My favorite non- plant tool is a cooling rack(for cooling cookies) that fits over my sink. Place plants on it to water and let drain. Also a cloths basket to keep all the plant tools in one place and stop them creeping away.
The cooling rack is a good idea. I hate it when my plant tools creep away and I have to play "where did I last see it?" Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
Secret script of the elderly! Haha, never thought of this skill as a code we use. Cursive is beautiful. I use boot trays from Walmart under any group of plants on my racks or on the floor. Ugly but protective. Your fuzzy baby Hoyas are beautiful.
I know too many young people who can't read cursive; they were only taught to print, never to write, and do everything on a keyboard. I'm about to invest heavily in boot trays. The bonsai will move into the porch for the winter and they need someting under them. Thanks for watching and adding your comments.
That’s what I use! I have several. One stays in the car for use when I buy plants, makes a great way to transport plants. I use another for days I can’t repot outside, I’ll put old soil in it and sprinkle soil on my grass. Or I’ll put pots that need to be cleaned together.
Chopsticks are my go to! Along with natural coffee filters to stop up the soil from coming out the bottom on initial repots, by the time the soil has been compacted a bit, it biodegrades 😊
Nothing like a good chopstick! I've been using pieces of screen in some pots, but I might need to try the coffee filters. Thanks, as always, for watching and commenting.
I keep a planner I buy them yearly for keeping watering notes, cutting dates, ferts, certain likes of plants, needing repots, and just general notes to myself on where I left off at on things or products used. This is so helpful to me cause I carry it out by the sink and take 5 mins to fill in before I'm done with weekly plant chores.
That's why I tried other things and ended up with the paint brush, the cotton swabs never got into the small places. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
Oh, I think everyone does a bit of plant tool improv, that's why it's fun to share notes. You get the best ideas from other plant people, because, in one way or another, we all face similar dilemmas. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
I print out the invoices of all the Hoyas I have ordered and keep in a binder. Try to put notes re: repotting etc on relevant invoice. But let’s be honest. I rarely do. But at least I have all the purchase info, date, names bought as etc. And I can cringe at some of the prices I paid! 😂 Thanks for another excellent show!
I thought about noting the prices paid in my spreadsheet, but often I don't want to remember - just to avoid those cringe moments. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
I don’t keep a plant diary. I only keep that list of Hoyas on my phone. (In alphabetical order so I can check in a jiffy if I have the Hoya or not) I use clear pots to keep an eye on the roots. I water weakly weekly because I use a very airy substrate so it dries out relatively quick. I use garage sale stickers from the $1.25 store to date my cuttings. I use baker’s scrapers to clean up my mess along with a small hand brush with the dust pan. (Also from the $1.25 store) I also like to go thrifting to see what I can planty things I can find. As someone else mentioned the dish bins that you used to use a while back have a multitude of different uses. I keep one in the car so I can transport plants home safely from my favorite nursery. I use a lot of the same things you use except I’ll use a makeup brush to dust off leaves, and an eyeliner brush to get into crevices. (Ipsy sent a lot of brushes) 😂😂😂 I also use the take out sauce containers as a drip saucer for small plastic props in cups. (pup cup cups from Starbucks) Geez Rod, I forgot I used to use a fountain pen back in the day! I use clear plant tags and I use a sharpie to write the name. If the plant dies, I’ll just remove the name with a pad dipped in alcohol. But I do like going to the $1 store to see what I can use for my plants. I just ordered the same plants from TQHoyas earlier this week. Since she’s also in Tx, I get my plants in 2 days. I got the paradisea white & pink.
It's so cool to learn what "stuff" other people use for their plants - other folks have the best ideas. Tiffany - TQHoyas - is a reliable seller, and since it seems the Texas mail hubs have straightened things out, I get shipments from her quickly again. Thanks for watching and sharing your experiences.
I love Ponytail Palm. As your Hoya collection grows, and it will, keep our suggestions in mind. Thanks for watching, sharing information, and adding your comments.
I use a common soup spoon to get potting mix around the plant's root ball when up-potting small plants, and anything can find itself converted to a cover pot/water catcher. I do keep a written journal of plant moments and am considering starting a new book where each hoya gets a spread (two facing pages) where I can track its progress and note things I learn about it from plant-tubers like you!
I am going to get a dish drainer tomorrow! What a great idea. I don't keep track, but I DO need too. My memory isn't what it use to be. Great video, Thank you!
