How to do a timing belt and water pump on a Honda Civic 1.7 liter engine
For allllll who had a problem with this video...... U guys are insane.... he showed direct view to each port removed..... even using one hand you were looking at it as if you saw through his eyes.... thanks dude. Great video
I think youtube has trolls who just vote videos down because they are hateful and probably are pissed because they don't understand what you are doing and that is their way of coping. TY! For your time and sharing your knowledge!
I've done this job before. Brian did an EXCELLENT job of filtering all of the possible information into a concise "get 'er done" video - with nothing more then OUR help in mind. He's not taking all the extra time to make these videos with an eye solely focused on himself... duh! He's doing them for US!
So before anyone struts their stuff and starts pounding their chest in criticizing him for technical shortcomings, consider the overall picture.
Thanks Brian for ALL the extra time you spend in consideration of others. You're a stand up guy! I'm VERY appreciative of ALL your videos. THANK YOU!! ;)
i know nothing about a Civic Engine but this helped alot since ima get one soon Thanks Brian
Thanks Brian. This wasn't the first video I watched on changing a 7th gen Civic timing belt but, it was the first one I watched that got me there. Clearly you know what you're doing enough to make a video, no missteps, no looking and wondering what the next step is and some good tips along the way.
Half the time of other videos, love the pre-staging. Thanks!!
I use damaged bolt extractors. Craftsman has some good ones. You can also weld a nut on it.
Thanks a bunch, guy! You're a life saver. I never would have attempted this without this video. While I still needed a little extra instruction once I got down into the timing belt (after a few days of wailing on the harmonic balance bolt) it was much easier than I had anticipated.
by far the best video for anyone who has basic mechanic skills.. thanks bro
Very well illustrated and explained. The humor is a plus, thanks!
When you use a light for video, a large, close light source gives way better soft lighting that keeps everything illuminated, with fewer hot spots. Those rechargeable multi-LED trouble lights you can buy are great, if you remember to take them off the vehicle before the customer drives away (don't laugh, it's easy to do). When the light source is large, you don't get the sharp deep shadows or bright spots that are often seen with normal flashlights. Great job, Brian.
Brian, you always make the best vids. Whenever I get a car that is foreign..to me, I always check your channel first, whenever other people have a video I always choose yours.
I have no complaints on this video or any others.
Thanks as always!
@trunitemare Glad you liked it. At least it gave me something fun to do out of the rain!
Anticlockwise. For sure. Did one yesterday. Motor rotation is also anticlockwise when looking at the pulleys.
Hey Brian, the last time i did a timing belt was in my 76 Pinto MPG, 2.3, i never even took the harmonic balancer off. The new belt instructions said don't pry on the belt but i just sprayed lightly with silicone in that area and i did pry slightly and it slid in, bottom line was it worked. Remember the Pinto, better than the Vega anyway, Vega was 3 gallons of gas+ a quart of oil
@blackwaltz13 The UP on the cam wheel should be aligned with the notch behind it. That should be done before taking the old belt off and the crank mark will be easier to find after that. The belt should not be over tightened or it will fail early- and make a lot of noise. It actually wears out the idler pulley, water pump etc. pretty fast and when they fail the belt falls off.
Thanks. I've put in an insane number of hours of frustration to learn my trade. I find balancing that with humor is absolutely mandatory for good health. ; )
Thanks- I'm flattered and happy to have helped you smile. = )
most of those people put thumbs down they have nothing to do or they dont know anything about mechanics or cars keep moving on great job brian!!!!!
This was very helpful in combination with another video I watched I had no problems with the job. Especially appreciate the advice for heating the crank bolt. Worked like a charm
lol I can appreciate that. When making these videos I'm requested to make as much content as possible including many details. Personally, I'm like you in just wanted the basic essentials and not much filler material. Fortunately for you, you can skip ahead if you need to in order to find the info you need.
Hey Brian, i watch heaps of your vids. I found you early this year when I started my automotive course you have heaps of great tips and stuff and your humor is great! keep it up
If it's raining everyday, you live in western Washington! LOL Here is the Honda repair that every Honda owner needs to be aware of and ready to perform! So sad our American tools can't always get the job done (even with a higher cost)! Another great video!!
Well thank you much and good to hear from you!
Great video amd very humorous. Made it that much easer to watch and learn. Keep them coming!
@idkfrofro I don't own a Civic. I drive a Cummins Turbo diesel. It does pretty good on gas too. I also have a CBR F4i it's even better on gas. It's silly to use something that's 4.8 tons to haul you around when something 0.1875 tons will do the job and is more fun.
