What happened to this kid is going to have a backlash of defense and the department will most likely be harassed to the point where they will shut off social media contact like Facebook and what not , furthermore depending on the amount of backlash the cop will most likely be fired and forced to find another job ( which will probably be another department but that’s irrelevant). So no it’s a wild analogy in the sense that what could have happened & the end result are completely different.
Yeah seriously. Would it be that hard to contact the parents? Like come on man is it really that hard to just understand students with special needs? Like bruh they be treating that student like an adult she’s just a little kid. The fact that the teachers allowed the police to easily persuade them to turn on a disabled child is one of the sorriest, most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.
This! I couldn't possibly be persuaded to make up an allegation against a person, much less a CHILD, just because an officer pressures me. I'd be coming after the district with a fat lawsuit and I'm not litigatious!
The teacher wanted to do this anyhow, she has a mind of her own. No one ever made me do or say something I didn't want to. She's a lie she was too eager to do it she could have stood her ground and said no way, end of discussion.
Perfect example of the services besides police our over worked and stressed out school staff need. I have epilepsy and I had a seizure at school. It was 97 and I was in highschool. Guess who showed up first. Not the medics but police who accused me of being on drugs and handcuffed me and pinned me to the ground. The school was aware of my disorder and told the police the couldn't guess what was wrong. They even ignored my medic alert necklace. It resulted in me quitting school and getting my GED. I get depressed sometimes when people talk about prom and other school activities. This is disgusting I feel for the poor child. They tried to charge me with disorderly conduct and resisting. What a joke
Wow, all schools are definitely not equal. In elementary school we had a classmate with epilepsy and were educated by the teacher and a counselor not to freak out if a seizure ever happened and to be respectful.
10 yr olds know the difference between right & wrong. She even said herself she knew she was doing wrong. It doesn't matter if she's in distress or not. She needs to learn to self-soothe & that starts at an early age. Also, NOWHERE in the footage was anyone yelling at that girl. You're being entirely too sensitive.
So every time a kid acts up we call the police?? Whatever happened to the parent? Putting a police in between a parent and their child is *wrong*, point blank. This child needed to learn a lesson, but it was something her father could've taught her, not the cops.
The law states students must be integrated into mainstream classrooms whenever possible. Even in the 80s and 90s i was in sped yet spent most of the day in regular classrooms
I've had kids throw chairs-and we still didn’t call the cops. We removed the other kids and had a counselor come in to talk with the student. A school safety officer (PD in NYC) was there just in case, but never as an aggressor.
That's a good question. It seems like the teacher involved was either a sub or the SPED teacher. It depends on how the district handles SPED. I've worked in NYC DOE schools and it's not handled the same between schools within and outside the districts. One school I worked in had a very specific SPED group that only integrated for lunch, recess, gym, and music. Another school didn’t have SPED classes at all, but had team teaching for the groups with a lot of IEPs. One of the teachers was the lead teacher & the other was the ICT teacher. It really varies.
Why would criminal charges against a special needs child HELP anyone???? The teacher isn’t even knowledgeable or equipped to have her in the classroom.
Well if this happened in any other state that’s not in the south it would be fine she would just probably get sent home but since it’s in the south and she’s black and disabled you best believe she’s gonna get arrested
Honestly, I would take my child away from that school. They are not qualified to take care of a special needs child. If anything, they actually endangered her.
The officer should be suspended. The teacher who lied about being assaulted by the little girl should be fired. The parents should sue the police department for the officer breaking the law & the school for the teacher filing a false police report
Yea, I watched the short and thought “she must have done something really bad” but no, just dumb, little kid stuff. I’m baffled the police were even brought into the situation. Like others have said - call the parents FIRST. It’s not like the kid killed somebody or even seriously injured anyone.
