EXACTLY. That's how they PROMOTED the film. The kid FLYING and wearing a RED CAPE is on all the posters. So who the hell went into this movie and thought "oh shit, the kid's an alien?" Sometimes I think Chris needs to leave script writing to the professionals....
@@Dryblack1 But exactly HOW would they have marketed this differently? The whole premence of the movie is what happens when a superpowered alien lands on earth and had utter disdain for us?
@@unusualbydefault Impossible. The marketing of Blair Witch was based on the fact that there WAS a Blair Witch. Nobody went into that movie and thought "oh shit, she's a witch?". They knew that going in. That's why they wanted to see it. A creepy ass witch in the woods abducting people was the HOOK. But how do you sell Brightburn without giving people the hook? Which is that it's evil kid superman? Without the hook, it's just another movie about a disturbed kid, and we've seen that too many times already.
They literally tell you his motivation in the science class with the bees and wasps discussion. He species sends their young to other planets, to be raised on that planet and then eventually take it over/destroy it. IE they are brood parasites, and Brandon literally spells this out in class, by talking about a wasp that does this.
Chris, the twist isn’t that he is an alien. The twist is that the aliens that sent him to earth do not have good intentions. The marketing gives us the impression that Brandon turned bad due to external influence of the community but we find out that he was never good from the get go. Instead of being told to become a symbol of hope for humanity - the Brandon is told to take the earth While Superman is the equivalent to Jesus - Brandon is basically the Anti-Christ version Superman.
I don't think thats a twist, I actually think it was obvious from the trailers, posters, etc. Even more, the twist I expected was that he somewhat resisted or at least there was some kind of conflict. They show glimpses of a very interesting mythos, but they serve no porpuse because the movie turns into an average fun (almost comedic) slasher. The death of the uncle has a full on humor monologue from him that felt completely out of place. I think the main problem with this movie is its tone, its so inconsistent.
@@nheuk3 ya this movie is basically being talked about soley because of the superman connection and the almost shot for shot opening to the man of steel trailer. That is what sold the film knowing he is an alien with powers.
I think they went for the safe bet because, if you put his origin as a plot twist, audiencies probably won't like it because they might look a it as a deception.
Plus, not that big a twist. You know it's going to be sort of superhero origin; setting it up as Superman gone wrong from the start gets the premise directly laid out.
It doesn’t need a lot of depth tho...it’s superman but evil, superman isn’t deep at all, it does what it’s supposed to do and pretty well done, the real depth on most of this should come if and when a franchise stems and we get an anti justice league (which seems to be the intent here)
after seeing Brightburn, my first problem with it is that the ship itself is really the crux of the entire movie. From what we see, up until his ship started talking to him, he was basically a pretty good kid. Obviously intelligent, a little shy, socially awkward, sure, but that doesn't really signify a problem with the boy. There was little to no arc after the ship's activation. No internal struggle. No real sense of resistance to what the ship was telling him to do based on his presumably happy childhood. No real development. He just turned bad. End of story. Brandon: "I grew up here, I seem okay, there's this cute girl in my class who actually seems to like me..." Ship: "Take the Earth". Brandon: "Um... okay." He even says "I want to do good, mom" at one point without ever doing anything to make us believe it. This entire film seems to me something of a wasted opportunity in that sense, which is my second problem with the movie. It would have been so much better to have seen him go down a road to tyranny and destruction step by little step, making wrong decisions and then justifying them to himself. Brandon, thanks to the ship, now believes himself (arguably rightly so) as "superior" to everyone else. Well, let him act as such. He could have done so by specifically killing his uncle for driving drunk, lording his uncle's "inferiority" over him for doing just that. He also argues something else (forget the exact line) about how sometimes some people might deserve it (paraphrasing it there). His descent into righteous brutality showed some signs of being set up but was then dropped in favor of more general mayhem "just because I can". I went into Brightburn with no expectations but came away from it feeling like my expectations weren't even met.

