What I find absolutely appalling is how people used to say stuff like “Sakurai looks unwell, he deserves to rest” but those sentiments were lost as the fan base **became(edit) more and more filled with young people. Sakurai DESERVES, more than anyone, to have whatever character he wants in. I can’t imagine anything more motivating for him than putting in a character he really likes. If he’s not getting a well deserved vacation, at least give him his damned character. Smh.

Indeed, many people forgot that higher ups at nintendo called the shots on the DLC. And they hate on Sakurai. SMH. Guy has a work ethic that even most of the Japanese would probably consider unhealthy. And he makes the most of each DLC character Nintendo tells him and his team to make.

I know that. I'm not hating on Sakurai, but I do have a reason on why people are hating on him. 1. The people at Nintendo said that they will introduce character from series that aren't in smash, even though they added him/her. 2. Sakurai has made a huge impact on the smash community, he started the game, but he wasn't the highest rank in Nintendo so he couldn't control the characters, but people didn't know.

The Ruby Gemstone TRG, it makes sense as to why Waluigi should be a playable fighter because Banjo Koozie was a collectible spirt like Waluigi, but yet he became a playable DLC fighter.

I bought the challenger pack so I didn’t have a choice on buying him. We are upset for not having a third party character. If they wanted to add him so badly, they could’ve just made a challenger pack with series that are already in the game. It’ll be good for the FE fans, and Nintendo will get more money.

I was a little dissapointed at first but when he said there were more new characters coming I didn't really mind and tbh three houses is an amazing game.

Exactly my thought! Neutral about the decision, it's just DLC after all. Doesn't change the already amazing roster the game has. That stage + music is gonna be great for sure, + Byleth appears to have fun mechanics
Kirby only has a handful of identifiable characters. Most of the villains are eldrich abominations of some sort. I suppose Galacta Knight could be added but that feels a bit a Meta Knight clone.
Kirby doesn’t really have the characters for a large roster. Maybe bandana Dee but he would be such an underwhelming character compared to Terry and even Byleth that it’s just not good for DLC
@Tsukiko Yukiji I think Dedede and Sonic were the key factors of Subspace. Kirby was just intentional. I do re call Sakurai saying Palutena and Bayonetta would've had the highest chance to escape since their incredibly OP outside of Smash.
Byleth being included didn’t really get me, but then I got three houses and god damn I love that game I’m like half way through it and I’m glad Byleth is in smash.

I don't agree with people wanting Sakurai fired, but the past couple games have gotten 2-3 Fire Emblem characters while Zelda & Kirby haven't't gotten any since Brawl and F-Zero hasn't gotten any... ever. Chrono It’s not only a matter of the characters being Fire Emblem, but the big issue is even if they play somewhat different, it’s all so genetically created. Lemme explain because that isn’t worded best. If you look at Corrin’s moveset, of course he is very different from the other FE characters. However, it’s such an uninspired moveset that doesn’t offer anything crazily different about him. Doesn’t matter that his smash attacks are part of his dragon form if it still feels like something that could easily be done with the same sword. If they wanted to make a Fire Emblem character that people wouldn’t complain about as much, they could’ve made maybe a character that uses an axe instead, or a lance, or maybe a transforming character. You may start to go in the direction that “Byleth isn’t just a sword character, he’s has the 3 other weapons!” but when you think about it, it was the most uninspired way to make him “unique.” In the game, Byleth is not capable of using those weapons. That’s issue #1 because it’s just representing him in a nonsensical fashion. Even if he could use them though, the way they did it just feels like they wanted to mash together different weapons so that people wouldn’t say he’s just another sword character.