I agree with you. What's more?I believe that there should have been some kind of reprimand or investigation on the officer for his behavior and for his wrongdoing. This is why people in this country do not want to trust the police. Its officers like that to give the good officers a bad reputation. All of that was so unnecessary for this little girl. Shame on the teacher for letting somebody else make her decisions That just goes to show she's not capable of being an educator of children. Sorry but I have seen kids with mental disabilities seriously injury teachers and teachers assistant other students etc. until you can get a better way of handling a child with mental disabilities then you have to get the police involved. Just because they have a mental disability doesn't mean they are free to injure anybody it's no excuse. My uncle has a mental disability and he is corrected for bad behavior but when he injured my grandmother the police got involved. It was the first and only time because it was more of a scare than my grandmother could have given him. Once he learned that is what happens when you hurt someone he never did it again and he doesn't live in fear. And the last thing the girl said was I NEW I WAS BEING BAD but I didn't know I would get arrested shows she knew what she was doing which means that people treat her bad behavior without consequences because she is autistic which is setting her up for failure as an adult. She will become a criminal because she has no consequences. Stop treating the mentally disabled or in the case autistic children like they will break if you set boundaries, consequences, and expectations. They need all three of those things so they can fit into the world as an adult. If they are not taught these things they will end up in jail.
@@Ken-s6vThey don’t need police in the situation you described, they need emotional and mental health care. And anyone who thinks a 10 year old girl needs to be cuffed needs just as much help.
Children with disabilities shouldn’t be treated this way. There’s a reason they call children with disabilities ”special needs” because they don’t understand a lot, can’t always control themselves, and need special help from people who are specially trained to deal with children like this.
As a mother with an ASD child, one of the biggest issues is people having a stereotype of what a child with disabilities is supposed to look like and the lack of empathy towards special needs children who don't fit that stereotype. This includes staff as well. Not every special education teacher is a right fit for that career field.

So basically this is the equivalent of corner someone so they have no way of escaping and then calling the cops when the hit you. You can even hear one of the teachers/staff involved saying something that kind of sounds like her admitting it was accident. I don’t remember her exact words because it was quick and brief but she said something along the lines of “she(the little girl) tried to block me and my arm was in the way”. We have no evidence of what happened before the cops were called so the teachers and staff involved could possibly be lying or exaggerating. These teachers act like babies they need to grow up!!and learn how to act and get respect from the students ! When I was in school those teachers would have had us off the playground in a desk and quiet without ever touching any of us!
It's pretty obvious the teachers didn't like the little girl. That's when problems arise, I had a child on the spectrum. He knew when he was liked and was a model student when he was cared for. Thankfully almost all his teachers liked him, and I rarely had problems.
As a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, the school staff needs to be trained in de escalation and restraint. No need for the police unless the student and staff is in grave danger. The child needs a behavior intervention plan. The plan includes interventions and strategies on how to prevent the behavior and how to safely react. This behavior does not warrant a police officer. The staff needs training and how to respond to a crisis. A crisis plan can be written with parent input so when this occurs all parties know how to respond. This was totally unnecessary.
You are one of the only comments that is smart. No one seems to understand that learning disabilities require different methods of teaching and discipline. Using force and fear will not do anything positive at all. I have autism and struggled to control my emotions until I started therapy. I wasn’t one to “act out” but I was self destructive and self harmed. I had plans put in place to help me in school and college. I wouldn’t have survived otherwise.
I agree, but schools are understaffed and class sizes are much too large for teachers to also be behavior techs. We all have great ideas about what needs to be done but are totally unrealistic about the availability of funds and staff to implement them. I’ve seen children destroy classrooms and physically attack students. Then I’ve seen the other 30 students be chastised for being upset and afraid. It is literally impossible for a teacher to effectively teach and manage behavioral issues. You know that. It’s why we need people in your profession. But don’t put everything on the teachers. There are 31 students, not 1 student and 30 who need to pretend they weren’t afraid.
Then this child does not belong in mainstream classrooms until these types of events are not happening. They didn't call the cops because it was her first issue, chances are it was one of many. Teachers do not have time to deal with this type of behavior over and over and over again when 25+ other children are waiting on an education all because this girls family wants to pretend she is just like everyone else. FAPE and LRE apply to ALL CHILDREN, not just those with special needs. If this child is in a regular classroom, then she should have the same consequences for bad behavior that the other kids receive, even if she is rightly awarded accommodations for learning. Children with special needs can, and should, learn that actions have real world consequences. We do them no favors by pretending they don't.
