Hey Hickok, now I'm 78 y/o and in 2015 I purchased my first gun, a 686 4".357. Thought i died and went to heaven. 2 weeks ago I purchased my 14th. gun and it is the Rhino 40DS like the exact one you have. You have taught me all I know about guns, seriously--thank You. HOWEVER !!!!!!! I love this gun. I was sick for several months and did not shoot at all. This Rhino was the first gun I took to the range since 3 months of illness. WOW !!! The first 3 shots were dead center in the bulls eye, and most of the remaining 27 rounds were very much on target. It felt so good and I said to myself "thanks again Hickok" LOL !! I love this gun and think it is a nasty rascal. A few buddies really want to shoot it. Thanks again> Life is good.
Fired the Gun myself, I have to say it is amazing. The trigger is smooth and quick, you fire .357 Magnum rounds at the speed of a 9mm pistol and it’s a Revolver, the sights are clean (The 60ds has a Green Rear Sight), and I had no problems with it at all. Truly deserves more credit. It may look ugly, but I care more about performance than prettyness. Truly an amazing gift from the Italians
I thought it looked like this for funzies, just a gun designer being ostentatious and gaudy and dumb but I didn’t realize the barrel is set low! So the design has a purpose! I appreciate it a lot more now.
I'm a designer and find this gun more beautiful, the longer I look at it. It looks futuristic and I love the material/design choices. At first I thought it was hideous, now I think it looks cool. I'll be trying to buy one. The 6" version with the gold plating might make it into my collection. Just cool! 😁
i always thought the conventional design looked ugly, with the barrel on top and nothing beneath it. there are a few where the lower part, beneath the barrel, continues all the way to the tip, and that looks a lot better, imo. so the rhino design isn't bad. it is strange looking, but i think i like it.
It definitely would help with accuracy as long as you can handle that thing thumping your palm. Imagine one in .45LC or heck even headspace the cylinder to fire a 10mm. Perhaps the lower barrel could be implemented on future military pistol designs to allow accurate fire of rounds a bit hotter than 9mm or .40S&W
The Rhino was designed by Emilio Ghisoni, and it was the last thing he worked on before he died. Ghisoni was pursuing low bore axis revolvers in the 1970's and dedicated his life to making a better revolver. His advancements are exceptionally visible in the Mateba Sei Unica, a low bore axis, semi-automatic recoil operated revolver. Also, the Sei Unica actually does has a reduced recoil because it converts some of the recoil energy into stored mechanical energy because it recocks the hammer after every fired round.
Ain't that right, it's appearance has nothing to do with its efficiency. I think the four inch barrel is ugly because it's too short, 6 inch barrel actually looks a lot better
@Outlaw By Nature It might not be made in America, but they have some of the best support service (in Dayton, OH) that I have ever experienced. I stupidly tried to play amateur gunsmith and take mine fully apart to clean it. In the process of doing so, under tension, a micro part shot off and lodged in my carpet never to been seen again. Rather than trying to eff it up further, I decided to call Chiappa and have them service it. Long story short, I told them exactly what I did, and I was responsible for screwing it up. They fixed it free of charge for me, and I bought it used!
This man said himself that he is an old timer. He may just prefer the traditional style of revolvers, but he also said he will try not to let his biases get in the way. But me, personally, love the look of the Rhino!
I think this is one of the best modern revolvers, the barrel position gives it an extremely small to no recoil, so you can empty 6 rounds without missing a bullseye

Got the 6" version as a birthday present from my wife this summer... after she watched this video. So thanks for that! Up till then my favorite handgun was a S&W 686 6", and I still enjoy the heck out of shooting that gun, but the Rhino is now my favorite. Awesome handling, love the sights (mine came with fiberoptic rear sights). And yeah, I agree that the cylinder release feels weird, it still does. But I actually prefer the double action trigger over the S&W one, and I do most of my shooting double action.
