The Tragic Truth About Alice in Chains

- Опубліковано 17 чер 2024
- Alice in Chains first rose to fame in 1990 with their debut album Facelift, and the band’s combination of grunge and heavy metal proved to be a massive success.
The band - made up of singer Layne Staley, guitarist and singer Jerry Cantrell, bassist Mike Starr, and drummer Sean Kinney - continued to find success with their sophomore album Dirt, but soon, tragedy struck.
Starr and Staley both struggled with addiction, and sadly, both would die because of this. In addition, Cantrell had an extremely difficult childhood, and both he and Kinney have suffered injuries that have affected their music. Here’s the tragic truth about Alice in Chains.

If you got the chance to see Alice In Chains live without the original members, would you?
I guess
I saw them at the Whiskey on Sunset Strip right before they took off. Amazing show! Saw them on the Black Gives Way To Blue tour and it was great.
Yeah, a good band live is a good thing to experience, a great band live is a great thing to experience.
If people want to choose to get pissed off or offended by a new member of an established band they are free to choose to do so, but it's not up to them to decide the path of life for someone else. If the members of the band want to make music with this other person, that's their decision, just as it was Layne's decision to walk away from the band. Life is about living, not sitting idle in judgement of others.
Yep. Saw them Melbourne, Australia 27/02/14. Walking Papers opened for them.
I don't think so. I'm not pissed off or offended or anything like that, hell I don't blame them at all for wanting to carry on. I just can't seem to get into them since Layne died. Just speaking truth, I'm sure they can carry o just fine without me. lol.. Wish them the very best💯🤘😎
Laynes voice was amazing, but him and Jerry harmonizing was magic
Painfully beautiful
No group ever sounded like Alice in Chains. Timeless!
Yes, their voices complimented each other. Fluke really when you consider how they met.

Misery is a conduit to some of the greatest art.
Jerry cantrell is absolutely right about layne being irreplaceable, because he's arguably the greatest grunge frontman.
Jerry: "Layne is irreplaceable."
Also Jerry: *Replaces Layne with a guy who tries to sound like Layne
@@wrathofbabushka8475 But that's why it worked so freaking well in my opinion.
Tyson Williams Yet, no mention was made of Jerry’s coke addiction (no offense, but if they talked about the whole band....?Jerry’s admitted himself)

This was, by far, the greatest of that eras bands. They just did not make a bad record or song. Ever. I loved their music, lyrics & vocals.

Well said! Layne and Alice in Chains were true originals!
That makes no sense.
People need to lay off Duval and Jerry. No one can replace Layne, but Duval is a damn fine vocalist and Jerry can still write some outstanding guitar riffs. Layne was always the voice of the band, but Jerry is the heart.
Forreal, I love Layne one of my favorite singers ever ever but AiC was and always will be Jerry’s band, he was the mastermind, obviously Jerry is a legend regardless but it’s kind of a shame how much he gets overshadowed by Layne even tho he was the true genius behind the band and one of the best songwriters ever. Nobody could replace what Layne provided as a singer and a good lyricist but will does a good job doing his own thing while making sure the band still sounds like AiC and Jerry is still writing kickass songs, Will has even shown off his writing ability with great songs like acid bubble, the guy is really talented and gets way way too much shit from fans just because he’s not Layne, irritates me when ppl act like Jerry Sean and mike should’ve never reformed the band just because Layne was gone, Jerry always was the primary songwriter, Sean was there from the beginning, inez joined right around their peak, these guys deserved to reunite and continuing making money and doing what they love, they thought will fit the band so they added him and that’s all that matters. They still make good music and they get to continue doing what they love making music/touring and making some good money. Sry for the long as response, I just get passionate when ppl just shit in will because he’s not Layne or shit on Jerry for reforming the band and adding will
Kinda like The Who, the mastermind is Townsend. Jerry Cantrell is like him. There's no band without him.
Sorry without Layne there’s no Alice In Chains
There is not to say I don’t like Jerry I do
I enjoyed his solo album but yah okay
100% No one will ever be able to replace Layne, but Duval is the ultimate replacement. Devil Put Dinosaurs Here is a classic in my opinion. One of my top AiC releases.... I've seen the original line up and I've seen the new one. I've never left disappointed.
Duval just doesn't have the right energy, in my opinion. He sounds great on their albums but his live performances seem like he's in the wrong band. He just doesn't have that raw power with the ability to stay on pitch.
NUTSHELL is one of the best written songs of all time!!! Hands down.. that song has gotten me through a lot of shit. There’s something so powerful in his words that really talks to me
It's their best song IMO
That is a meaningful song to me and my husband from a difficult period we went through. One of my favorite songs.
I've been playing this song on my guitar recently and can't stop thinking about playing it because it hits my heart so much.
Rotten Apple for me. That line "crawling back to start" I hear often in my everyday. Happy you made it past those demons. Hang in there
Yes yes yes! Nutshell all the way! Unplugged!
BEST unplugged performance of all time.
Yesssssss…I still have it on VHS ❤
Layne Staley.......was one of the best voices in rock music.
I Totally Agree! Him & Chris Cornell The 2 Best Ever!!🎤🎤🙏❤

They are my favorite band of all time. Their lack of longevity, and lack of touring keeps them from being the best in my opinion.

