This 1971 Ford Mustang BOSS 351 is quite a ride, with it’s high-compression, heavy-breathing 351 Cleveland building 330 HP horsepower and competition suspension. This one is also different in that it wears a special order color, and shows less than 900 original miles! From The Brothers Collection.

The '71 Boss Mustang was the first place I ever smoked a joint. Mt step-brother Mike sparked one, smoked half and said, "You ever smoke this, kid?" I nodded yes. He said, "Finish this..."
Bob Seger "Live Bullet" on the 8-track and fishing gear in the back, we went on to have a splendid day at the lake!

The 71 Boss 351 is definitely probably my favorite Mustang, whatta Performer with that insane Cleveland for 71. And for some reason i always liked a 68 Fastback with a 428 CJ and Top Loader 4 Speed, White with Blue Stripes just like the Shelby Mustangs, to pay tribute to the 68 Stock Eliminator Winning NHRA Winternationals Mustangs. Boy the Brothers must have paid handsomely for this car. The '71 Mustangs it has been said were really the best riding Stangs, and what a bold design. It is a shame so few of these Bosses were built, Ford should have offered an automatic version and would probably have at least doubled their production. The standard 351 Cleveland 4-Barrel in 1971 was also a high compression engine with a specific intake and heads, a sound performer, very much different than the 2V car, and really a great car to acquire.

man what an awesome car. one reason for the size increase for '71 was Bunkie Knudsen's belief that American's wanted big engines...which they did. to get the 429 into the Mustang took a bigger space between the shock towers. which, to keep it proportional, required a bigger car all around. my '70, with a big-port Cleveland, is almost impossible to get #2 and #3 plugs out...a 429 would not have fit...which is also why the 70 Mustang had a 428 while all the other BB '70 Fords were 429's. The first '71 I saw, as an 10 year old back when they were new, was a grabber green sportsroof...I was amazed at the flat rear window...thought it was the coolest thing ever. A '71, esp the Boss, would be very cool.

I love the 1971 Mustang, especially the Mach 1 and the Boss 351. Having one with that low mileage makes me wonder... Who would marry a virgin and say "Look at my virgin" 48 years later? Different world from the one I live in.

Good looking Car in my opinion, although some of my friends liked the previous generation better. It is a wonderful look back at history. I like the misaligned driver side door stripes. Quality Control was a thought back then !!

j swan I owned a 70 351 Cleveland 4 barrel Mach 1, quality control was terrible. Door gaps, fender gaps, hood gaps. Then bought a 73 Mach 1 with the same engine, it was a dream. Don't know why, but everything on the 73 was perfect. The 70 was fast, but cheaply built, after 3 years it was ready to be junked (body wise) the engine was still very fast. Your point about the driver side door stripes was right on the money. Ever notice the hoods on 69 and 70 Mustangs? None, not one ever made, matched the level of the fenders.

Had performance models from the Big 3 over the yrs, Being a Fan of all 3 CERTAIN models, But I remember all the Big 3 around 1973/74 started having there THROATS cut by the Insurance Companies, the mustang/camaro/charger Were all Huge cars with 250 to 450 Hp. with a Hemi or 454 , To Myself though Ford Had it together the Best they could like the rest of the other car company's @ the time they were sharp with the colors & stripes , But like the rest there days in the Sun were long gone & they were all Underpowered TANKS !!.. & Now there just finally appearing on the Muscle Car Radar. With that said, Can anyone Explain if INSURANCE KILLED THEM BK IN THE DAY TO THE POINT MY LEGIT 1968 CHEVY Z/28 Camaro 302 POWERD SUPPOSED TO APPEASE THE INSURANCE COMPANIES THEY RATED IT @ 290 HORSEPOWER FOR INSURANCE COMPANIES ALTHOUGH IT WAS ACTUALLY AROUND 400 HORSEPOWER, MY QUESTION IS IF THEY THE INSURANCE COMPANIES SHUT DOWN THE FUN @ THE END OF THE 1960'S TO EARLY 70'S WITH TO HIGH OF HORSEPOWER & TO MUCH POLLUTION, HOW DO THEY GET BY WITH IT TODAY IN A AWESOME TIME WERE A TEENAGE IF THEY HAVE THE COINS CAN STROLL INTO CHEVY / DODGE / OR FORD & AFTER SIGNING 2-K TIMES CAN LEAVE THE DEALERSHIP SIDE-WAYS SMOKING THE TIRES OFF ON A NOT UNCOMMON

Just interesting how it was ordered with special option paint and rear seat, sport mirror delete etc so someone specced it how they wanted it and then it was never driven. maybe the original owner passed away soon after taking possession and it was stored, who knows. I'd love to find out more about it, these cars all have such interesting stories.

He had a 2500 RPM stall converter installed and would take me off the line but I would catch him on the top end. I bought a rebuilt 400 that pulled the front end off the ground of my Bird. Got me in all kinds of trouble. He wrecked his and I had to sell mine. With I had both of them.

There is one documented 1971 boss 302 that was never released, it was re - engineered and re numbered, by Ford to a standard Mustang fastback, not even a Mach 1. The parts were made and cataloged, and even stocked, but only one car is known to be produced. I've seen 1971 boss 302 crate motors, and my days in a garage, have seen mechanics Chilton manuals with the specs...but that one cars been found and restored to its original boss 302 configuration.

I swear this is true but a friend I grew up with and went to high school with his dad was really into fords he had a 1950s custom Ford pickup hotrod with a 302 crate motor and took it to tons of car shows he also gave my friend a restored 69 Cougar with a 351 cleveland with bolt on goodies for a graduation gift in 1989 although he gave it to him at the begining of the year and the day he got it we cut school and had a lot of fun in it but anyway my friends dad had a 69 mustang convertible with a 428 CJ in a shed in his backyard with all his trophies and I swear to you this car only had a little over 100 miles on it. I cant remember the exact model of mustang it was covered with a bunch of cloth sheets so I never actually saw the car but they both told me about it but I really wish now I bugged them to show it to me, I'm pretty sure he still has the mustang but I moved to another state years ago but they dont live to far from my parents.

Believe it or not, my dad was hired by a guy to swap a BBC 454 and Muncie into a 71 Boss. He got the engine and trans in trade. He didn’t want to do it, but money was money. So he pulls the engine while the guy gets the engine and changeover kit for the engine mounts. Weeks go by and dad finally gets ahold of the guy. He says he changed his mind because the mount kit were more than he felt like paying. He wants the engine put back in. Dad says he will, but the agreement was for the engine. He’s completed half the job as he asked and expects to be paid for his time. The guy doesn’t wanna pay because he didn’t get another engine. Just put the engine back in. He doesn’t appreciate he’s asking for free work.
Eventually, they came to an agreement. Guy got a 2bbl 302 and automatic dropped into his car and dad got the Boss engine and trans

The Most Underrated Mustang of all Time. The Cleveland in the Boss 351 was actually Ford's quickest Mustang, was in that same Magazine that they Called the 70 Buick Stage 1 GS The HEMI Killer. And i Agree 100%
I rode in a 70 Stage 1 Few years ago, All Stock except Headers and Aftermarket Exhaust System, The Street Hemi was a Turd. The Race Hemi was a different story. I'm a Die Hard FORD Guy since Forever, and out of all GM Muscle Cars, i would take the Buick over the Chevelle, 442, GTO. Love the Body of the Buick. And that Buick 455 Torque was insane. Buick made the Best 455. As far as HP Ratings, 360 HP and 510 Ft lbs.
I'm sure Buick wasn't telling the truth.
