[I edited this post like 21 times. I just forgot stuff. Last Edit Added SYSTEM.CB] Not knowing everything you tried installing Windows 98SE, I offer the following. To be clear, you can install Windows 98SE from the hard drive, but you probably know that already. During my install, I had to change the SYSTEM.INI file and resume installation due to having too much ram. Resuming the install only affected the layout of the Start Menu. Being familiar with the Start Menu, it was easy to correct after the install. I had to put in the option to skip the scandisk as well, but I do not remember why. Assumptions (You have a good bootsector, and you can boot from the hard disk into Windows 98 DOS mode) Suggestion: Maybe limit the partition to 32GB for a proof of concept install. Here are my recommendations for each file. Ignore the horizontal lines. @@ZipplyZane That would be awesome, unfortunately MS was notorious for making undocumented features in MS-DOS, additionally I believe the version of DOS win95/98 was built on top of (MS-DOS 7) had NO official documentation. It might even be possible to just tweak an existing implementation like FreeDOS. Not sure it would be worth the time and effort though...
Yeah I'm surprised he didn't mention the [vcache] MaxFileCache=261120 part; that was specifically what I had to do when I set up a win98 PC a couple of years ago. Also doing the install with only one stick of RAM.
@@rubblemonkey6904 The reason I brought it up is that I recently watched a video about Windows blocking out DR-DOS intentionally in the beta for Windows 3.1. In it, I discovered that DR-DOS 7 is apparently compatible with Windows 95. Since Windows 98 is Windows 95.1 essentially, I thought replacing the DOS component might work.
Way late to the party on this one, but this was just too entertaining not to comment. This was a fun process to watch. I too had seen this case years ago and had wondered on it's potential. Loved your choice of old-meets-new for the project!
@@DrLoverLover I guess so, but I more often see high end gaming/workstation builds or classic builds with old parts. A well thought out rig with modern parts that isn't super overkill is appealing in its own way.
Can you install win98 se on freedos and replace dos7 with it? I recall some legal stuff and one being able to replace ms dos with other dos'es, mainly dr dos
FreeDOS was the first thing I tried actually, but I cut it out of the video since it was unfortunately a total dead end. It refused to boot with any expanded memory managers running, and with those disabled it would run basic DOS stuff but otherwise was pretty unusable.
So since this is a LGA1200 socket system; it most likely is running UEFI bios. Might need to change a few settings in it to support more of the legacy hardware he installed. It could also have a few chips on the board it's self to "emulate" a legacy south bridge chip to communicate to those legacy slots. Other then that; not sure. But that very old video card...yikes!
Honestly, I didn't expect this to become a Linux video, awesome! Though the most impressive thing is how that Intel chip managed to run all those games.
So, the first thing that came to mind for me seeing this case was “Home Theatre PC”. Something about the idea of a pyramid sitting next to a TV appeals to me.
The Maingear Prysma happens to be literally this; a pyramid-shaped computer that was supposed to go in home theater setups. It failed because it couldn't really fit in most setups, and it was too damned expensive.
I think a perfect gpu for this crazy build would be a Geforce PCX. You remember the rare PCI-e FX 5000 cards with an onboard AGP to PCI-e bridge chip. It should give you the feeling of having an AGP card in that system. =D
If you do not have an XP USB installer, you should create one, it can include most updates even ones past SP3 and even integrate drivers for newer systems and brings install times from over an hour (depending on hardware) down to minutes.
Wow. Great video. Great to see you running Linux, too! One thought I had was running a VM and setting it up to pass the PCI cards through to it. It would be quite interesting to see the results. KVMs can be set up to start at boot and hooking a monitor up to the GPU would effectively give you a PC independent of the host machine. That could be super cool!
LGR I was think they probably could but I’m not one to mess with VM and that sort of stuff. I would definitely be interested in seeing a follow up to this though.
Can Linux run the Windows Entertainment Pack natively? I know it can via DOSBox (note: do not run DOXBox in a virtual machine unless the programs don't have or need mouse support. The pointer'll go crazy).
@@Chaos89P If it works works with WineVDM, it's possible. That is how Wine handles 16-bit code. You can even get a version that runs on Windows 64-bit, if you want.
Trying to track down GPU related issues on a modern Linux release is such a pain. MESA this, DRI that, used to be so straight forward when the only thing that touched the GPU was the actual 3D game.
OMFG I want one of those! That's the coolest looking PC case I think I've ever seen! Wow! Such a pity that the thing is SO ridiculously expensive. I guess I'll need to get back in the workshop and build my own...
Now i get flashbacks from watching a news report of someone that had gotten stuck on a cast iron fence. The horror was that he had gotten himself speared up through the jaw...
This reminded me of the mid 00's, back when the e-sports scene was kicking off and huge lan/demo/gaming events, like Assembly, were the place to show off your obnoxiously lit computer case setup. Good times! E-sports are a huge thing in China, and these wild case designs are part of that scene, which is probably why they've been popping up so much lately.
Oh, thank you! I was legitimately starting to get worried about you after you didn't post a video yesterday. Maybe sounds silly, but with 2020 you never know, let's face it...
@@LGR I'm glad you didn't rush to meet the deadline, your quality is the most appealing part of the LGR channel. Why don't you put that 8800 Ultra in there with the Audigy card. I bet you could dual boot Linux and ReactOS, or even Phil's patched XP through his guide.
My goal was to get a PCI card working under Windows 9x or XP, cards like the 8800 Ultra are PCI-e. But seeing as that didn't work I'll likely be sticking a PCI-e card in there soon!
@@LGR Just some words of advice if you are going with a newer PCI-e GPU, and you are going to keep using Linux, go with an AMD card, as they just plain work better, as the open source AMD drivers are baked right into the latest Linux kernel updates, you just apply the update, reboot, and you are golden. Nvidia you will end up having a much harder time getting them to run, unless you go with a distro such as POP_OS! which has an Nvidia build, and while it works, it's a shot in the dark at what Nvidia cards fully work. Nvidia has been fairly hostile to those of us in the Linux community for a long time, and provided little to no help, or source code for their drivers so people have had to code them from scratch. AMD, and even Intel on the other hand have teams that contribute lots of code back to the Linux kernel, and even help fund Linux projects. Just to be clear this not fanboyism speaking, this is just my personal experience of having used Linux for nearly 2 1/2 decades at this point.
@@CommodoreFan64 Nvidia's drivers for older cards on Linux are very hit and miss, most from 2010 and prior have been abandoned and can lock up newer distros. Nouveau is great in those situations however, as they've been the best option for getting those older ones working. AMD cards are the best for no hassle for the most part, but a lot of older cards have been excluded from their open driver, I've tried Terascale cards and couldn't get them working. The ones with the best chance of working are from the last few years, but that won't really fit the retro brief he was aiming for, I suggested the Nvidia and Creative cards as he had on hand for the XP build and thought they would still be retro enough for it to stand out like he wanted.