I agree, but I would say that the police also need to be trained and pushed to deescalate situations. There was no reason for handcuffing the student. I think a sit down (with parent if possible) and at least a teacher, aide, or admin representing the student would have helped calm things down.
This is very disturbing. My husband is a SPED educator and he works with students who have done worse, but they have never called the police on a student. They have been trained to deal with those students in a way that doesn't harm the student but calms them down. They are even provided another room that isolates the student from others. Every incident is documented and parents are notified every time, but not the police. Conroe ISD need to understand that they can't just hire anybody to work with SPED students and they need to be held accountable for their actions whether she was diagnosed at the time or not. They should have been trained to identify traits of the disability.
Thank you! Like WTH?!? Working in the school district with autistic kids for a decade now and have had way worse done to me but you have to literally have the understanding of a grown normal functioning adult to know that mental disabilities are real and that ppl especially children on the spectrum most times have no control over their actions and it’s up to the teachers and staff to be able to know how to navigate through those difficult situations but having law enforcement called on a child is beyond ridiculous fr smh 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
@@TiffanyGordon-ol8gk That might be true with healthy, neurotypical kids. (But even then, there are way more options of consequences where you wouldn't need the police for such a minor thing.) If a student brings a weapon (gun or knife), then you should call the police by all means. But for throwing a little tantrum? 😂 Ridiculous. The consequences should fit the situation. Plus, special needs children often need completely different treatment to get the best results. That's why you need experts for SPED. And the best part seems to have been overlooked by the "authorities" though. The first teacher changed her story, and the second one straight up lied. The one whose arm got allegedly hurt said McKenna pinned her against the door, and her arm just happened to be in the door. She also said something about having been in McKenna's way. you need to evaluate calling the cops to "deescalate" for people who are autistic or any other version of mental disability, search for cops called for assistance for an autistic/mental ill person shot instead; there are FAR TOO MANY CASES OF THIS. COPS DO NOT DE ESCUALATE!!!!!! THEY ESCALATE. JUST AS THEY DID IN THIS VIDEO. THEY DO NOT have the proper training to deal with mental illness nor do they have the proper training to pick out a domestic violence offender, but they have the funding for their warrior training, but none of the de-escalation tactics people love to tote them being able to do from seeing it on cop television programming.
As an Autistic adult who experienced meltdowns in school when I was younger, this is absolutely disgusting behavior from the police and educators. That girl wasn’t being violent. She was literally being harassed, surrounded on all sides by adults who clearly don’t care to even try understanding her. They didn’t respect her, show compassion or anything. She’s a CHILD, an AUTISTIC CHILD. Which makes things like school, life in general even harder for her. I would know.
I'm an autistic mum of autistic teenagers and I agree! She was being surrounded by more and more adults, making more and more noise, making more and more demands of her. What she actually needed was to be left alone, given some safe distance to calm down. This can just mean standing and watching from a few metres away, or just around the corner but close enough to intervene quickly if necessary. I saw that she has an ODD diagnosis but I wouldn't be surprised if she actually has PDA! Pathological Demand Avoidance is such a tough autistic profile to live with. Both I, and my son have it. My son is kind, caring and loving but when he gets tired and overwhelmed by his emotions - for example, when there's teen friendship drama that is too much for him - or by his surroundings, usually the noisy school environment, or too much change, in one go, he can get very stubborn, and start to get angry and when he was younger, he'd have explosive meltdowns. This is a neurological response, not a psychological one. His - and mine, too, at times - brain is literally just shutting down because it can't cope. The demands are making his brain too anxious, too stressed and so it closes off to any further reasoning. In this video, every single action taken just increased the level of anxiety and response.