But Myrrh and her transforming manakete class in this game, although it would be weird as fuck to see, still, I'd be down to play her a lot due to the character and the class that was sick in FE8, I just really don't see them being able to pull it off, would just not be natural to me. Though, seeing an axe user in this game would be way more on the "normal" spectrum compared to a Manakete, since Axes / Swords are already in the game, it just seems more natural, to say the least. And I mean, Lyn's already in it "somewhat", so why not bring our boy Hector in!!
I actually got a good laugh out of Byleth’s reveal since it was inevitable for him to be added. But at the same time it’s pretty sad seeing all the hate that erupted, which was to be expected.
Matthew Murphy I’m pretty sure that Mario and Pokemon have a lot more representation in Smash than Fire Emblem. Also Fire Emblem is one of Nintendo’s longest running and successful franchises.

The voice actor for Byleth tweeted about how he was so happy to be in smash and that i was a dream come true for him. Some of the awful things people said in response, is just disgusting. Some people should not be on the internet.
Honestly though, he should’ve seen it coming. It would’ve been like if someone came and was like “I feel honored to have made the decision to cut the Pokémon dex in half in swsh”. I could never hate a character. They spent a lot of time to make their moveset, design, music and stage. Sure, I might not like every character, but I can appreciate the time and effort they put into them.

The hate stems from the fact this is the first first-party DLC, another Fire Emblem character and most importantly, Byleth being a primary addition. If you're confused, Corrin was a bonus on top of Bayonetta. She was originally intended to be the only character added to the final Sm4sh DLC, but instead Sakurai wanted Corrin as well. If Byleth was a bonus like Corrin, there wouldn't be nearly as much hate. Byleth just hit so many points at the same time that even non-haters dislike them. I don't dislike the moveset at all, but they were definitely not a good choice to end the DLC with, especially since expectations were high thanks to how godly every choice prior was. Really, I find it strange Sakurai doesn't like a whole lot of video games. You'd think he'd consider Kid Icarus since he revived it, but instead chose Fire Emblem again. I find that weird. I don't mind him having some biases to cloud which DLC he adds, but you'd think that he enjoys more video games than just Fire Emblem. I will play Byleth and have fun, but it's just a letdown that the character hit so many negative points at the same time.

Even if it was Geno, Danta, etc. I still wouldn't care, but I wouldn't be vocal about it since I know they were demanded. I never get my hopes up for them, so don't assume that either. My whole statement here is that it's weird Sakurai has the authority to throw his own bias into the game, but instead of Kirby or Kid Icarus, games he made and revived, respectively, he chose Fire Emblem again, despite how successful the game is, and that bothers me. He shouldn't be afraid to use other choices. The whole point of why he chose Fire Emblem for Melee was because he liked them, not because they were popular or to advertise a game. He almost added Takamaru as a fighter, but now he doesn't trust his bias anymore. In other words, Fire Emblem may just be a bias he leans toward in fear that any other one will get him hated, even though that's far from true. Also, I said I'd have fun with the character. If I had gotten my hopes up, I would've boycotted the game altogether, but that's clearly not the case here.

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn were the peak of the classic games, for what overseas players got anyway; Awakening set such a high standard for the series it wasn't canned and The Three Houses did exceptionally well, with many Fire Emblem fans being nothing but grateful for it. Fates was a slippery slope due to the removal of some content and some dialogue being rewritten and Shadows of Valentia is just a solid remake of the second game. People know it's good. *We just have eight of these characters now.* People are bothered because more well recognized franchises don't get as much love, such as Zelda or Kirby. Even if the majority are clones, it really does feel like Sakurai doesn't enjoy other video games himself. And for that matter regarding clones, if he can add so many Fire Emblem clones, how come he couldn't just do the same with other characters, such as Shadow to base over Sonic and so on. People just want to even get their character in the game. They don't mind how it's there. People are raving over Cuphead and he's just a Mii Costume. I'll stay cemented toward what I think because Sakurai already succeeded in making Fire Emblem well recognized. By this point, it'd be very weird for anyone to say he _doesn't_ have a bias toward it. Marth is the most cloned character in the game. I mean, come on. I'm not a hater of the series, but there's definitely a bias. And I already said multiple times now I will enjoy playing as the character. But, to make me upset, I'd need to see another Marth clone. Think about that for a second. Eight Fire Emblem reps, but three of them are Marth with different properties and slight move variation. With all this Fire Emblem recognition, you'd think they'd localize the NES and SNES games by now. They should have plenty of money to do that. I would love to try them out officially on the NSO and I could even play them through netplay so somebody can watch and help me out if I get stuck, due to how much more challenging the older games are.

