This story got really distorted by Yellow Journalism so there is 2 main misconceptions you guys should probably know about:
    1. The Battle of San Juan Hill was pretty unimportant, it's just a big deal because Teddy Roosevelt got the victory but otherwise not huge win in the war.
    2. The only reason the Rough Riders did not all die in that battle is because the Buffalo Soldiers, a black regiment, were able to flank the Spanish from the other side of the hill (thus the Spanish could't cover both sides and the Rough Riders were able to charge)
I'm not crapping on the show I'm actually a big fan just thought people should know because the newspapers of the time distorted the true story

    • @pbsamanthamarie

...the entire command moved forward as coolly as though the buzzing of bullets was the humming of bees. White regiments, black regiments, regulars and Rough Riders [i.e. volunteers], representing the young manhood of the North and the South, fought shoulder to shoulder, unmindful of race or color, unmindful of whether commanded by ex-Confederate or not, and mindful of only their common duty as Americans.

"Yellow journalism"? Do you understand what you contributed to this video? Point #1 is an opinion -- "important" and "unimportant" are subjective words based on a person's feelings towards something. _I_ personally think that the Battle of San Juan Hill was fairly important, especially since it led to the siege of Santiago, and that put quite a bit of pressure on Spanish surrender. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish%E2%80%93American_War#Land_campaign Point #2 depends on a hypothetical scenario that didn't happen, proposing that the Rough Riders _would have_ died if not for the Buffalo Soldiers, but we'll never know because that never played out to confirm your hypothesis. You seem fairly certain of this belief (to the point of calling this one single factor "the only reason") despite having no evidence for it. It's fine to believe it, but don't call someone's version "yellow journalism" simply because they hold a contrary belief.

Thank you for this content. Teddy also recruited former Confederate from Georgia and Northeast Alabama who were in Wheeler's CAV during the civil war . My grandpa's uncle was one of them. On his grave stone at the top at his wish was the term Rough Rider. Many years later I served in the us army and then the Georgia army national guard in the 1st Squadron 108th cav regiment and our lineage was from the 1st volunteer cav. And we were the modern day Taskforce ROUGH RIDERS. We carried that name with pride from the streets of southwest Baghdad to the mountains of Afghanistan.

-Cuba received independence but the United States put a puppet government.
-The Philippines was supposed to receive independence but instead the United States decided to keep it, so they had a war that the United States won, although they were given independence in 1946.

This story is missing a big piece - the 10th cavalry - an entirely Black unit of badasses - rescued the Rough Riders twice during the fighting. And one of those badasses was Capt Horace Bivens of Billings MT - whose sharpshooting record in the Army wasn't broken until the 70s.

Dear Drunk History, I have a request -
Please do a story on the Buffalo soldiers, who were a big part of winning this battle!
Thank you for hearing my request!

Samantha Marie There was an old western tv series called High Chaparral. I believe it was in the second season they did an episode centered around the Buffalo Soldiers. Yaphet Kotto(Homicide, Life On the Streets & Alien) played the commanding officer. You can find it on UA-cam. I agree I would love to see an episode about the Buffalo Soldiers.

@@cathleencooks748 But I was thinking, it may be difficult for them to do a drunk history episode on that, because drunk history is a fun show, and in that early time period, blacks were not treated nicely in general.... So how can they include that part and still keep it fun? It may bring a darker tone.... And if they don't include it, it feels like something is missing when you hear the story.... But I will say, they definitely did a great job on the episode about bringing the first blacks in the all white school. Have you seen that one? I have seen it on youtube but I haven't seen the whole episode.

@@pbsamanthamarie Some of their episodes deal with darker moments in history. Watched one a couple of hours ago about the Alamo. They have also tackled The Black Sox scandal, the Haymarket Riots, Martin Luther King vs. J. Edgar Hoover, Giles Corey & The Salem Witch Trials (they pressed him to death by piling heavy stones on him to get him to recant his testimony.) So they have handled serious subject matter sometimes in a light humorous way. Other times more like dark humor. I think the way they could do The Buffalo Soldiers is to just highlight one specific event in their honorable history like their charge up San Juan Hill. It could possibly be handled like this. While the mainly white regiment walked into a trap the African-American regiment smartly went up the side that the Spanish weren't defending. Think humor like in Blazing Saddles one of my favorite comedies.