Yes, but it started with throwing things and physically attacking adults. The “harassment” was directly related to her refusal to leave the bathroom. Her insistence that she would do what she wanted - get her shoes - rather than do what she was told and change the perception that she was defiant and a potential threat. She has autism and accommodations are appropriate. Those accommodations cannot interfere with learning, threaten, or appear to threaten, safety. Being mainstreamed requires an ability to follow the rules. Everyone is worried about stereotypes and insists that they carry some crystal ball to identify real threats. Impossible! If you step back from your emotional response, it is so easy to see why her behavior could be perceived as manipulative. As there is a shortage of crystal balls and surplus of entitled kids perpetrating violent acts, how do you suggest people recognize the condition and how each individual behaves? What, other than officers being damned if they do, damned if they don’t, will resolve the problem? Do we eliminate mainstreaming? Stop having officers in schools? We must not assume a person is harmless - or dangerous - based on diagnosis or “group membership.” People who do not or cannot follow the rules are not easily identified by looks and no way are we returning to the visible identifiers of the past. What do we do? This child had a bad experience and I’m sorry. So many people have had worse, even fatal, experiences due to educators, officers, and parents ignoring and minimizing early warning signs. If this had gone the other way people would be mad at the police and demanding the parents be criminally charged. What is the answer? This child will recover. Maybe she will stop hedging her bets on bad behavior. Either way, she is alive to do so. Funny how hard it is to say “Better safe than sorry” when the situation hits too close to home, isn’t it?
@@GK-sp2un I hear what your saying but I also want to stress that unfortunately, no one has all the answers, I do not claim to have all the answers and I am personally well aware of how dangerous and manipulative people can be. I myself have suffered from people who others thought were harmless attacking me. I understand people suffering from mental illnesses and addictions are a big part too, regardless of age, sex, gender, ethnicity ect.. I am aware of this. I also do not hate all police officers, especially not just for being a police officer. I don’t support entitlement, I don’t support people using a disability as an excuse to be awful to others or letting people coddle someone because of a disability. Maybe mainstream school isn’t the right fit for her right now? Maybe she needs more help and more support or structure? I think thats a valid thing to look into. All that being said, the comments tone has come off as slightly hostile. As it’s replying to my comment I just want to say I’m not here to make enemies or cause a conflict in the comments. I’m here to share my experience and thoughts on this video. I am here to empathize with a little girl who was struggling and being misunderstood and mistreated because of that. Also I believe that a bad experience is a bad experience for someone. I don’t think that it’s healthy or good to try and judge or measure how one person experiences a bad experience or trauma against another persons to justify their experience as less then. Anyway I hope that I came across as clear, kind and thoughtful as I intended. 🤍 I really tried and put a lot of effort into my response. I hope you have a nice day.
Thank you for caring enough to share your story. What I don't understand is why ALL educators aren't being trained how to interact with SPED students. Given the fact that 1 in 100 children are on the autism spectrum this should be required when they are in college to prepare for teaching these kids. God bless 🙏

As an autistic person, I felt so bad for her getting arrested but the fact they didn't even ask what triggered this behaviour that made her upset. And It proves they kind of don't understand what Autism could be like in kids her age. And They could've at least tried to calm her, It was quite obvious she felt Anxious too. Man, I hope the school will get serious improvements and they need to do their job properly, everyone is supposed to feel safe.
Pretty wild that the officer refused to hand over the kid to her parent because "she's detained". Detained is not the same as charged. You can release a detained person to their legal guardian and you can certainly release a detained minor to their parent.
Me too! That's why I got ahead of it, and had a discussion about what to expect if something happens in school that the teachers feel like they can't handle. They assured me that they would call me first, and would never call the police. They gave me an odd look when I asked, but I explained why I was asking, and cited a couple of cases. One of them said, "Oh no! We aren't like that here." Have that discussion, it will ease your anxiety. 💕
unfortunately, this happens all of the time. And yes I do know that. it happened to my son and many of the students I advocated for when I was employed by Montana's parent training and information center (PTI). my job was to explain the law to the parents and to accompany them to IEP meetings. it was shocking that so many teachers and other staff are completely ignorant about special education law. Fortunately, there were a few staff members who were caring and good advocates. unfortunately, they weren't in the majority.
my disabled son, was abused in grade school, in special needs by being locked in a utility closet full of cleaning supplies in the DARK, and by being verbally abused by staff, and manhandled to be put in the closet. back then, you had no recourse to protect your children. he is PTSD from this abuse to this day, 30 years later. shameful.

That could've done more to de-escalate the situation. Imo, it appears the school staff were pressured into pressing charges or whatever in order to justify the officer's actions. *There could have...
