  • 💥With the farmers market season starting up in the Spring time, it's always a good idea to learn how to sell your microgreens, how to prepare for a market, and what you should expect when selling Microgreens to your local community.
    Keep in mind that farmers markets are one of the many ways that people turn growing Microgreens into a business. It's also a great way to enhance your skills and meet potential clients that you can start a Microgreen delivery service!
    ✅ In this video we share our experience at our very first farmers market in Lucas, TX - along with how we priced our Microgreens, displayed our products, engaged with the community and more!
    We had a complete blast sharing our greens with our local community and look forward to many more markets like this!! 🥳
    Hope you enjoy and find some good take-aways from our advice!!!

    I'm just coming across this video. I was there on your first time at the Lucas Farmers Market. I remember having a great visit and walking away with the Triple Mix. It was my first time trying Microgreens and 3 years later I've starting growing my own using your kits!!

    If you're not physically able to stand all day, bar height stools and things like director's chairs are a far, far better option than one of those low folding chairs.

    Rather than having to run all over town...how about just setting up how ever many drop- off centers...like gyms, health food stores, co-ops...a couple of times a week, whatever and have customers pre-order and pay on your website.... I order farm fresh eggs like that and pick them up at a computer repair store....works elegantly....least amount of effort for the biggest impact....and get reviews from your customers.....on your site, or at your market....and print them....also hook up with your local Chamber of Commerce, Small/Local Business, etc organizations.....you can get a lot of support and free advertising from these agencies...What you're doing is lifting people's quality of health which reflect in their lives...ya can't lose

      Yeah! That’s a great suggestion! We no longer do commercial sales because we focus teaching people how to grow now!

      To WC: Wonderful suggestions! Wondering how you coordinate the drop offs with the businesses? Do you have literature at their businesses or does the drop-off happen actually outside of business? Thanks in advance for answers!

    Ask folks to reveal something about themselves. Ask, in some way, “What do you like?” To eat? How to entertain? Do your kids like veggies? People love to talk about themselves. You might not be able to get them to stop, but they will certainly be engaged.
    Also, display the salad mix, not in the baggie, but in a clamshell, and like a salad you would pick up at the Wawa, or at Whole Foods. Have a little salad dressing with a fork on the side in little packets, so they can eat it for their lunch right then and there. You might sell more that way and really make an impact (especially if people are hungry!).
    You folks are absolutely fantastic. You’re incredibly professional in how you produce these wonderful micro greens and I’m learning so much from your videos every day. I can’t wait to become a full-scale hobbyist at micro greens and I will use your methods as my model. You guys are terrifically upbeat and very professional. Best of luck to you - you deserve it!
    *************************
    PS
    I was fascinated with another very creative idea I saw with a micro green UA-camr from Australia.
    He would sell tiny containers, like plastic round dishes which contained hummus, and plant micro greens which looks like a heart as a potted plant (uncut). He would cut out a heart shaped stencil in cardboard and plant the heart shape with amaranth. Then he would use cres around the edge of the heart shape as a contrast color. He had pictures on this website of the final product and it was really cute. That could be a real eye-catcher at a farmers market with the advantage that people could buy it and use it as a gift for others. So, around Valentine’s Day, for example? Someone could then put it up on their windowsill and clip off a few micro greens every day while still enjoying the pretty heart Image as a piece of art. This would also keep you and your product in their minds longer.
    **********************************
    PPS
    Here is a link to one of those Peppe Fasso videos which, though it doesn’t show the precise heart shape, gives you an idea of the kind of product he is presenting at farmers markets in Australia. This guy is a real character and incredibly creative. He seems to have had a lot of success. Enjoy!

    Selling in a bundle, not just a mix because everyone loves bundles. I've seen farmers market 5 salads in 5 separate containers (not plastic bags) as a bundle and are the first to sell out. I think because your lunch is done for the week. One stood out to me. It came with little recipe card like this salad goes great with these nuts or theses dried berries or fruit and this particular balsamic.

