    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  3 роки тому +11

      Yes. It takes us an entire year to create our videos. We do that in an effort to present the entire life of the plant from seed to harvest so our first time gardeners will know what to expect BEFORE they attempt to grow any vegetable. It is the least profitable method for a UA-camr but we are in it for the subscribers not the money👍

    Hollis, Nancy, & Bing Bing... I really love all of your instructional videos, I have been a loyal follower ever since I started my gardening and preservation journey 9-years ago. I have learned so much from you and I am extremely grateful for all you do for all of us. I love your new home there in Florida, it is just beautiful. I would like to ask you a few questions if I may... First, do you feed your plants (especially your tomatoes) intermittently throughout the growing season, or only at planting time? Also, is there a reason for having such a great distance between your plants and rows? I know that I have to allow at least 3-feet between mine to allow for the lawnmower, but you do not seem to need that in your garden.
    I am hoping and planning to expand my garden this coming year, if my health allows, I have been praying on it an awful lot because groceries are only going to be getting more expensive and I also do a lot of canning and preserving. I like to also plant enough to help the neighbors because last fall they gave me free rein of their orchard, so I was able to preserve apples, pears, Black Walnuts along with the wild raspberries and Hickory nuts from our own yard. I was able to make a ton of Apple and Pear sauce and butter and many jars of Apples and pears in just a very light syrup.
    I will be watching as many of your videos as I can and taking notes so that I can put together the best garden I can this year in order to preserve enough for our family and help as many people as we can during these hard times. Blessing to both of you and Bing Bing also and thank you again for all you've taught me and the world.

    We use bamboo stakes to give them guidance when they are young. To keep them on the right path we use rods. Sounds like proper child rainsing to me. Not brutal discipline, just guidance. That way they grow up straight and right and strong. Because we love them unconditionally we make this sacrifice.
    What a great metaphor.

    Hollis I just got my tators planted today. I haven't even started my tomatoes seeds yet. I will start mine in a few days when the signs get right. I plant parks Whopper been planting these for 35 years. Hollis I put the shells which is calcium in the year before where I'm going to plant my tomatoes. I get mature manure that's been cleaned out of my uncle's lots. He stacked it up and I wait a few years on it before I get it. Here in Oklahoma I use an 18-46-0 fert between my plants. I planted six feet apart and it will grab the the fert as the root systems get bigger. Like you I use fish.

I love indeterminate but I think I’m doing something wrong. Do yours get tall and if so, how do you support them pass your wooden cage? I love the way you explain things so clear. Thank y’all for such great videos.

      @@kathymccay9355 - In an earlier comment, Hollis said that he just allows the plants to drape over the wooden frames because it is not feasible to reach higher than his arm span/reach. Hope this helps. I have seen other videos where they do the same, only their framing is a bit higher than the ones Hollis built for his. I just love the frames he built, but with the cost of wood these days, I am planning to make mine from goat fence or cattle panels bent into squares. I am hoping this works for me as I have tried trellis and seems I spent more time tying them to it rather than enjoying the process, and then at the end of the season spending all that time to disconnect all those little plastic rings to be able to use them again is just so much work.

    After you burn stuff take the ash and put that in your garden. There is a lot of minerals in it. If you ever seen a areas that has burnt the next year there is massive growth. It's messy but if you water the ash down shovel into buckets and mix with your homemade soil you will see a big difference in your plants.

    Watching your videos is like going to gardening school! I learned so much! I love to try to bury fish in my raised bed but I got raccoons and stray cats that have paid visits to my garden before, would lime powder be enough to mask that smell over time? Is there anything else I can do to deter that? I lost squashes and tomatoes to these critters who dug up my plants before but I really want to try to bury fish 🤔.

    • @LLjean-qz7sb
      @LLjean-qz7sb 3 роки тому

      I would bury the fish quite deep before you plant your plants. The critters might not know it is there if it is deep enough! Maybe cover it with compost or leaves in the bottom of the hole over the fish with lime also before planting! If all else fails, use liquid fish emulsion that you dilute with water and pour that in the hole before planting and when you water (follow directions on bottle) good luck!

    I'm just surprised. I'm live in India and we use cow manure for all plants almost plus cocopeat. It's like peat moss but better. I'm still having problems with my tomato plants I'm sure I'm over watering them

      Add plenty of lime and it will stop. It is easier to prevent than to cure

    I just “found” you on you tube. I too use fish for fertilizer. Clean some crappie, fertilize the garden. Can’t miss!

    Mr. Hollis, when your container mix is in your wheelbarrow do you already have some black kow mixed in with that and then do you add an additional bag to that? Thank you for all your videos!

    New subscriber. I have a garden every single year for gosh 15 or more years and I still don’t know everything.I really don’t want to grow tomatoes 🍅 inside because I do not want those nasty 🤮 bugs in the house. Gnats in the house I don’t want. I’ve grown well gotten the tomato 🍅 plants from a garden store but I have problems with growing the seeds but I am going to try again outside. It se seems like a hard seed for me to grow. I’m going to try again. Anything else I could use ? A egg 🥚? I don’t have access to fish.

    Now that your living in Florida how are you dealing with Root Knot Nematodes? I live in south AL and they make growing tomatoes, peppers squash very challenging. I see you plant tomatoes in the ground. Are you seeing nematodes on your roots?

    I assume you are using pressure treated wood for the tomato cages. Any concerns about chemicals leaching into the plants?

    Do you recommend separating 2 tomato plants that are growing together in the same container or just plant both as is?

    You know they’re big when they’re bigger than Hollis’ hand. Great job! Hollis I’m curious. Why did you plant them so far apart?

    • @HollisNancysHomestead
      @HollisNancysHomestead  3 роки тому

      I wanted to ensure good flow through ventilation between the plants. Mine are a little further apart than what is really needed because I needed enough space to mow around them with my mower. My lawn mower is big so I spread them out.