I have a child who is low-functioning autistic. Whenever my child has a meltdown, I keep her away from others and have also asked the staff at the school/therapy center to do the same. I discipline my child the best way I can when she hurts others. With all that being said, parents need to set strict rules at home and teach their children what is appropriate. I do not think that it was appropriate for the police to be called, but the child needed to be disciplined. I can not stand when parents blame the child's disability for everything. This child said herself that she knew she was being bad. Again, I do not think the police should have been involved, but we also need to see how this child normally behaves at school before we make any real judgment here. We all know that the schools in America lack the proper services for special needs children. I wouldn't be surprised if this school was also lacking critical resources.
Make sure they are treating her well. In my high school, the kids in the special needs class were abused. I saw one get smacked in the back of his head cuz he sounded "gay." They slammed one who was blind face down on the floor. Some people don't handle them well even when they're trained to. They know they can't say anything.
Yeah, you really are missing the point. It's not about parents personal ideas of parenting or how she normally acts. It's about the gross actions of the school and police.
@@darlenegattus8190 you are right but parents still need to teach their kids how to act so they don't end up in a situation like this to begin but the school is wrong I will acknowledge you
@kellyanderson7624 I didn't say they should be fired. Just saying it's really hard to fire a teacher even when they ought to be. Some people don't know that it's not like other lines of work in that sense. Neither the teacher or the cop should be fired imo. I wish I knew how to get through to children like this little girl but I don't. But the world shouldn't give her consequence free existence and let her victimize everyone she comes across.
WTF??. This is how kids are being disciplined in school now? This is crazy! The teacher “yelped” in pain when she had her hands slammed against the napkin dispenser? Makes me sick.
She shouldn't be putting her hands on a teacher and she slammed the teacher's arm against a door. The fact that you are condoning a teacher being attacked by a student shows how SEVERELY mentally ill you are. You are probably one of those lunatics that defends criminals. Do you write them in prison too? Smh
She is a little girl! This disgusts me. How does this Officer think what he is doing is ok? My daughter is Autistic and thankfully we live in Australia and NOTHING like this will EVER happen to her.
What really happened? What triggered the child to act out? What supports did the school have in place for her? Why wasn't the parents called immediately when they realized this child was not cooperating?
Definitely not an accurate affirming term. Kinda stunts a child’s self esteem to say they have behavioural issues. Might be possible their so called behavioural issues could simply be be neurodivergent
As a teacher, I learned early on that you hand discipline and consequences within your classroom. You rarely ask for help from administration or other teachers because the situation just gets crazy. A poor teacher does not have classroom management skills or a connection with their students. Police officers do not belong at school unless weapons are involved like a box cutter or gun which endangers everyone. Schools seem to want to shift their responsibilities to the police but then again sometimes parents do the same with teachers. It does start at home and with communication between parents, school, teachers and students. Threats of police is not discipline.
it appears that you were woefully undertrained to work with students who have disabilities. speaking as a parent of a young man with disabilites whose school experinces were literally hell and a school psychologist.
Uncalled for , too many standing around instead of trying to calm the situation down, talk to the kid , reassure them , be patient, understanding and kind with autistic kids , it will go a long way …
There need to be cameras in these classrooms to keep everyone honest. Where is the evidence that the student assaulted the teacher? I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but where is the evidence? If teachers are not trained to deal with students with disabilities they should not working with students with disabilities.
My heart aches for her. To hear her say she was being bad brought tears to my eyes. Kids with autism can’t always control their behavior.

Sad.. Call her parents! Shame on those teachers. Filing assault charges on a special needs child? Ridiculous!
She had autism so when she supposedly pined the teachers arm Which we have no proof, she probably panicking. Individuals with autism often feel scared in social settings and they get overwhelmed/overstimulated easily. This causes them to act out, they don’t mean to hurt anyone they are just scared. @@diannabooth6901kids don’t listen anymore because there is zero discipline at home and at school.
@@JBRich1This case isn’t about zero discipline in the home. Different methods of discipline are used for children with autism.
Restraint backfires, especially for children with autism.
"To calm them down" is key, that's what the child needs to learn and most of all experience. Could your husband teach the police, they need it.
