I disagree with the "technically by law" part of stopping behind another vehicle. In the UK STOP signs can only be placed at junctions with reatricted visibility (or a tram line) so despite it not explicitly saying each vehicle needs to stop you would be unable to safely ensure the road is clear to enter unless you also stopped. I think if you tried to argue on a wording technicality to a traffic officer (or a judge) you'd quickly find yourself in more trouble than you were in the first place.

Thanks. Of course if the view is restricted then yes it is necessary to stop and gain the view. I disagree that if it came to it, even in court, the wording of the Road and Traffic Act is precise. You must stop behind the line. The law does not specify how far behind the line is appropriate or not, so there is in fact a case to be argued. Clearly I'm not suggesting we should all go sailing through stop lines, however there are many junctions where the view is completely open, and stopping behind the vehicle immediately in front who is behind the line, then going, would be still be deemed safe and legal, taking into account all other reasonable expectations at that junction with regards to safety. We will have to agree to disagree on this one 😉

Most drivers in Isle of Man are illiterate STOP means, well exactly that! STOP. Solid white lines at a junction mean STOP (whether a sign is visible or not.)
In Bermuda, well, you will get called all sorts of racists names and, in my case, the driver stopped his car and assaulted me! when I stopped at a STOP junction - even when there are DOUBLE solid lines. The powers that be could make a fortune if the booked 1/2 of those driving thu a stop junction - imagine the litracy rate after that!

In America you can only go at stop signs if your at the junction first I think

We would need to see the wording of the law to know for sure 👍

Stop lines, and by extension cycling stop boxes, seem to have their own little rules when filtering past stopped traffic. Just a ‘real world’ observation outside a mod2 test scenario.

Another good video Leanna, hope you’re keeping well 😊. Got a question for you, as a learner you aren’t allowed to ride on motorways, but you can ride on a dual carriageway, not far from where I live there’s a two lane carriageway which then opens out into a four lane carriageway, then after a couple of miles back down to two lanes, (it was always a two lane carriageway until very recently). Because it’s now four lanes is this classed as a motorway, and as a learner rider you can’t ride on there anymore?

It's still an A road, motorways have blue signs and if an A turns road into a motorway there will be signs directing restricted traffic like learners along a different route, any other road is OK for learners unless the signs state otherwise.

Good question. @classictouring8902 has the right answer! It's still not a motorway unless signed with the blue signs and pre-warned before that happens. Thanks Ian 😊
