It all starts with writing down your income and expenses. Numbers don’t lie. It took me awhile to get there but I’m here now! My husband retiring in November (2 years earlier then planned) REALLY opened my eyes! Being consistent and watching your bank accounts and credit card balances is key.

Having too much stuff drags you down. Growing up, our parish priest always emphasized a “simple life”, but I didn’t know specifically by example. There were so many of us, and so little money that having more stuff was a source of fulfillment and comfort. I watched an animated movie “Spirited Away”, and that got me thinking. Now, minimalism, in everything and prayer to avoid spending helps a lot.

@@carrino15 I haven’t watched it in about 15 years, but the scene where all of the stuff kept coming out (vomiting?) of the person, including a bicycle (!), I interpreted that to mean all of the things of this world we had relationships with. I realized this was an Asian movie, and there were Asian religious undertones in it, including those toward materialism.

I hope you continue to have success in your journey. I am pulling for you! I lived on a budget since I moved out of my parent’s house at age 18. Over the past several years I stopped budgeting and pretty much purchased whatever I wanted whenever I wanted. Now- because I am uncomfortable with my savings account balance- I am back to budgeting and basically have stopped buying clothes, shoes and home decor. I have saved so much money I. The past three months. I even cut my grocery store weekly bill in half AND managed cutting my electric bill by more than half! I am taking that “extra money” and applying it to my mortgage payment and saving a portion of it, too- so I have cash in case of emergency or should I want to take a one or two week trip

We need to give our brain time to "re-wire." According to scientific research, it takes 18 to 254 days to break negative habits, 66 days on average varying from person to person. We need to just keep getting back on that bike every time we fall off. It also helps to remember that people/corporations are getting rich off of our hard-earned money. On a side note, why don't you put your shoes in a bin so that your cat doesn't chew them. You would be saving on shoe repair. :-)

Hello and thanks for your videos - just subscribed. I loved the gym metaphor, it's so right !!! I'm a 42 year old guy in France and have decided to finally take charge of my finances and health. It all started with the gym : don't have precise goals at the moment, but I do want to get better at it, but that lead me to start taking care of the rest, namely my finances, because I am SO tired of living paycheck to paycheck. I used to have a completely irrational fear of opening my bank app and checking stuff, but, once I got over that fear, it quickly became sort of fun constantly being careful and asking myself whether I need to spend on this or that... I'm still a beginner, but determined to start saving money and be able to have complete control of my finances.

I've actually noticed some financial influencers are moving away from "No buys". What usually ends up happening is for the period that you said you don't buy anything, after that period the person that goes back and buys all the things that they were avoiding purchasing. Often they're given the instructions to keep a list of things that they wanted to buy and then after the end of the no buy period go back and see if they still want them. If a person has a shopping addiction or uses a shopping to fill a void in their life they will just end up shifting their shopping or spending to another part of the year.
You have to address the feelings that you have around shopping and spending money for it to be successful.
I personally do not do no buys at all, I have a budget for fun money or pocket money and I spend that money however I see fit and when it's gone it's gone. I treat my savings and investment as a bill and it's a line item on my paycheck budget spreadsheet every payday. I don't treat it as an afterthought after I pay my bills.
It took many years of self-reflection, budgeting, journaling, and watching different UA-cam personalities or listening to podcasts to learn the skills of being satisfied with what I can afford in my budget. Even though there is more money in my bank account I know that I would have more satisfaction from putting that money towards savings, investing, paying off debt, and reaching other goals for myself.
This came about after running three credit cards up twice and taking out consolidation loans to pay them off. I can now see something add it to my things I want to buy a list and then during the months I get three paychecks a month instead of two I look at that list and see what I want to buy and and now I'm able to leave most of that stuff right where it is. Or I add it to my Christmas list for when people ask me what I want.

Idk what the reasons are for the influencers you mention. One thing might be that it gets a bit repetitive to say over and over again that you didn't buy something. In one video (sorry, can't rememberwho it was) someone said that moving from overconsumption to a no buy might keep you in an unhealthy relationship with spending and money. Problematic in a different way, but still not how it should be.

These are great points. If shopping somehow is emotionally satisfying then it's not about the items.
I decided years ago shopping does fill a need to fix things, but I don't have to buy. I have a list of books and vintage I hunt down for myself and friends. If I go out all morning searching thoroughly yet find nothing on the list it still fills that need to be doing something I enjoy toward a specific goal. It's weird it took me years to figure out it wasn't the books or jewelry themselves, it's the search that was the good time! The items are just reminders of that good time

Finding cheaper alternatives is key. As far as coffee goes, this week I bought larger bags to make at home, and just a smaller box of pods for a quick cup (when I am not in the mood for scooping coffee into a reusable kcup filter 🙄). As far as replacing the spray tan, the tinted Jergens lotions applied every day build up a nice color. My sister bought me this, and I never used it, now I use it all of the time. I’m no-buying lipstick. 💄 I had so many! Now, I bought (defeats the purpose?) refillable lip balm containers, and some beeswax. I’m going to melt/mix it poor into the containers, and be happy with that. Someday I will be lipstick-free…💋💄

Smart with the coffee. I went to about half homemade cold brew( it's so easy, who knew?) and half in a small French press(this takes more fiddling around to get it to your taste, when I'm in a big hurry I fall back on adding sugar if it's bitter). Love Jergens, it works well!

