In Brabant we hate vla. Vla sucks
My brother used to own three Multivlaai's. One in Maassluis, one in Vlaardingen and one in Wateringen. He sold the one in Vlaardingen and turned the one in Maassluis into a Luciano. The one in Wateringen is still lucrative because of the many farmers from the Westland who are buying tons of vlaaien there. He used to tell me that the vlaaien are really made daily in Limburg and transferred by night to the rest of the Netherlands. But these kind of vlaai are specially made for the "Hollanders" because real Limburgse vlaai is much too thick for people outside of Limburg. I lived for over 10 years in Maastricht and I can tell you that real Limburgse vlaai is superior to the ones from the Multivlaai.
I'm a "Maastrichtenaar" ;) And you are right, the local vlaai from the bakery is waaay better than the average vlaai made for "Hollanders".

In Naaldwijk zit er ook een Multivlaai.. maar een echte Limburgse rijstevlaai ontbreekt in het assortiment, en die zijn zo onwijs lekker!!
The comments so far do show how proud and protective we as Limburgers are of our vlaai. Real vlaai comes from Limburg 😁 The big difference between "vlaai" and Limburg vlaai is the dough used for the crust.

By us in the Netherlands is a Vlaai no dessert but a traktatie for a cellibration or by a cup of coffee/tea.

As a native Limburger I have to advise you to try the Kruisbessenvlaai when you're in Limburg. You can't get them everywhere but from a good place I think it's delicious. You can also get one with an extra layer of creamy foamy stuff. That is quite a bit sweeter. I prefer the 'simple' one.

@@buncharted No not really but it’s a kind of fruit that most people don’t know and so it’s like the Dutch saying ‘Wat de boer niet kent dat eet hij niet’.
Creamy foamy stuff is het beste merengue te noemen denk ik. Ik vind een staekbaerevlaai mit sjoem / krosjelevlaai wel de beste aanrader. @buncharted it is goose berry season from june to august. So it makes sense to be more geared to summer season I guess

So yeah real vlaai is from Limburg, but as far as vlaai goes, Multivlaai is the best option we have around here. Tintelfris is one of our go-to's. It tastes nothing like mustard, it's lime on top, cream, raspberry filling and the bottom is Bastogne cookies. It's delicous.

Maybe you already expected this reaction but the real vlaai comes from the province of Limburg and multivlaai is a bit of a large chain that sells vlaai all over the Netherlands. So....what you've got to do is: go back to Maastricht and buy some vlaaien there. For example from: patisserie Peter Lemmens, boulangerie Van Weerdt or bakkerij Hermans. There you will get the authentic Limburgse vlaai or as I would calll it the Maastricht vlaai. Love your video's. and keep up the good work! :)

I used to work in an office where the most closeby pastry-shop was a Multivlaai, so anyone who had a birthday bought their pastry there, so i'm kind of fed up with Multivlaai. I used to like all the pies with cherries in them, but for the aforementioned reason, and i think the vlaaien have become really expensive there for what they offer, I only very occasionally buy them there now.

We had yesterday (Belgian) Breydelvlaai, is kinda a Apple-crumble at the office. Famous vlaai in Belgium are : Kriekenvlaai (Sherry), Breselienne, Rijstvlaai (not the fancy), Dendermondse vlaai, Bakkemoezevlaai, ... In any case, thanks for the fun video. They used to have Christoffel vlaai. A light brown creamy one with cherries and some chocolate flakes on top. I always chose it for my birthdays
Nice to see that you guys tried some Vlaai. My mom used to work in the factory and my mother in law still does work in the factory of multivlaai they also have the vlaai in all of the Janlinders Albertheijn stores.

Hoe eenvoudig ook, de traditionele vlaaien (inclusief rijstevlaai) zijn IMHO vaak het lekkerst. Verse kersenvlaai all the way baby! ;)
My favorite is the Apricot one or in summer the strawberry one, with the flaky sugared bottom with a thin layer of chocolate on the top bottom layer, it has strawberry kwark and then fresh Dutch strawberries and whipped cream. Sooooo delicious. No winter strawberry, but summer, nice and sweet and juicy
Eating 'Multivlaai' is like having a taco from 'Taco Bell'. It's not the original. Just made for people outside Limburg (NL/Belgium). You should try the 'Linzen'vlaai(cherry or abricot). That is the vlaai that is best eaten after one day it's made. So delicious!

