Another beautiful bowl with gorgeous grain and tones. Its final shape is very interesting and attractive, too. Your videos are top quality with good lighting, composition and audio that displays your techniques very well. I'm a photographer hobbyist (60+ years) so I recognize good work. I also second "any Caliber"s" comments. You are a wonderful teacher to us. Your humble style and explanations are especially pleasing and appealing. You make turning look so easy which is the mark a true artist and craftsman. Thanks for your service from another vet (USAF 1963-67).
Great resilience in the face of disappointment; original intentions don't always have to come about. That's beautiful work and you're right about how the rim works out well.
Fantastic work Rod. You are the very reason I began turning. I purchased a lathe and turned my first bowl April 20, this year and I haven't stopped yet. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and teaching new turners like my self how to do it. Thank you sir.
Beautiful bowl. My husband and I enjoy watching your videos. Only been turning for about 3 months now. He’s really enjoying something new in his workshop.
Such a generous and humble man!! I have no doubt the "turners" that you highlight are just as thankful for you as you are for them! And this is another beautiful piece of art!!
Haven't read all the comments but as far as I went I was surprised that no one caught that you save that beautiful walnut from the fire. The reason I say that is you shouldn't burn walnut it gives off toxic fumes. Ever noticed that very few plants will grow around a walnut. Semper Fi for my son (20) and Aim High for me (4.5).
Dear Mr. Humphrey... Thank you! I came across one of your videos, by accident. While I'm not a wood turner, was so impressed I searched and "binge watched" many of your other videos. Thank you.
Beautiful! My grandparents had a huge black walnut tree in their back yard. We would swing high into its branches on the swing my grandfather built and work hard to get the nuts from the hard shell. Wonderful childhood memories.
I learned your technique for defining the natural edge with parting tool watching this video about a year ago. Thanks for the lesson. I use it a lot and really like to watch you create.
What I like most about your videos is that, as I am very new to woodturning, you explain your rational as you go along and include tool selection. That is a treamendous help for us newbies. Added to that, you take the odd upset on the chin, I know as a design opportunity, (I have had a few lol) and move on to produce a stunning piece, one you should be extreemely proud of.. I would be. Thank you so much for your chanel, your easy manner of instruction and with such a laid back easy presentation, your inspire others to try and boost confidence . Wishing you and your family a great Christmas and Happy New Year.
I love this bowl! I"m not the world's biggest fan of live edge, anyway, so I think it looks better. And,...I love walnut. The fact that this wood was a "chance find" only makes it better. And thank you (and Tom!) for the discount. I just ordered a couple of sets.
I do enjoy watching the turning presentations. I have a maple burl drying after a tree fell last fall. I have a cherry burl that will be coming off the tree this coming Monday. My father was a wood shop teacher and taught me to turn years ago. I'm trying to get the time back to start turning on the lathe again. I need to watch some more videos on turning to bring back what I've forgotten. I'm starting out with easy turning activities and then building up to the more difficult challenges.
The grain patterns and colors are amazing. Great work. Also thank you for your honesty and integrity. Something we don’t see enough of these days. Thank you for your service sir.
So glad to find out your from Indian i am a newer Turner and it is nice to know one of my teachers lives close by thanks for all you 're teaching vedio
I am fortunate to have neighbors with large Black Walnut trees. I am also unfortunate to have neighbors with black walnut trees that flank my back yard. Fortunate that they happily gift me free wood. Unfortunate that they also give me free walnuts. Those little buggers hide in the grass while mowing and will twist an ankle every time. Fortunately, the wood is nice to turn bowls, hollow vessels, and platters. Even made some nice spoons from several branches that also fall into my yard. I do make them something for the wood they give me. I have noticed that it can be fractured easily on the lathe but is a solid piece once turned. As you have so demonstrated on this stunning bowl. Well done Marine, just incredible. From one veteran to another, Aim High...
