This is one of the rare cases where the cover overshadow the original.
Pet Shop Boys made this song their own and created this masterpiece!

The old man's last line "You went away. It should make me feel better. But I don't know how I'm going to get through." is actually a quote from the Pet Shop Boys hit 'What Have I Done to Deserve This' (feat. Dusty Springfield).

That's how you do a new version of a classic song, you make it in your own style and create a new classic, just the way Elvis did. This version was a homage to Elvis, it was made in 1987, 10 years after Elvis passed.
I like this party disco version when I want to listen to a happy energetic song. Elvis version is a MASTERPIECE though.

Neil is 70 today and still doing fantastic new stuff. The last album is beautiful. The clip makes no much sense because it's like a trailer for their movie "it couldn't happen here".

Seph - The "old guy" is the late great Joss Ackland. And the video is montage from the PSB film "It couldn't happen here". A Surreal journey from nothing to fame and all the trappings along the way. Directed by Jack Bond, who spoke with the boys about their lives and he poured elements of their lives scattered across the surrealism backdrop.

One of the PSB's best. The video was a montage from the Pet Shop Boys' movie, It Couldn't Happen Here. The priest was one of the characters in the film. They were massive at the time. This version of Always On My Mind was Christmas No 1 in 1987.

See, when Elvis sings it you believe him and you feel like he's singing this song directly to you. And when they sings it, it sounds poppy and rhythmic, beautiful, but without soul.

Ooooooo me some Pet Shop Boys! That music comes in and I'm right away energized/happy. His voice is so pretty. It's so damn catchy and boppy while the lyrics are sad. Yeah, the approach they took in this cover is so different to the original and always put a grin on my face.

Pet Shop Boys have a distinct sound. This is a very nice rendition Seph, up beat party song. I played their music a lot back then. However, if I want to hear the king of music sing it in his uniquely beautiful, emotional and powerful way, then Elvis it is. Both are enjoyable. 👍🎶🎧

This is my favorite cover ever. I like the Elvis version, but I prefer this version to be honest, probably because it was the first version I heard. The music video is from their surreal music film "It Couldn't Happen Here" from 1988. The old man is played by British actor Joss Ackland (1928-2023). At the end of the song when he says "You went away. It should make me feel better. But I don't know how I'm going to get through". That's from another Pet Shop Boys song, "What Have I Done to Deserve This?" a duet with Dusty Springfield that was released earlier in 1987, the same year as this song.

  • @micmarkno
    @micmarkno 28 днів тому

the video wasn't shot for the single, it is edited from PSB's film "It Couldn't Happen Here" which is and based on the music from their first two studio albums "Please" and "Actually".
The film was initially conceived as a one-hour video based on "Actually", but then developed into a surreal feature film, with a running time of approx. 86 minutes

People will scoff but this is regarded by many as the greatest cover of all time because it completely different to the original unlike most covers,
The song came about because they were asked to do an Elvis song for an Elvis tribute show and it was so well received they were pursued to release it and it actually gave them the coveted 1997 UK Christmas number 1.
The video is made up from clips from their own film called "it couldn't happen here" which is named after another awesome album tracks from the album Actually. The album that has Kings Cross on it!!
Oh and the actor is Joss Ackland, known for being the baddie in Lethal Weapon 2 among other things!

Elvis did not use artificial voice effects and all or most of them are being used in this recording. Elvis didn't need those, and it has been said that adding pitch correction to Elvis's voice would destroy it. Anyway, I do like the sound of this. It's good. It's quirky and funny and I like it. But I would never say people using all these sound effects and voice improvements are as good as Elvis. I just wonder what they'd sound like without all the embellishment. So many of later singers lack talent and cover it up with electronic devices and flashiness.

The music by itself may be good, but this happy, upbeat and cheery version does not go with the lyrics in this song at all. It's a break up song about regrets and lost love. I like the Pet Chop Boys, but not this one, just because of the dissonance between the tune and the meaning of the song.
And to title this video with "better than Elvis" in bold later is just a bit tasteless quite frankly.
