I dont get the outrage over the ginter no numbers. Theyve been around for years and i think most ginter collectors know about them. That being said, the most interesting thing about collecting modern to me is not finding shining numbered junk but having to study the cards and set info to look for subtle variations. Heritage is good for this too. Tons of variants. It makes me engage and read and appreciate every card more!
Topps wants to grow the hobby. Longtime collectors know these things, but a lot of new people bought and didn’t know. Topps should make it easier to understand.
Weird timing ! I was literally posting my Mike Trout SUPER SHORT PRINT rookie PSA 10 POP 5 STRAIGHT CUT back variation, while listening to this video part pop up I thought kind of coincidental. Keep up the good work
The A&G mini variations have been the same for years. My PC player was a rookie in 2017, and they were the same then. I recently bought another one of his rookie no number on back variation for $1. The seller didn't know, obviously. The 2nd photo showed it had no number on the back. It was listed for months before I decided to check the 2nd photo in the listing
There’s definitely a collation issue with 2024 Topps Stadium Club, in particular the blaster boxes. I didn’t get all Yankees but I did get all Mets. Every single red parallel was a met. Even the base cards seemed skewed towards teams. I got a ton of Giants and Twins from those blaster boxes as well. I didn’t notice it quite as much in the hobby box I got, but very noticeable in the blasters.
Don't think I saw in the comments, but to add about the A&G no-number minis, it has been 50 copies the last several years, similar to black border paper Heritage (non-numbered, 50 copies). A big reason Topps/Fanatics should explain it better -- beyond just because they should -- is because they no longer print odds on packs. I wish they'd bring them back, but I also wonder if it emphasizes the gambling aspect too much to kids. Regardless, Topps should have a better website presence on parallels -- they actually could market the heck out of it, with a parallels landing page for every set.
The "wood" cards are cool. There have been "wood cards" for years, now. The print runs are lower, they are different from the now standard "glossy" card and have a texture that is unique. Whenever I see someone pull a relic card, the first thing they do is touch the fabric/relic to feel the texture. It is human nature. I think that that texture being the entire "face" of the card is a big "like" for most collectors. A really popular "wood card" currently available in packs is the Heavy Lumber Insert Set from 2024 Topps. Very popular and with the right player printed on it, very valuable.
Hi Mike. I enjoyed this episode of Clearing the Bases. That 68 Topps Mays, Mantle and Killebrew auto is cool. Looking forward to watching the live steam tonight.
To find a 4-Figure Trout card for a couple of dollars at a Goodwill is luck that I never have 😢 Wood Cards have been around for awhile. I have a couple from the Topps Star Wars set. One gave me a splinter 😊
I disagree that Topps should dumb things down to cater to new collectors. They put out a sales sheet with every insert and parallel listed for every product. There are plenty of sites that list these as well (TCDB, Baseballcardpedia, etc.) The subtle parallels and variants in Allen and Ginter and Heritage are a throwback to the often overlooked errors and misprints of vintage cards and rare backs of tobacco cards. If every rare card comes with some big “congratulations! You’re a winner!” type feel then it truly is just gambling. Having interesting cards slip through the cracks is great for collectors who actually take the time to learn and enjoy the cards and are a great treat for newer collectors to learn about after they blow all their money on breaks. My entire collection is built on learning about cards that are super rare and overlooked and adding them to my collection for cheap because no one else cares and /or realizes what they are.
I agree. And, I think the hobby should be fun. In general, parallels and inserts across all sets are akin to easter eggs. A&G just happens to have some that require a bit more inspection to find the easter egg.
On another note, search for Topps's published odds sheet for Allen & Ginter 2024. I personally appreciate the creativity and thought that went into creating this particular product and how it continues to evolve every year since its inception in 2006.
Agree to add to Topps site. To sat no one uses Beckett is the furthest from the truth. I am a set builder, I open product, and every collector I personally interact with uses that site. Also most breakers will have that site up or people in the chat that are in the breaks will have it up with comments. Some will even pin that link in the chat for those looking to follow along. A lot of the blasters on release week did have 3 plus of the same team when it came to the red parallels. From a full case of blasters/40 boxes about 10 were like that.
Allen & Ginter "No number mini" was on the checklist at release. It's been around. Topps was likely posting about it for new A&G collectors to be watching out.
Enjoy the channel as always, speaking of dual autos, did you see the one with Bill Buckner & Mookie Wilson? I thought that was a pretty cool idea for a dual auto card!
I remember the year that toppe forgot to tell people that there could be a rip card inside of box lid. Only a few people knew about it and you had people say they would buy your empty boxes..
With so many inconsistencies, do you think PSA will start including grader notes in the future? Should they? Would it hurt the resubmission portion of their business? Thoughts?
All good and valid questions. I’m not convinced that PSA has done a good enough job with grader notes to roll it out more broadly. I think they should. And yes, I think it would reduce resubs so they likely won’t.