With so many plant details to try to remember, a notebook works really well for me. When did I take those cuttings? When did I get that plant? If I don't have to remember it, it's a good thing. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I use a notebook for the details about the plants, but I need a spreadsheet to keep from underwatering or overwatering the hoyas. I only have about thirty of them and compared to other growers, probably a modest amount, but that info is invaluable
This was a keen, keen video my friend 😁 I'll admit that I was a little nervous when you were wavy around that chopsticks--quite menacing 🤣 As for the cafeteria tray, the only thing I saw there was 6-8 plants hitting the ground as I trip over my dog. I admire all you folks who keep notebooks. I shoot from the hip, for better or worse 😉
I figured you'd get the double keen. If you think I'm menacing with one chopstick, you should see me with two. No Fried Dumplings or Beef Lộc Lạc is safe in my presence. I try very hard not to have the vision of the vertical descent of a tray of plants in my head, and proceed slowly and carefully. I don't have a dog to blame, only my own clumsiness. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for those budget hacks! I use all but the flat piece of plastic, tray and dish drainer which are great ideas too👍🏽! I have the mindorensis 3 years and it grows like crazy but bloomed twice. I keep a notebook or diary but slacked off. I will definitely get back to it especially after my mealy bug infestation last week. So I need to keep track since some hoyas didn't survive and I have new ones a comin' 😁! Thanks for sharing as usual! Dee, NY
I'm glad to hear about the H mindorensis, I like "grows like crazy" hoyas. Sorry to hear about the mealies. There are few things as satisfying as killing mealy bugs. Thanks, Dee, for watching and adding your comments.
What a strange coincidence, a number of hoyas mysteriously turned up at my door too! I really seem to be attracted to the long, narrow leaf hoyas right now. My wto favorite non-plant tools that I use almost every day are: stainless steel chopsticks, use to push soil down when repotting; bamboo skewer to determine if my plants need to be watered.
Hello from PR!! I use most of the not plant tools but the plastic board is something I can add. I’m an Accountant and I can literally tell you that I prefer a manual log book. I have both the electronic and the notebook but I write everything plant related in it. 😊
Hola Puerto Rico. I know, I love the experience of writing, of pen on paper. Electronic spreadsheets are handy, and I use them, but I love writing it down. Writing is magical. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
I got Amicabilis and Mindorensis Purple Star in March for Plant Haven Toronto. The leaves on Amicabilis are chorotic looking but it just bloomed last month. It is in a Rudsta cabinent; so both warmer and more humid than my house. The Mindorensis has very lovely leaves, almost transparent. It has grown well but no flowers yet. I really want the Hypolasia because of the hairy leaves and ease of blooming. I am at the point of having the weed out hoya because I can only keep and care for so many hoya, etc. I use most of the tools you use, but I have never thought of using a paint brush to apply sulfer. I great idea!
I used to think I couldn't have any more Hoyas, but somehow I always find the room. Thanks for letting us know how your plants are doing. Thanks, too, for watching and adding your comment.
Hi Rod. Beautiful hoya and ideas. I have a strainer and just picked up a bucket for dunking my plants. I do have a book to journal on occasion. 😊 I write in cursive too
I'm not very organized in keeping an inventory in a notebook for my plants, although every year I buy a new agenda mainly for that. I plan to do an inventory in Excel, you mentioned it in a previous video and I was reminded that I was supposed to do it a year ago. During this time a lot of plants have arrived and it really takes a bit to organize it all in one place, and at work me and Excel are best friends so it will go easily 😇 I hope! I just need to get started 😅
Excel is so much fun to play with. When I finaly realized I needed a spreadsheet, I built it a bit at a time, adding a few plants every couple of days, otherwise it was too overwhelming a task. Thanks for watching ans adding your comments. God luck with the spreadsheet.
I’ve gotten many Hoya from Planthaven Toronto. I’ve had 100% of them survive travel to the US and grow into lovely plants - they’re a nice source for Hoya that I haven’t found at my fav local nursery.
I was hesitant at first, but Planthaven did such a good job of it, I've ordered several times - and always been happy. Thanks for watching and sharing your experience with a good seller.