You might have sold more of those if you actually showed how much was in them!! Cool! I've been watching all your videos for the past 3 days (I'm off work for 3 nights), & really learning a lot! I ordered some of those green/white sprouting trays, a knife, and some Coco Coir from Amazon!! I love microgreens, and am looking forward to growing different kinds! Love the video! :-D Also a lot of experience in direct sales like this and whilst you were chatting about how, I was reminiscent of these moments and the training from my Mom. Yeah, also grew up in Mom's business haha. :-D Fun times. Body language with smiles and be genuine and engaging. No chairs, no eating at the stand is a good one because customers don't want to see you eating your pie at your stand. :-p Obvs. If you had a bad day, that happens, but serve your customer, it is not their problem. Don't flirt with chicks or get people's details for personal use etc. I have trained about 50 promoters for various stands and companies, brands and promotions over the years, helping Mom's company with marketing. HAd a corporate job in retail marketing then started my own video production company. It is Just Like That Productions (Pty) Ltd. (been liking your videos from there haha. :-p Was really fun to listen to your experience at the market guys! Thank your for sharing the knowledge and inspiring people. I am going to start out here in South Africa! :-p My grow trays are on the way! Blessings and be safe! Kind Regards Dietmar.

    I really appreciate the enthusiasm you both bring to your work, and your patient explanations! I think the farmers market environment would lend itself best to mixes, with different flavor profiles or uses: spicy sandwich greens, salad toppings, asian stir fry mix, taco greens, etc. Mixes with 3 or 4 ingredients to make it easy to understand, including 1 with high color for visual interest. I like the idea of using large biodegradable PLA clamshells, loosely packed. You want to be impressing the customer with volume, not weight. Seeing the baby lettuce expand after being freed from the sandwich bag, that would have been an easy sale in a large clamshell - especially with some arugula and amaranth for color, labeled "Salad Enhancer" or something. Great work!

    I find your videos amazing! My absolute favourite appreciated video is how to set up and sell- how to engage with customers.
    I had scanned UA-cam for “farmers marketing selling” and finally I found your video. Absolutely the best information.
    I applied your techniques on engaging, no chair sitting, samples and sold out at 2/3 markets that I was a vendor.
    In reference to cell and chair slouching, I realized that the customer does not want to “bother” that vendor.
    Hands down you two have the best video.
    Oh I should mention I have a business degree and was never taught any of these sales techniques.
    Betcha the university would hire you to teach your course on selling and all the other areas that you have success in.
    I would have taken your course and skipped all the other time consuming information seeking.
    You two are awesome!!!

    That "let's hide all the lettuce" trick. Wow. I think you should have emptied out a bag and put it beside the bags you were selling so that you could explain "doesn't look like there's much in there huh? We realised that too so this is what we've actually got in each one of those". Bam. When I saw how much came out of the bag I was sold. I'm only new to small farming but I hate the idea of plastic bags but it is a matter of finding the right packaging.

    Hey Folks, congratulations on your first farmers market. I love your display. It was simple, clean and to the point. Not too much which can make it overwhelming to the potential customer. I am from Jamaica and I am in the process of setting up my microgreen farm. For my packaging I am not using clap shell. I am using kraft box. The only drawback is customers won't be able to see inside the box.
    How do you keep the microgreen fresh and not droopy?
    What are weight and price do you sell to chef?
    What is the distance from your farm to the farmers market?
    How do you keep the microgreen cool during transport whether to the farmers market or to clients business place?
    Please!!! I am begging you and Mandy to do video on edible flowers.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +1

      So we have tried quite a few different types of packaging and the plastic bags are what keep the produce fresh and crunchy for the longest time... we tried using some different paper sacks and bags and we noticed that if it doesn’t create an airtight seal, they will begin to droop quite quickly.
      As for how we transported, we placed all of our products into insulated carrying packs that we actually use for our groceries and it kept them cool for us! If we wanted them to be even colder, we would put some ice or ice packs in there with them in the insulated cooler.
      Luckily, we were only 2.2 miles away from our local farmers market so we only had a 5 minute drive there! Also it was so cold outside that we were able to bring our product without ice packs.
      I will told Mandi that you’re wanting a video on the edible flowers, so we will start filming that this week!
      Thank you for the support and let us know if we can help in any way! 🤗🌱

      @@OnTheGrow Thanks for responding. Do a video on packaging of microgreen. What work as packaging and what doesn't work on packaging. I am going to do package test with clam shell vs Kraft box. You can do similar video and I know you will get a lot of reviews.
      You have a short distance to travel.
      What are the cost for microgreen and what is the weight?