Farewell pyramid pc. I has a new home now.
I remember reading the LGR twitter feed and seeing the photos of these cases and LGRs brain gears moving
Honestly one of the few Twitter things I wish I had been logged on to see
This is a perfect PC for me to run my MLM-business from home with.
I got The Verge flashbacks when you called the IO shield a bracket.
It's a bracket, isn't it?
@@override7486 it's actually a plate.
@@papayerWell, yeah, single sheet of metal shaped to have a locking mechanism, "clicking" on top of the cut0out itself. Sounds and looks like a bracket to me.

It's a brace! Now excuse me. Im going to tie it together with some tweezers
Odd I watched you unbox all this hardware but didnt see you smelling any of it...... Who are you and what have you done with the real LGR?
Probs too new. Not as delicious as a vintage ‘89.
This was the most chaotic build I have ever seen and I love every bit of it.
I would love to setup a server/media center computer in that case for my living room! with all of the modern rgb, you could really make it an epic piece of art!

I thought the same for a sec, but they filled that with components.
@@reptilez13 Saw that case on Luke Miani's channel recently too... weird how it's popping up everywhere.
I was just about to post this very comment. I thought he was that "mystery client" that they had.
The “looks like a bass pro shop” comment got me. Thank you Clint.
You could turn this into the machine that reads your arcade cards? I dunno how much work that would take but the pyramid of power would make an excellent arcade card box
Absolute gaming legend LGR, so much respect for continuing the preservation of this hardware man. I know this was about the pyramid but it was cool seeing that old hardware put to use on Linux.
I wouldn’t mind another eThrifting episode just browsing funky looking PC cases

what a crazy video! I am a fun of linux, I really like old computers and games, and I am really fond of exotic pc builds! And that's right there!!! 3/3!!! Great video!! I really enjoyed it!!!! Keep up the excellent job !!
This is honestly much more entertaining than typical build videos from "dedicated" "techtubers" like linux tech talks, jay's two centz, the guy with the buzzcut and a soul patch who used to work at Newegg, his friend lyle, gaming nexus, etc.
Nice way to kick off a Saturday. Thanks man.
I don't watch any of those. They all sound like complete numpties :D
Yeah. They seem like they are just doing it for money
The way that LGR is makes videos it feels that he likes likes to connect with his fans instead of only making videos to make money.
Whoa, this is cool. Kind of looks like that thing LTT is building for a client, but not quite.
I had actually thought this was a LTT video when I first got the notification.
Hey, I’m bisexual to!
@@Remls did they finish that thing ?
I think Alex in the LTT vid actually mentioned this case, saying they didn't necessarily need to make one from scratch
I thought LGR was the “client” of that pyramid build.

Not knowing everything you tried installing Windows 98SE, I offer the following.
Assumptions (You have a good bootsector, and you can boot from the hard disk into Windows 98 DOS mode)
Suggestion: Maybe limit the partition to 32GB for a proof of concept install.