Personally, even if it's a fire emblem character, I'm really happy that it's not JUST a sword fighter, corrin surprised a lot of people with his/her conventional moveset and now byleth push it at his/her paroxysm! I also think that we should be happy that Sakurai wants to add 6 more characters to the game, this means 6 more chances to have the character you want, I am sure at 1000% that they're not going to add an another fire emblem character with the current events

Sakurai is the game director. With out a doubt he has one of the largest amounts of influence on what DLC characters gets in. Only the President of Nintendo could override him and some how I doubt the president is getting involved in a franchise that has been beyond successful thus far and with the Director who headed it from the start.

He added cloud, the most requested final fantasy character and Bayonetta, the smash ballot winner. He brings every single character back to ultimate which he said was impossible in the past believing that’s what players wanted. Adds freaking Ridley and K Rool, fans been wanting them for decades. AND Simon Belmont and Chrom since fans complained about him not being playable in smash 4. Chrom comes in and people complain that he’s a Marth and Lucina clone with Ike’s shitty up B. Remember when Sakurai brought back literally every single Smash character ever? Remember when he gave us Ridley, even though he was too big? 2 Belmonts after decades of no Castlevania representation? K.Rool AND Banjo in the same game? Smash Ultimate took over the game awards with the announcement of Joker from Persona 5, and schooled the masses on the Neo Geo with the addition of Terry. We even got something we didn’t know we wanted with the Piranha Plant! Despite all this, Masahiro “Never-Ask-Me-For-Anything-Ever-Again” Sakurai is still on board, and we STILL have 6 more characters to look forward to!!! Smash Bros Ultimate is like achieving Nirvana, in the form of a video game. But fuck Sakurai, none of that means anything anymore, because we’d prefer that he just spitefully shun the Fire Emblem fanbase. (Even though they’ve been demonstrably some of the most loyal fans ever.)
I really feel like there's a lot of bandwagon hate and overreaction. You can be dissapointed but still be mature about it. I was bummed but honestly think the character will be fun. I understand critique but toxic whining is a waste of time.
Like I get being mad that there are 8 fire emblem characters now, but byleth has a completely different move set than anyone else and people are still mad about “another anime sword boy”, even though the majority of his attacks aren’t even with a sword

Eh, Pokemon does have a lot...I really hope we don't get more. Even still, Pokemon is like 20x bigger than Fire Emblem, while Fire Emblem is still a smaller franchise compared to other Nintendo IPs so it's odd for the franchise to get such heavy representation.

I didn't like Byleth's reveal, but I'm still interested in trying to play them. They're at least unique, and I can respect that. They're not an echo, and that's a plus in my book lol
I would personally rather see axe, spear, bow, and magic wielders in smash. Dedede's hammer and the Belmont's whips were very fun to use and I'd like to see other weapons and styles implemented into smash bros. I'm still excited to see how this character will turn out though and I will likely still get them because new characters are fun and I enjoy trying different playstyles.

You made alot of valid points with this review. As a FE fan and someone who understands the frustration of having one franchise dem to flood the game maybe they should have introduced someone else first and then included byleth as a part of the "other 6." I wouldn't mind doing podcasts with gamers like you in the community to discuss the ethics of gaming companies and things like what drives them, the validity, and working conditions of developers.

Honestly, this argument is right. The night after Byleth was revealed, I finally decided to try Three Houses. It’s okay to be mad, but there is some merit to the decision that the Smash devs made.
Funny for me it's the other way around. I wanted to try Three Houses (never played FE) but the announcement somehow made me sick of FE. I don't want to hate FE but for some reason I do.

