Upgrading the Pentium III Bear PC with a more bearable GPU

- Graphics performance on the LGR Bear-A-Byte computer was unbearable, it really needed a GPU upgrade. Or a GPU at all for that matter! So say goodbye to the integrated SIS chipset and hello to the Diamond Stealth III S540 video card from 1999. It's still a 500MHz Windows Me system but this has to be an improvement, right?

Only YOU can upgrade your 90's PC.
You wouldn't download a bear.
just saw this with 0 likes a sec ago
Oh boy.
Also, careful cable management will prevent 9 out of 10 PC fires.
That bear needs a campaign hat so badly. Not that lame-ass rapper hat.
That brief outdoor shot was super comfy. Glad to see the bear PC again, too!
Would love a video of that on his 2th channel , and maybe a PC nearby or something.
Oh yes, I would love more of that
So lush and green.
Was half expecting a "woods and bear" joke...
It's easy to forget that the east coast is a temperate jungle
The sheer power of Bear was enough to twist the frame.
It had so much TORQUE 😂
About the Viewsonic that stopped working. A lot of new old stock monitors have problems where the neckboard is contacting a foam pad on the back of the plastic cover. This accumulates moisture and causes corrosion on the RF shielding of the neckboard. If you open the monitor and carefully remove the neckboard then spray the socket to the tube down with some contact cleaner then Deoxit that may alleviate the issue.
if LGR made an 8-hour detailed tour on the storage, i would watch it.
Dammit, now I want it lol
8 hours is just the UA-cam shorts version of it.
Same
Heck yeah!
I'm gonna watch it uninterrupted
The way Clint says it, it almost sounds like friends and neighbors keep breaking into his house to put silly things on his Bear PC XD
That bear's style gives it +100 charisma and intelligence stats
dude YOURE EVERYWHERE! ARE YOU SOME SPYWARE??
He definitely needs a gold chain to be added to the wonderful outfit he’s acquired
It'd dangle over the disc drives unfortunately. D=
With a Flava Flave clock?
just pin the chain round the sides and attach the pendant to the bottom face @@blunderingfool - normal prop life
I was thinking bandolier.
Bro needs to spit some bars too
This is still one of the most interesting PC's I've ever seen with such a wholesome backstory for it's existence. this really is the best kind of artisan work to see even if this is probably one of the goofiest PC's to exist
It's also really interesting to see how you prep for an event.
Glad to hear, as I plan on including a bit more of the before-the-show process in my eventual video about VCFMW later this month :)
yes that's great I think a lot of us would like to see what goes into it@@LGR
@@LGR I actually came here to say just this - I love this pre-show setup/prep content and a little bit of a sneak peek 'behind the curtain', can't wait to see the MCFMW video!
@@LGR 14:21 almost sounds you're about to get a blue screen of death.
One of these days we need to meet up in person so I can give you bear hug and thank you for being most perfect human who’d do justice to, and give a loving home to my unbearably cute case mod!
Here’s hoping paths one day cross, sir 👍
@@LGR I wish there was a dog version of this.
It can BEARLY run games before the upgrade
Your comment is unbearable!
Paw erpoint
You made a ..... "Bo Bo"... eh eh? Lol😊
Yeah, i remeber could play Mafia in window. the other things worked fine
As can be said, its performance was a bear...
A non-computer aside but I'm always so envious whenever you show your back yard wilderness. People in my neighborhood keep cutting down shade trees either to make it easier to do renovations on their houses or just because they don't want the hassle of raking leaves. I'm like the only person actually /adding/ trees to his property (though they're barely saplings at the moment).
Same. Trees are cool.
That shade really does help on those really hot days. My aunt and her husband are currently in the process of getting *more* of their trees cut down.
When I was a kid we called the neighbor "The Tree Nazi" because he cut down every tree on the property and started cutting down our apple tree.
I hate cleaning the trees' mess with a passion, but I actually want more of them around. We need them so much, yet a lot of people seem to think they're just ornamental.