Not having serious consequences for aggressive and violent behavior is harmful to the child
(And police needs way more training focused on how to deal with neurodivergent people. This is why these kids get so bad. They learn their disability is a crutch to get out of doing what they don't want to do. They have no consequences because people will baby them instead of realizing they are using it to their advantage. Even when they admit they knew it was wrong, adults will say they didn't know better when they clearly did.
You obviously haven't seen the damage someone her size can do to a person. First she admits she knew what she was doing was wrong and didn't think consequences applied.
God bless 🙏
Exactly! And being autistic, being surrounded by people towing over her set her off more cuz we autistic need MORE personal space than regular folks
How can Conroe ISD Police Department, of Conroe Texas, be allowed, to not respond to the media, and public ----- and not issue a statement on this incident?!!!!!!!! Where is that community's outrage?!!!!!!!!!!
SMH... Ridiculous. Shame on the teachers and the officer. 😑
Did you even WATCH the video? The girl was being aggressive and ATTACKED a teacher. So the cop is just supposed to stand there and let the girl be violent? Smh
@@kellyanderson7624I watched it and I saw teachers and officers cooking up a story to justify their actions. The kid should have been taken to the principal’s office and parents called.
@@kellyanderson7624 They have Behavioral health specialist to respond for those behaviors. They also have Paraprofessionals in the class. Also, the parents should have been called.
Wouldn’t like to be around when this kid really loses it……..some kids need to learn hard lessons and I think she is one of them, BULLYING is not OK!

Not once did I hear any of the teachers or administration say the student had a form of autism. Shame on them all. Sue them all.

As someone who has autism, I'm really REALLY tired that American people believe that "deficiency" equals being on the spectrum. 🤦♀️

@@sonnysama16 Yeah, I agree, And Yeah, you can release a person who is detained but that is not even what he done, to be honest.
Yall need to realize that having autism is not an excuse to act dangerously. 😂😂
This is the call as a parent of a child with special needs that can have meltdowns and issues because of his disability I am TERRIFIED to get.
We aren't like that here."
Have that discussion, it will ease your anxiety. 💕
Poor girl. Already has conditions that aren’t her fault and these idiots treat her like she’s a criminal!! How messed up!!
unfortunately, this happens all of the time.
As someone who also has disabilities, this is what terrifies me most about cops.
Not all cops are bad ;)
@@julienespinosa159assume they are - an ex cop himself
my disabled son, was abused in grade school, in special needs by being locked in a utility closet full of cleaning supplies in the DARK, and by being verbally abused by staff, and manhandled to be put in the closet. back then, you had no recourse to protect your children. he is PTSD from this abuse to this day, 30 years later. shameful.
Every cop involved in this arrest, every cop who failed toni tervene at every level, every cop who cleared these cops in an investigation need to be charged and impisoned. A cop screamj g at a 10 hear old they are resisting is SICKENING.
Yes for sure
Thank you for this comment 🙏🏾
@@aryastark575I agree with you. Unfortunately.
@@darlenegattus8190 you are right but parents still need to teach their kids how to act so they don't end up in a situation like this to begin but the school is wrong I will acknowledge you

I hope the teacher was FIRED! Also the cop was FIRED AND CHARGED!
@@MarsBar1-r4h she not she’s still here at my school I also don’t know which one but the ones showed in the vid are still there
i agree with you. if they get cleared of any wrong doing. There's no justice. Vote against them during election.
Nearly impossible to fire a teacher
@@K_Riss1 So the teacher should be fired because the girl was aggressive and attacked a teacher? I'm confused.
Smh
Filed a false police report and posed in a picture with a wrist brace, probably to try and squeeze some workman's comp out of the situation.
As a father of a 5 yr old boy with behavioralissues,This is infuriating!
Behavioral issues what does that really mean?!
Definitely not an accurate affirming term. Kinda stunts a child’s self esteem to say they have behavioural issues. Might be possible their so called behavioural issues could simply be be neurodivergent
This is wrong how could you charge an innocent 10 year old with special needs.
Sue the teacher obviously she need fired asap and never be a teacher again
The teachers should be arrested for faking insult against a 10 year old child
This is heartbreaking, why not just call the child's parents or guardians?
Sue the school.
Those teachers should not have been teachers if they can’t control themselves. I hope her family is looking at a law suit against the school, teachers and the police.