Kirby only has a handful of identifiable characters. Most of the villains are eldrich abominations of some sort. I suppose Galacta Knight could be added but that feels a bit a Meta Knight clone.
Kirby doesn’t really have the characters for a large roster. Maybe bandana Dee but he would be such an underwhelming character compared to Terry and even Byleth that it’s just not good for DLC

I don't agree with people wanting Sakurai fired, but the past couple games have gotten 2-3 Fire Emblem characters while Zelda & Kirby haven't't gotten any since Brawl and F-Zero hasn't gotten any... ever. I agree with you, but you should realize that this has been an ongoing complaint and is now just culminating in Byleth since a lot of people are fed up with it.

Chrono It’s not only a matter of the characters being Fire Emblem, but the big issue is even if they play somewhat different, it’s all so genetically created.
Lemme explain because that isn’t worded best.
If you look at Corrin’s moveset, of course he is very different from the other FE characters. However, it’s such an uninspired moveset that doesn’t offer anything crazily different about him. Doesn’t matter that his smash attacks are part of his dragon form if it still feels like something that could easily be done with the same sword.
If they wanted to make a Fire Emblem character that people wouldn’t complain about as much, they could’ve made maybe a character that uses an axe instead, or a lance, or maybe a transforming character.
You may start to go in the direction that “Byleth isn’t just a sword character, he’s has the 3 other weapons!” but when you think about it, it was the most uninspired way to make him “unique.”
In the game, Byleth is not capable of using those weapons. That’s issue #1 because it’s just representing him in a nonsensical fashion. Even if he could use them though, the way they did it just feels like they wanted to mash together different weapons so that people wouldn’t say he’s just another sword character.

I actually got a good laugh out of Byleth’s reveal since it was inevitable for him to be added.
But at the same time it’s pretty sad seeing all the hate that erupted, which was to be expected.

The hate stems from the fact this is the first first-party DLC, another Fire Emblem character and most importantly, Byleth being a primary addition. If you're confused, Corrin was a bonus on top of Bayonetta. She was originally intended to be the only character added to the final Sm4sh DLC, but instead Sakurai wanted Corrin as well.
If Byleth was a bonus like Corrin, there wouldn't be nearly as much hate. Byleth just hit so many points at the same time that even non-haters dislike them. I don't dislike the moveset at all, but they were definitely not a good choice to end the DLC with, especially since expectations were high thanks to how godly every choice prior was.
Really, I find it strange Sakurai doesn't like a whole lot of video games. You'd think he'd consider Kid Icarus since he revived it, but instead chose Fire Emblem again. I find that weird. I don't mind him having some biases to cloud which DLC he adds, but you'd think that he enjoys more video games than just Fire Emblem.
I will play Byleth and have fun, but it's just a letdown that the character hit so many negative points at the same time.

I never get my hopes up for them, so don't assume that either. My whole statement here is that it's weird Sakurai has the authority to throw his own bias into the game, but instead of Kirby or Kid Icarus, games he made and revived, respectively, he chose Fire Emblem again, despite how successful the game is, and that bothers me. He shouldn't be afraid to use other choices. The whole point of why he chose Fire Emblem for Melee was because he liked them, not because they were popular or to advertise a game. He almost added Takamaru as a fighter, but now he doesn't trust his bias anymore. In other words, Fire Emblem may just be a bias he leans toward in fear that any other one will get him hated, even though that's far from true.
Also, I said I'd have fun with the character. If I had gotten my hopes up, I would've boycotted the game altogether, but that's clearly not the case here.

I personally think there is more behind it than bias. You see all those comments people make towards him for FE, especially Twitter? If he would say something about it on twitter no one would really notice it or just plain ignore it. This way he forced the smash community to listen to him whether they liked it or not, and if they dont, that's their fault. I think it's moreso Sakurai saying "look, they can be unique" rather than "FE is good" (which it undoubtedly is).