Love the video great placement of camera to see what your doing very helpful
You're welcome- thanks for taking the time to say "thank you!"
In particular, I like that your video is short, and to the point. I got a little lost, but if I watched it again I could probably do the job. I agree with another commenter that it would've maybe helped to have someone else hold the camera, but then again, maybe they wouldn't be as good at getting the exact shots you needed.
Turn anti clockwise till the marks line up on the cam (top pulley) Replace the belt and then rotate crank twice (cam -top one will rotate once) as a check that you did it right.
i knew i would have had to do one of these at work today and this video helped me alot cheers buddy
@605manuel YOU my friend are correct! I'm waiting for the new Contour GPS with a mic jack to come out.
Thanks. I'm not worried about a thumbs down now and then. I know I have room for improvement. If anything it keeps me humble and gives me something to work on/improve.
Great walkthrough and entertaining to boot. Thanks!
@83budda The trouble comes from overcharging. If the belt slips the demand for juice kicks up. This can also happen if the alt shorts internally.
Hey Brian, thanks for the video! I also live in Washington or Oregon, and yes, it never stops raining. Great video. There's a couple of Civics and Accords in the family. I've been thinking about trying to tackle those timing belts because it's always 900 to 1200 bucks at the shop. Really appreciate your sense of humor too!
I did a 2001 civic timing service just last year. What a pain it was, but all went well. Good cars.
@hectorbetanzos82 That is high risk high reward. Another high risk high reward method is to support the breaker bar and socket and then hit the starter momentarily. Thanks for sharing that here.
Thank
You brother straight up you made it easy to understand saved mad money bc of you I subscribed and definitely enjoyed this channel 👊🏻🙏🏻
Good job on a one man video. You could consider a hat, forehead or eyeglass type camera to free up your other hand. Also pre mounting small high power lights to help eliminate a need for flashlights. Try TigerDirect or other sites for affordable items like that. I joined Bizrate (a business member club on TigerDirect and get even better prices, even on sale items). Anyway thanks for helping me to see what I'm in for when I change my 2007 civic EX timing belt soon. I've already got about 140K miles on it. Keep up the great videos. Thanks, mphII Holmes Inc
Thanks for the post man. I have a 2001 that needs a new cover gasket, but most vids are for 5th and 6th gen. Looks like a pain in the ass compared to older models. Thanks again
Thank you for the video. Like someone else said, you showed me that I can do this, even though the steps involved are long.
brian you do a great job don,t worry about the people who giving you thumbs down i like the vid
take care amigo
Thank you Brian! It rains a lot in Louisiana too! :)
I have done more than a few dozen timing belts for family and friends but I am not a mechanic by trade, But spending 5 years in college for Mechanical Engineering has taught me , find the right person to help you fill in the informational gaps. You have done this quite well, along with a twist of humor. Nice job. Thanx! PS. Get someone else to hold the camera next time and I think you have a future in UA-cam tutorials.
@83budda Make sure to get the alternator belt tension and and bolts tight. You may also want to replace the alternator at the same time. The circuits are protected from shorts to ground but NOT from an alternator that overcharges. Slipping belt can cause this as well as internals coming apart inside.
It's kind of a mechanical fuse like you say on the drive gear for the timing belt, but just a convenience for service and simplicity for the harmonic balancer.
thanks for all your videos man. I just found your channel.
+Justin Williams You're welcome Justin. Great to hear from you!
@xosamixo1989 The belt is MOST LIKELY off 1-3 teeth. Some rare outliers (statistics) are an unplugged cam sensor, or the worst case scenario is an alternator belt that wasn't tight enough. If your alternator overcharges it will make your tachometer not work, the temp gauge not work and the green key on the cluster flash. Make sure the alternator belt is tight by tightening it until you can twist it on it's longest run 90 degrees or quarter turn and NO more than that. Let me know what U find
Thanks for all the info, just completed a belt job. we had to rent the main pulley too. Two breaker bars and a pipe. Man that bolt was Tight!
Thanks. It's pretty good way to live.
Thank you man, entertaining & helpful. (6 years later) If there's anything else worth mentioning about this engine i would appreciate it!
Very good video. Was helping some mexican buddys to replace thought I.new what was up p. I seen this video for a.little knowledge and was more ignorant than I thought. But now I got it gonna help replace belt and pump tomorrow thankks for the help
@peelout40 Thanks.- I'm glad you liked it.
Awesome video, there's another video that's 3 times longer....Thank you for being quick.
