. It might take 2-4 weeks to germinate. When they are about an inch tall thin them to two per cup. When they are two inches tall thin then to one per cup. When they are about 4 inches tall carefully transplant them into one gallon pots or depending on the time of year, into your garden. For microgreens you will need larger containers and plant them 3-4 times the density per square inch and then harvest them as needed.

hi, i have a question about lighting, is there a difference in yields if you grow microgreens indoors with LED or in a greenhouse with natural light? are there differences in the growing process? can you grow microgreens without LED, just with natural light all year long or do you need artificial light? i ask this because i would prefer growing microgreens with natural light in a greenhouse or even outdoors in summer, it would be great if you could talk about all this and the differences between the 2. thanks

    • @ryanduckering
      @ryanduckering 2 роки тому

You ‘can’ do it that way.
There are multiple issues with that though.
If you’re running it like a consistent business you’re going to run into two main issues with light consistency.
The first is literally just the weather. If you’re in a greenhouse you’re inevitably going to get periods of cloud and rain. This will undoubtedly affect the growth of your micro greens.
The second is the positioning of the sun. Unless your greenhouse and racks are PERFECTLY positioned to reap relatively even light throughout the day, your plants are going to stretch towards whichever direction provides them the most sun.
Both of these factors will result in leggy/inconsistent growth and an inconsistent product.
There are probably methods to perfectly account for both of these issues, but it’s going to be far more complex than simply providing static overhead light.
You can absolutely grow these greens for yourself with nothing but sun. It only becomes an issue if you’re running a business which requires a standard and consistent product. If you get two weeks of rain & cloud when people are expecting greens from you, you’ll run into issues.

Customers also come to my shop. Is there a need for that insurance for growing and delivering micro greens? Plant propagation to sell potted plants from my property might need liability insurance Iam thinking.

Do you have a nutrition sheet about all the greens that you grow or for all the greens that are grown? It would be great to put the nutritional facts on the label.

Hi! Thank you for making this video! I'm very interested in starting my own micro green business. How do you get delivery customers outside of farmers markets? What are your best selling greens for home deliveries?

Does anyone know if a business has to be registered with a state before they begin selling microgreens?

Hello Nate, I caught the first 25 mins of the Webinar, but then I completely lost sound (I am in Sweden).
With the vast amount of ziplocs available, is there a particular size you can recommend? Thank you for all your hard work and videos, they are a massive help!

Glad you've found them helpful! depends on what variety you are selling and if you are delivering samples or orders - just buy a couple different and go from there

Why don't you try UV florescent lights for some amount of time after un-stacking to kill the mold and sanitize the young sprouts. Eye and Skin protection would be a good idea, if you try it.

How do you feel about bird seed? I found a company selling certified organic non gmo sunflower seed as bird seed. As far as I know the only difference is selection for germination rates and obviously price. It has the same certifications as the seeds being sold on seed websites as far as the certified organic and non gmo stamp

I would give it a try if it's organic and a good price, for sure!

Just keep it simple with a small rack like in my videos. Might want to do in kitchen if possible so you have hard floor and close to water

I could not agree with Don more about chefs. It drives me nuts that everyone is concerned with appearance and the color, yet no one mentions taste or how eating them makes you feel. Also most micro green farmers are boring as they just grow the same things. Push the dang envelope some.

Could that mold you say on the sunflowers actually be root hairs and not mold at all? I have heard many people mistake root hairs for mold, especially if they are at the bottom of the stem.

Not in this case, but yes - many people starting out do confuse the two.
