This was so much with friends back in the day. All the different matches and missions and unlocks was so fantastic. Even just watching the exhibition movies of the fighters going through their moves.
I spent so much time playing Soulcalibur to unlock all the artworks. And as a kung fu practitioner, I’m always happy to see these staff, sword, and spear moves recreated so faithfully. Truly one of the best fighting games ever. Makes me want to buy Soulcalibur 6
I love unlocking content behind artwork and I'm surprised looking back no other game has done this. Not onlt was it satisfying as hell but the variety of images and description reallt built the world. It is almost sad to think that 25 years on, games like this may never be topped!
Smooth polygons and low res textures. That Dreamcast flavor. I think I played this one back in the day since I definitely recognize the "the legend will never die" but I think it was on PS1? Is this the one with the intro song that goes something like "we all need to shine on, to see, how far weve come on the journey" while those epic plastic-looking 3d cutscebe models swung around? Also, Soul Caliber remains one of the few fighters I care about because of its commitment to world maps and other RPGish elements.
The series started out on PS1 so you'll recognise the characters there for sure, that PS1 game was great too! This does have an amazing intro with all the low poly dudes vibing but it doesn't have that song. But now I really want to find whatever game it is that does have that as it sounds like my jam! Yea I'm the same there. I do like fighting games in general, but the little RPG and lore touches on Soulcalibur really put it up on top 😊
@DreamcastEnjoyer oh yeah here it is. Still a banger intro The 3d models didn't age as terribly as I expected and the song, though cheesy, gets me pumped for something epic. Lots of shots of what appears to be story beats which sets up the expectation of a bit more lore and narrative than your typical Street Fighter or something. Basically an anime intro. So apparently it was Soul Edge/Blade that I played back in the day alongside Battle Arena Toshinden 3. Great times with a now deceased pal. I could honestly just watch the enbu demonstrations and exhibition matches all day and I'd be happy!
A defining game of the dreamcast. Sort of glad it wasn't ported to the other consoles after the dreamcast died. Those animations are superb.

this sort of 2.5d gameplay suited the dc dpad perfect. It wasn't even overhyped. This and MvsC2 were two of the best fighting games ever.

I totally agree! It's nice that games these days do art books and stuff but the way Soulcalibur built it into the main game was fantastic
