I don't like it anymore. Too much effery and being beat like a bald headed stepchild with Beckett grading. I don't trust their authentication either as I have seen multiple errors authenticating known wife signed Mays and A Dom Dimaggio they authenticated for Joe on a 41 Playball. Then, Goof Wilson paid 25K for it. Maybe cause he knows so much about "Jolly Joe DiGiammaco"? Will never buy another. For newer stuff, my stance is "Who cares"😇Have at it. That said, I have a gorgeous 51 Bowman Mantle BVG 5 with subgrades. "9" centering with no print lines, wax back and perfect registry. You just don't find this card with all these attributes very often. When I bought it, I paid PSA/SGC 3/4 prices. That was 5 years ago and you couldnt buy this card for what I paid if it was cut in half. My eyes hurt, I can't see doing anything with it but enjoying it. When I sell it, It will sell for "PSA 5 Prices" or it will rot trying. 🤣
Once a year around my birthday I send in about ten cards from my junk wax collection to Beckett to be graded with sub grades. They’re not worth anything but I enjoy trying to guess the grades of cards that I collected as a child. Having the cards graded and encased to look at every so often puts a smile on my face. Instant nostalgia! 😊
My general rule of thumb is that if the card needs to be in a PSA 10 slab for it to make sense for me to collect then it’s probably not a card that belongs in my collection. Almost like that Marie Kondō lady’s approach, does it spark joy in a BGS 2.5? Then it’s probably worth collecting 😂
It possibly makes for an interesting dilemma for PSA to see autograph cards sent to them that were previously in a Beckett slab. $250 for a Beckett slabbed auto and $400 for a PSA slabbed auto. And of this $150 markup PSA is getting only $30 for the grading service and slab? But the entire markup is due to the PSA name. That has to tick off PSA. They will figure out a way to get half that markup in the future. They push fees as far as the market will bear. I'm not a big fan of autograph authentication and grading. There are too many ways to manipulate the system, especially with high dollar cards. For the scammers, most of the time a person is only out some personal time and their grading fees for trying to pull something off that could have a fairly big profit.
As a autograph collector I am fine with Beckett auto slabs, especially when the price is much less than a PSA. Over the years I got more than my share of great Beckett auto slabs at reduced prices.
Yes, Beckett slabs are worth getting. You named several reasons already. A card I want is already protected and graded. I do pay less, but if I’m keeping it for a while I’m even happier. The slabs are tough, thick, and heavy. I agree with you about the brand. Nice cards, Mike.
I’m still up in the air about grading. I prefer PSA slabs over SGC probably due to the set registry. Lately though I’ve been using the set registry simply as a checklist. As a collector, it’s all about the card for me. I just want the card with the grade being secondary or even negligible (for example if it’s a good looking raw card). However, they will not be my cards forever. So in preparedness for my family’s own attic find Friday, I would prefer to leave them with all Gem Mint PSA 10’s because of the resale value. But who is to say that the PSA dominance will last forever? With their ever increase in pricing and in the presence of a “junk slab” era where slabbing modern cards becomes more expensive than what the card is worth, will the dominance of PSA hold. I don’t know. I guess my main goal is to be known as the old grandpa who left all of these Nolan Ryan’s (and to a lesser extent, other players) for future generations.
A graded card, from a “named” company, is a graded card. I look for PSA, SGC, or Beckett usually. I also kind of like the TAG ones. But if I can get 2 SGC = 1 PSA , it’s a no brainer???
I had a similar experience myself recently (I actually just received it Monday). I won a 1955 Topps All-American Jim Thorpe BVG 6 for about 60% of what it would be in a PSA slab. I have several of them but this one was well centered and that category always goes for a premium with vintage. I also don't like the Beckett slabs.
I prefer PSA and SGC but I have several Beckett slabs for the same reason you stated for the Betts card. I bought the “card” at a big discount. I think Beckett will ultimately survive, but not under present ownership. They are still number 4 with a long brand history. And if they don’t survive, I still have the card inside the slab!
