Alec Steele Blacksmith 2022
Very cool project… nicely done!
I‘m pretty sure you‘ll eventually get to pick this masterpiece.
Else it would be a shame 😂
LPL trying to embarrass you alec! would love to see you send him the lock for the 20 sec collab of him picking it! Lol
Alec: I made a padlock!
LPL: "click" This is all I have for you today, have a nice day, please subscribe and as always, thank you.
And the prophecy is complete!
What makes it neat is that it's made with mostly hand tools and still works. Obviously, you don't want to use it to lock up your bike, but that's not the purpose. I'm sure if Alec wanted to get really acquainted with his milling machine, he could make a much more secure lock, but we don't need a 20 part series of parts breaking and Alec crying in frustration at how legitimately difficult making a really good lock must be.
Watching so many LPL videos has kind of dulled my sense of wonderment at how hard it is to actually make a lock from scratch. Very nicely done!
If Masterlock can do it, anyone can ;)
@@Jessev741 Masterlock can't do it though.
@@ClarinoI nobody said it was a GOOD lock
And this is just copying one. Making one from scratch is far more difficult. All those angles, lifts, etc. have to be pretty exact otherwise it doesn't work.
I love to see Alec doing metallurgy on the fly like making the springs, it's easy to forget that blacksmiths are all scientists.
can't wait for this to eventually become a colab with LPL. It's basically one of the rules of the internet at this point.
LOL… I’m always game.
@@lockpickinglawyer And that's why we love you
@@lockpickinglawyer HO LEE CRAP IT'S THE MAN HIMSELF
I was thinking this exact thing. needs a critique video
Cmon! We gotta make LPL pick it now.
As much as they have been fun seeing you make your own of items we take for granted.
I really want to watch a nice meaty series of you forging again and making a cool weapon.
This right here 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Yep !
was just thinking the same thing
Agreed, this was an interesting change but has run its course (for now at least). More so since the adjustable spanner and socket wrench required engineering solutions to make the parts where as this padlock has essentially just been watching him trace and then cut out the components. Hardly showing off his skills as a blacksmith and machinist.
check out michaelcthulu (probably spelled wrong) for a fix on that. he is more like a lunatic welder but he is immensely entertaining
The laser pointer segment is probably the cutest thing I have ever seen ❤
its really cool to see how these were done so long ago. makes you respect those old blacksmiths even more.
Locksmith
@@drthmik Actually, blacksmith is still right, lever locks were made by blacksmiths, locksmiths made pin and tumblr locks
Thank you for leaving your mistakes and errors in. They are encouraging to a newer maker like me to see that ever seasoned makers sometimes cut the wrong thing.
It’s coming along very well. Keep up the great craftsmanship and hard work. Forge on. Fab On. Weld On. Keep Making. God bless.
Watching you wail away at that die with the sledgehammer and chasing your parts and tools across the floor. All while standing next to a forging hammer was priceless.
5:12 Oh Alec, you numpty. It's moments like this that make your videos gold.
I must say you’re Queens English was on point good chap. Make On my Friend. It still makes me smile extra big to know that Jamie has been behind the camera. Love you guys.
I'm always amazed by your skills to take objects from everyday life (zippo, padlock, whatever), unmount and study them, and just brillantly build new ones from scratch as much practical as the originals.
It's so cool, bravo ! 👏👍
When the lock on your gate is so nice, instead of breaking in to steal something, they just take the lock! Awesome work Alec, its always fun learning some new skill in manufacturing and then applying it to a project.
Makes you appreciate how the correct technique makes things so much easier, he is a far better metal worker than I will ever be and spent a morning filling a 4 lever key,I did a 7 lever gun safe key this morning In 20 minutes.
Watching you test the springs by ear and metal reaction just made me unreasonably happy :)
To me, this is how crafting ought to be understood. Yes, there is a science behind what you did, why you did it the way you did, and how all that goes together; but, there is something to be said for seeing that distilled into comparing the result you created and the evidence of your senses to the known qualities needed for the part.
