I love climbs. Not for the effort but for conquering them. Great feeling when you manage that climb that you thought was impossible.
So true! And from then on, you have no choice but to at least TRY that climb every time you're out on the that trail, even if you don't always clean it -Christina
Me too loving it and that's why I'm also into biking.
Same here!
I’m a Xc rider and can confirm that the downs are still more fun
TRUTH has been spoken hahah thank you! -Christina
im a dh rider and confirm its more fun when i can beat the steep climb technical bits of a dh trail without getting off my bike ( my local horsetrail dh and hillbilly dh are my nemesis and have such trail features )
Dopamine rush of a PR at the end of a climb is worth a thousand descents.
Am I weird for liking the flat smooth parts the most?
Christina is a perfect example, I just learn so much more when she hosts videos ☺️😉
Best mountain bike explainer probably ever.....she explains it so smoothly and then shows what she's talking about. Why can't all youtube instructional vids be this good?
Great stuff from Christina - awesome addition to the team. Let's see some with her and Mike Levy on those climbs!
Great video!
I find keeping my ass on the seat helps a lot in steep techy climbs. I just shift my seating position as far forward as I can. The rear suspension moves the rear wheel out of the way if it's tuned correctly and keeping seated also helps with rear grip. In combination with constant pedaling clipped in goes pretty far. Constant cadence is key, delivering constant force. When out of the saddle, the pedal force tend to go like a piston with spikes of force that slip out the rear wheel easily. I stand up only to deliver that last push in combination with forward jolt.
I use this technique with a 150/140mm trail bike.
Awesome info! Thank you! I try to keep myself "honest" most of the time and climb seated but sometimes.... I do have to get up and out of the saddle to punch over something. I try to save those moments for "emergencies" -Christina
@@pinkbike Yeah. Sometimes theres that last big root or rock on top the climb that you need to push with all you got! And I rorgot to mention that in order to keep the front down I lean forward when seated.
That snow shot at 2:36 - 2:40 is awesome, kudos to whoever filmed that.
I started riding full suspension bike about a year back and slowly getting lazy with climbing which erodes the skill and strength. Quickly realized that this is still mountain biking. You gotta climb to get down. Going back to doing session on climb to get it back. Great tips Christina. Keep it coming. Thanks.
haha yes, we've all been there! I find climbing with suspension tricky because you have to USE it while climbing...too lazy and you'll just be bobbing around. Have fun getting you climb on -Christina
I enjoy watching your vids. You're a fun presenter,🙂 such an upbeat attitude.
Climbing has become my workout session since I can't run anymore. Great tips!
It's the investment part of the deal. The return is the view from the top, and the descent.
I find taking a second or two on approach to relax, check position and fill my lungs helps.
I hear ya christina loud and clear...very well said and explained!!!but after conquering the steepest climb is the best experience for every bike enthusiast
Lots of good advice!
One thing that I learned and often try but didn’t see stated here: accelerating well before that extra steep/tech section to build up some spare momentum.
My local nemesis would be wet but hard & compact clay slopes. The compacting comes from foot traffic and loaded pack horses. Even aggressive tires can sometimes fail to dig in while climbing.
Aiii that sounds treacherous! Where is this I wonder? I'll make sure to stay away hahah -Christina
technical climbs are really hard to climb, especially if its rocky and roots. to myself need to go practice and ride the technical climbs a lot to be confident and avoiding getting hurt. thanks for sharing your expierience. have fun and be safe.
So useful, interesting and motivating as always, Thanks Christina!
Thanks for the dab and fails :) Nice to know it's hard for all of us. Thanks for the great videos Christina. Love seeing more women on Pink Bike.
Back wheel lifts are one of those subtle maneuvers that make a *huge* difference in what you can make it up and over.
This is going to make my climbing ten times better, great tips Christina! 🤘
Gearing is everything!! hahaha Grind it till you find it baby!!!
Great vid, Christina!
Lots of good stuff in the video, I reacon that if you went old school, got an even pedal motion with your weight in your hind stuck to the saddle, got your chin to the bars and let your feet spin effortlessly and focused on where you wanted to go rather then how step it was you would nail that climb you failed easy! Weighting into that rear suspension is like climbing with a partially deflated rear tire in the 80s. Gives you that much needed traction, just like pumping into a burm. (If that makes sense) nice job! (Also tire choice still makes a huge difference)
This is AMAZING!!
