@Uncle Grandpa gotta admit damnit, I'm guilty. I'm the like too haha. Your totally right tho, my poor ears but luckily haven't had and accidents or near misses... Yet. Maybe I'll keep one out 😉
Same, usually when I have a silly crash it's bc I celebrated too early and lost focus and/or starting looking at fun stuff on the side of a trail hahah like a bunny! -Christina
It's the same as being in the trees on skis or snowboard. See the spaces, not the trees. On a MTB, see the line & not what you're avoiding. Take in what you want to avoid well before you're there -- that's why you look up! -- and trust your mind's retention of that thing you'll be avoiding. Focus now on your line and trust your memory of the thing you'll avoid. Steve Jones did a great MTB instructional video for Dirt Magazine in the 00s, and one of the sections has Steve Peat (if I remember right) talking about this very idea.
I smashed into a tree this weekend. The tree was around a blind corner, corner was flat and loose.. haha I couldn't take my eyes off the tree, went straight into it 😅
@@pinkbike That counter turn was so legit Christina. It's definitely helping me in the hardpack tight fast switchbacks in socal with smaller berms. They might more intimidating at speed than anything else cause you gotta lean the bike so much lol!
It’s great having someone who can coach properly and break down these techniques into something we can practice... rather than someone who’s just super fast but can’t coach! Loving these videos 👌🏼
Really great video, you are good at this. Number one, you communicate clearly as to the technique. Number two, the slow motion action allows for a clear visual reference back to the verbal instruction. Being a beginner mountain biker in my early 60's, I can (and do) use these videos to improve, and I am improving quickly, which is exciting. I'll be watching for any video on any topic you put out. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Christina - your tutorials are the best!!! You know who your audience is, and you direct your lessons to us. You would not believe how many time your teaching came out during our 2 1/2 hour ride. On the way up a gnarly muddy trail full of roots, my buddy in front of me fell - and I followed his example. I thought about that root during the whole trip and looked forward to trying it again, someday. Well, we decided to take the same trail down and flying over that big root was not such a big deal. I told my buddy that I was going to turn around and try it again. "NO WAY!", he yelled at me as I was leaving the parking lot to go back up the trail. OHHHH - I DID IT!!! With your, Christina, instructions and encouragement, I just got up the speed and confidence, picked my line, and somehow flew up that steep muddy hill and (only losing a little muddy traction) did it!!! My buddy (a better biker than me) was right behind me and he slipped and fell again!!! Yahooooo!!! Anyway, Christina, this did make up for my earlier humiliating slow motion rolling fall down the steep brush/stick covered side when I went too wide on the icy trail and sank into a molehill, on the now named "Holey-Moley-Rolley" Trail. Thank you again Christina - NOW, I am going to watch this video again!
Like many have already said; Christina is really good at this. I often search for instructional videos because I coach novice children and I'm neither an expert rider nor an expert coach. Hers really are pretty much the best.
Christina -- I've worked with some of the best ski coaches on the planet, and your teaching skills and your ability to describe the relevant complexities in a friendly & engaging manner are among the best. I'd pay you for coaching any time.
Having your chin in-line with your stem is a great tip. I used to lean way back and wrecked fairly often through fast berms. Getting my weight forward has made a huge difference...and my front wheel hasn’t washed out once.
Christina has an amazing talent for riding as well as for teaching. I wish I could get lessons from her. I bet she could teach even this 69-year-old beginner how to ride well.
Great video - love the approach taken to explain. Particularly pointing out really specific things. Eg a lot of videos will just say “make sure to balance yourself”, this video talks about video over bar, and what will happen if you’re arms stretched and weight behind the seat, etc... Awesome.