I feel like - for most people - everything in moderation- applies here. You don’t need to do a no buy sthg. Sthg. I would say amongst all the frivolous spending- find out, what is really important for you - still buy / do those things. And everything else, you ditch.
As for savings goals - you will grow old - save for retirement generously. You need to pay taxes - put those aside.
Everything else ist play around money.
❤❤❤ cu and keep up the good work.

My mind shifted with "no buy" periods, when i realised that i will save that gained money from "no buy" not for future shopings and other liabilities - which leaves me with 0 in the pocket sooner or later anyway - but i can save it for growing my capital. Capital is the money that never leaves you. You only invest it in things that you can sell, return your capital and earn the interest in adition. In this way your all life work results will never dissapear - only will be growing - and even you will be able to leave them to your beloved one's after death. It makes your life and job so meaningfull..

I had to change spending to cover healthcare (chemo etc) that wasn't covered by insurance. Like hosting Thanksgiving will make you inventory your pantry and clean your house, a series of money emergencies will make you decide what are non-essentials: hair appointments, wine, IG trends, theater, hobbies, restaurants, facials, movies, nails, down to daily Starbucks. Homemade coldbrew and nailpolish I apply are still in my life for now:)

The debt free journey that got us to where we are today is the 3rd debt free journey for us. Two failures then success. Third one is the charm syndrome? We are not going to do something unless we are ready. So now you are ready to get your finances in order. I watch a ton of personal finance videos. There are a lot of really nice well intended people that want to get their finances under control but they lack the clear vision and will power to say no to spending on stuff they don't need and set real worthwhile money goals. Sue and I don't do an on purpose no buys we just don't buy. We allow each of us some money in our budget to spend on whatever but that is it. Putting money in a savings account or brokerage is actually more fun than shopping online but it takes a while to appreciate that.

We were both guilty of bad money habits and we both worked hard to correct those bad habits. I want to say this hopefully I don't sound like a jerk but between the two of us, I'm more the money person, I do all the budgeting and sometimes Sue gets annoyed at me but She cooperates and She really appreciates where we are compared to where we were, which was a bad place financially, we had a lot of debt. We had no idea where our money was going. Now we know where every cent goes and we have an overall plan. It seems sort of strange now because it is such a different thought and behavior process.

Maybe, I'm different. I think you are over thinking this "savings" thing. Do what I do. Once I deposit a portion of my pay into a certain high-yeild savings account, I DO NOT touch it; not even for emergencies. This special account is for retirement. I have 2 credit cards. One is for food and the other is for clothing. The card I allocate for food also has my auto-pay bills like cell phone, car insurance, etc.- " MY NEEDS" that way I know at the end of the month what I am paying for food, essentials and entertainment. I monitor my spending online daily to see my balance. As for my clothing credit card "MY WANTS", that's always zero. I don't need things. There's nothing wrong with wearing the same pair of 5-7 jeans I own. I may have 15-20 tees, a few polos and 5-7 jackets and mostly all I really wear anyway is gym wear. I (You) really don't need things. I think that's what's difficult for people to grasp. You don't need stuff. Only buy things to replace old worn and torn things
Once I reach about $7000 in my checking account. I go to my bank where I have my :high yield savings acct. and I'll deposit $5000 into it. I am consistent with this. So now, I have a balance of $2000 which I need to budget and be mindful of and I can't over spend until my next pay. This is all I do to save and it works. You can have all the coffee you want. You just need to make sure that once you allocate a portion of your pay to a savings, you cannot touch it.
What I see in you is your self care. I get you want to look your best. Do it all yourself, less the haircuts, You need to seek service for that. You already have a BF so he should already know what you truly look like under your minimal makeup.

I struggle to find a "why" also. Retirement is such an abstract thing.. What I am doing is overpaying on my mortgage, and I pay into my buffer account and savings, as if they are a bill. That way savings are growing, and I spend what is left, and trust me, I spend every dollar. 😅 I keep my savings in another bank, with no easy access, and forget about those accounts. 😅

The why might appear out of nowhere. Recently I looked (only online, but still) at some houses, saw a really nice one, thought at first it was too expensive and then thought it might be not that far out of reach. I didn't actually run the numbers so I might do that for a few examples. But every bit of money that's already there puts more houses whithin reach without adding anything to the mortgage.

It’s all excellent feedback for you as you go thru this journey! Good luck!

No buy might be a helpful tactic for some but don't think it's a right focus for you at this time. Maybe better is trying to get the idea that every transaction you make is a "no buy". Up until you can defend the purchase significantly. It's really all about your values and thought process related to the worth of money. Much more important than any particular purchases. You've made excellent progress so far. Further to go. You'll know you're getting there when you spend on something you know isn't really defendable and it hurts. Hurts like when hitting some small pet or squirrel on the road. Seems from your past videos, and this in car bit, you get the idea. But knowing isn't doing. Getting it as DNA. Making every transaction a price vs. value determination as second nature. Think that would be really winning. Now you're at least in the game. Maybe ahead by a run in the third inning. Long way to go and a tough opponent. But think you have the talent to win this thing and maybe win it big.