@9:27 That means, it is more or less foolproof. I could imagine that getting the barrel in your face is not exactly fun. ^^ If you can choose the pain, why wouldn't you? ^^
If you think about traditional revolver design. If you ponder that designs tend to advance linearly. Sam Colt put the barrel at the top of the cylinder because he designed the loading lever under the barrel in his black powder revolvers. That simple fact probably kept people thinking along the same manner as other designs that were considered improvements over the Patterson. Chiapa stepped out of the box on this and there are tremendous benefits

it's ugly, a few refinements and it wouldn't look too bad but in the same vein who cares how it looks, it'll never be anything more than a novelty. and anyone who carries that for protection is just trying to look cool
Grag Reiser Yeah, but sometimes it's not that easy to see that clearly anyway when looking at the little viewer screen. It's when they go up on a full computer screen that it becomes obvious. Makes me look even dumber than I am. :-) It was very clear on the computer screen where my misses were going when shooting at the red plate. Weird that I could not see that while shooting. Just different when you are behind the trigger and looking through the muzzle blast and whatever recoil there is.
hickok45 Good point on both aspecst. Bullet impacts, in my experience, are especially difficult to see when shooting rifle since recoil tends to move your whole body, not just your arms. Anyway, great video as usual, keep it up and greetings from central CA.
I love your content! Not only super informative on the guns you showcase, but I am a game artist and I use your precious videos for reference on the parts of guns I want to 3D model so thank you!
Rhinos are for those who just want a gun they can shoot well with. As long as it makes me a better shot and works for me I don't care if it looks like it was made with Legos. The Rhino is the only revolver I ever loved.
Might I add the future belongs to those with Common Sense. And Common Sense says stay with Old Iron. That grip is hideous, it may work well just not in my hand.
+Loyalguardian6000 The designer came out with the mateaba autorevolver which also had a underbarrel and was a semi automatic revolver that was used in sci fi films.
I had to take this whole review with a grain of salt. I've had my Chiappa for several months and love it. I'm really glad that I bought it and had shot several hundred rounds before seeing your review on it. I love your reviews and normally find them to be right on target but you went a little over the top with all the negatives of how you disliked the look of the Chiappa. The review became more about the look than the function of the gun. I value your experience and wonder if I had seen your review first if it would have biased me on the Chiappa. Anyway, I'm glad I that I discovered what a great shooting gun it was before I saw the video.
drshaw187 One man's beauty is another man's ugly. What anybody thinks about the "looks" of a gun should be pretty irrelevant. Not really part of the review, just my opinion on appearance.
***** I could not care less about how it looks. Performance is number one when I am deciding what to carry in different situations. To each his own. Not really sure how a 1911 semi-auto or MK19 grenade launcher fit in to the topic of revolvers but I will say that the Chiappa is way easier to conceal than either of them. I carried a 1911 in the Army and it is a great pistol and I also spent a great deal of time behind the MK19 but neither one of them has the reliability of a good revolver. I've seen way too many failure to fire and failure to feed on both the 1911 and the MK19. Those rarely occur with a revolver and when they do it is usually as easy to fix as pulling the trigger again.
***** To be honest having shot both the Chiappa and good quality 1911 I can say that reliability wise I would go with the Chiappa, everything else from trigger to ergonomics go to 1911 but it still failed to shot 50 rounds out of 200 I've put through it and before you start the gun was already broken in. And as a last thing the m9 or 92fs are some of the most reliable guns ever made they will eat everything you put through them and unless you use cheap magazines like the Americans did it will run perfectly in any condition (within reason).
Alessandro D'Anna A good quality 1911 with a 25% failure rate? Lol. That pistol is junk. I have a rock island with 1800 rounds through it and 0 malfuntions, and in the world of 1911s mine is barely entry level.
I love the trigger, both in SA and DA on my Rhino 200DS. I'd prefer one of the larger models but they're hard to come by and I didn't want to buy one sight unseen. Found a used snubby in .357 magnum and I fell in love with it. Recoil management is great but after shoot a box of .357 142gr you really feel it afterwards. Was my first time shooting a .357 revolver and it was a blast.