Thanks. Notebooks don't work for everyone, and it's something I have to make myself do because I'll regret it if I don't. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
You had me giggling frequently through this very interesting video!😊. I also use some of the tools you mentioned and will pick up some that I don’t. I use a notebook and erasable pen to jot down notes! Hanging out with you must be a real hoot😅
Geology loop (magnifying glass) 20x magnification, really helpful for spotting mites etc. Also have a plant diary, that's fully uncensored, strangely satisfying to write swear words.
I've got a little electronic "microscope", but a loupe might just be easier. I'm going to look into one. I never considered swearing in my notebook, but as I read that it did sound, as you said, strangely satisfying. Thanks for watching and sharing your comments.
Then the indoor plants are the ones that are truly for fun. Hope your outdoor garden did well this year, if you're in the Northern Hemisphere, or that is will do well if you're not. Thansk for watching.
@PlantedInRI yes, my indoor plants are for pleasure for sure. I'm in Michigan, and the garden did ok over all this year. Next year will be better! Every year is a learning experience.
Love the h Mamasa 😍 I will have to keep an eye out for one 😂😂 I do use quite a few of the items you showed for plant care & will add to my arsenal the ones I don’t have, they look really helpful 👍 I keep having hoyas turn up at my house too & I don’t know where they come from, my husband doesn’t believe me though 🤷🏼♀️ His favourite saying is “is this one that was on backorder” or “you said you weren’t getting anymore” 😂😂🙄🙄 I really enjoy your videos & your dry sense of humour puts a big smile on my face ❤ No notebook for me, in fact no notes 🫣😬🇳🇿
"Is this one that was on backorder?" LOL, I think I like your husband's sense of humor. So glad you enjoy the videos. When I talk about plants to my friends, I watch their eyes roll, but I know that the people who watch "get it". So, thanks for watching and adding your comment.
I use my plat tags for a lot of info. I keep name/numbers, where I got it and when and date received, pot up date and any pertinent info. So no journal but that tag is important to me.
I'll bet that tag is important, that's your journal. You must print very small and neatly; me, not so much. Thanks for watching and sharing your comment.
@ as for tools, a tea spoon and ice scoop for soil and potting as I mix my own chunky mix! And my spray bottles of alcohol for pests, a clothes racks for hanging plants in the greenhouse. So many plants!!!
Hoya Mamasa? I love that little plant. I can't wait to see it grow out. How do you keep track of such a tiny plant with your huge collection of plants. I know it's residing in the cookie jar now, but after?
Another insightful video I also use a tweezer, paintbrush and the colander. Instead of a bucket I use clear stackable storage bins. Yes, still use a notebook for recording purposes and logging my beauties
Once the plants get a decent root system, no matter their size, I move them into my standard 4.5" selfwatering and pon straightaway. I don't seem to have much problem with root rot and I don't have to repot them again for quite a while.
Cool plants & not plant tools!!! I have purchased the items to keep a notebook, but alas I rely on my quickly failing memory to remember things. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 😎😎😎😎🪴🪴🪴🪴

25:21 heads up for people looking for the dish drainer in the US, Dollar Tree sells black or white ones for $1.25
That’s what I use! I have several. One stays in the car for use when I buy plants, makes a great way to transport plants. I use another for days I can’t repot outside, I’ll put old soil in it and sprinkle soil on my grass. Or I’ll put pots that need to be cleaned together.

Sounds great, so much easier for me than trying to remember when I did stuff. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
Love the paint brush!
Cotton swabs never really get deep enough into the crevices.
That's why I tried other things and ended up with the paint brush, the cotton swabs never got into the small places. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
Great new hoyas you got. I thought I was the only one who improvise items for tools 😊. Enjoy your weekend

I love your Hoyas so beautiful and so delicate you so much in care for your plants that’s why I like to see your channel 😊🫶🏻
Thank you for the kind words. Thank you, too, for watching and adding your comments.
Thank you for the shoutout and great pronunciation! 🎉 I don't keep a journal since I only have 18 hoya and a ponytail palm. ❤️🇨🇦

You're welcome. They didn't let us use fountain pens in Catholic school, too messy I think. Thanks for watching and adding your comment.
Hello, I have been using plant tools from my kitchen for decades.
You're right. The kitchen is a great source for improvised tools. Thanks for watching and commenting.
I use a notebook for the details about the plants, but I need a spreadsheet to keep from underwatering or overwatering the hoyas. I only have about thirty of them and compared to other growers, probably a modest amount, but that info is invaluable
It's not the size of the collection, but the joy it brings you that is important. Thanks for wartching and adding your eperience.
