South Europeans are mostly more petite than those in Northern Europe. I’m Spanish but live in England. I’m 5ft 2” and 8 st. I make my own clothes but it’s often a struggle to find things that fit me. When I had my first son 21 years ago all the maternity clothes in England were huge on me. Luckily, my mother can sew and made me a few clothes as well as buying a couple from a Spanish maternity clothes retailer. People talk about size inclusivity but they often forget about the smaller sizes. We can also struggle to find patterns that fit us well. This video was really helpful. I had heard of Maison Fauve but not the others so thanks for sharing. 😊 I have also found the patterns from Estelina Bordeaux very nice. They come in English too and sizes 34-50.
agree ! as someone who's half spanish and half french but born + raised in australia, my height stunted at 5ft; BUT sewing my own clothing has saved me so so much. women's clothing in australia tends to be more narrow/shapeless and very elongated, fitting more toward northern european genetics. i think the word "short" to some people is in their mind, 5'3" - 5'5" but for the rest of us ladies that're actually quite petite (considering we also tend to come with a slight bit more curvature to our hips and chest too), what're we meant to do ? even like you said, even just trying to find simple patterns. there's definitely a lot of inclusivity that still needs to come in the fashion industry for sure
Learning how to make your own pattern block is an absolute life saver. Pants block, shirt block, dress block, etc. Once you have those finished you can make any style of garment you want.

Ok, wow, the content of this video is amazing. This is the first time one of your videos has come up on my UA-cam feed and it's about time! I'm so glad I found you. I've been sewing for 3 years and to be honest, over the last 2, I've grown tired of the over-sized, loose, flouncy designs that so many of the UK/US indy designers have been offering. It's not a look that compliments my body type at all - and I am forever having to make so many adjustments. The designers you've showcased here look like they offer more in style, fit and interesting lines and I look forward to trying some of their patterns. I just hope that their instructions aren't difficult for me to understand. I'm still new enough that sometimes even the US patterns are challenging for me understand what exactly it is they want me to do! Thanks for opening up the sewing world for us!
Thanks for creating this video. Immensely appreciated 😊. I'm always on the lookout for unique patterns from outside the US. It seems to be more difficult to find interesting designs. When I was a kid, the big four had variety. I used to buy many of the Vogue Individualist patterns. Sadly those went the way of the dinosaur. The big four are now the big one... I still check them out for costumes and historical stuff. Now in my 50s, I don't want to give up on fun clothes. Most everything I wear and sew is black and I take the time to make it all the same shade of black. Still holding onto Goth a bit.

Something I’ve always noticed and wondered about is the plethora of really unique and beautiful clothes for sale on Etsy that are designed and made by designers in Eastern European countries like Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and others. And people from these countries so often speak English that I wonder now if they might also have patterns available not only in their native tongue but maybe even translated? Could be worth a look! Also - that check fabric for the cape? Chef’s kiss 🤌🏻 And with so many colours in the check I imagine it being fairly versatile too.
Woah! Great choices, thank you so much for doing this research and sharing. All of these designs have so many details that I'm not used to seeing in the English speaking designers I'm familiar with. I can't choose which of these French designers I like best because they all bring something super new and interesting to me. I will say that I'm loving the diagonal seam details. They open up so many creative possibilities.
I felt the same! It really seemed like there was WAY more variety in the shapes and details. Less beginner-friendly of course, but definitely more interesting!

Hi Dear, thanks for sharing this with us, I am French and knew 2 of the designers you mentioned (Maison Fauve and les lubies de Cadia). I would recommend also the following one: Atelier Bernie, Bélène Paris (pattern also in english), Atelier des premières, lefoudecoudre (male designer - patterns for male so), methode mathilde and barapatron (this is an unsual one as with this brand you are able to create a pattern based on your own measurment - not yet tested though but will surely test it in future as I love the idea)
Great video Steph! You should have seen me jumping from my cell phone to follow them on Instagram to these designer links while at the same time listening to your reviews. I am very inspired! It's my guess that all these style lines, pleats, interesting shoulders are most flattering to the generally slimmer population of French women. Little did they know there is a hungry market for them here in America too ha ha! I have always wanted to try some of the German patterns but am hesitant to spend my money - I would eat up a German Pattern Edit if you did one. Thanks!

Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I would like to let you know about my own brand, also French, called Ose Patterns ("ose" means "being bold" in French). To tell you about my background, I changed my career to study at a fashion school and in a maison for two years. I learnt pattern making with the draping technique so this is how I create my designs. One of the patterns that encapsulates my aesthetics the most is the DELANO dress, with its statement sleeves. My patterns, instructions, videos are in English (and French obviously). Happy summertime !

