  • Polar bear cannibalism likely isn't a rare event, but it's rarely witnessed by people. This may be the first time it's been captured so well on video. During a Lindblad Expeditions trip on the National Geographic Explorer in the Arctic, crew and passengers spotted a male polar bear hunting and then eating a polar bear cub, despite the efforts of the cub's mother to protect it. Experts say this cannibalistic behavior could be occurring more regularly, because the loss of ice due to climate change makes it harder for the bears to get to their typical food sources.

      How does this make them less lovable? Almost every carnivorous species of animal cannibalizes when food is scarce. Other iconic predators such as lions and tigers do the same thing. This method of survival isn’t gonna make people think of polar bears otherwise. They’re still a lovable species. Just remember those cute little hamsters you see at ur local pet shop... yeah they’re cannibals.

    Its the same with most species of Bears - killing cubs that are not theirs increases their own spawns chances of survival

    No pity here just turning the tables when a polar bear with her cub catch a baby seal. If food is becoming so scarce in the Arctic why not transport wild boar in the summer season that seem to have overtaken alot of the land in Texas and other Southwestern states? It would be interesting to see how they would adapt to the environment and either enhance or alter it.

    I dont understand the dislikes, this is the way nature works. Nature is brutal and merciless. Animals live in constant anxiety, they spend most of their lives trying to snag some food or trying not to get eaten. Its just the way it is, nothing wrong or evil about it.

    • @lightinthesky3183
      @lightinthesky3183 3 роки тому +1

      Actually fossil fuel burning, including anyone’s diesel truck, is raising the temperature so that the arctic ice is melting at a dangerous rate. This polar bear might have eaten something else, a seal or even walrus, but those animals aren’t around as much, and bears are having to go much farther, including miles of swimming because of the loss of habitats in order to find food. Thus there is no way of knowing when this male ate last, but it is likely that it was a much longer stretch between meals than it used to be and that puts any animal that comes close in mortal danger. So yes, your diesel burning truck is part of what is killing polar bears.

    Her whole body wants her baby back! She probably gave birth to at least 2 or 3 cubs and has watched them either die or get eaten by a big male polar bear. Those male polar bears are huge. It's tough to compare the size of them by looking at them being filmed off a big ship. The polar bear rivals the Alaska brown bear as the world’s largest land predator. A large male polar bear can weigh up to 1,500 pounds and grow to nearly 10 feet tall, standing on its hind legs; however, a record male shot in 1960 in Alaska weighed 2,210 pounds and stood 12 feet tall. She'll probably have to put up with that same giant polar bear coming after her to mate with her. Polar bears have a tough life. It's amazing they make it to adulthood with how cannibalistic the male polar bear is!