Dear Christina,
Have you been sneaking down to Oregon and watching me? Once again your lessons are spot on what I need!!! Thank you Christina! 😉
P.S. Hahahah - Yeah!!! I didn't flip over on that steep rooty turn, but in the end my bike and me were turned in just the opposite direction. I still don't know how that happened.
hahaha this is great! I don't think you are alone here :-) -Christina
Love these helpful videos! Your skills are inspiring!! Thanks very much!
It’s weird, I rode mostly cross bikes for years and LOVED technical climbs. It was when I switched over to a slack, heavy, hardtail that I soured on them.
We’ve optimized for descents so heavily that we made the climbs a nightmare.
Jump on a 20lb bike with steep geo and uphill rock gardens are total delight to me.
Great tips
Thank You Christina!
Once again a great video from Christina except one thing! We all know your trapped in BC riding in one of if not the most awesome places on the planet. The wrap at the end of the video could feature a go to place for an after ride. The Watershed, Howe Sound Brewery, The Copper Coil, and my fav, Pepe's Chophouse. Is the boarder ever going to open please.

“We made it to the top of something”😂👏
Exactly how I feel after a frustrating climb.
Have 90’-‘91 ridged MTB
On hills I’m doing I’m supposed to except my front wheel keep coming up and off the ground with every downward pedal stroke. My first thought is that I this old bike need one or two lower gears. MTB today are geared much lower.
Anyone have any tips besides buying a new bike?
As much as I hate climbing, it's just part of mountain biking. I look at it as riding dh is my reward for putting forth the effort to climb up to it.
Pinkbike have the best on camera presenters :-)
“It is fun?” That’s what I tell myself before beginning every technical descent lol 😂
My eyes ,” you got this, done it 50 times”
Me after winter ( crash ).
hopefully she will do more videos
Great info,,thanks cherss
Great tips! What about setup like locking out or firming up rear suspension*? 🤔
or do you find this does not work well in rooty / rocky climbs?
*At least for those who can adjust on the fly and for larger climbs.
lockout: long smooth climbs
"mid" compression setting: can be used on steep climbs that are moderately bumpy
fully open: if you like more traction on climbs at the expense of efficiency; use on the hardest climbs
^that's extremely oversimplified; experiment with each setting and find out which one works best for you, your bike, and your terrain
@@vivek_v thanks, that’s what I was looking for in this video was theory to backup my existing setup/technique.
Seems pretty common sense. Adding snow to list of soft suspension setups given it’s snowing out right now 📆👀
@@vivek_v "fully open: if you like more traction on climbs at the expense of efficiency"
More traction IS also more efficiency.
Efficiency is not just how little your suspension moves, it's really how much power gets down to the ground. If you go locked out or firm and your wheel skips or slips, that's super inefficient. If you go open-mode and maintain traction then it doesn't matter if there is a little bob, overall efficiency is higher because you don't have to account for losing traction.
Thanks for the share! I agree with what you said for sure! I just didn't want to dig into too many bike specifics here. They can go lost sometimes.
Loving the responses below! I totally agree. I try not to overload the vids with too much info and in this case, adding bike setup could have been that "too much"... especially because hardtails and dual-suspension bikes differ here obviously. The coil shock I have doesn't have a lockout which has been fine for climbing, I maintain good traction on the ground this way, especially in the tech terrain. However, if I had the lockout option, I would still ONLY use it for paved road riding to be honest. I prefer having traction on the ground and making sure each pedal stroke is put to use -Christina
Are those Front shocks Marzochi bomber z1 or z2, btw great video as always.
Thank you for the video great 👍 Is it ok to train everyday or better off every other day if I want to improve my endurance and climbing skills?
Seems stupid, but the most important, and first, thing I really learned about MTB climbing is that when you can't make it all the way up, then decide to stop, watch your foot hit the ground, grip the brake firmly and don't let go. The worst feeling is rolling backwards all the way down the hill. Not to mention how dangerous since it's a blind fall with back and neck at risk.
If your fork compresses too much on techy climbs your BB lowers and almost always leads to a pedal strike.
Good shout, I actually added some LSC to my fork to save a little tiny bit of energy on the front end here -Christina
@@pinkbike My GF is gonna upgrade her RS 35 fork to some sweet new squishy goodness. She's thinking Z1. How are you liking yours?? Cheers and great vids! 🤙🏻 thx!
Great to have a girl showing us how to do things. Get fed up of watching guys saying “just do it” 😂
Lol the best way to learn is definitely just experience this video just repeats common sense in an educational tone
You might also like to check out Linnea at Fluidride. And if you want pointers to guys who are more likely to say, "nope, I can't do it!", there are some of those, too. :)
Thank you, I personally get a lot of those comments when out riding with the mates. It's nice to remind ourselves we do actually know how to ride hahah sometimes we just need some space to try things a few times -Christina
....2:35 ...