My husband comes from Limburg, I from Rotterdam. For birthdays they always had vlaai, I had slagroomtaart. I don’t really like vlaai; it‘s bread with a sweet filling, in my opinion. The kids love kruimelvlaai though.

Christoffelvlaai is not an original vlaai. It originally is called Christoffeltaart. Sint Christoffel is the saint of the city of Roermond. The best Christoffeltaart originally comes from there. In Roermond you can get the original one (nowadays made in Venlo) even at the AH XL. Even though it’s not a vlaai, there’s not much more delicious than that taart.
I was born and raised in Limburg, but have been living in North-Holland for almost 15 years now. Multivlaai may not be as good as a local bakery in Limburg, but it isn't bad either. I'm a regular customer.

Abrikozen, Kersen and Crumble (Greumele) would be the standard at most birthdays.
Sometimes folks would get an assortment of flavours and the "gemengd fruit" with the kiwi would always be the last one left.
My alltime favorite would always be Rijstevlaai, it's so stupidly light so you can eat 3 pieces before you even start to notice how much you've already had. :D

Vrienden van mij hebben een Multivlaai filiaal, dus ik heb ook veel geproefd. Behalve de traditionele (kersen-, rijste-, abrikozenvlaai) vind ik de zwiteserse roomvlaai heel erg lekker. Vlaai met kruisbessen is ook erg lekker.

Hey my friends! So many vlaaien! It is a hard job but some one has to do it! ;-) For me the bananavlaai is pretty delicious. Vlaaien are pretty popular in Flanders too. There are some other kinds too. Like a delicious raspberry vlaai and different kinds of applevlaai. There is the "smurfenvlaai" and the "knobbelkesvlaai" and there is pruimenvlaai with prunes. And I almost forgot the rabarbervlaai - rhubarbvlaai.
Rijstevlaai should only be eaten deluxe. It's my favourite vlaai. it's the one I get everytime I go home.
Vlaai don't you buy in a supermarket or multivlaai. Only on a real bakery. It's a shame as we buy it here in limburg in those stores

Hai Guys weer een leuke video ik heb nog een ander ideetje voor jullie om te maken , jullie weten misschien dat Nederlanders van toetjes houden en deze elke dag na de maaltijd eten wat dachten jullie van een vla test waar jullie de verschillende vla's en yoghurt smaken testen bijvoorbeeld dubbel vla , chocolade vla , aardbeien vla , citroen vla , vanille-yoghurt vla , yoghurt kaneel vla , enz enz kijk maar eens in de koeling bij de AH of Jumbo er zijn een heleboel smaken ik ben benieuwd wat jullie ervan vinden veel succes

You asked for our preferences. Mine is "rijstevlaai met slagroom" (which you called rijstevlaai deluxe or something). Apart from the slagroom is also should have some melk-hagelvlokken on top. Second choice for me is kruimelvlaai.
Many people here in Zuid-Limburg often state that the vlaaien just across the border in Belgian Limburg a just a bit better, FWIW. For me in Maastricht, it's just very well here, no issues ;-) I understand with your home in Dordrecht original Limburg vlaai is hard to come by and you need to fall back to a multivlaai shop. FWIW Hema should have vlaai as well (at least it used to...).
The bottom is indeed not from standaard cake dough, but it resembles more dough for bread. See the Dutch Wikipedia lemma for "vlaaien" (nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limburgse_vlaai). In English the Wikipedia lemma is unhelpfully shorter...
Pedantic sidenote: Bavarois is pronounced like "baavaarwah" with the first two "a" being 'long a's' (think of the English "y_in_why" without the concluding "j" in pronunciation) and the last "a" as a short a like in the English words park or grass.