Once again the editing on this was stellar, cutting the music at 12:03 briefly for Alex making noises and similarly at 12:47 was great as always. Absolutely loving it, keep up the great work!
Wow, a long way from the simple Blacksmith that started this all.
Love to watch you just piling on more and more information to help get through each project.
o7
Forging and then machining a completely custom key to then just solder on the teeth separately is just the most Alec way to do it :D
Give us a nice long series Alec! We want to see you get invested in a new big project!
Alec I like the occasional different videos but honestly enjoy your knife making videos. especially with your old friend Will Stelter.
Yes, very cool! One day I'd like to try my hand at locksmithing.
For the next one of these remaking series you should make yourself make like 10 of the object. Will really change a lot of your processes I think and could be a great learning experience.
Its super satisfying to make a key that fits a lock. Physically, Wonderful to see you replicate the skills that can build these zero standby energy devices. I have a single lever iron case lock , with a brass bolt 250mm x 50 x 20 , single lever with a stub rather than a H window. Similar to church locks often enclosed in wooden shells. It was very decayed on the ward plate but made new parts and put it on a pirates chest. Love the work, . Do what you enjoy.
As always you find new interesting projects to build. Thank you for sharing. I'm looking forward to your next project.
Outstanding, entertaining and very productive. Your good humored attitude is refreshing! KANSAS USA
How fun, such effort to remake the ages old lock. Well done.
I like watching you make mistakes because they’re similar to the mistakes I make. Such an important part of learning and developing skills, but most people are too ashamed to include or acknowledge when they’ve done something wrong.
Hey Alec, cool project. Another one that could be cool is a swiss knife but with your touch like damascus sides and the tools that you want.
outstanding work as ever Alec, really liked this build. You have to make a multi tool next!
It works! Of course it works Alec! You need more faith in yourself. Bless you Jamie! I have a challenge for you Alec cos I can’t figure it out! A German made Wera Joker spanner with a one way ratchet system at one end! Clever bit of kit
When you're done with it, you should send it to the Lockpicking Lawyer to see how fast he can open it.
exactly as fast as a masterlock most likely as it's a like for like copy. No false gates in the levers so a very easy pick.
would also like to see lpl making a lock
It's based on a masterlock. He'll pick it with an angry stare.
It'll take him less than 2 minutes to pick, TWICE (just to make sure it's not a fluke).
Are you kidding me?! He’d probably open it with a bobby pin in 5 seconds.
I've been watching Alec for years, now, and every day I'm so glad he got adopted at the end of Meet the Robinsons.
I love these videos where you replicate things after taking them apart. I would love to see a follow-up where you take the skills and understanding and attempt some sort of recreation without being able to measure or reference every little part, say if it were all splayed out on a board you couldn't touch. It would be a hard, interesting challenge!
I was thinking the same thing. Instead of just copying one that someone else has made. Use the knowledge you've gained from doing these videos and build one of his own design.
I just recently found your channel and I must say, I really enjoy your content! Really inspiring and entertaining
I envy you, you have his entire back-log to enjoy! Its an inspiring journey to watch.
Your face at 12.04 is absolutely amazing. Combined with the noise I laughed hard. :D
Should totally send this to the Lockpicking Lawyer to test. I fully understand that this isn't meant to be a hardened lock to resist attacks, and its more of an art piece/technical challenge, but it would be interesting. Great project and once again, you're showing you're not just a talented knife maker but a versatile and talented craftsman.
Stuff made here also did a great video on making a lock, however it was more of a technical execution of precision engineering in order to try to harden a lock, maybe a collab down the line?
An absolutely riveting episode. I was pinned to my seat.
Old wind up clocks have good spring steel in them. Nice video,
I was just thinking to myself today "wasn't Alec building something?" And voila! Here it is!
makes you apreciate how much work these took in years gone past,
A lock would be really expensive
As a locksmith this has been one of my favourite projects of yours. Would love to have the tools to make my own lock! Thanks for the great content.