That is all that I have. Hopefully, the new hardware supports Upper Memory Block.
If you do manage to install WIN98SE, I bet the next problem will involve Finding A Free Memory Region Using MSD.EXE For EMM386 + SB Live MIDI + Soundfonts for DOS Games like Doom & Duke3D.
BTW: Probably the hardest conventional memory dos game to run is Falcon 3.0. You can get some bonus points from me, if you manage it on new hardware.
Ever try seeing if you could replace the DOS component of Windows 98 with FreeDOS or another alternative that still has drivers for newer computers?
@@ZipplyZane That would be awesome, unfortunately MS was notorious for making undocumented features in MS-DOS, additionally I believe the version of DOS win95/98 was built on top of (MS-DOS 7) had NO official documentation. However I wonder if it would be possible to make a version of DOS compatible with win95/98 using resources covering the many hidden quirks of MS-DOS like the Undocumented DOS book. It might even be possible to just tweak an existing implementation like FreeDOS. Not sure it would be worth the time and effort though...
Yeah I'm surprised he didn't mention the

part; that was specifically what I had to do when I set up a win98 PC a couple of years ago.
@@ZipplyZane I didn't know that! Since that's the case it shouldn't be nearly as difficult to do as I thought.
Bonus: it's shaped like a christmas tree so you know what to do around that time
It is now around that time
Way late to the party on this one, but this was just too entertaining not to comment.
This was a fun process to watch. I too had seen this case years ago and had wondered on it's potential. Loved your choice of old-meets-new for the project!
It's actually refreshing to see a build on UA-cam that isn't on the bleeding edge of new tech.
@@DrLoverLover I guess so, but I more often see high end gaming/workstation builds or classic builds with old parts. A well thought out rig with modern parts that isn't super overkill is appealing in its own way.
I wonder if FreeDos might be your solution.
@@LGR I would have thought it could handle the more modern hardware. Awesome for trying though.
Any chance you tried OS/2?
@@LGR what about arca noae
So since this is a LGA1200 socket system; it most likely is running UEFI bios. Might need to change a few settings in it to support more of the legacy hardware he installed. It could also have a few chips on the board it's self to "emulate" a legacy south bridge chip to communicate to those legacy slots. Other then that; not sure. But that very old video card...yikes!
gotta have some kind of bumper for the top of this if you get it. you trip over something near this and that's it, your skull is obliterated
I love this! The Linux install just sweetens the video.
Your startup up music for that thing should be theremin (50's sci-fi) music.
Add actual theramin hardware to the case for that eerie no touch UI
Honestly, I didn't expect this to become a Linux video, awesome! Though the most impressive thing is how that Intel chip managed to run all those games.
So, the first thing that came to mind for me seeing this case was “Home Theatre PC”. Something about the idea of a pyramid sitting next to a TV appeals to me.
The Maingear Prysma happens to be literally this; a pyramid-shaped computer that was supposed to go in home theater setups.
It failed because it couldn't really fit in most setups, and it was too damned expensive.
Try not to get stabbed by the pyramid.
Why does this comment read like something out of 'Welcome To Night Vale'
Do not look at the pyramid. It does not like it.
Always wear protective gear around the pyramid.
Remember, the pyramid loves you.
Ok, so I wasn’t the only one thinking it.
I think a perfect gpu for this crazy build would be a Geforce PCX. You remember the rare PCI-e FX 5000 cards with an onboard AGP to PCI-e bridge chip. It should give you the feeling of having an AGP card in that system. =D
“A transformer having knocked up a Gundam” funny shit I’ve heard on this channel
AKCHUALLY, the gundam/mobile suit would be knocking up the transformer, as the average mobile suit is about twice the height
That one had me rolling
LGR: I found a pyramid. I'm making it into a computer.
All of us: ok.
This seems to be a fantastic option, didn't know that PCI cards could be passed through that way. Must try it sometime!
LGR
I was think they probably could but I’m not one to mess with VM and that sort of stuff. I would definitely be interested in seeing a follow up to this though.
Beat me to it! I was gonna suggest that.
I was refreshing UA-cam until I found something to watch then BAM new LGR. NOICE.
2020 is sure has depleted our UA-cam "to watch" lists.

Welcome to the world of Linux Gaming. I Was using Lutris and Proton for the last few years without the need to use windows.
Lutris and Proton have changed Linux gaming and it's awesome that we are now seeing Linux native ports of some Windows and Mac games.
Can Linux run the Windows Entertainment Pack natively? I know it can via DOSBox (note: do not run DOXBox in a virtual machine unless the programs don't have or need mouse support. The pointer'll go crazy).
@@Chaos89P I belive lutris and proton are a compatibility layer running the windows games so they should handle that sort of thing for you.
@@CAMSLAYER13 They're 16 bit programs. If the Linux distro is 64-bit... Linux isn't like Windows much...