I love French patterns, it’s a great way to practice language skills. Some other designers I enjoy are Étoffe Malicieuse (lingerie) and Just Patterns. So glad your vid popped up in my feed, I love your taste! ❤
I have a few of Cadia’s patterns on my radar. Thanks for sharing new to me pattern makers! That plaid fabric would make a gorgeous cape! I hope it’s a good choice. Re the Hussard Jeans, I share the concern about that curved yoke. It is a nice touch tho.
Thanks for sharing. I have been sewing for 4 years and adore sewing vintage patterns from Renaissance/ Colonial/Victorian/ Edwardian Eras for myself. I also sew for myself 1920s - 1970ss for myself. I have about 450 Factory Fold patterns that date back to 1875-1960s. I wear all my vintage makes every chance I get; especially on vacations outside of the USA. I am interested in Japanese patterns in casual designs.
Adding a BIG DISCLAIMER. I just purchased a pattern from Atelier 8 and it's only printable in A0 or A4 paper size which is not the standard 8.5 x 11, so unfortunately I am not able to print properly in Canada on a standard printer. I am attempting now to trace onto exam room paper using my laptop screen, although it's slippery and not 100% accurate, I'm hoping with my tiny bit of experience I can straighten and fix my drafts enough to get them workable. I also had to figure out how to disable the touch screen to do this. It's now become a 5-6 hr project just making the pattern. I'm not hating it, it's teaching me a lot, and if I get a wearable garment out of this I will be super pleased, cause I'm loving the European designs.
Ooh, the "jedi jacket" (we just rebranded it) looks so cool. I really want to make it now. I made the Maison Fauve Pilar jacket last year, and it was one of my favourite makes of 2023.
Great video! I'm French living in Australia so I keep my eye on both english and french patterns, though I tend to sew more english patterns - I find that the french style is too fancy for me haha. Have you looked at Make my Lemonade patterns? There are so many! Atelier Bernie and Belene Paris seem to be all the rage with the french sewing community! I'm really curious about other non-english designers. I can imagine Italian or Norwegian designs being very different.

I didn't know these creators but I loved many of their patterns, I recommend atelier des premiere and belene paris, they have a variety and patterns in English.
I have sewn a couple of French patterns and have loved their additional details and unusual style lines. Thanks for the video, you've given some new names for me to explore.

Thanks for the lovely patterns. I had not heard about some of these brands before. Some pattern companies make a lot of shapeless sacklike dresses, which do not suit me, since I’m already short and round. 😅. I need structure.
Just found you and clicked the subscribe button. Thank you for this informative and authentic video. I’m German and my experience with French patterns is, that one has to think two sizes below your normal size. Often the bends are to feminine means soft for me.

I recently found out about Maison Fauve and I love their designs. I also really liked the top stitched darts and bought the Pilar Jacket, which has them at the neckline. Nice and fun details!

I really enjoyed this video. I have just made the Maison Fauve Zenith blouse in a white embroidered voile and it is a beauty that really shows off the sunburst darts around the neck. Next on my list is their Salto top. They have some really lovely patterns.
Thanks for sharing, I've never heard of any of these designers! I love the French aesthetic. I recently stumbled upon Apolline patterns. I haven't made anything from them but I have my eye on the Manarola dress. Some if not all patterns are also available in English and go up to a French size 48.
Thank you so much for sharing these brands. I usually end up shopping the big 4 patterns on sale because most Indy brands release such basic patterns for astronomical prices. I am always looking for a fashionable pattern with a new technique that keeps me interested in sewing. The Oxana pattern at les lubies de cadia checks off all thos boxes for me. Merci et au revoir!
Please make the cape in the check fabric because there is a time to break the rule of versatility. This cape + your happy tweed is that occasion. Because it is such a distinct, fairly unusual cold weather topper, a one of a kind piece such as you envision would make you happy and proud. And because you have the neutral bottom rule, it will go with those pieces.

Thankyou for this, introducing us to brands that have interesting unique details. I like the leslubesdecardia patterns and want to make the jacket you highlighted. I do have a couple of maison fauve pattens the Chelsea blouse, and the salto top which I want to make up.

Two of my favourites. As a German living in Canada, I also like some of the German pattern companies 😊. Schnittmuster Berlin is one of them.
I love the cape but I have so many jackets already :( I've been wanting some trouser shorts for dance, so I might make the Olek shorts from Les Lubies if I can add a half-elastic waistband.
Some great information on French sewing designers. I’ve heard of a few but never tried them … yet. That cape fabric was perfect and exactly what I was imagining when I saw the pattern. Would it be possible to create a reversible cape using that fabulous check on one side and a plain on the other side? Might make it too thick and not sufficiently drapey though. Just a thought.
Living in Quebec I can attest that most French Canadian people are quite short and have very petite bone structures with narrow shoulders and hips compared to the rest of the Canadian population. Being a Quebecois import I always feel huge next to everyone around me, and resort to making my own clothes in order to wear things that actually fit me. To be clear I am 5'5" and wear a 36" bust, and I cannot find clothing off the rack, because I am too large compared to the rest of the population.
That is fascinating, and also must be frustrating! Whenever I visit Paris or elsewhere in France, I definitely notice that people seem both smaller and shorter as well. And then if I'm in say, Sweden, suddenly I am the shortest person in the room 😂
@@StephSewnit’s a thing!😅 going from average height to smaller or taller than the average in a region can be quite jarring. In terms of fashion, for practical purposes, I look to Spain, Italy and even south of France for fashion inspo, because the body shapes are more similar to mine despite living in Northern Europe.

