It may be way to late for you to even still care but it looks like they are using a capacitor, AA batterie and compartment, 2 popsicle sticks, copper wire, a switch, and a little glue. Sorry, I don't know what the white piece is but hopefully that helps!

The magnetic field strength is governed by the number of turns of the coil and the current. By having a high voltage and spark gap for an instantaneous moment, a very high current is flowing through the coil sending a strong magnetic pulse. To make this stronger you can add more capacitance to the dc output before the spark gap by placing a few capacitors in parallel. you could increase the spark gap distance a little bit, this would cause a pulse to occur at higher voltage which would mean a higher instantaneous current. You can increase the wire size (this would actually nonintuitively be fairly effective as it permits a lot more instantaneous current to flow without resistance) as well as increasing the number of turns of the coil.
