This is what happens when you mix a soul singer with rock. Steve Perry in his prime was a absolute beast. He can illicit emotions from the coldest of hearts. Steve Perry is top 5 ever to do it.
That is the difference between then and now. No effects, no half dressed women, no twerking, Steve Perry is live, as is the entire band. This is how it was. Those effects did not exsist at this time. You made your way by pure talent. What you heard on a record, you heard in person. This was rock and roll.
I can understand you are from a different generation, but this is one of the greatest rock voices of ALL time! It always surprises me when there are people out there that never heard of Steve Perry!
I'm 60 years old now and the greatest concerts I've ever been to have been the four times that I witnessed Journey. By the end of every show Steve Perry was a complete sweat soaked hero. He NEVER missed a note. Not once! What you heard on the radio is what he delivered. You left each concert truly believing that he gave everything he had in the tank
It still blows my mind that this band never won a Grammy. They should have at least 10, these new artist that receive Grammys like candy 🍭 don't realize how hard the competition was back then. So many bands, so much great music 🎶
His voice is so soothing. When you hear him on the radio, you immediately know his voice bc of his uniqueness. The new frontman, I have to give credit where it’s due. But Steve Perry fans can always tell the difference.
TRUTH!! My teen years was in the 80's..all genres of music was incredible..it didn't matter if you listened to rock, metal, pop, hip-hop, dance, soft rock, new wave, all of it was such a blast to listen to on the radio..the garbage that's currently on the air waves cannot compare to what we listened to with 80's music...I love my 80's music!!!! ❤❤
You forgot to add in the 60's too. Great, great music then too. A crack in time: 60's, 70's and 80's (maybe due to a Christian revival in those decades? There was one later in the 1700's into the early 1800's and I wonder if there was great, great music that was made then too?)
Love the reaction when people realize singers used to really sing without autotune. And then they hear Steve Perry or Freddie Mercury or Robert Plant, live, and can't believe there was a time all of this greatness actually existed! Because music today is dog food! I was at that concert tour, saw it in Columbia SC. He was wearing the same thing. They were absolutely flawless and it was one of the greatest experiences of my life!

One word describes this performance PERFECTION!!!! Steve made Journey with his powerful smooth voice. One of the greatest voices of all time. I can listen to this all day.
Agreed. Steve has said many times that it was the most difficult Journey song to sing. And Steve Smith said it was his favorite drumming performance on the album.
There really is something special about Steve Perry's energy onstage, and you can feel it within the first seconds of hearing his voice, but it's only really communicated when you SEE him sing. I don't know how to describe it other than that it feels like he's just... manifesting connection with everyone there. He's here to see everyone enjoy themselves, and he loves it, and knows how good he is at it, but it comes across as almost... humble, for lack of a better word. The man's voice is a gift, and every line he sings says "This is for you. This is for us."
He once said he was only that good because of the fans. He said he would 'go and get' that best part of him when the audience showed up. He said that without them, he didn't have it. That's super humble and sweet!
“Wow” is about the only way to describe this performance. I saw them on this tour when they came through Chicago. Best Concert Ever ♥️ and Yes Everyone was on their feet screaming. Steve Perry was known as "The Voice". He had amazing energy didn't he! Don't Stop Believing along with Bohemian Rhapsody were inducted into the Library of Congress this year. Well deserved honor for both!
Spent my teen years in the 80's, so I remember when the song was originally released. One of my favorites and your reaction was pretty much mine. Live performances are always the best since, with a live audience, the performers have more emotion and react to the audience.

Bless you Salvo....I'm a 65 yr old man from UK.....It brings tears to my eyes too. God bless mate.
America had tremendous influence from many Bands from the UK during the 70's and 80's. Glad you enjoyed some American bands too.
Mother Father-1981- definitely agree that’s must watch vocals. ❤️🎶❤️
Steve Perry was known as "The Voice". He had amazing energy didn't he! Don't Stop Believing along with Bohemian Rhapsody were inducted into the Library of Congress this year. Well deserved honor for both!
You know a band are good when their live versions eclipse the studio tracks.
Back in those days you HAD to be able to sing live. They did not have autocorrect at all. This is pure talent and the reason they were so popular.
Spent my teen years in the 80's, so I remember when the song was originally released. One of my favorites and your reaction was pretty much mine. Live performances are always the best since, with a live audience, the performers have more emotion and react to the audience.
Saw them live in 79 and 82 and Steve is renowned for his countertenor vocal range and the same live as recorded, just phenomenal...Dubbed "The Voice". In the Top “100 Greatest Singers of All Time”. The whole concert is amazing...U really need to hear their song "Mother Father"...U do get those emotions specially when u see them live...Thanx for the memories, Great reaction