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +1

      @@RawbornJamaican Yeah, we are pretty lucky that most farmers markets around us are quite close!
      We sold ours for $5.00 each, but the weights changed with each one... For example each of these sold for $5.00, 2.5oz of sunnies, 1.5oz broccoli, 2.5oz Speckled Peas 1.5oz Mustard, so on and so forth... We sold a mixed pack with a total of 5oz of product for $10.00.
      I will make a video on some packaging!

    Great job, as always! We love growing our processes and improving every day because of your commitment to our community of growers! If able, can you share some of the things you considered when designing your product labels? Specifically, if there were any required markings, labels, etc.

    • @OnTheGrow
      @OnTheGrow  4 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much for the kind words!! Yeah, absolutely! We wanted to label to stay very clean looking and not overwhelming... the main things we definitely wanted to include was: A space for us to write out what crop/plant variety, a space for Harvest date and a space for us to fill out the net weight of the product. We also included signage that says "Wash before eating", "Keep Refrigerated", and "Enjoy!"... We also included our website and instagram information so that we can have a way for the consumer to contact us if needed. The labels may end up evolving a little overtime but they are currently really versatile and clean looking! I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions!

    @On the Grow,
    I saw one person using paper bags. Yes, you're supporting the forestry industry this way, but the North American forestry industry has become more sustainable (due to regulations, media spotlights in past years), and at least that product can be recycled/composted/returned to the earth.
    I'm thinking about making a very small-scale version of this, but would want to package my product in something recyclable.
    Edit: For display, you could have a plastic bag/container showing each product, but then sell it with paper or something.

    ppl who dont want to go thru that husle can still choose the prepackaged plastic thingies

      Sounds like an interesting idea but just wondering about cleanliness. I might be conscience about that in the open air as a potential customer. Interested in hearing your thoughts about that? After Covid, I think so many have become such germafobes that honestly even with giving samples, I would use some very flimsy light weight throw away gloves just to give confidence that is how you run your microgreen farm. I like the idea of re-useable containers and selling just the product without container! Thanks....you got me thinking of possibilities as I begin growing my biz.

    You say you grow organically, but are you really? I ask because most people using the growing solutions tend to think they are organic when most of them are not. It's nice if you really are paying extra attention to that aspect, as I have seen many people who innocently never thought of that or realized it. It is like hydroponic growers are many times mischaracterized by the general public as organic by accident.
    Thanks for all the info you guys provide on your experiment videos. I enjoy them.

    Amazing video presentations you guys! Thank you👍 Do you continue to do the farmer’s market? Or will you continue if it’s seasonal? Have you settled on a “go to” (non-soil) growing medium / fertilizer combo yet after all the experimentation? (Ocean solution seems like it might not be an ideal standalone product)? Would you consider growing on smaller precut medium pads which can be lifted live into suitably sized recyclable clam shell containers? Finally, you mentioned you have purchased additional lighting - do you know when you will get around to test more lights? Also, you did one test with heat mat germination - is it something you implement regularly or was it just a one-off for the test video? Thank you for your time 😋

    • @OnTheGrow

      Appreciate the feedback! So we got invited back to do the farmers market again this year, and they really want us there but because we are about to move and decided to put our focus more on our UA-cam and teaching people.. We decided not to for the time being. But we always change our minds randomly so will see lol. Our go to medium is Coco-Coir. It always provides the best results and same with ocean solution until we find something we like more. That’s a great suggestion, but we actually switched over to using 32oz wide mouth mason jars where we basically do a system of exchanging the jars with the customer every time. Currently we are working on getting the lights set up so we can began more tests and as for the heat mats, it’s a totally new thing that we're experimenting with just in the videos at this moment. If it winds up working really well across most of the crops we grow…then will more then likely be adding that to our regular routine. But for now it's up in the air until we do more tests 🥳

You can also run local ads on Facebook or even sign up for produce apps that connect farmers with locals such as Vendor.
