This video was a year ago & I'm just now discovering it. Anyway, yes. Warren did publish a Vamperella book. And the story The Frost Giants Daughter was originally part of the early regular color Conan comics.

FYI: some of those Conan Saga magazines used covers from SS with different internal content.

Used to read these as a kid. My Dad had a box of them in his closet I would raid when he was at work.
Today, I collect them one at a time; some from my local comic ship, others off of Ebay.
Slowly building my collection of them.
The art was and is amazing! The writing was first class. Some of my favorite comics of all time. And even today, they are rarely surpassed or equalled.

I have so many of these now lol. I’ve been on a super collecting of all things Conan kick lately.
From the Robert Howard book, to the omnibus, to all the issues I can find at any comic book store

I love that Simon Bisley cover for the 1st issue of Conan The Savage. There was always a certain sort of Mystique for me about The Savage Sword of Conan magazine. Maybe because they were black and white, maybe because they were more violent and you got to see glimpses of nudity, or maybe it was because they were always sold on the same rack as the Heavy Metal magazines, right next to the..cultured gentleman section.

Glad to come across this video. Savage Sword was a fundamental part of what sparked my interest in both Conan and Fantasy in general. That art by some of the finest artists to ever see print; Writing far and away above what was available at the time (Strictly superior to what is available these days.)! To this day, these still come to mind whenever I think of either Conan or the genre.'
I have been methodically putting together a complete collection of every issue of Savage Sword of Conan. I'm about 77 issues short currently and closing fast. ( Mostly need mid and late-run issues.) I also now need to find those 10 issues of Conan the Savage to go with them.
These go ahead of my EPIC set and even my Heavy Metal collection. Again, thanks for showing off the magazine so well. It was far ahead of its time and has ye t to be equaled, let alone surpassed in my view.

The Savage Sword of Conan magazine #'s 16, 18 and 23 were my first introduction to Conan and REH. I bought the 3 issues glued to a cardboard backing and wrapped in plastic, for some ridiculously low price (I can't remember now how much exactly), but my whole love for Conan and REH stems from those 3 books that I bought off a corner store newstand decades ago.
I don't have the hardcover omnibus reprints that you showed here unfortunately, but I do have quite a few of the softcover trade reprints of SSOC that Dark Horse printed a few years ago. I'm surprised you didn't feature any of those on here. They are great books! I've really been enjoying your channel here Michael. Nice to see a kindred spirit.

    I totally loved SSOC.
My first issue from the newsstand was issue 64 or 65 and probably stopped around 130 when I went in the service.
I do have a lot of the DH reprints that I got about 10 years ago and I do enjoy reading them from time to time still.

I’ve been reading Fantagraphic’s large volumes of Prince Valiant lately, and it’s amazing how much I find in the art that found it’s way into Buscema’s Conan comics. That shouldn’t have been surprising since Buscema had named Foster as one of his influences.

I loved the Conan the Savage as a follow up to Savage Sword. The first issue's story reminded me of the "The 13th warrior" movie's story. The art was also one of my favorites in the B&W Conan collection.

Michael, great video and memories. I bought these all new on the stands in the 70s and 80s, lived them! The Barry Smith Art was incredible, in a par with Frank Frazetta Lancer Paperback Covers, but different. I think Barry Smith was the best Conan artist. He did an amazing b&w on “Red Nails” that I still love today, and on the color comic, “The Tower Of The Elephant “ another classic! Great stuff, fond memories. I donoknow how you can hold those big heavy omnibus volumes to read them. I like lighter smaller books myself. I very much enjoy you RE Howard videos. Have you read the Murphy book on sword and sorcery? A must read!

Alcala’s inks were the most ‘pulpish’ (pulpy?) of SS. I really liked his inking on those early years of SS. Buscema’ s inks on his own pencils were great, too.

I Love these comic mags. To be honest I loved them better than the regular color comics of Conan. I always love the addition of Solomon Kane, or Kull in the back. I don't have that issue of Savage Tales that You Showed 1st.
Ka-zar. LoL. Only Ka-zar I have is with the X-Men.
Monster Unleashed was Marvel?? Hmm. I have some from back in the day in boxes.
I was going 2 say some of times the cover had nothing 2 do with the stories inside.
I still bought back issues I came across at comics stores before the Pandemic.
I have that 1st Conan The Savage You showed. 👍 I don't have that last issue. 😥
I had 2 trick My folks, and spend the night with a friend so I could see the 1st movie. LoL. Because someone told them it had a graphic love scene in it. 🤣🤣🤣No way was I missing that movie. All the Robert E Howard books, and comics I'd read. No Way. LoL.

You make me want to run out and find not only those old b&w Conans, but some of those other old mags as well, like that Unknown Worlds of Science Fiction, which looks amazing. Great historical overview and showcasing of the Conan comics!

Savage Sword was a great comic. Although familiar with Howard's Conan stories well before, I think this magazine was my first introduction to Kull and Solomon Kane. I still like going through the stack I have; the covers, the extra artwork, articles, back-up features, everything. I even played, for a time, Hyborian War, the play-by-mail game that was almost always advertised on the back cover. A lot of great memories in that magazine (as well as Conan Saga).