To be honest i hate it so much when Chris suggested that. Not everything has to be about twisting expectation these days. The whole subvert expectation trend is awful. @@noeytindol5529 That was him just expressing an opinion. He's critiquing it because he likes it. His suggestions aren't meant to say "the film did something wrong" but rather an insight into another direction on how the film could have potentially been done. This shows his engagement with the medium and his passion as a filmmaker and creator himself. His opinions were not coming from an intention of malice; he's inspired by the film, and he sees potential. That's all.
No I dont thi k its helping he is seeing a lot of ahit that isnt there none of the shot he mentions in this review is true, the movie does look cheap, the mom is an idiot and it's just not that good.
I loved this movie in every way. It messed with my head and was so creepy and creative. The acting was superb and there was the right amount of gore - nothing too gratuitous. A+ from me!
I finally saw this one! I was cringing in my seat when they cut to his middle school crush's bedroom moments after his dad was talking about giving into urges. I know it was in the trailer, but the sheriff's death still caught me off guard. I was definitely rooting for it because I liked Jame's Gunn's "Slither" and DC's Superman Character. I think this would have made a good Netflix single season miniseries. I would have preferred a story in which he more gradually discovers his powers, tries to do good but keep failing and hurting people and things by accident and then descends into evil. They could tackle the common physics issues alluded to by superman critics: such as catching someone at terminal velocity but breaking every bone in their body; using super speed to move someone out of way of oncoming traffic, but going through them instead; discovering his radiation gives his mom/a loved one cancer. I guess I'll have to wait for the Snyder cut on this one.
Aniki I was gonna say “one of” but then I remembered there’s basically only two contenders with hunterxhunter and jojo (at least from the shonen side of things) so yeah fair enough
I love how you explain things. You're very thorough and you clearly put a lot of thought into these reviews. If I ever make a movie I'd be honored for it to be reviewed by you.
It didn't seem like Brandon became evil by choice. It was that signal his space pod started emanating that seemed to trigger or activate his superhuman powers and his violent tendencies. Like, if the parents decided to destroy the pod or store it in such a way that that signal was blocked, would Brandon ever have even discovered his abilities? Would any of this stuff ever even happened?
Chris, I think your critique about the spaceship crash in the beginning is right on. Here's my only concern with that writing/editing choice might not have had the impact we think it would because it's so close to the superman origin story.
It also brings up questions like the paperwork that had to be created, the people who had to be bought off to keep the lie; a string of 'unrelated' deaths if money or paperwork don't work to keep the lie alive
Spoiler alert Did you notice that at the end of the movie it shows Rain Wilson's character from the movie "Super"??? That movie was made by James Gunn, it's like a connected universe.
I think the point of the movie is the ship waking him up to what his real mission is on earth. So in a sense he did just suddenly turn evil, for me it was okay for him not to show any remorse. I would like to see a sequel though when we (earthlings) try to fight back and get him!
Would be pretty hard pressed to find something like a young child crushing another young child's hand effortlessly and remorselessly in a PG13. Coupled with things like the dad trying to shoot him and Idk, definitely felt like a hard R rating with a lot of very mature moments and themes that wouldnt suit a PG13 audience
Your point about taking away the mystery by doing away with him crashing in the beggining is the same feeling i have when i watch predator. If they didnt show the alien ship in the beggining the movie becomes a thrill ride trying to find out wtf is in the woods. I now always skip to when arnold is getting off the chopper to make predator more enjoyable to rewatch.
ALF 452 I think that applies much better to Predator than to this as when Predator came out no one had a clue what it was about, so that mystery would have been a massive factor in making it feel more thrilling. With Brightburn the way it was marketed heavily relied on the Superman parallels, they even used similar music and font to Man of Steel in the trailer which was genius. So I can’t see how holding back that ‘mystery’ would have helped the film when most people would have just been expecting it. I haven’t seen it yet as it’s not out in the UK but after this review I’ll definitely check it out!
I disagree with Chris' analysis as well. The whole marketing and premise of the movie is "What if child Superman went bad?" Everybody knows he's an alien (if you know who Superman is), so this being some big "reveal" already established. I also don't like how Chris is over-analyzing the whole spec script and process of movie making vs. evaluating what is there. It's great he is trying to get his career off the ground, but he's doing exactly what I feared he would do and that is project, more or less. I like Chris, but other industry people are going to see his reviews and if he keeps projecting, this is going to make his own work more of a target because he critiques and speculate on others processes. He's going to have to make a choice -- Film critic or Film maker -- Some time down the line because you can't be both. Sorry for the tangent, but it's very relevant to this particular review as well, in my opinion.
I’m a huge predator fan (as I’m sure most of us are). I seem to remember hearing somewhere that the ship being added at the beginning was a last minute thing. I think test audiences were confused because the predator isn’t really your traditional looking alien. He looks more like some crabby swamp monster. Leave it to the test group to ruin a perfect twist like that, but the filmmakers felt like they really needed to spell it out for your average audience member.. I agree with you they could have spelled it out in a different way though.
@@BDLabs2 , people have the right to change their minds and I used to consider these Evil mutants to be sort of like a gang. My feelings were why should GOOD mutants suffer for the heinous crimes committed by EVIL mutants. If we were actually living in the X-Men universe, NOW my way of thinking would be even GOOD mutants can turn and become a THREAT to humans. ALL mutants should be DEPOWERED.
"Power Corrupts" Tell that to Superman or the countless X-Men that help humans even though they can kill them all without even trying. With your logic you should also fear every person with power on this planet, what if they go bad and press that nuclear launch button?
I agree with these statements you told us. I also do feel it could have been a bit longer to develop Brandon and more things secretive like you said. It seems to hold back some moments that could be very interesting to see.
It was pretty good. About what I expected and, thankfully, slightly less gory than I thought it would be. I hope they do expand the "Brightburn" universe. It will be interesting to see if "The Batman" of the bright...dark...universe is able to discover, and execute, how to kill Brandon Breyer. By the way, The Mask "Brightburn" wears is also emblematic of the parasitic Wasp he references early in the movie.
He doesn’t need anyone to take care of himself. Plus, he could read books fast, and force professors from major universities to teach him all of the academic courses and topics to pursue his major in “world domination.”

