I know this is an older video but definitely loved it and needed to thank you for helping everyone out with how the process looks in REAL life! I admire your ability to be proud while being able to point out parts that were a challenge or may not have gone your way. Imo that’s what drives us forward! Well that and gorgeous fabric.
Hi Steph! I really love your approach to sewing as well as video making. Yours is such a refreshing and inspiring viewpoint! I think it's important for sewists of all levels to know that mistakes are inevitable, and you have to decide for yourself if it's something you can live with or something that needs to be fixed. Also, no one is looking as closely at your makes as you. If you can't see the mistake from 3 feet away, I think it's something that can be lived with. Your coats are all lovely, and your plans are exciting! Thank you for taking the time to make these wonderful videos.
You would look sweet and charming in a pink wool cape, but I have to say I gasped an "ooooh" out loud when I saw that beautiful orange check wool! Also, I bow down to you, queen, the double welt button holes on that trench are fan-freaking-tastic!

I hope you are pleasantly surprised when you start working with the dry oilskin. I just finished cutting out a coat from the merchant and Mills traditional oil skin. It was very easy to cut with a rotary cutter. It stitches easily, and it finger presses super easily! I was surprised how much fun it is to work with. The only thing that didn’t work was turning is sharp point, so I’m very glad my pattern has a curved collar and pocket flaps. I hope you find the dry oil skin as a nice to work with. Also, just want to say you did a great job, matching the plaid on that wrap coat.

Hi Steph gr8 video of your makes. Gr8 colours and garments, I wouldn't focus so much on the parts that didn't go so smoothly we get better with practice that gives us experience. Your plan is to make more so you haven't been put off. Keep going.
You pulled out a vintage style pattern which made me laugh and check my patterns to see if I would call any of them vintage, I've got plans for plenty of them. Hi. Love your coats, the orange plaid is amazing, all that matching. You probably know you could add 'thread chains' to the side seams to act as belt carriers. It might be an option for you. I love vintage patterns but I was often outside their sizing so I got rid of all my collections 😢
I need to expand my skills in coat making as I have some gorgeous wools and also waxed coat fabric. Thanks for your inspiration, I just need to take a deep breath and cut into it! 😊
Honestly, I loved everyone of the pieces that you showe and I’m excited about your upcoming projects. I am most excited about the Burberry trench redo. I recently tackled a project with some lv deadstock. I have been wanting to make this dress since I bought the fabric a year ago, but was intimidated because while the fabric was cheap for what it was, but it was still expensive. It also had a very visible motif of lines and I too cut out two of the same sleeves which was horrible. Luckily for me I did have just enough fabrics left to correct the problem.
I'm so glad you were able to salvage it!! And good for you for taking the plunge and cutting into the special fabric ❤️
I did the exact same thing with my first coat make. I bought fabric off Goldhawk Road that was supposed to be Burberry deadstock (I’m now doubtful it is), and I must have basted the set in sleeves 3x and finally decided that was as good as it’s going to get. I never would have bought that fabric had I known 😂. But as usual, I learned what not to do the next time! Would love a video on best places to go on Goldhawk Road 😊.

It's sad that everything has to be prefaced with excuses and disclaimers these days, but the 'go annoy somebody else' made me subscribe. I love to see everyone's sewing projects no matter where they are in their sewing journey, we all learn from each other.

Enjoyed this video. My teenage years were in the 70s so felt quite nostalgic! I have found that the more years I have sewn the better the outcomes have become. All the mistakes we make seem to improve our sewing in the long term … that is not to say that I don’t make any mistakes now! Sewing is a hobby where we can always learn something knew I have found . You could always make thread loops to ensure you don’t lose your belt on your wrap coat. Looking forward to all your makes. I enjoy making coats and jackets once I get started but I do so procrastinate beforehand!
I really do feel like 70s teens were the luckiest fashion-wise (maybe minus those quilted skirts). I'm glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane ❤️
The oilskin works just fine with a bit of rubbing with a warm hand. You will not mis not being able to iron it is my eperience.

Brilliant to see your coats made from vintage patterns. They are fab, and I'm sure the new and improved versions will be even more fantastic.
Personally I'd probably go with a more low key style of coat for the pink wool and a more neutral fabric for the cape, for a sense of balance between more out-there elements, but I'm sure you'll rock whichever combo you end up choosing, and I look forward to seeing the finished garments.
I have a couple of vintage coat patterns in my collection that I'd like to make eventually, but I want to get one from a contemporary, more hand-holdy, pattern under my belt first to get to grips with the techniques before trying them on a pattern with more scanty instructions.
Maybe for the orange plaid coat belt you could make a loop on the inside of the coat to feed the belt through when you're not wearing it. Then you wouldn't need to worry about matching the shell fabric. (I believe Bella Loves Patterns' new coat pattern has such a feature.)
Which Goldhawk Road shop is it that stocks the Burberry and similar fabrics?
I love vintage coats: I used to purchase vintage coats when they could be found at good prices in good condition. I'm so impressed with how many coats you've sewn. They're all great and wearable! I made a drape-front coat in a geometric patterned wool that I could not match and it's fine, if anyone notices oh well . The wine-colored wool raglan style coat will be beautiful! I have wool plaid fabric I'm going to make the Merchant and Mills September Coat (vintage inspired design) from, but I'm going to make a muslin first to figure out the sizing. I don't often make muslins but I want to make sure for this one as i plan on wearing it for a long time. Thanks for sharing!
I love making coats, they're my favourite projects. My oopsie was a big one, I let my ego pick the size of a previous coat so that led to it being tight at the shoulders and arms. I did a coat in a wax fabric coat last year and I used the rounded handles of my scissors to press the seams and the best part part was that I could do it while sitting at my sewing table. So I suggest you give that a try
I'm really excited to see your dry oil skin trench. I've often looked at it, but am one of those people you mention who say they're nervous about it! I think seeing one person actually use it would be a big courage builder for me.
Also, in regards to the belt for your wrap coat, there is a new Bella Loves Patterns pattern that has a belt keeper on the inside. That seems like a good alternative to belt loops if you didn't want them. I know I would lose a loose belt for sure!
One of the first times I used my serger, I attached the neckband on the outside of the t-shirt. It was inserted perfectly, so I decided to make it a feature and just top stitched it down! No one has ever commented on it, and I’ve been thinking I should see something completely inside out to add interest 😁

See, I still thought all of these looked great! I follow a personal guideline i learned from the Love to Sew podcast - can you see the mistake from 3 feet away? No? Then you probably don’t need to fix it! I will consider if i know i can materially improve the garment.
Great info & thanks for sharing! Love the blue cape--but good point about actual wearing! Yes on the pink cape idea, but the plaid is cute, too. The 🍊 plaid is fun--you could always add a black or biege for the belt loops on the side--but i too have love/hate with belted coats vs buttons. Also on warmth/wind proofing, some vintage coats I've bought have had thick flannel interlining in addition to fleece backed lining! And been there, done that with cutting same side sleeve twice, and/or inserting into wrong side. 😂 And getting creative when a little short of fabric... We have to love problem solving to be a great garment makers!!
If I make a belt for an item I have gotten into the habit of tacking the middle of it to the back of the garment so it doesn't either go missing or slip through the loops all the way if untied

Lovely to see a new video from you! I've just completed a wool coat and it the 4th one I've made but the first one that is almost perfect the only thing that didn't go quite right was the finish on two bound button holes on the interior but the rest is perfect the fit everything! So proud of it. I still wear the other coats I made though and still love them. And I also really fancy trying the cape pattern I've got out!!