Hello Steph ! Thanks for sharing the different designers ! Hope you don't mind me commenting, but I would like to let you know about my own brand, also French, called Ose Patterns ("ose" means "being bold" in French). To tell you about my background, I changed my career to study at a fashion school and in a maison for two years. I learnt pattern making with the draping technique so this is how I create my designs. One of the patterns that encapsulates my aesthetics the most is the DELANO dress, with its statement sleeves. My patterns, instructions, videos are in English (and French obviously). Happy summertime !

I love French patterns, it’s a great way to practice language skills. Some other designers I enjoy are Étoffe Malicieuse (lingerie) and Just Patterns. So glad your vid popped up in my feed, I love your taste! ❤

Thanks for sharing. I have been sewing for 4 years and adore sewing vintage patterns from Renaissance/ Colonial/Victorian/ Edwardian Eras for myself. I also sew for myself 1920s - 1970ss for myself. I have about 450 Factory Fold patterns that date back to 1875-1960s. I wear all my vintage makes every chance I get; especially on vacations outside of the USA. I am interested in Japanese patterns in casual designs.
Adding a BIG DISCLAIMER. I just purchased a pattern from Atelier 8 and it's only printable in A0 or A4 paper size which is not the standard 8.5 x 11, so unfortunately I am not able to print properly in Canada on a standard printer. I am attempting now to trace onto exam room paper using my laptop screen, although it's slippery and not 100% accurate, I'm hoping with my tiny bit of experience I can straighten and fix my drafts enough to get them workable. I also had to figure out how to disable the touch screen to do this. It's now become a 5-6 hr project just making the pattern. I'm not hating it, it's teaching me a lot, and if I get a wearable garment out of this I will be super pleased, cause I'm loving the European designs.

Ooh, the "jedi jacket" (we just rebranded it) looks so cool. I really want to make it now. I made the Maison Fauve Pilar jacket last year, and it was one of my favourite makes of 2023.

Great video! I'm French living in Australia so I keep my eye on both english and french patterns, though I tend to sew more english patterns - I find that the french style is too fancy for me haha. Have you looked at Make my Lemonade patterns? There are so many! Atelier Bernie and Belene Paris seem to be all the rage with the french sewing community! I'm really curious about other non-english designers. I can imagine Italian or Norwegian designs being very different.

I didn't know these creators but I loved many of their patterns, I recommend atelier des premiere and belene paris, they have a variety and patterns in English.

Thanks for the lovely patterns. I had not heard about some of these brands before. Some pattern companies make a lot of shapeless sacklike dresses, which do not suit me, since I’m already short and round. 😅. I need structure.

I really enjoyed this video. I have just made the Maison Fauve Zenith blouse in a white embroidered voile and it is a beauty that really shows off the sunburst darts around the neck. Next on my list is their Salto top. They have some really lovely patterns.

Thanks for sharing, I've never heard of any of these designers! I love the French aesthetic. I recently stumbled upon Apolline patterns. I haven't made anything from them but I have my eye on the Manarola dress. Some if not all patterns are also available in English and go up to a French size 48.

Please make the cape in the check fabric because there is a time to break the rule of versatility. This cape + your happy tweed is that occasion. Because it is such a distinct, fairly unusual cold weather topper, a one of a kind piece such as you envision would make you happy and proud. And because you have the neutral bottom rule, it will go with those pieces.

Two of my favourites. As a German living in Canada, I also like some of the German pattern companies 😊. Schnittmuster Berlin is one of them.

I love the cape but I have so many jackets already :( I've been wanting some trouser shorts for dance, so I might make the Olek shorts from Les Lubies if I can add a half-elastic waistband.

Some great information on French sewing designers. I’ve heard of a few but never tried them … yet. That cape fabric was perfect and exactly what I was imagining when I saw the pattern. Would it be possible to create a reversible cape using that fabulous check on one side and a plain on the other side? Might make it too thick and not sufficiently drapey though. Just a thought.
Whoa that is SUCH a cool idea! The check is actually pretty lightweight, so if I got a black wool flannel I think I would work.

Living in Quebec I can attest that most French Canadian people are quite short and have very petite bone structures with narrow shoulders and hips compared to the rest of the Canadian population. Being a Quebecois import I always feel huge next to everyone around me, and resort to making my own clothes in order to wear things that actually fit me. To be clear I am 5'5" and wear a 36" bust, and I cannot find clothing off the rack, because I am too large compared to the rest of the population.
That is fascinating, and also must be frustrating! Whenever I visit Paris or elsewhere in France, I definitely notice that people seem both smaller and shorter as well. And then if I'm in say, Sweden, suddenly I am the shortest person in the room 😂
@@StephSewnit’s a thing!😅 going from average height to smaller or taller than the average in a region can be quite jarring.
In terms of fashion, for practical purposes, I look to Spain, Italy and even south of France for fashion inspo, because the body shapes are more similar to mine despite living in Northern Europe.
At least once in every video you will make me laugh. Like tap to go back 10 seconds to laugh again type stuff. With your skills, perspective, and personality, you should have a lot more followers than you do. Hopefully soon. Keep up the great work. Looking forward to your French inspired makes.