Can you do Sunday saves?
this would be amazing, Saturday Sends is always a blast
Probably not enough content to justify a regular series, maybe bi-weekly or monthly
The request has been put in hahah I could watch those videos and not feel sick knowing that they save it -Christina
@@pinkbike can't wait to watch some legendary saves 🤙
Hi Christina, what about fork set up when climbing technical trails? Do you recommend locking them out completely? Or you still want a little bit of play? I have a Rockshox ( 150 mm travel ) which locks out completely after 5 clicks ( clockwise ). For me, the sweet spot is when I click it 4 times. What are your thoughts on this? Thanks
Thanks for this Nice video
Climbing up a technical section can be more rewarding than bombing down a sketchy line. Maybe not as fun in the moment, but more rewarding.
Oh yeah! you can see the frustration in my face when I don't make it hahah but I usually try a few times bc it is so rewarding you make it!! -Christina
Hi Christina! Big fan here 😍 what type of riding shoes are you wearing? Are those water proof?
just wondering whats the bottle cage on ur bike that holds ur pupm because im looking for one and cant find it anywhere online
How to climb better: ride more, climb more. Push yourself and don't quit mentally.
Technical climbs > technical DH > Flowy DH > Flat > punching myself in the face > basic XC climbs
so is christina small or is that slash massive
Both!
Maybe both? But if the bike was any smaller, I'd be over the front axle of the bike in the title pic, maybe not ideal... -Christina
@@pinkbike kind of figured, think the phrase "wagon wheels" just hit now though
Is this item coming back in stock soon?
Can someone please tell me what dabing is?
Momentarily touching your foot on the trail so you don't fall over.
Critical term in climbing hahah now you know though! Dabs = pushups in my ladies ride crew -Christina
As much as I hate to say it, riding the road bike weekly in the hills have made me a much better climber on the trails …
Where is this?
I love ur vids
Christina casually going through all this while my skinny-fat ass is getting tired thinking about climbing my local trails.
My new ebike has made climbs a non issue ! So fun , downhill all day baby
I just hate long fire road climbs and mellow stuff that goes on forever. It's so boring! Technical punches are a super fun challenge and I really enjoy them.
I love the variety! Some days I just want to spin up a road and not think too much hahah but I also LOVE a good challenge of technical climbing and when it's super rainy, I prefer to be in the forest instead of exposed on the gravel roads -Christina
@@pinkbike I'm from Louisiana too so luckily all my climbs are techy little jibs that are actually fun.
What does she mean by a “Liker Kit”?
Guilt me for all I care but I'm glad there is a piece of technology called eBike that allows me easy access to the top of a hill so I can focus on “ripping” the downhill. Honestly, I do not find this shaming or discouraging in any shape or form. There is no shame in the desire to soothe the strain of an ascend.
What gear should I be in on my single speed? 🤔
The angriest one.
@@gundamnit3594 I wanted to have a funny answer but yours is the best.
Hi pinkbike
HI! -Christina
0:04 almost cut too late
is she riding a 27.5 ?
Standing up does not work on very steep climbs. It unweights the rear tire.
Nice video but is this really "advanced climbing technique"? Thumbnail says so.
"we made it to the top of ....something" lol, that's what she said....literally!
Ebike. Easiest way
"You don't want to be easy or too hard on the gears."
Well yeah, no duh. Doesn't that always apply?
I'd bet what was meant is "Most everyone knows too hard of a gear can make a steep climb harder, but too easy of a gear can also be not good.
@@paulm9340 you're the one who just called her dumb. I just suggested a clearer way to say it. You need to give a break.
I can't possibly know what trail, terrain and gear every individual person should be in on "their" climb but it was just a reminder to not head to the hardest or easiest gear right away. Find a gear that works to your strengths. If you have quads of steel, you can probably push a slightly harder gear up a tech climb than someone like myself with super tiny legs. Sometimes we just need reminding of the basics. I even gave examples of when you might want a harder or easier gear -Christina
After the last video I grew a mustache but that didn't help. This video looks to be more useful.
spinny to winny
Lactic acid.
I hate lactic acid.
Yeah but under slope of 20% it's easy 😂
if all else fails, get an ebike 😁
Those things looks wild on tech climbs!! Sometimes going too fast? Is that a thing... -Christina
EARLY!!!
none of these trails are “tech”...... smooth ass pnw trails
Not even the hardest climbs on that trail let alone Squamish 😂
Great vid, Christina!