Leaf litter is a minor tradeoff for all the good trees do.
Meanwhile the trees around me are getting forcibly cut down because of the invasive chinese species (spotted lanternfly) coming over and destroying the environment. Had these trees all my life living here, feels so disturbingly bare without them.
Neighbor didn't want to cut down one of his side trees; part of it fell on his house a week later.
Awesome seeing the Bearputer get the love it deserves. Also, you have an incredible view from that window!
That view out your window must have been a selling point because it's really nice.
Very much so, I was seeking a place of seclusion when buying this
This version of Liero is amazing, a distant relative and I spent a whole summer vacation playing it, day after day, made special themed maps for it and such, played around with the setting. It's a crazy fun time when you crank up the blood to 500% and the reload time to 0 and spam any weapon just for the fun of it :) The only problem is that digging in the dirt is not straight forward and can only be done on a keyboard because of the weird controls.
Liero is pretty much the epitome of a 2-player keyboard game. Cramping around a single board to play against each other back in the day, ahh good times indeed!
It’s still such an amazing game too. I also have fond memories of randomising weapons to be just the most destructive ones possible (banana bombs, big nuke, etc) and setting reload to 0. You’d end up with no terrain left on the map within a minute or less and the ground just became a death zone. Good times!
That and C-Dogs was a mainstay for my group of friends in high school.
Yes, Liero was (and remains) incredibly fun. Me and my brother played it for several years, pretty much up until we were both adults. We still do a game sometimes when we meet (we're both about 40 now). I'd say it's easily my favorite game you can play against a friend on a single PC and even on a single keyboard.
And here's some trivia: "Liero" means "earthworm" in Finnish!
Omg I forgot all about Liero lol😂
So exciting - I can't bear to watch!
Fur real though
Regarding audio, that chip really isn't as bad as you'd expect. C-Media actually supported it all the way through to Windows 7 officially, and I believe the drivers still work on Windows 10 (maybe even 11!) - it got to the point that you can even buy PCI-E versions of the same chip which just have a PCI-E to PCI bridge chip on them...
Anyway, what I was going to say is that it looks like you were using a newer WDM driver - all WDM audio drivers support SoundBlaster emulation and General MIDI support, which is actually provided by Microsoft, hence it working on all WDM drivers!
BUT, there are VxD drivers for this card which provide SoundBlaster emulation and even some (from memory) awful AdLib support. You might find these better than the generic Microsoft SoundBlaster emulation.
There's even a DOS TSR to provide SoundBlaster and AdLib support under DOS.
that bear has the ultimate drip now and i love it
Its..... savage
I love the Bearabyte PC so much. The fact that this personal object of affection is able to be shared with the world, as well as being taken care of decades later, just makes me feel so good.
For extra floofiness, vacuum the fur first using a carpet/upholstery attachment, then use a metal pin pet groom for medium dogs, to gently brush and fluff up the fur. It really makes one heck of a difference. Try going in short strokes, trying to not scratch the backing too much. If you feel unsure, run it backwards so it does not grip but rather combs through.
Due to its age and generally, some fibers will come out. This is normal, as not every fiber is firmly attached to the backing.
Thank you for the reminder of VFC comming up! I would of missed it. Will be a pleasure to meet you again, and see all the cool stuff everyone always brings. Drive safe and see you soon.
Heck yeah, I'll see you there!
Dang. So sad about the ViewSonic, absolutely lovely looking thing. Also lost a brand new in box Proview CRT monitor back in 2021 literally after 8 months of usage, the flyback just died for no apparent reason and was pretty much unsalvageable
Ugh, that sucks! I do wonder what caused mine to fail, flyback or otherwise. Definitely holding onto it until I can find someone who can help out that's more knowledgeable/skilled with CRTs than I am.
@@LGR Might be time to give Adrian from Adrian's Digital Basement a call! He's done a bunch of CRT repairs
@@amirpourghoureiyan1637 At worse someone could stuff a brand new Chinese TV motherboard in it so you had a large ultra low dot pitch TV for consoles.