I was trying to negotiate a steep tight corner (I’m still a relative novice) at Cwmcarn, Wales on some local made trails and ended up high siding it off the bike as I was trying to keep it upright. Tricky skill to master. At speed I’m ok, going slower my brain tries to take over. Ended up hanging from a tree 😁
OOOF!!! That sounds like it could have been great to see! I'm glad you're ok. I agree that slow and awkward corners are suer tricky! So much awkwardness to navigate haha but your time will come with practice -Christina
@@pinkbike it was pretty funny. Some steep steep stuff down there. I was on a Dialled Bikes Hot Rod (4x) so that added to the fun! Mountain biking is such an awesome sport. I really like your chilled style of coaching 😁👊🏼
Great video has given me some things to work on Q what about how to use your feet on the pedals (flats) the thing about toes & heels Had my foot come off in a really rough section Keep them coming 👍🤙
Awesome! I’d love to hear a little more about body movement pertaining to shoulders and hips. Basically more about what you were doing at 2:40ish. Really changing direction of the bike quickly.
Love seeing the positivity towards Christina! I'm definitely a fan and I love watching the content her and her team produces, its super interesting and I learn so much!
This was super helpful! The part about staying low but not dropping back over the rear while cornering helped me out. Just had a faster ride then normal thanks to better/more confident cornering. Also the "look ahead" reminder is always good. Thanks!
Thank you so much, this video finally made me hit a bunch of corners flat-out without touching the brakes. All the videos tell you to put your weight over your front wheel and I thought I did that enough. Your remark: "Chin over stem" was finally quantifying it and it made a huge difference. I'm just back from a big ride and it was a blast!
Thank you for a great lesson. I live close to a great trail (C.R.P. - NJ) with tons of challenging rocky corners and unclip a lot (just started clipless a month ago) on a lot of downhill corners. I love your take that we can all get better with practice and your helpful insight will certainly help me improve, thanks again!
Christina I just love your videos! Nice to have a strong female rider showcasing skills. Thank you for your great work and easy to understand videos. Well done!
Thanks for letting me know that I clipping and dabbing with my inside foot as allowed! Also, I think I’m getting way too far back on letting the front wheel get to loose.
Nice pieces of advice here! We never miss cornering tips 👌. Sometime it's a bit hard to lean the bike as you think it's gonna skip but maybe it's a matter of weight distribution 🤔. Great video anyway ✌
If your low to the bike, with elbows bent, when the bike skips away, you have space to extend your arms and / or legs. Try get lower on the bike. Once you've had it happen once or twice, it actually comes naturally. You always expect it to, maybe, slide some. You can see her doing it more than a nice in this video.
Amazing how good you do explain all that stuff Christina. Love your videos and your kind to explain and show. If you are ever in the near of cologne, drop me a note and I would book you for some lessons 😄🤙
Thsnx for the very helpful video. In the future would like to see an indepth look and detailed body positioning. Maybr add more graphics as majority of the learning populatiom are visual learners. Thank you.
Awesome Video Christina! I'm still a beginner and have issues staying low and forward on my bike when descending and having to brake during cornering. I under that braking should be done prior to entering the turn, but sometimes with down hill speed I'm still going a bit too fast. Not sure if I'm making any sense..... just gotta practice more!
Oh Boy! Don't mention that to the bosses. I don't love them hahah but I continuously TRY them bc sometimes I actually make it out the end...with my heart at 170bpm -Christina
Great tutorial and coaching attitude. I’d be interested in similar videos on jump techniques 101-102 . Btw, noticed you swapped to a coil on the slash. Curious for a before/after review as I believe this bikes oem shock is one of its strong point.
It would be really cool to see you analyze your line choices from the perspective of your ride. Like with a gopro helmet view that you pause and comment about what you're seeing.
I didn't understand this part at all @2:34. I don't know if the audio didn't match the clip or what, but I just couldn't figure out what you meant and it felt important... Cool video, loved the look of the forest etc.
Christina says, "Move your bike to the inside of the turn." I say it like this: "For non-bermed turns, lean the bike toward the direction you want to turn." At the same time, shift your weight to the opposite side of the bike in order to remain upright. How much you shift/lean depends on the situation. At 2:34 to 2:45 of this video, she is talking about shifting the weight, but it does not look like she is doing much weight shift. If you look carefully, you might see that both those turns are banked, which is almost the same as bermed. In that situation, the body leans to the inside of the turn, too. See @2:43.
Christina does excellent work. More vids with her, please.