Its fun watching you re-create things like wrenches and locks, and of course copying an existing item is the best way to learn a technique, but it would be fun to see you move from copying to making your own unique designs (like you did with blades) for these items once you have the basics down. Also, have you ever considered trying some armorsmithing?
He has a series of armorsmithing
Now you need to make lockpicking tools!
Although, if lockpicking lawyer is anything to go by, perhaps just a wave rake seeing as it's based on a master lock 🤣
Alec have you ever tried to make a watch? Just the casing and buy a good movement for inside. A new G-shock has a forged case, looks awesome.
you see if he makes the watch casing he’ll have to make the insides like every other project (with insides) lol
Imagine a forged Damascus movement hehehehe.
@@Its_an_advocardo Fr though💀💀
Awesome lock Alec. Looking forward to your next challenge build.
It always amazes me how you can make these sort of things that these days are mass produced. Must be so much harder making a one-off.
The shackle looks awesome, a fully forged padlock case would be killer! Do the doggos bring much metal shavings back to the house?
I like Alex's sledgeforming technique.
I'd love to see you try to make a simple analog clocl. It's a bit more technically advanced than the previous project but could be very rewarding and even useful once finished.
Been looking forward to this, you have so much patience - and obviously skill.
Love your channel and your content, very inspiring! Hope all is well, keep it up.
Video series idea: make a knife by hand with only tools that you have made.
I know you did a hand made knife before, but you used tools that you already had. Now do the same thing but make all of the tools you will use. Forge, hammer, vise?, Files, hand drill, saws, wrenches, ect. It would be an a crazy series but an unimaginably entertaining one!
We need a matching Damascus set of pliers. Channel lock, needle nose, dikes, and maybe slip joint. And a screwdriver set with Damascus handles
Good to see you unlocking new skills, another project complete. Forge ahead and spring into the next one
Error: Pun Limit has been supassed by user [nicholas viney]. Please report to the uneducation board for your allotted PUNishment.
Unlocking new skills is the key to progress!
I love the chunkiness of the key!
Looks like you had a lot of fun with this and that makes me happy to watch.
12:03 Editing Genius!
Very cool. Always great to see a lock made from scratch. Next time you do this it might be easier to insert the levers in one at a time, filing them to fit the bitting on the key when the key is at its highest action on the levers in the lock. Also, might be a good idea to have pets not in the workspace as metal splinters can be very painful and horrid to remove from paws. Also pets wont know when and how to protect thier eyes.
Instead of sending it to the lawyer like other have suggested, i think you should do a collab series to see if you can build a much better lock. One that is actually difficult to pick
Super cool Alec.
Will you be sending the lock to the Lockpicking Lawyer to see how long it can resist him? I actually think it might take him a while before he can open it because the lever-locking mechanism is quite unusual in modern day and there aren't many tools that can bypass the mechanism.
I think I've seen some videos of his using Mortice lock picks, no doubt he'll appreciate using them massively
LPL has done lever locks before. It should take him less than a minute.
I’d be happy to give this special lock a try. I have a fair bit experience with lever locks, and these “Old English” style padlocks in particular. They’re not very common outside of Great Britain and India, but it’s still a necessary skill for a well-rounded picker IMO.
I would love to see that video!
@@lockpickinglawyer can we get some Damascus picks??? Only been asking for 3 years 😂 you have the power.
very glad to see LPL replied to the comment (comments?) here. what a legend that man is.
Alex, you are great at both entertainment and content, thanks for yet another vid. having dabbled in jewelry myself, I am glad to see a smith do locksmithing :)
Springtivity.... Well done sir.
Is it me or would a front and back plate made from damascus making brass pop looked sweet.
But love this guys energy when he is making these things especially when they work.