@@920WASHBURN What is fact?

Layne paid for Demri's surgery and although she was warned not to do anymore drugs, she did, and died. Layne lost his will to live. Sean didn't get sober until well after Layne's death.

wonderful band.
That's it exactly! The other bands from that era lacked the emotional weight that they had in every song.
Cantrell without a doubt is one of the most underrated vocalist, song writer guitarist out there.
I can't agree more!
He’s one of the best songwriters ever, extremely underrated to the general public, very solid singer too. Legendary guitar player as well, amazing lyricist too. Honestly one of the best rock/metal musicians ever imo. Absolute legend
"All this time I swore I'd never be like my old man. What the hey it's time to face exactly what I am."
Sadly another contributing factor in Layne's emotional struggles is the fact that his biological dad was an addict himself, abandoned Layne at a young age, and did not make an effort to make contact with his son until he became famous. No one can deliver a song with the same intensity and depth as Layne. I truly admire Jerry Cantrell's strength. Not only is he a phenomenal musician, but a remarkable human being. His ability to keep pushing on through the darkness and never give up. His work ethic, his ability to use his talent to touch so many lives while remaining humble, gracious and grounded throughout the entire process.
His father was a POS. His father contributed to his son’s decline and then get to access his trust$$$
I honestly believe the “Dad” is what tore Layne apart at a very young age. I’ve loved this guy since 89 when I ran across him. 💔
RIP Layne Staley
Burn in hell,ok !!¡!!
RIP Scott Weiland
One of their best songs that never got air play is “Don’t Follow”. It really is their entire story summed up in on song
Yes, I skip that song becos it feels so bittersweet. "Hey I ain't ever coming home" just speaks so much of Layne's situation. When Demri died he probably never felt like he was home ever.
I will continue to skip that song until I need to hear it fully. Such a masterpiece.
WTF is air play?
@@danegonzales5651 it does speak to Layne’s situation but it was actually solely written by Jerry music and lyrics, a lot of the songs and lyrics Jerry wrote also applied to what Layne was going through, they both lived tough lives. Anyway jerry is a genius

I saw and met some of the band when they opened for Ozzy. Layne in a cast and wheelchair got around the stage better than Ozzy did.
Not surprising.
LOL! I saw Ozzy live when he was in his fourties, he moved like an arthritic old man. He called out the overzealous security on their violence, so props to him anyway.
We need more bands like the era Alice came from. Rest Well Layne
I guess it's coming for the last time👍

No doubt the greatest singer of all time! No one sings like you anymore.
Let's argue over an opinion instead of respecting all of the great artest that we have the privilege to listen to by the way Layne was better hahaha ay better
Let's not argue over the worth of two dead men who have given us quite a lot, who had respect for each other and who are survived by their respective bands in good spirit. Both were fantastic in their own way. Jeez.
Ronnie Tee I disagree. Layne was better than Cornell. A lot of people think so but whatever.
Layne and Chris Cornell both had amazing, irrreplacable voices. They were both fantastic. I have soo much respect for how talented they both were.
Could you imagine how Eddy Vedder feels today, knowing out of all the singers from that era Nirvana, Soundgarden,AIC and STP, he's the only one left and he was hard into drugs as well.
Not really. Not heavy drugs like heroin, at least as habit. He is more pot and booze. He often has a bottle of wine in the shows to enjoy and calm some nerve. PJ is a clean and healthy band, maybe some madness the early years but they went throught a lot of tragedy and got their shit together.
Vedder never suffered from depression, lucky bastard. Surfing was his drug of choice, he let it all out on a surf board!
@@misstembo2000 he was mostly an angry man until vitalogy, that was his way to deal with his father not being his father and all that drama