When i watched this movie and saw the kid get the message from his pod, it reminded me of the beginning of dragon ball. Goku was a super alien dude sent to earth to conquer it, only he was dropped off a cliff and forgot all of that. I feel like the kid in brightburn wasnt pulling his motivation out of thin air as much as he was remembering a programmed mission, like a sleeper agent or something. Also i dont know if the kid playing Brandon is an amazing actor for a kid or if him being a kid means he sucks at showing emotions, but his performance was spot on imo. Nope... Superboy Prime was pretty much good until COIE. This is much more like Ultraman
Or a story of a saiyan sent to earth to destroy.
Don’t tell him that. He’s been well behaved for a while now. Plus he has such a pure and hopeful origin, he could’ve been one of the best Supermen of all... he was a victim of horrible circumstances and jumping off the slippery slope... then bad decision after bad decision.

Keep it up, Chris! 👍✨👏
I don't think so. I think he should review the film and now talk about how he'd change it.
That's all.

I really love your filmmaking perspective. I have a new appreciation for directors b/c of this show.
"Chronicle meets Superman" it's good, but I'd rather pitch the de idea as "We need to talk about Kal-El"

Im glad to see a positive review, the script idea is badass! But the trailer didnt impress me too much

the trailers are the entire movie so thats not a good sign for you.
It's nice to see Roy doing well...ohh actually nevermind then.
Poor guy just cant catch a break
At least he got with Elizabeth Banks!

Looks like they ripped off the symbol from Berserk, the best manga ever made

You didn't watch the trailer?
It didn't seem like Brandon became evil by choice. It was that signal his space pod started emanating that seemed to trigger or activate his superhuman powers and his violent tendencies.
Like, if the parents decided to destroy the pod or store it in such a way that that signal was blocked, would Brandon ever have even discovered his abilities? Would any of this stuff ever even happened?
Great Question 🤷🤔?
I have one budgeting tip for you Chris don't buy any more action figures
Lol!
They have resale value so....
Chris,
I think your critique about the spaceship crash in the beginning is right on.
1 year later: Brightburn v.s Superman Dawn Of Aliens
It would be awesome dude!

I think the point of the movie is the ship waking him up to what his real mission is on earth. So in a sense he did just suddenly turn evil, for me it was okay for him not to show any remorse. I would like to see a sequel though when we (earthlings) try to fight back and get him!

Also thanks for the review I really wasn’t sure about this film.
Seems like there was 2 scenes that clearly showed it was rated R....broken glass and pickup truck
How R was it? Well here in the UK, it only got rated 15 after cuts were made

Jk.. love your review
Your point about taking away the mystery by doing away with him crashing in the beggining is the same feeling i have when i watch predator. If they didnt show the alien ship in the beggining the movie becomes a thrill ride trying to find out wtf is in the woods. I now always skip to when arnold is getting off the chopper to make predator more enjoyable to rewatch.
could they realy have held that back in a film being sold on what if superman was bad?
ALF 452 I think that applies much better to Predator than to this as when Predator came out no one had a clue what it was about, so that mystery would have been a massive factor in making it feel more thrilling. With Brightburn the way it was marketed heavily relied on the Superman parallels, they even used similar music and font to Man of Steel in the trailer which was genius. So I can’t see how holding back that ‘mystery’ would have helped the film when most people would have just been expecting it. I haven’t seen it yet as it’s not out in the UK but after this review I’ll definitely check it out!
ALF 452 I get that but come in it’s no secret. We all know Superman’s origin story
If the Gunn brothers decide to do a crossover film with Super (which was teased at the very end), I’d be there opening night!
I think they should, have an evil justice league. Then have them fight a good suicide squad, a good joker, a good lex luthor, good penguin, etc.
@Bryce that sounds like a terrible idea
With James, Brian, and Mark all working together on this movie, it's essentially a Gunn show.
Which we need to buy tickets to
I thought this was done by Sam Raimi at first not Gunn. Would have been nice to see him come back to horror and comic book films at the same time!

"Power Corrupts". After watching this movie now I understand why the humans in the X-Men universe had an aversion/phobia towards the Mutants.
You didn’t understand that when there were literal powerful evil mutants running around in the Marvel universes?
@@BDLabs2 , people have the right to change their minds and I used to consider these Evil mutants to be sort of like a gang. I've been constantly refreshing for this review!
That's interesting because it's way, WAY more Gorey than I thought it would be. I honestly can't recall a movie this Gorey in a while.
Of course we all know their will be a sequel, I mean this post credit scene is too magnifique 👌🏻💯

He gave me chills with some of his lines.