LOL, yes indeed, a blessing and a curse! The squirrels sure love them. I do too, but they're a real pain to crack open. Wonderful wood to work with though. I've got a few loved ones in the Air Force. Semper Fi!
I have always been using Black Walnut in many of my wood working jobs. I have also sawmilled many Black Walnut logs on my sawmills in upstate New York. Living in South Carolina now but will be moving back up north this fall. Great Bowl, my first bowl I am working on now is Ambrosia Maple.
"There are no mistakes, only happy accidents" I really enjoy your videos and love the work you do. I am learning every day more and more. Thank you for all of your hard work.
Rod, it’s amazing it is! We really appreciate you. Thank you for your time for this video and all your time served for this country. I was in Iraq for a year in biap as a civilian worker. I thanked all of our military men and women there I seen and some thanked me back. I understood why not all would thank me. Then I moved to fort hood in Texas. I worked on the Bradley Tanks for BAE System. Anyhoo. Thank you. I was there from late 2006-2008.
Thanks very much. I appreciate your service as well, we really relied on civilian contractors while I was there, Ramadi 2004 with The Magnificent Bastards. Semper Fi
Thanks for the verbage while u were turning. Makes the video so personal. I’m a 20 year turn er,but watching and listening I can pick up bits of knowledge from u that I didn’t know 🐫🐫 thanks and keep talking n
I, also, really like turning walnut. Normally the contrasts of shade and color, and the figure turn out beautifully. Thanks for sharing your process on this fantastic bowl. Have a very merry Christmas, and I look forward to new videos in the coming year.
Good morning Rod. This is a beautiful piece of workmanship. I agree with you regarding the contrast of the sap wood to the heart wood on walnut. May you and your family have a blessed and Merry Christmas. May the LORD bless you greatly in this coming year.
I think it turned out gorgeous. I’ve never seen would like that. Seem pretty hard wood watching you turn it but it is beautiful. Good work. Thank you for sharing.
I've only been turning for about 6 months now, but I gotta say it makes me feel better to see an experienced turner make those kinds of "design changes". I think the biggest thing I've learned so far is how easily a project can turn into a disaster (or just a design change) with one little moment of carelessness.
Great video, Rod! I learn so much watching you work with that bowl gouge. I didn't quite understand what went wrong to make the bark fly off, but you sure did the piece justice! That figure in the bottom of the bowl is stunning! Thanks so much for everything you do for your audience! Cheers and Merry Christmas!
Just amazing how you make your bowels and how you comment on your tools and thoughts on what you’re making, it really helps me as I’m just starting out. Enjoy all your videos and your work, keep it up because I’m learning a lot.
When you started the video it was, in my eyes, very similar to the turning I have been doing with some oak pieces I scrounged from a tree surgeon working maybe a 1/4 mile away. The sound of chainsaws drew me. I also tried to include as many 'crotch' pieces as I could. So as I opened with, similar apart from two things. One was the skill you have with your tools. Despite trying to match your angle of attack sometimes I not only get a 'catch' but it drags the chisel out past the rim of the bowl. You, never get this problem. I know I'm doing something wrong but just what? One day I'll fix it. Two, was the dramatic colour you suddenly exposed with your first coat of sanding paste. I have never been lucky enough to use Black Walnut, what a fantastic range of grain and colour leap out at you. I was so impressed. Thank you so much for the valuable lessons you give. Truly a master.
Very very nice. I am glad to see some one else has a problem with bark from time to time. Great job. Some woods do look better with no bark. Even just part on the bark can make a bowl look better.
That is a very nice asymmetric bowl, beautiful wood. I have to admit I love it when you guys dig out the bark and put some colourful epoxy in then turn it, epoxy addicts anonymous meeting tonight.
Another beautiful bowl with gorgeous grain and tones. Its final shape is very interesting and attractive, too. I love your channel. No silliness, no stupefying music, just good solid instructions. Excellent camera work. Just exactly what I need!
Thank you, and I appreciate the feedback!
Our family motto is Improvise, Adapt, and Overcome. Things happen, good job adapting the design.
Great resilience in the face of disappointment; original intentions don't always have to come about. That's beautiful work and you're right about how the rim works out well.