Hi Mike, anytime you can save 50-60% for the same card in the Beckett slab, I would buy that card every time. It does not make sense to pay the PSA premium. Thanks for sharing.
Honestly, I used to love Beckett slabs because of the sub grades. Once the values began to plummet, I shied away. But for what? I’m not a seller or flipper, so I guess I just followed the crowd.
I have 1050 slabs and only one of them is Beckett. People just love PSA. I bought a CGC 10 card for 20% of what a PSA 10 card sold for. As a pure collector, I buy the card.
SGC is good. I like even the new TAG slabs. Plus, they give you a detailed report on why your card got the grade it did. Which is awesome and every grading company should do. The slabs are the nicest I've seen.
I'm fine with Beckett slabs, I have a few, as a matter of fact I just picked one up this past Sunday at the Fireside show. I got a 1993 Topps Derek Jeter RC, Beckett 8.5 for $10 a great deal I feel.
I sure hope the Beckett autos I have are good! I actually prefer the flip on their autograph slabs - sad that their resale value isn’t quite the same… but like you, I’ll worry about that down the road!
@ I don’t think the design of the Beckett flip is that good in and of itself… to me it’s just less obtrusive than PSA. the data read out/candy cane red/white PSA flip calls your (well…. *my*) attention away from the card.
people prefer PSA for the set registry and I prefer it because there are more PSA slabs out there and I to like the uniformity, but I do still respect Beckett slabs and got a mint looking BVG 8 Gretzky RC for half the price of a PSA 8
Exactly. Agree with you fully. It’s authenticated. It’s the same card but sells for way less. Common thing in this hobby nowadays. Pay an extreme premium because of a name on the flip (PSA) and not actually the card. Same card different company name. Although , a legitimate company who has been around for a long time. I would take that card all day long in a Beckett slab for the price difference. Congrats on the pickup. Thank you for sharing.
I have no issues with the in person autograph verified by Beckett. I don't think it will lose it's value, if they no longer exist as a grading company. Nice cards and a really nice price! Congratulations!
I believe PSA is propped up by uninformed purchasers, which has created the premium charge. It used to be the cheapest to get your cards graded, and along with that they have the registry. So many people just went to PSA because it has been the leader for so many years. It wasn’t that long ago when PSA didn’t sell at a premium. PSA has my least favorite slabs. In the past 3 years I have bought 4 PSA slabbed cards. Cracked two of them out. I only get cards slabbed in PSA if I intend to sell them. I prefer TAG slabs if I want a card slabbed for anything since 1989 and CGC for older cards. As a general rule, I prefer to buy raw cards. I usually only buy in slabs if I can’t find the one I want raw. Not buying any pre-1960 or high value vintage, so not much risk in what I do buy. I would definitely buy a card I want in a Beckett slab, and especially if it is cheaper than other slabs, with no raw option. Thanks for your videos!!!
I looked and didn’t see it mentioned (or hear you say it), but one of the bigger reasons Mookie’s pack pulled 2014 autos are that much more of a multiple than the IP autos, 2014 is the only year you can get the pack pulled, on-card autos from him. He has some sticker autos in random 2015 Topps products from whatever leftover stickers they had but then that’s it, no autos of any kind for Topps after 2015. The IP auto you got is fantastic and still rarer than people realize, so congrats!
Oh, as for Beckett, I find it odd that people thought they were better than PSA in say, 2014 ... but now, people that prefer PSA but, why would 2014 BGS be less than 2014 PSA if comparing apples to apples (same card)? I think you're onto something about BGS being a bargain in many instances.
The Beckett story to me is analogous to Fender guitars. Both were sold by the originators and then floundered. However, the name will always be part of the industry in some fashion.
I bought a fan made 1973 topps Roger Waters signed card for like 500 bucks that is in a Beckett holder.. I have no doubt it's a legit signature. I saw a few month back a cheap pro set signed Jimmy Page card and a signed Paul McCartney card both went for 1200. Not planning on selling it, but even tho it's a fan made card, the value is in the signature and not the card. Plus there is a video of him turning down a baseball to sign, so to have a card signed is cool, even if it is fan made. Thoughts?
