Awesome! Why can't they build beautiful cars like this again! I had chance to buy one like this for 7000 back in 1991"". My biggest regret in my car careers. This is a beautiful machine, The narrow rear window takes some getting used too but otherwise one of the most underrated muscle cars ever

My very favourite Mustang. A neighbor in Antigonish Nova Scotia had one of these when I was a kid. Lots of Firebirds and Mustangs around St. Francis Xavier University in the early 1970's. Great times and unforgettable cars!

@@loucostabile Why thank you. I am a former Mustang Club of America judge for 71-73 and owned 1F05M135530 about 15 years ago. That car as almost all original, right down to the 14x7 trim rings and caps. I passed on polyglas tires though as I liked to DRIVE the car. Also own 2F01F149247 a factory pink '72 coupe that's awaiting restoration. The 71 bodystyle is in a league of it's own in the Mustang canon. Take the side stripes, spoilers off a 71 mach 1, you have one clean car. Never understood all these restorers putting all the doodads on them. However, I get why BOSS 351 owners go Mag 500's almost always. The 15x7 factory wheel with rings and caps are devilshly expensive *if* you can find them. (I have a set squirreled away I bought almost 20 years ago with 2 sets of rings - one being NOS) EDIT: Actually the BOSS 351 had 3 wheel configurations. The stock 15x7 steel wheel with trim ring/center cap, 15x7 steel wheel with Deluxe wheel cover and finally, what you see on this lime green example: Mag 500s. Cheers.

I actually really like the 71-73 Mustang body style. Plus 71 was the only year you could get a 429 CJ/SCJ in a Mustang. But the 71 Boss 351 is one of my favorite Mustang's ever, only surpassed by a 65 Shelby GT350R and a 69-70 BOSS 302. The 71 Boss 351 was actually quicker than a 71 429 CJ Mustang in the quarter mile

@@loucostabile Until you get to the Thunderbird. In the early 80s, someone put it this way, "Imagine that the 57 was Rosanna Arquette and you just got married. You woke up in 58 and it was Roseanne Barr."

Pretty sure High Performance Cars magazine clocked a 71 SCJ at 13.40. That's from memory but I need to review my 1971 issues. Stock, unprepped, unmodded Boss 351s were low 14 second cars.

These were never my favorite Mustang’s. At least they were better than the Mustang II. I remember the first one I saw at the local Ford dealer. I was so disappointed. Given another 50 years, they don’t look so bad anymore.

Drives me crazy when the rear wing is at the wrong angle. As it is on this car it is actually producing lift. Look at how the Trans-Am cars had theirs. Should probably be about 5 degrees higher in the back.

Another extremely rare 1971 is the 429 SCJ. If you ordered the 429 CJ with 391 or 430 rear gears or drag pack, you received an upgrade in the engine with a different intake for the 780 Holley, solid lifter cam with stiffer valve springs, and transmission cooler. This was probably the quickest factory stock in '71. Of note; Lane Carey took one of these in the FAST (factory appearance stock tire) to a record 9.84 in the quarter mile. This was against much higher modified cars like 2/4 hemi's that still appeared stock.

So somewhere along the line someone added the Magnum 500s and the rear spoiler..... I think the '71-'73s Sportroofs look too busy with the rear deck spoiler added on, the flat rear roofline doesn't need any help IMO :-)

Great car, but the '71-'73 Mustangs weren't very well accepted. They got too big and heavy for most folks and then the emission standards in '73 killed them dead. It took a long time for Mustang to get back to a powerhouse again. Good job, Lou!

Jimbob, it's ironic 71-73s get called 'fat.' Even Lee Iococca called them a 'fat pig' at some point The real growth of the Mustang happened between 68 and 69. Between 70 and 71, the growth was like 1.5". When people say it got too big, I point out the 68 vs 69 growth. That normally shuts them up. It's just the 71 LOOKED less like a traditional Mustang and was getting more aggressive.