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn were the peak of the classic games, for what overseas players got anyway; Awakening set such a high standard for the series it wasn't canned and The Three Houses did exceptionally well, with many Fire Emblem fans being nothing but grateful for it. Fates was a slippery slope due to the removal of some content and some dialogue being rewritten and Shadows of Valentia is just a solid remake of the second game.
People know it's good. *We just have eight of these characters now.* People are bothered because more well recognized franchises don't get as much love, such as Zelda or Kirby. Even if the majority are clones, it really does feel like Sakurai doesn't enjoy other video games himself. And for that matter regarding clones, if he can add so many Fire Emblem clones, how come he couldn't just do the same with other characters, such as Shadow to base over Sonic and so on. People just want to even get their character in the game. They don't mind how it's there. People are raving over Cuphead and he's just a Mii Costume.
I'll stay cemented toward what I think because Sakurai already succeeded in making Fire Emblem well recognized. By this point, it'd be very weird for anyone to say he _doesn't_ have a bias toward it. Marth is the most cloned character in the game. I mean, come on. I'm not a hater of the series, but there's definitely a bias.
And I already said multiple times now I will enjoy playing as the character. But, to make me upset, I'd need to see another Marth clone. Think about that for a second. Eight Fire Emblem reps, but three of them are Marth with different properties and slight move variation.
With all this Fire Emblem recognition, you'd think they'd localize the NES and SNES games by now. They should have plenty of money to do that. I would love to try them out officially on the NSO and I could even play them through netplay so somebody can watch and help me out if I get stuck, due to how much more challenging the older games are.

K.Rool AND Banjo in the same game? Smash Ultimate took over the game awards with the announcement of Joker from Persona 5, and schooled the masses on the Neo Geo with the addition of Terry. We even got something we didn’t know we wanted with the Piranha Plant! Despite all this, Masahiro “Never-Ask-Me-For-Anything-Ever-Again” Sakurai is still on board, and we STILL have 6 more characters to look forward to!!!

Eh, Pokemon does have a lot...I really hope we don't get more. Even still, Pokemon is like 20x bigger than Fire Emblem, while Fire Emblem is still a smaller franchise compared to other Nintendo IPs so it's odd for the franchise to get such heavy representation.
Difference is pokemon look unique from each other and all have a vastly different move set

I would personally rather see axe, spear, bow, and magic wielders in smash. Dedede's hammer and the Belmont's whips were very fun to use and I'd like to see other weapons and styles implemented into smash bros.
I'm still excited to see how this character will turn out though and I will likely still get them because new characters are fun and I enjoy trying different playstyles.

Lol seems about right. People were mad about corrin, gave a collective “who?” to Terry, and pissed about a plant. People are always fine the second the character is released and find out they’re fun to play.
@@samundef3500 Corrin and Terry didn't get the same type of reaction, and neither did Plant Gang. Terry wasn't well known by most, but it was obvious how much Sakurai loves the games/characters. Plant was a meme, but everyone memed it in a pretty positive way, it also wasn't a main pass fighter, just an extra.

You made alot of valid points with this review. As a FE fan and someone who understands the frustration of having one franchise dem to flood the game maybe they should have introduced someone else first and then included byleth as a part of the "other 6." I wouldn't mind doing podcasts with gamers like you in the community to discuss the ethics of gaming companies and things like what drives them, the validity, and working conditions of developers.

Yeah it makes them seem like hypocrites. Sakurai put in characters they have been begging for YEARS for, but it still doesn’t satisfy them. I’m personally happy Byleth got in smash. I’m not a FE fan but the stages and music selection are so otherworldly, i love the stages firstly since they look similar to something that a Zelda game would have.

Even this is stupid. They had already announced the 2nd fighter pass before, so it's NOT the last slot. And why would people expect them to finish this pass with a big reveal, when it has never been the case in the past ?
Yeah, that bad part was the build up. No announcements for more than 130 days plus its the final fighter in the pack, so people expect something big. I really don't think it is all too bad though.
Honestly, this argument is right. The night after Byleth was revealed, I finally decided to try Three Houses. It’s okay to be mad, but there is some merit to the decision that the Smash devs made.