Man, Liero was everywhere back in the day in Finland, definitely one of if not the most recognizable Finnish DOS games. Played it a ton with my brothers at home, and it was installed on every PC at my elementary and middle schools, hah!
If you already haven't, I definitely suggest checking out Wings and Mine Bombers, the other two classics that we spent hundreds of hours on!
It's cool to see that liaro was played by so many people outside from finland somehow, liaro, mine bombers and wings were the games that we played with my friends in end of 90's with crappy prebuilds, Wish I still had my awful Packard Bell multimedia pc!
I'm from Puerto Rico and used to play it back then. Amazing game, so much fun
Nice to see Liero, my bro and i definitely played a lot of that back in the day, too. Like many of the old goodies, it seems to have an open source port for modern OSs as well
my friend had Liero on his old DOS PC, no idea how he had it, no Internet access or anything. we were a big fan of Worms though, so this was a good substitute when we were at his house. crazy game. Chiquita Bomb was nuts!
OMG, Liero and the S540 in the same video?
Holy moly! I thought that either were really rare in their day when I had that gpu and played it. Great to see you show them both off in the same video.
I'm really hopeful that the work I'm doing with my therapist works, and before the end of 2024 I'll be able get over my social anxiety issues and finally get to a convention. It's been a dream of mine for years to meet some of my favorite creators, and you're definitely #1 on my list. That would be so awesome!!!
the wallpaper choice is incredible
Bear upgrade and storage room showcase, great episode
It's crazy how old PCs and new PCs are both so different yet so similar at the same time.
I can’t BEAR waiting for another video on the Bear PC. I’d love to see more
Hi Clint. Thanks for this cool bear video ! Some weird idea for a PC case, but I like it ! Before, you could bearily play Need for Speed with it and now it's way better :)
It was a pretty bear bones build that could bearly play any games, but it’s much more bearable with this new graphics card!
I remember throwing a similar 32MB PCI card into a 500MHz Celery I had as a kid. The difference over the integrated graphics was incredible.
I like this style of video, it's neat to follow you around the place, so much to see around your place!
It was great to meet you at VCF Midwest! Thanks for your great content!
Thanks! And likewise, I had a great weekend hanging out
That outdoor shot! I thought I was watching a movie for a moment
I had to paws for a moment.
Then I remembered you refurbished this with your bear hands.
I hope the retro computer convention isn't too fur away.
I was just wondering when we would get a new video. Good to see you.
What an awesome helpful upgrade so glad your bringing that to the show such a unique thing
Looks like our friend Mr Big Pc Bear is getting a upgrade for the retro pc gaming action. This is going to be fun for sure 😎💪🏻🐻
Man that Windows ME startup jingle is so nostalgic for me, our first family PC I got to use had ME and I remember sneaking to the living room to play games on saturday mornings before morning cartoons started and before my parents woke up. Sometimes I forgot to turn down the volume and that jingle just blasted the whole house lol.
Good old SiS, probably the kings of putting out broken, barely functioning silicon in the 90s!
Definitely needs an array of Bear-related games for shows. =)
Bro lives in an absolutely glorious environment wow
The Bear PC has to coolest case I've seen in a while.
Ayyy I was wondering if we'd see the bear again, great stuff Clint
Love the behind the scene parts of this video!
Can't wait to see you next week at VCF!
You could almost say that Unreal performance was....
*puts on shades
Unbearable
Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaah
Looking forward to seeing this and you my first time going (and vending). Looks to be a beary fun time for sure! I'll have all kinds of goodies at my booth if you get a chance to walk the floor (including monitors, voodoos, and an mu100R)
Your view at the start is incredible
Good stuff as useal Clint ,keep up the good work.🙂
i just saw that video on the bear pc and you just upload a new vid on that 😂
Cant wait to see the vcf content 😊
Awe! He's looking great!
Your collection is impressive.
My gosh, the view from that window is so pretty.
