The "ontbijtkoek" is usually eaten with a (thick) layer of butter. That makes the taste more balanced, and the cake less dry.

So, on the Pataje Joppie chips. The mustard flavor actually comes from the fact its made with Fritessaus which actually contains quite a bit of mustard compared to the more sour mayonaise.

Cold chocolate milk you drink from Chocomel. But when you want it hot? you do not use Chocomel. You use Droste (yes from the Droste effect!) cocoa powder, fresh milk, sugar, and a knife tip of butter. boil the milk, when it boils, put a few spoons (4-5 tablespoons (not the American measure but just the spoons you use to eat soup) for one liter of boiling milk as I can remember), of cocoa powder into your pan of boiling milk. put sugar in it, taste for the right amount of sweetness, and then put the butter in it for the creamy taste. A lot of the older Dutch people will know this (Boomers, generation X). This was given to me when the winters were cold and after skating and playing in the snow, by my mother. Sitting in front of the fireplace, with a runny nose and hot steaming cocoa in my hands. first spooning of the vel, I do not know how to say vel in English. It was a layer on the top. Not great to drink or even eat. And if you think a bit of Droste cocoa in your mouth is wonderful. No, it is not, as it is pure cocoa powder, it is even disgusting when taking it straight from the package.

I've worked in Apeldoorn in an electronics store and one of the regular customers was a man belonging to the Peijnenburg family that owned the brand back in the day and they sold it for quite a bit of money. The guy had millions but lived very simple and he would ride his bicycle around Apeldoorn just to see if there was anything to do and have fun. Every day he made tons of pictures (he still had an analogue camera) and then brought it to our store to develop. Sometimes he would open up the envelop with the pictures in the store and would tell the best stories about what he photographed. He was a really nice older guy. I haven't seen him in like 10 years, I hope he's ok and still enjoying life.

Note that the unrefrigerated milk (including Chocomel and Fristi) has been heated up to a very high temperature (sterilisation rather than pasteurisation) so they can be stored at room temp for a very long time (whilst unopened!), but that doesn’t mean you should drink it at room temp. It’s best drunk cold (or hot in the case of Chocomel) and you should definitely put it in the fridge after opening it. Once opened it also doesn’t stay good until the printed date. After all, bacteria and other things will have gotten in so your sterile milk product is no longer sterile. Go by smell, consistency and taste after opening

Liquorice is an acquired taste. If you haven't tasted it from infancy it's hard to get to appreciate it in later life. Which explains why we Dutch like it and the rest of the world predominantly does not. Telling is the story of a British colleague I once had who was on assigment in Holland for a few years. He hated liquorice like every non-dutch person, but his kids - very young when in Holland - learned to love it. When he was back in the UK I occasionally sent some Dutch liquorice to him for his kids as you can't get it in the UK. Nowadays he seems to order it for them on the internet.

that's how i learned to eat it as a kid, about 1.5 to 2 centimeter thick slices with butter spread over teh top
well actually, margarine to be exact, it was the late 80s orso, and margarine was like at the height of its popularity,
so i explicitly am used to eating them with margarine to be spread on bread.
nevr even tried them with real butter, but i think i may prefer the margarine, if only for nostalgia reasons
i think it was mostly blue band at the time, they even started out as a margarine company, later a lot of others joined into the margarine business and shifted the market share, as is to be expected with a country that produces so much dairy lol when it blew up and it wasn't as one-sided anymore
you can just stack them on top of each other wit the unbuttered side down, and the butter from the top, keeps every next piece glued to the tower a bit even if the cuts are a bit crooked and diagonal-ish, you just reorient the layer if it goes too crook one way like a jenga tower when they're particularly bad cuts, and after you can just start eating from the top of the stack down.
the making and eating the tower part, was essential to the fun of it as a kid to me, half of the joy lol
i find eating an entire ontbijtkoek regardless of the butter gives you a bad case of the farts because of the way higher concentration of gingerbread spices on the outer dark "rind"/rim, ginger tends to have some metabolic effects lol

Yep, ontbijtkoek with a thick butter layer on top. So tasty!
For the borrelnootjes a hint: try those from Jumbo, the oriental taste. Blue packing. Thise are really spicey.
And do not eat so much candy, so much sugar... 😜 The Venco honingdrop is the one I don't like, but that is that I don't like honey too, haha.
Fristy is mostly drunk by kids. Sure it's sweet, haha. Better have the chocomel, that is for kids and adults!
The koffiewafels is a good choice, great taste!
My favorite snack? Milkchocolate bar with whole hazelnuts...

For the same reason that it's called Chocolonely, the shape of the pieces, when you break the chocolate bar, are uneven. So, when you do share it, no one gets the same amount of chocolate. Its to show how unfair the chocolate industry is towards the farmers
To avoid the sharing issue, obviously you can eat a whole bar by yourself... (which is what I would do)

This kind of ontbijtkoek is better with butter, I have never heard of anyone heating it though. Some put it on a sandwich as a topping. It is more or less the Dutch version of gingerbread, but different. There are different kinds some have raisins or nuts, those seem to be less dry then the one you had and are more comfortable to eat without butter, but with is still better. Fristi is indeed a kids drink, adults hardly consume it. Mostly we buy it for the little ones at a restaurant when you don't want to drink or they do not like fizzy drinks. Because it is very sugary it is for most kids a treat, or at least it should be.

