  • In 1999, Namco released one of the most impressive arcade ports yet seen in gaming. It just so happened to be on Dreamcast.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Soul Edge(PS1) and SoulCalibur(DC) captured on real hardware.
    2. Arcade SoulCalibur captured from MAME.
    3. There have now been 6 mainline SoulCalibur games as well as numerous spinoffs.
    4. Namco was involved in only 3 more DC games after SoulCalibur.
    Ms. Pac-Man Maze Madness (2000)
    Mr. Driller (2000)
    Namco Museum (2000)
    5. An Xbox 360 Live Arcade version showed up in 2008, but it's missing some of the features of this version.
    6. I had always thought that if SoulCalibur 2 was released on the DC, Joe Musashi from Shinobi would have been Sega's character.
    7. Sega advertised and distributed SoulCalibur in Europe.
    8. This is one of the better games for the DC visually. I've read that each frame is made up of 30,000 polygons and there are 60fps. All things considered, it really showed the DC had the oomph to do some great next generation visuals.
    9. I've seen the arcade SoulCalibur in the wild once in my life. It really was rare in my area.
    10. You may notice that all these battles are set to 1 round for the win. I did this so I could capture gameplay for all the fighters. I beat SoulCalibur 17 times for the 2 hours I captured footage.
    11. The sound section features two different songs. The first you hear is "The Cursed Image" and the second is "Unblessed Soul".

I miss those days, Soul Calibur was such an amazing game packed to the gills with content on the Dreamcast. It was better than the arcade in all forms, and it was a system seller. I loved the Dreamcast, such a happy period in my memories of gaming, when it died, a part of the gaming industry died too. Sega left the hardware business and gaming just hasn't been the same since.

Aye, I got mine Christmas of that year. My best friend got one at launch though, and it was my time on his Dreamcast that sold me on it entirely. I wanted one and when I got it, I was so happy. @@JohnDoe-wq5eu I do agree, aside from Valkyria Chronicles, Yakuza, and the Genny collections, I feel they just don't have the same staying power with their games like they once did. The Sonic games have taken a massive nosedive in terms of quality, mainly from being pushed out way too early with game breaking bugs. Sonic '06 is a prime example of this, fans have since been working on ironing it out. Same with Sonic Unleashed. Both were developed for the wrong generation of systems I feel and both had too short of a development cycle.

Soul Calibur's music also has a unique sound. Many of the tracks sound like Marches in their percussion. Most other games would only tap into that for a "military" moment (and usually watered down and boring). But Soul Calibur has every flavor of a March, and has a wide range of unexpected melodies on top of that percusion. You hear that blend and immediately think, "Soul Calibur."
Not many games have that distinct a sound that's all its own.

The graphics absolutely blew me away at the time, and the weapon combat was really cool. This is one of my favourite fighters, even if fight fans will say it lacks depth or something. I still go back and play it often. And it's still awesome.

    • @Astfgl
      @Astfgl 3 роки тому +5

I always take that "lack of depth" criticism with a grain of salt. Soul Calibur's gameplay has plenty of depth to it, but it isn't as overly complicated as modern fighting games are. It just means Soul Calibur is more approachable for the casual fighting game fan, whereas a lot of fighting games these days are targeted squarely at die-hard fighting enthusiasts who don't mind spending hours memorizing all the frame data of every move. Personally I don't find that a lot of fun, and it's one of the reasons why I have fallen out of love with the fighting game genre over the years.

Even at that point at Age 13, I had somehow never seen the arcade game, and I had no awareness of exactly what Caliber was other than a fighting game. I somehow brought this game home with no awareness of how good it was actually going to be, I just remember saying to my Dad in the car, "Here's another game I'm gonna kick your butt in!" and then we went home and popped in the disc and I'm pretty sure our jaws both dropped to the ground at the graphics

Soul Calibur is a textbook example of a 10/10 game. There is absolutely nothing that this game can be faulted for. Graphics technology, art design, animation, gameplay, sound effects and music all come together in a package that is as close to perfection as you can possibly get. This game blew me away as a kid and it still looks and feels amazing to this day; it has aged very gracefully. Most of its many sequels are fine games in themselves, but none of them can hold a candle to the majesty of this one perfect moment in time.