I’ve got two locks from my grandpa that he got from Iran that I would love to see you try to replicate. I’ve never seen locks like it before in my life. They’re so unique.
I know this video is from a year ago. But a great source for springs like you are looking for are from car windshield wipers. Different brands have different sizes but I always strip them out when I change wipers on any car and I find tons of uses for the spring steel around the farm and in the shop.
I would love to see a development of this. Now that you have a feel for what is needed for the padlock, you design a mechanism from scratch using the same principles.
Alex i shall challenge you to build a mini version of howitzer type artillery.
Size probably 20mm barrel,
that would be fun series to watch
Nice work Alec! Can't say that I've seen a lever lock outside of LPL or BB's videos, so it's been cool to watch you build one from scratch. A little shocking to see you in a ball cap; so used to seeing that spikey hair.
You need to send it to the lockpickinglawyer
He beat both of Stuff Made Here’s locks in seconds. At this point if he says a lock gave him trouble that means it’s invulnerable to mortal lock picks.
"Click on one... And we have it open."
agreed
Nah, he should challenge LPL, by not sending the key, and making LPL make a key.
As always, great workmanship! 👍
A jewelry rolling mill may have worked for hot rolling down some spring steel. Kinda hard on your rollers but it works.
Those also work fantastically well for patterning by rolling old lace over the top of strips of soft material like brass and copper.
most interesting part of these recent videos has been seeing all the different tools you have for workholding and work surfaces, would be neat to see you make something along those lines at some point
I remember when I too did everything the hard way. He'll learn in due time.
"Flexibility" is actually the right term when referring to a spring's "springiness" from a structural engineering aspect. You could also use "stiffness" which is the inverse of flexibility (k = 1/f, k is measured as the amount of force it takes to deflect a unit in length, i.e. force/deflected length).
I think elasticity is closer to what he would consider "springiness". Flexibility is bending/twisting without breaking but it allows for deformation where elasticity/springiness requires resuming normal shape afterward.
Awesome project! That stock you used for the spring would be excellent for creating the tongue on a Jawharp. Project idea~?
Great job! Cool build
Love it, well done!
As always what an amazing project, very interesting :)
Spring steel is laying in the gutters everywhere in Australia. The street sweepers use spring steel for the bristles
The phrase you want is "These bad Mamajamas".
You pick some pretty awesome music. Love it..!
Nicely illustrates why such items were very expensive and only for the rich before the industrial revolution and mass production.
Now maby make a really big padlock that would be cool😉
Thank you, I really liked learning about these sorts of locks with you ^_^
If you wanted cheap high carbon steel for the little spring bars you could've used bobby pins, they're similar to 1095
that key looks awesome
Alec! What will the wifey say about you teasing Yogo that way?? LOL!! 😆😆
Anyone else been checking every day for the past week because you're bored on your lunchbreak at work and have nothing to watch.
Yea just me I thought so
Lovely number 8 padlock
Great Video I love these Home made projects !
Nicely done
I love how you show the successes and also the f*** ups.
Just so everyone knows, I think there is a scam happening where some one impersonating Alec is offering prizes and trying to get your details, please be careful
G
Very cool Mr Steele
its always spring time
You could also file some false gates above and below the true gates in the levers to make them more difficult to pick. ...also add a post in the keyhole and make the keyhole paracentric (wiggly shaped) then make the key from a flat piece of steel and shape it to fit in the keyhole and around the post, then file in the bitting. Those modifications should make it more of a challenge to pick. Have a look at a higher security mortice door lock made by ERA to get an idea what is possible.
Cool but I was surprised you didn't forge the key out of one piece of stock. Thanks for sharing.
Alex said cut twice and measure once. The first time was just practice. Good job
12.04 is where Jamie wins the internet for the day
I'm not sure if its actually spring steel but if you pull the metal strip out of a windshield wiper, it's pretty springy.
It is.
And coincidentally, it makes great lockpicks and tension tools.
Not a springsteel. You can bent it and it will stay.
