- On this edition of Curator's Corner, Phil Schreier of the NRA National Firearms Museum continues to share new details on the upcoming new exhibit, "Theodore Roosevelt Trappings of an Icon: The Summer White House." This time the focus is on the Rough Riders! Featured items include the shark skin hilt sword carried by Col. Roosevelt, 1st U.S.V. Cavalry, Santiago, 1898; a custom-made tunic with a spectacular selection of brass buttons; Roosevelt's Rough Rider hat; and the silk 1st Cavalry flag Rough Riders flag. We're the holes in the hat to hold the spare eyeglasses he kept inside? And the reason yellow comes out as black in those photographs is that the film of that day was only sensitive to blue light. Hence the bright, bright skies, light blue eyes that rendered as nearly white and, of course, yellow as black.
Not true about the sharkskin/ray grip on the saber. It was not unique to the US Navy. Many US Army officers swords and sabers during the 19th century had sharkskin/ray grips, especially during the American Civil War.
It's a saber, not just a regular sword.
