      What makes it neat is that it's made with mostly hand tools and still works. Obviously, you don't want to use it to lock up your bike, but that's not the purpose. I'm sure if Alec wanted to get really acquainted with his milling machine, he could make a much more secure lock, but we don't need a 20 part series of parts breaking and Alec crying in frustration at how legitimately difficult making a really good lock must be.

Hardly showing off his skills as a blacksmith and machinist.

    Watching you test the springs by ear and metal reaction just made me unreasonably happy :)
    To me, this is how crafting ought to be understood. Yes, there is a science behind what you did, why you did it the way you did, and how all that goes together; but, there is something to be said for seeing that distilled into comparing the result you created and the evidence of your senses to the known qualities needed for the part.

    "Flexibility" is actually the right term when referring to a spring's "springiness" from a structural engineering aspect. You could also use "stiffness" which is the inverse of flexibility (k = 1/f, k is measured as the amount of force it takes to deflect a unit in length, i.e. force/deflected length).

    • @Merennulli
      @Merennulli Рік тому +1

      I think elasticity is closer to what he would consider "springiness". Flexibility is bending/twisting without breaking but it allows for deformation where elasticity/springiness requires resuming normal shape afterward.

Great project and once again, you're showing you're not just a talented knife maker but a versatile and talented craftsman.
    Stuff made here also did a great video on making a lock, however it was more of a technical execution of precision engineering in order to try to harden a lock, maybe a collab down the line?

    Very cool. Always great to see a lock made from scratch. Next time you do this it might be easier to insert the levers in one at a time, filing them to fit the bitting on the key when the key is at its highest action on the levers in the lock. Also, might be a good idea to have pets not in the workspace as metal splinters can be very painful and horrid to remove from paws. Also pets wont know when and how to protect thier eyes.

    Seems to me, the "kit" for this could be roughly made (all of the sheet pieces punched and roughed out, the key made but not 'keyed' yet, etc.) and shipped out to customers so they can finish it by bending and filing and finishing it up to look and work noice. That'd be quite a fun project. Reminds me of the kind of stuff people could order out of a Popular Mechanics magazine back in the 1950's.

    If you wanted cheap high carbon steel for the little spring bars you could've used bobby pins, they're similar to 1095

    Now you need to make lockpicking tools!
    Although, if lockpicking lawyer is anything to go by, perhaps just a wave rake seeing as it's based on a master lock 🤣

    You could also file some false gates above and below the true gates in the levers to make them more difficult to pick. ...also add a post in the keyhole and make the keyhole paracentric (wiggly shaped) then make the key from a flat piece of steel and shape it to fit in the keyhole and around the post, then file in the bitting. Those modifications should make it more of a challenge to pick. Have a look at a higher security mortice door lock made by ERA to get an idea what is possible.

    Oddly enough, Alec just made one of the hardest to pick locks you can get. Modern pinned locks are (for the most part) extremely susceptible to picking/raking but the lock Alec just made is not nearly as easy. First off you have to tension on the back of the lock. Next you have to apply a lot of pressure as the springs are quite stiff and will reset the pins the moment you release them. Finally because of the natural inaccuracies of human hand crafting there is likely one pin plate that you just cannot “stick” in place with tension.