Thank you for your time making this video.
Thank you for making this Brian!
I may have to do this today. Not sure on the year
Aloha my friend
Excellent video. Thanks. You saved me time and money.
I LOVE THOSE! I've lost three of them! They are so skinny they go out the bottom of my pockets.
@brakedd Thank you. I didn't make up "love tap" but idiot hood is all mine.
how long does it take on average to change a timing belt on a 05 Civic 4 cylinder and what could happen if an old one breaks while you are driving
This video is really helpful, one tip ill give you .. Try gettin a universal tri-pod. It would be easier to see and work on your projects.
+Justin R Got it! Check out tomorrows video on 6.4L injector tricks. Straight up SOLID!
Your da man!,,you help me a lot when I got questions? ?thank you
What do you like better in Denver?
@FJ5RACE Thanks. Maybe put up a Ron Paul poster or two- This bat---- crazy country could use some of his brand of "crazy" in D.C. about now.
Hey, great video! I will be replacing the distributor on my 1991 Civic 1.5 Sedan. Will I have to adjust the timing after doing so? Don't know much about how the timing is done.
Great video! But is this the only way to change the pump?
Brian Thanks for the response I will work on it soon keep up the good videos
Right on- you're welcome!
LOVE IT!!! Great Entertainment while Getting The Job DONE! 👏👏👏😉
Read the emissions label under your hood. It will likely say "not adjustable" or "no adjustment needed"
ok..kool..gotcha..now how do i put it back together..should i watch video backwards?..jus kiddin..great job..thanks
Hey Great vid. I tried removing the tensioner bolt with a 14mm socket but some how managed to stuff the head of the bolt. Any ideas on how I could remove the bolt now?
Thanks Terry!
Thanks.
@83budda You bet. If the alt. fails it wipes out the computer $750 key program $60 Alternator $150 ELD $50. It's cheaper to just be super careful and replace the Alternator at 125K miles.
u explain very well and im gettin a 2002 honda civic
Outstanding video,. very good details.
Good video and timing change, and the person thats giving you thumbs down im giving you a double thumbs up!!
@wngjr1 Thanks- glad you liked it!
Hey Brian great video on 03 civic water pump and timing belt change. Do you have video on 01-03 civic Manuel transmission rebuild? Shiv
Great video most that i have watched dont give you tue little tips and tricks!!! Wish me luck im going to try it next weekend!!!
Welcome
Hey video helped thanks, wondering if I were to get my timing belt done, if the tension spring should also be replaced?
Welcome cuz!
nice job, just wondering why you had to unplug position sensor
I'm doing a 2004 1.7 if I line up all of the marks and put a new timing belt on it should be ok right?? Thank you for posting the video!! they are handy
Great video, thanks a lot. I wouldn't have been able to do the job without it. I also used the DIY on the civic forums to supplement the job. If you ever get the chance to do some videos for the Mercedes 190e let me know!
Hi brain do I have to turn the crankshaft counterclockwise 2 times even though I have the marks lined up or do I turn only when the marks move ? I will be doing mine soon I'm mechanically incline I just never did a timing belt before due to fear of failure thanks for the vid thumbs up!!
Thanks- good luck!
Is the woodruff key a safety mechanism for the crankshaft on this honda civic. Like if the belt slips to much would the woodruff key fall apart ,and stall the engine in hopes of protecting the engine.
nice fucking video man ...thanks make more w a clear understanding its your video id like to watch more of yours
It's a good idea so when you're working around the alternator output post to remove the serpentine belt you don't arc it to ground with your wrench.
Thanks Ade!
Interesting enough to invent a new word... I'm flattered!
Two questions: 1) Did you drain the coolant to replace the water pump? And 2) Did you replace the crank/cam shaft oil seals that came in the kit you linked in the description?
After doing the job, I wanted to post the answers to my questions for others to see. 1) Yes, drain the coolant from the radiator through its drain plug beneath the front bumper and the engine coolant from the drain plug next to the oil filter. Refill using the recommended procedures found in the Haynes manual or on civic forums. I refilled improperly, which made the system air bound and subsequently overheated the engine. After several top-ups, the engine temp remains normal after heating up. 2) I replaced only the lower crankshaft/oil pump seal b/c it was leaking.
@iNf3rNuSdI4bLuS1 I'm with you man. It's due to the relationship between ignorance and fear. If people see things they don't understand those things scare them.
thanks
You're welcome, Ryan.
do you have to disconnect the negative terminal on the battery before replacing the timing belt? thanks!!!