The brand HERO was indeed from Switzerland but Riedel a Dutch company owned by Campina bought the rights.
Campina is also the maker of Chocomel and Fristi.
In the beginning, Nutricia was the maker of Chocomel but they switched to success too fully making baby milk and foods

I'm from Belgium and until recently I had no idea the sparkling version of Lipton Ice Tea was unique to this part of Europe (Netherlands, Belgium, and pretty sure they have it in France too).
The "Peijnenburg breakfast cake" is a brand of "Peperkoek" and used to be very popular in Belgium too when I was a kid (born in 1972) but I don't think they are still popular now. In Belgium it wasn't eaten much as a breakfast but as a snack after school. And you don't eat it dry but with a nice layer of real butter and sometimes also chocolat sprinkles on top of the butter. I personally hated Perperkoek because I don't like the taste of cloves (one of the spices in there) and it also has cinnamon which gives me an upset stomach.
Drop isn't as much a thing in Belgium as in The Netherlands but you can find it here (especially in the Dutch store chains) and it is truelly repulsive.
Fristi smells like yoghurt because it's a yoghourt drink. It is more of a kids drink. Never seen an adult drink it.

I learned about the uniqueness of our Ice Tea when I went to England and ordered an Ice Tea. They looked at me funny and came back with literal tea with ice cubes in it. It was horrible.

😂😂 Your faces when you tried the 'ontbijtkoek'. Eating it like that is way too dry. I don't eat it much now, but as a child a ate it regularly. You have to put butter or margarine on it. Lots of it!! Then it's great!

I’ve just gotten into your channel and am loving it! I’m a Dutchman living in Norway so your snacktests give me little doses of nostalgia!
Hero’s blackcurrants are grown especially for them in Zeeland. The clay ground and sea air is supposedly very important. Yes, Hero Cassis sweet, but it has a sharpness other brands’ versions lack. The Fanta version especially just tastes sweet in an industrial sort of way…

Drinks and candy don't usually qualify as 'snacks' around here. We tend to reserve the term for savoury bites though it also includes sweet food like candied peanuts (suikerpinda's) and chocolate covered raisins (chocolade rozijnen), and of course deep fried bites that you will find in the freezer section of the supermarket (bitterballen, kaassoufflés, vlammetjes, kipnuggets, etc).
BTW I don't think I've ever before seen someone with an allergy towards peperkoek. The spice mix they use is a variation of that used in pepernoten en kruidnootjes, or for you Americans ginger bread cookies. Most notably this includes cardamom, anise and of course ginger.

Hi Michelle and Alex! Firstly, my compliments on how you pronounce Dutch words that either start with a "G" or have a "G" in it. It quite spot on. About the Fristi, it is indeed a yoghurt drink and it is best when you drink it cold. It won't be as sweet as when you drink it at room temperature. On the Lipton Sparkling Iced tea.......we also have a flat version. Then the ontbijtkoek (Peijenburg), it is indeed a breakfast cake and I personally put butter and have a glass of cold milk with it.

    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger Рік тому

i think it deserves that praise, it's non-controverisal too, it's not like zoute drop or zure haring which are very out there
chocomel is just nice and easy going ,and has configurable creamyness, if you prefer to have them not as creamy, you just don't shake up the thing before drinking it, and it will be more flat and pretty nice too, if you like a fat head of bulbbly cream, you jsut violently shake it,
you can have the creamyness your way by how much you shake it, which gives it just that extra of a wider appeal
you'd be hard pressed to find a foreigner that does not like it, especially americans, just like most of them are all over teh stroopwafel,
but chocomel is evn more unobtrustive that's where i think it's greatness lies, they dialed in that shit perfect to be an easy drinker, and you'll find yourself drinking a liter of that shit in an hour without even meaning to, it happens all the time, every time
ofcourse as a dutch native i'm a pretty heavy milk drinker, so a liter of that ain't shit, but it's getting pricy that way lol
even though i don't drink it all that often, and opt for a milkshake instead when i really feel that itch because i so very much enjoy a good thick shake that actually hurts your neck muscles when trying to get it through a straw, i love them when they're on the verge of painful, so much value for money, so yeah i tend to gravitate toward the mcdonalds milkshake... give me half a liter of that shit and make it hurt please
if/when i do have chocomel around, it is getting absolutely destroyed..... lol it's great stuff
for it's at least an 8 for being so consistently well received, and it's not hard to imagine peopel taking a liking to it so much they would hoard it

Don't heat up the Chocomel. It loses it's flavour. If you want hot cocoa use the Droste cocoa powder.
The Unox noodles are a poor imitation of the Asian brands. Just buy the latter. I prefer the Korean brands.
Hero Cassis : that's a bestseller for more than six decades now. Still good.
Duyvis borrelnootjes : OKish, but the original Indonesian ones - like Kacang Pedis and Kacang Shanghai - are w-a-a-ay better.
Hopjes : quintessentially Dutch dating back to the end of the 18th century. But the Indonesian Kopiko are way better.
Honingdrop seems to be a bestseller. I detest it. The guys from 'Let's Get Boozie' compare it too "old car tires". I think they are being polite.
Koffiewafels : nice, but Verkade's 'Café Noir' and 'Moccakoekjes' are better by miles.

Ontbijtkoek: Don't heat it up but DO put butter on it... a fair amount... roomboter, not margarine (well... you can do margarine but roomboter is 10x better)

"Borrel" snacks are my favourite. Things like bitterballen, kaasblokjes (cheese cubes), different types of nuts (like cashews, almonds, peanuts, walnuts or a nut mix) and dried sausage. Also things like toast (the small crackers) with brie or a spread. You should try having a "borrelplank" with some wine or beer on a "terrasje" (outdoor seating area at a cafe or restaurant). That's the best!