It is a beautiful bowl and I figured out who you are, you are the Bob Ross of wood turning! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you for the video and for not having annoying music playing. I like the sound of the tools.
Anyone who makes something useful from nature is a blessing to our planet! Love the bowl !
Dear Mr. Humphrey... Thank you! I came across one of your videos, by accident. While I'm not a wood turner, was so impressed I searched and "binge watched" many of your other videos. Thank you.
Thank you, I appreciate that very much! Welcome to my channel!
Beautiful! My grandparents had a huge black walnut tree in their back yard. We would swing high into its branches on the swing my grandfather built and work hard to get the nuts from the hard shell. Wonderful childhood memories.
Another breathtaking beauty. Such talent.
I think the natural notch in the sidewall actually added to the beauty of the piece! Very nice indeed!
Thank you for doing some of the video in real time. That helps me be more patient at the lathe. Beautiful piece.
It's beautiful. And to think it started out as firewood. Wow!
I love working Black Walnut, Terrific colors. Very nice bowl, Brother. Semper Fi.
Thanks, brother, much appreciated! Semper Fi
LOL you have Angry Chipmunks in your shop also ! lol that Bowl looks great just like it is, it was meant to be !

Beautiful piece. Turning is good for the soul, peaceful. S/ F

So glad to find out your from Indian i am a newer Turner and it is nice to know one of my teachers lives close by thanks for all you 're teaching vedio
Just one word... BEAUTIFUL

Sir, I went looking to find your channel today. Found a year old video. It was so good to hear your voice again!
You're the bob ross of wood turning so soothing and relaxing great job sir
Great video. Many good instructional ideas for a beginner like me. Looking forward to seeing more from you Rod.
Much appreciated, Nicholas!
Awesome bowl! Looks great even with the bark gone! Thanks for your service!
SO fantastic! And you're the most selfless human being I think I've ever heard of.
You're very kind, thank you!
I like natural turnings. It's more challenging than a lot of other turnings and I think the results are usually prettier.
Came out looking great! Semper fi.
Beautiful grain! Well worth the trade!
I think it turned out gorgeous. I’ve never seen would like that. Seem pretty hard wood watching you turn it but it is beautiful. Good work. Thank you for sharing.
You have to love those design changes. We all have them and you rolled with it and made a beautiful bowl! The walnut had very nice figure. - Ed
We sure do! 😝 Thank you Ed!
wow those shavings are like chocolate! this is a really lovely piece i’m glad you saved it from the fire

It turned out beautiful despite the hiccup with the bark edge. And some awesome work by the subscribers!
Merry Christmas from Sweden!
Your voice is so soothing .... .... love your work and every calming post ....

Another beautiful turning Top. I was a bit disappointed when the bark came off but black walnut never ceases to amaze. Merry Christmas and Semper Fi!
Looks great. I also like Ack's products and have been using them for about a year. Great stuff.
Very very nice. I am glad to see some one else has a problem with bark from time to time. Great job. Some woods do look better with no bark. Even just part on the bark can make a bowl look better.
MR.Humphrey beautiful simply beautiful.🤗❤🎅🎄🙏
One of your best turning ever
Fantastic job yet again. Hugs from Halifax

I like to play with resin occasionally... I've got one brewing now as a matter of fact, but don't know when I'll upload it. Thank you!
Look forward to it, I’ve subscribed so sure to see it :)
Very very nice. Beautiful bowl - even with the "design modifications"!
Exquisite bowl Rod. I do like the way those products bring out the beauty in the wood. Really worked well with walnut.
Another beautiful piece!
Awesome it's looking amazing.. Thanx mr Humphrey
You're welcome, and thank you!
