+Mike Han ha ha ha, yes! It wouldn't work at all on some lazy, dreamy, cats I have known. Actually, I think people have tried that on cats and been very disappointed or frustrated on what the cat did (or rather not did).
Thanks, nice video. My great great grandfather was Lakota. My grandfather taught me much. I knapped arrowheads, built bows and arrows, speared and fished and trapped since a small boy. I built a wikiup in northern vermont, usa on a beaver lake in the 1980's. I lived in it most of the winter while trapping. For insulation, I put a plastic tarp over the framework, covered with some hemlock bows. I then purchased 5 bales of straw from a nearby farmer. I fluffed the straw over the entire shelter. It was more than 2 feet thick. I then put a plastic sheet over the top which came to a coule feet above the ground. I then covered with more hemlock bows and then brush and leaves. The walls were abour 4 feet thick when finished. I built an igloo type entrance with sheep skin doors at each end. A gas lantern kept it so warm that even when the temp was -20 some nights I didn't need a jacket. Every year, more leaves would cover it and it blended in perfectly with the surroundings. This wikiup lasted me 6 years, until the land was sold. Who knows, it may still be there as it just looked like part of the hill.
LOL That dog is killing me, I can't stop laughing at it, and now to see it chew a tree right out of the ground, that's brilliant .. a bushcrafting dog. #SuperRevRob
Oh my God he felled a sapling! hahahahaha. That took a lot of work no joke, well done good perseverance Lilly, you're a shelter building machine; impressive.
Stumbled across one of your older videos. This was awesome to watch. The great thing about you taking your dad's dog, Dax, with you on your trips is that he lives on in your videos. ;) I laughed so hard when he uprooted that tree while you were trying to cut the other one down! Good dog, good dog!
Another great video and so much work. Dax is wonderful. I love that we got to see some snow on the ground in your beautiful country. Great sense of humour Lilly -- Keep them coming please. very enjoyable.
Good job on the shelter. I am sure you are aware that more material is needed to block all daylight coming through the shelter. These shelters are very time consuming and much materials needed, so I respect the amount of work you put into it. It really depends on the type of environment and weather, on how much debris is needed on the outside. I live in Alberta, Canada where temperatures can dip to -30 all the way to -60 Celsius. I would need minimum 2 feet thick of debris around my shelter in those conditions.
Not really on the 2 feet. Just a nice tarp & fire inside :). Of course more insulation won't hurt but spent some nice nights in my yukon tent before I loaned it & got it back rotten. At home cutting spruce is fine city did you know? I try not cutting anything live I don't actually need. People often cut black spruce or tamarac not even thinking they are several hundred years old. No for me some fall down, tarp in a tipi will do.
Lilly, My quickest shelter from scratch, is based upon the Plains Lakota sweatlodge frame of willow saplings, butt ends dug into the ground in a circle, then bent and tied in place. Unlike a sweatlodge, I use plastic tarps to cover it, (to shed the P.N.W. rain) rather than the traditional Bison hides or wool blankets. Once done with frame and cover, I dig a "trench" of about 2' depth, (saving the excavated dirt for later) and wide enough for a "bed". Then outside, I heat up rocks, to be placed in the trench, and covered with the saved dirt or sand. This is the base for whatever bedding that I have on hand, (I favor wool "trappers blankets" or a bedroll). Makes for a quick, snug, trappers camp, when I'm traveling light on the move through back country in the American west, or Alaska.
Did I say at any time that dogs don't do that? But why would you ask such a question here and why would you write it in this amazingly weird way? You sir, are a creep.
Thanks for the terrific video. Hey, Lilly, this old Grandpa compliments your sense of humor and your ladyship, for giving all us guys great expectations, then leaving us with anticipation.
Shovels, axes, ropes aren't really necessary you can do just as much with sticks and stones I know this because I do it several days a month but she's Really good done a great job and shouldn't be criticized for it but complimented
some of the comments on this are just stupid at least this girl is out there making shelters and practicing her skills and filming these videos WHAT HAVE YOU DONE LATELY ? keep up the awesome work lily
More than anything I enjoy watching your dog , Nothing makes a dog happier than running and playing in nature , I bet you have to bathe him after every episode :)
hey ,if anyone else wants to discover debris survival shelter try Mahorrla Protect Ownlife Method (just google it )? Your dog is the best ! He or she has a great personality , always waging a tale and rolling around like a pig in mud ! Hilarious !!! Very beautiful piece of land you have there. I'd be out in the woods too if I had that to grow up on. Beautiful !
I don't know why you bothered taking an axe and folding saw, your dog seemed to be doing a pretty good job felling saplings for you. Just think, I had a dog that wouldn't even fetch a stick I threw, and you've got one that's trained as a lumberjack. P.S. ALWAYS carry spare batteries. :D
folding saw for cutting green limbs without damaging the tree, and an axe for making pegs, knocking dead branches off your main poles, etc. both have uses and both are incredibly useful for shelter making. thats why she bothered, hope this answers your question.
+JOHN E BOB cave entrances are only one of the forms of stone age shelter used. a structure like this would also have been covered with pelts to make a very waterproof, well insulated shelter for entire family units.
I had no idea that Austria is such a beautiful country, had such an awesome dog, or such an educated and fine looking woman that likes to get outside and actually do something resourceful. The U.S. is beautiful and there are some awesome dogs here too, but the women here are nothing like Lilly. : (
Why do you feel the need for women in your area to be like her? How would that affect you as a person? ***** If you're coming under snow conditions or it's just getting dark and you're looking for shelter, you can bed down on the ground with only leaves covering you as long as the leaves come from top of the decayed ones. Pile them up high and quickly under the limbs of evergreen trees and against the trunk and borough deep under them from the trunk side. Always enter and exit at the trunk. The snow will provide insulation. For me as soon as I get comfortable I have the urge to pee. lol
beta11554 The greatest tools a person can have are his hands period. What is a knife or an Axe without the hands to wield it. Lilly, great Job demonstrating in the vid!
beta11554 Survival in bad or when serious weather is approaching etc ,needs fast reactions and fast shelters to build/find/improvise, not things like this. It was a good video but I would not have labeled it survival. One should expend as little energy as needed do these things unless you know you are getting rescued or self rescue is imminent JMHO based on being involved in S and R and several survival situations, including both finding shelter and water in a hurry. But as she says, she always carried these tools with her and that is smart and I do to when I'm in the wilds.
Bush Camping Tools Hi, as your name says, it's camping not survival. You bring anything you want or think you will need. And I agree with you, FAST reactions. Not walking around looking for that nice piece of wood to burn. Night is coming on and it's raining. Shelter comes first, in my experience and just my opinion. Cheers
Nice video! I know the natives who lived in my area of Wisconsin made shelters like this. They may have used hides to cover them in addition to needle leaf tree branches.

Good work. Similar concept to the bough tents used by the itinerant Irish in days gone by. I found one in some woods in Derbyshire a few years ago that had been made from bent pvc pipe, and covered with bin bags, old raincoats and bits of old tents - not what you could call 'primitive', but certainly sourced from that idea. I found out later in the day that it had been erected by a local homeless lad, proof that human ingenuity will always provide shelter in extraneous circumstances. Excellent video.

put a camera on that dog and give it a channel of its own

30 seconds into the video... Wow, that dog is amazing!
Does you dog ever roll in dead stinky stuff and then come back to you all stinky and happy?

It's normal behavior for a dog to roll in dead carcasses.