Love the cablemanagment inside the PIII 😁
[rain rains with much raininess] that is some quality subtitle work right there 👌
I love how loud those old LG CD-RW drives are, I've had several. My Optiplex GL+ 5100 has the same 48x16x48x drive that the late 90s family computer had.
Good luck at the show, I know that massive bear will turn heads lol. I hope we get to see him regularly somehow. Must be so nerve wracking taking all that old-school tech on the road, because if that stuff breaks, that's it...not that you needed the reminder :\
I so wish I knew more about PC's back then, I probably would have had a lot more fun if I had, but either way, I still have a ton of good memories based on whatever knowledge I did have. Thanks once again for taking me on a trip down memory lane...good times.
I love how you put da bears from the snl reference
I clearly remember when I got Unreal Tournament as a Christmas present but it ran like crap on my PC. Almost unplayable and I was really bummed out. I had to wait until my birthday 9 months later when I got a video card (the ONLY thing I wished for) to run it properly. That feeling still makes me feel all warm inside 😊
I can *bearly* wait to see you and the Bear PC at VCFMW 🐻
Damn clint, what a nice outdoor you have
Always nice to see LGR grin and bear it when he has technical issues.
That storage room is a thing of beauty.
Great seeing Need For Speed III Hot Pursuit! I used to play it all the time over at my friend’s place on his Pentium. Gotta dig it out!
Happy to see the bear computer back.
I think you should consider recording storms and uploading them to a side channel like blerbs cause that opening shot was really cozy.
Phil's Computer Lab has some drivers for that C-Media card that may make it work a bit better.
I actually quite like the CMI8738, but I tend to use them in more modern systems, so I haven't messed with the DOS compatibility.
What beautiful rain. I could sit in that doorway listening for hours.
Looking forward to giving that bear a firm handshake at VCFMW. Oh, and say hi to you as well.
Said this before, but someone should seriously try this concept again
I had the S3 Savage 4, this brings back some great memories :)
I'm sure the bear case is great for the thermals of the computer. We wouldn't want the components to get cold. Might cause the games to freeze up.
Holy crap that storage room is insane
Got this graphics card for Christmas in 1998 or 1999. It was one of the only cards of this caliber that didn’t need an AGP slot, got quite a few games to run on my slapped together PC with a Pentium I 233Mhz.
I loved Liero! Nice to see it getting some love!
14:11 LOL that was in surround sound on my surround sound system here.
must be using a very nice microphone and hardware.
Freakin' awesome! I can't wait to experience the Bear-a-Byte!!!
That outdoor shot was icing on the cake. shefs kiss
I CANT WAIT TO SEE THIS BEAR AT VCFMW
9:25 when the neighbour gets out the hedge trimmer at 7am LMAO
Well, at least the machine has gone from terrible to bearable! Have fun at the show, Clint. And remember, do not feed the bear!
I had one of those Stealth S540s back in the day. That's about how I remember UT running. Everything else seemed to run okay. I think eventually I replaced it with a Voodoo Banshee.
Not gonna lie Clint. Thats a cracking veiw out your window mate!
I'm a 39 yo dude, and today I learned about Viero! Definitely going to give this a try, good luck at the con!
3:48 [laugh of slight defeat] lol The closed captioning on yer vids is always enjoyable.
Big joy to get a look at the Storage Room and just get flashbanged by all that old tech in there. I am not sure if there's a video dedicated to it yet but if not, I'd love to see it!
Not yet! I've been wanting to get it more organized before doing a video, but at this point maybe I should just do it regardless. Perfect being the enemy of good and all, heh
@@LGR looking forward to it!
I am so excited to meet you, the bear, and the odd ware tower in a week!!!
hot dang that's some primeval forest you got there!
Can’t wait to see the bear PC in-the-fur next week 🙃
i love the bear-a-byte pf so much
I love that this PC is getting the attention it deserves.
Thanks for bearing with my bad puns...
I bet people are gonna start adding teddy bears, ponies and all kinds of soft things to their PCs now 😂
Immediately recognised thr Stealth III from the index picture, as I have fond memories from that card. Good old times 😍