Sorry for your loss!
I'm without words and anyone who knows me knows that is almost never. Wow.
That must have been tough I’m sorry for your loss.
Mike and Layne are still in the band, they are just somewhere else.
Mike was fired
This is overall so heartbreaking. Layne's vocals were insane, they could have went so far. And it's sad for the rest of the band. Yes, losing their friend/family Layne & later Mike Star. I remember watching celebrity rehab when he was on there. During the time I was struggling with the same addiction. Later as well as Demri ended up with Endocarditis , which came back . Also a pacemaker that became infected & removed. So in total my chest has been cut open four times. The first surgery I almost didn't make. I spent two year's except for a month in between in nursing home. Intense physical therapy etc. I'm beyond lucky to still be her. I had a cousin who like Demri passed away from it. On August second, I celebrated 40 months clean. I chose to share this in hope if anyone that's struggling reads this. That it's so not worth it. For ourselves, our loved ones. And that there's only a few outcomes. I went through true hell and my family. I wish that on nobody. It's never too late to reach out or decide enough is enough.
Great film! So cool how you posted the help #'s at the end. Thank you!
Mike Starr looks like Chris Pontius
I was thinking the same exact thing haha
OMFG 😂😂😂
You mean Chris pontius looks like Mike Starr 😉
I've found over the years that when I'm playing my guitar by myself, just freeform, that it feels so comfortable, so right, to just slide into a Jerry Cantrell type of groove.
I play along with unplugged at least once a week.
I pretty much learned it note for note in the late nineties while in high school.
It has always served as a calming, relaxing and easy way to center myself mentally.
It's fun to imagine that we are just buddies jamming together.
And the crowd applaus after each track is aimed at me for pulling off whatever song I just played.
But yeah, unplugged is a collection of some of the best written and funnest songs to play. Ever.
What I love most about AIC is that they were able to do slow melodic songs but also the classic hard rock songs, truly an incredible band!
Finally. It’s so hard to see anything about AIC online. Thanks. I love the way Layne and Jerry harmonize.
There's HEAPS of AIC videos etc online, matey. Loads of it is out there
Nellie Silvers really? Can’t find any documentary about them. I am not talking songs, or music videos. Give me links.
Sometimes someone comes along so connected to life that there is little to no difference between their music and the way they experience life.
Rotten Apple has got me through rocky times, RIP Layne Staley.
One of the craziest things I’ve noticed about Alice In Chains is that they’re the greatest band of all time.
Jerry is a generational talent and they’ve never even released a mediocre song..everything is absolute 🔥 and they’re the only band / artist I’ve never had to press skip on. Mind boogaling . Rainier Fog gets better on every listen 👂🏼 That’s the truth. 💯
I wept when Layne died, but I felt no less excited when I finally got to see Alice In Chains perform, it was an incredible show. I was raised a musician's daughter, on classic rock and the blues, grunge was -my- music, this band is so close to my heart it is a part of me, and always will be. I would listen to Jerry play any time, anywhere, and find myself transported to that feeling when life wasn't so big, and important, and full of responsibilities, it is the sound of my youth. And I could not wish for a better soundtrack.
Beautiful job on this short doc!
One of my favorite bands
Hands down the best band in the grunge scene!!!
thank you for uplaoding this such beautiful memories . layne was the monster of the 90's era . RIP
Thank you for making this video!! I'm a grunger & I don't think great bands like this get enough attention!!
I cant believe people are still upset about William DuVall joining up with the band. Aside from the fact that he has now been in the band longer than Layne Staley, he was very respectful about stepping in. They even got the approval of Layne's mother first, which they did not even need. She gave them all her best, and the rest is history. Drugs made AIC's biggest hits, but it also killed the band. Whether Layne OD'd on that couch that day or ten years later, the band was moving on. Layne was the greatest, like many others I named my son after him, but this "No Layne No Chains" nonsense is just worn out by now. The band still has a LOT to offer, if you want to miss out on it because you are stuck in the 90s, that's your choice, just like Drug addiction was Layne's choice. Like they all said, he just wasn't going to quit. But the band was unanimous, and they decided they should not and will not punish themselves for choices Layne made that cannot be undone. They are still Alice in Chains and they still have a band to manage, and they do it on their terms, as well they should. Not respecting their decision at this point is just sour grapes.
Very well spoken! If anyone was in their shoes they would do the same.
Nice comment, just to add on to it Jerry has always been the mastermind behind the band writing half the lyrics when Layne was around and the large majority of the music, it was his band from the beginning, losing Layne sucked but Sean mike and jerry had every right to continue, if Jerry died Instead if Layne I would understand ending the band for good because he was the main songwriter, losing Layne absolutely sucked but Jerry was also a singer for them so he was just able to increase his amount of singing instead of adding a new guy to sing everything and all Layne’s songs. They deserved to continue as a band and make a living doing what they loved, will does a great job and is a great match with Jerry, no he will never be Layne and he doesn’t try to be but he does a very good job singing old Layne stuff and he crushes it on new material, plus his good guitar playing was a fantastic addition to the band. The no Layne no chains crowd really irritates me. Anyway sorry for the super long comment man
Dude very well said! 🙌

I will always be heartbroken over Layne’s death. I always wanted to see him live, but I was only in 3rd grade when he did their last tour. Always held out hope they’d tour again, but I was a senior in high school when he passed. I have seen them multiple times since then, but it’s just not the same (even though Jerry is amazing) & cannot ever be without Layne.

They deserve so much more recognition then they get, especially Layne. It puts the biggest smile on my face to hear about them from time to time. It would’ve been absolutely amazing to see these guys play in the early 90s. Original lineup, or with Inez was just. so. good.

Totally! It just goes to show you that the ones behind the scenes who play the same overplayed songs over and over are the same closed and narrow-minded fools of a homogeneous orientated existence. My textbook example is the one's that play the boys are back in town nonstop yet never even considered playing cold sweat!
Just a comment saying that I still love William as a singer/artist, and I'm glad AIC found him and kept putting out music. Layne's passing was horrific for everyone involved, and I'm glad they all found a way to keep his memory alive in a healthy way 🖤
