3:05 The Aussie salute, otherwise known as the Barcoo salute (named after the region around Barcoo River, Queensland, is the gesture commonly deployed all across Australia to deter bush flies (Musca vetustissima from the human face.
The movement responds to the fly found in Australia, the bush fly.
The Musca vetustissima is attracted to such fluids as saliva, tears and sweat,[5] resulting in them often hovering around human faces.
With things such as cork hats popularized to help keep off the fly, the gesture can be spotted across the country, not just in regional areas.
The gesture is so common in Australia, it can be commonly seen in media.
Such illustrations of the gesture colloquially referred to as the "Aussie salute" include UA-cam videos, national television, and online publications.

Yellow jackets are attracted to many things, including:
    Food
Yellow jackets are drawn to sugary liquids, meats, fruit, vegetables, and more. They can be found around grills, patio dining areas, and outdoor picnics. In late summer and fall, when food is scarce, they may also scavenge for other food sources, which can lead to conflicts with humans.
    Smells
Yellow jackets are attracted to sweet smells, such as those from flowers, soda, and juice. They are also drawn to floral-scented perfumes and aftershave lotions.
    Colors
Yellow jackets are attracted to both bright and dark clothing.
    Open spaces
Yellow jackets are often found around open cans of garbage and open cups and cans of soda.

I second the Thermacell, for mosquitoes. I haven't ever used it for anything else. You have to give it a few minutes to warm up, and place it a little up wind.
I didn't know that they still made the citronella coils. I remember my parents buying them at the drive-in concession stand and burning them to keep the bugs away. There was no A/C in the car so all the windows were down. I was just a little bit waaay back then.

Vanilla works as a natural deterrent....just dab a bit behind your ears and on your neck. You can add a few drops to baby oil so it sticks better. My east Texas cousin told me about this years ago and has been my go to ever since....😊

Here in East Tennessee what I do I put out a fan in my back yard Oasis,😊 because mosquitoes cannot handle that kind of air current. It seems to work now sweat bees I'll have to give me a little bit more time on the sweat bees. So yeah that would not be suggestion would be having a fan out there blowing on y'all ain't nothing nicer than I have a breeze man-made or God made.

Love camping, hate bugs. I use the Thermacell rechargeable repellers. I have one by the rv door, one on my folding camp table and one inside my little 6ft Quick Set Clam shelter. I also have that rechargeable bug zapper I hang on a garden hook by the door of my Clam. I have a tiny one for inside the rv just in case one of the wee buggers gets inside. My back up is an old fashioned fly swatter. When I walk my dog early in the morning when the no-seeums are rising out of the grass, I wear socks and long pants. I have a light weight safari hat with fly netting . I’m the person you want to sit next to, the bugs choose me first.

One thing you were worried about roundup last week. I worry about anything I inhale or breath thru or put on my skin. Especially on amazon or ebay so many knockoffs. Who knows what chemicals they put in things that burn or say a filter you breath through. Its hard and cost more but most of those items I try to buy in the U.S made. I know parts come from china, that are made here. I am trying to drop the odds of getting dangerous stuff. I don't even buy car oil filters on amazon or ebay because need my car to function properly not taking a chance.

    Hi Kevin, another great Video.
In Salt Lake we Have mosquitos and yellow Jackets. The yellow jackets will put there nests along the eves of your house. I get the spray that shoots 20 feet.
They also stay in the railing around my porch. I use the gray tape on the bottom of every upright to keep them out of there. Thankfully we don't have gnats or fleas. I use Avons Skin so soft. It works
Great for the mosquitos. Enjoyed seeing the woof pack, Love them. You are so blessed with your furbabies.

Kevin, I’m on the TN-GA border, right off I-75. The bugs are awful. I use Cutter outdoor fogger to clear the area. Then I fire up two Thermacell tiki torches and I have two more tabletop units if I need them. I also have the regular tiki torches for the perimeter grilling area and I use the citronella oil in them. Each of the thermacell units costs approximately $5 to burn for 4 hours. It’s cheaper if you buy the large multi-packs. I just stock up over winter and accept the fact I’m going to spend $10 a day to remain bug free. It’s worth the cost!❤TN Nana

We bought the Pic® coils some 40 years ago. In Alaska we left the light on in the front of the RV with a coil burning all night. Had to clean off everything in the morning cause it was covered with dead bugs.

Mosquitoes have just started in Wisconsin & we're 6" above our normal rainfall. So it's a cloud of skeeters that attack when you step outside. Bug zapper helps but is not perfect. I also use those sticky tapes that unroll & hang, I use tacks to hold the top & bottom to the trees or house. It's a battle.

A high-velocity fan aimed at you will keep the bugs off of you. I have regular run-of-the-mill ceiling fans over the covered patio that keep skeeters and flies at bay.

Yes those green tip matches are the worst! We use a charcoal grill and these were such a pain to light.

I've heard that you can toss a few rosemary sprigs onto your fire pit and the smell of burning rosemary will keep the bugs away.

It seems there's nowhere to go on this Earth where you can be free from biting/stinging bugs and yet still be in a warm climate. 😔

Broken Skeeter coil ? ... a couple of galvanized roofing nails (with a large head) turned upside down in the clay pot will hold the broken coil off the bottom of the pot.

Thank you for the video regarding biting bugs. When I lived in Charleston, SC, they were bad. Especially the no see ums. When my children were young and playing sports some parents would bring dryer sheets and Skin so Soft a product made by Avon. It was oily and the bugs stuck to it before they could bite. Everyone smelled like Skin so Soft. 😂 I use the green coils that you showed in the video. I think the same company makes these long green sticks that you stick in the ground.

Hey Kevin, thanks for some ideas for our patio. Our son in law is putting in a nice hot tub...so we are going to need some flying bug repellent since we will spend more time out there. Have a blessed day. LUCRETIA 🎉