I remember seeing Dreamcast games for the first time on a video in Electronics Boutique. My best friend and I at the time were buying games for our PlayStations. When that video came on we were absolutely mesmerized by it. We both believed and argued with the cashier that everything we saw was pure FMV. There was no way in Hell games looked like that on a home console. Back in mid '98 you would be hard pressed to find arcade cabs worthy of that picture. He preordered his Dreamcast right then and there while I did my preordering at Toy's R US (he got the last one, bastard). ;)
The day the Dreamcast dropped I had to work a double shift and I missed picking it up. My best friend and now roommate got his however. The very first game I saw running on his Dreamcast was Soul Caliber and I was completely floored. The 6th generation was the greatest leap in graphical fidelity we had ever witnessed before and it stood the test of time for a very longtime.
At any rate, that next morning (I didn't even go to bed) I picked up my Dreamcast with Soul Caliber, House of The Dead 2, and Sonic Adventure. While he had NFL2K, Soul Caliber, and I want to say Hydro Thunder. That night we threw a huge house party with both Dreamcasts running at the same time. We had Soul Caliber tournaments running all night long in our livingroom. What a time to be out on your own and a gamer. Too this very day we still throw huge get togethers solely for the love of gaming.
Addendum- The 6th generation was the greatest leap in graphical fidelity we had ever witnessed before and it stood the test of time for a very longtime. This leap was so profound that it took three generations of gaming to finally surpass it. For a long time I thought the days of great improvements by leaps and bounds to be largely behind us. Thankfully, that isn't the case, the 9th generation has become a return to form for both Microsoft and Sony. Seeing games running in 4K@60FPS HDR10 w/Ray Tracing on is simply breathing and reminds me of the time I fist laid eyes on the Sega Dreamcast....long may the game industry live.

Soul Calibur was THE game to own if you were a Dreamcast owner.
    Late 1999....
we've played it a lot at a classmate's house after homework.
What an experience...we've also organized a full tournament with all the classmates.
I still remember the first time I saw it: I still can feel the goose bumps I experienced on that afternoon!
Then, we talked with all classmates about the console and, in occasion to the birthday of my friend, all of them came at his house to play the game, where each one was waiting for his turn with both eyes shocked!
That was a huge moment, short but huge, to be a proud owner of a Sega console...great memories.
I'm really in love with the packaging/appearance of the Dreamcast games, very different from the "DVD style" games of the boxes for PS2 and X Box.
They have a very collectible feeling for me, I don't know why but that's it.

I’ve been a fan of this series since the early days of the PS1! I can remember when SOUL BLADE first came out and how it blew everyone away! Graphically and gameplay wise it was just epic! And I completely agree with your assessment on SOUL CALIBUR on the Dreamcast. It was simply a revelation in terms of a home console fighter.
I’ve always felt that Namco treated this series with a lot of time, care and class! The graphics and music have always been gorgeous! And I’m still a fan of this series to this very day.
One of my favorite games on the PS4 is SOUL CALIBUR VI. It’s a beautifully refined experience that brings the series back to its roots while also offering a lot of great new content for its players. The character creation mode is fantastic as you and your friends can make fighters completely original. It’s a lot of fun doing local battles with your buds against original characters!
Honestly...the SOUL CALIBUR series is the best 3D fighter out there in my humble opinion.

But lizard man is doing it now lol

Soul Caliber was the killer app on Dreamcast for me and I played it so much that I think I unlocked the entire game within the first couple weeks of owning it. I even took it to work with me the the first day after the Dreamcast release so everyone could play at lunch.

Amazing rivalry with this game back in the day. My buddy had it and a Dreamcast and we would go at it for match after match. Nightmare vs Siegfried. It got to the point that we just started doing SURVIVAL matches to see who could go farther as our VS matches :D

When I used to come over for meetings we would all catch in a few rounds of Soulcalibur.
    Man, those were the days....

This game blew my mind when I first saw it running on a Dreamcast. Never before had I seen an arcade port look orders of magnitude better than the arcade original. It was chock full of extras for replay value and also had one of the best musical scores ever. A masterpiece formula that I wish other companies would emulate. THIS is how you do a proper arcade port.

This was the game that sold me on a Dreamcast. The amount of content was mind-blowing for the time. One of my favorite things was the intro edit, which allowed you to change the characters shown during the intro (possible because the entire intro is rendered in real time, no FMV anywhere). Could be very amusing, especially when you replace Sophitia with Astaroth and show him standing daintily in a field :)

My copy of Soul Caliber was one of only 3 games that I had for my Dreamcast and it occupied the disk tray 90% of the time. We would sit around and play that game for hours on end over the course of several years. That 1 game alone justified my ownership of the console. That game was so amazing that years later I even got a copy of it for my PS2, and I played the living hell out of that copy too.

We knew this game was under the Christmas tree in 1999. My brother and I discreetly picked it up, undid the wrapping, removed the disc and put back the empty case, re-wrapped under the tree. We unlocked everything in under a week, playing in my brother's bedroom to avoid suspicion, then just before Christmas we sneaked back the game in its packaging and feigned surprise and excitement as we unwrapped it a second time. Good times.

I was all about the dreamcast at launch but I saw so focused on Sonic Adventure I really hadn't paid much attention to it. Picked up a copy of this on a whim a couple weeks after launch by skipping lunch at school every day and pocketing the change for a new dreamcast game, had never played the prequel or arcade version. Absolutely blown away. That was the one game that almost got a couple of my friends to not wait for the PS2 to come out (but they did anyway LOL)