I think the design is brilliant! quite flat on the side, more comfortable to carry but the best part id that the barrel is located lower and in line with the hand so it doesn't pull up that much, brilliant work.
I really like the old school look in classic revolvers, but the futuristic, weird look in chiappa revolvers is appealing to me somehow! I find them pretty awesome!
I've been looking at the his gun for a while now. Glad this video was made. Proves it's quality made and innovative for sure. I think different is a good thing.
+hickok45 The look has grown on me, there looked like no recoil when you were shooting it. That made me really like it. Ive been struggling big time with picking my next CCW. Ive watched about 40 of your videos over and over trying to choose. .44 is expensive compared to .357 but the regular revolver prices are great compared to some of the semi auto .45's and .40's. Wish it was easier to pick.
I was shooting mine 2 days ago, love it. Great gun, very little perceive recoil with 357 loads and nothing with 38 SPL. Is this gun ugly? Not really, just odd.
I'm surprised how many people think Chippa Rhino's are "ugly". I think they're bad ass. I have a Colt S.A.A. and I love it for multiple reasons, but all the same this is going to take the place of my Shield Plus as my CCW firearm honestly. Maybe with one loaded speed loader as well.
wow, that really does take out the muzzle flip. you can see it still kicks a little, but it looks like it remains close to target. Thanks for making the point that it does still transfer the energy into your hand.. and that it actually puts more pressure into your hand than the recoil of a "normal" revolver. that was a question of mine also. the energy has to go somewhere so if there's nothing to counter the actual recoil, it is just redirected to another location.. in this case, your wrist/forearm. :) In my opinion, this revolver is both ugly and not.. ugly compared to the way revolvers usually look, but cool as it's like some futuristic revolver. I think I'd enjoy owning one, but have a couple revolvers in mind that would be first on my list. :)
I love your reviews! I've just learned of the Rhino and prefer the longer version based off its appearance. While they are pricey, this one will surely make it into my collection.
Actually I agree with you; it is a revolutionary revolver with many benefits over conventional ones. If something is functional then it looks good automatically to me just like Glocks.
I absolutely love my Chiappa rhino 60DS.. smooth action..very accurate..sleek and the recoil is second to none for a .357 Mag. Id buy another..wish they made a .44 mag version! But .357 works just fine!
oldedude51 I forgot to mention i knew it was connected to the creator of the mateba. But i appreciate yall for informing me anyhow. I got me a Rhino 6ds and it is just awesome.
I actually love this revolver from design to concept. It seems like it would help with recoil, accuracy and follow up shots. That’s the reason for it’s...unorthodox design. I like it 😬 and want one now!! Don’t hate Hickok :/
Great video,Mr.Hickok. The 357 magnum has one of the worst noises when being fired I have ever heard. Even with really good hearing protection on. I read that is was because of the velocity and the size of the particular round being fired. I actually sold the best revolver I ever owned in part because of that. Had the gun been a 41 or 44 magnum I might have kept it. I really like this space gun looking revolver but I would much rather buy a heavy barrel blued Smith or Colt or even possibly a Taurus revolver any day.
What I've found in my few years on this planet is that beauty comes in 2 forms. The instant and undeniable and the aquired. Many firearms I thought ugly once, but years of watching have made me love the way they look... Oddly the old revolvers are of the opposite type for me. In my youth the semi-auto shape of today was king, all cops still carried 38sp. but that was about it. The Rhino is growing on me...
When i see almost non exisent muzzle flip i just start drooling like a dog. I love this gun! Yes, they have to work on design in area above the barrel, but i wouldnt say its ugly.
Watching you shoot those .357s I found it very interesting that there was so little muzzle flip. It is a very intriguing design that would be fun to try.
I just started researching these guns. I agree that the look is different and it took me a while to get into it. I love the look a S&W revolver but the design of the Rhino is impressive and from what I can tell it assists the shooter in the area of holding down recoil.
I actually think the design is awesome. Very cyberpunk-esque.
Agreed.
Yeah! looks like something outta "Blade Runner".
Except from the wooden grip.. Looks like imitation wood too.. A rubber grip would be so much more in style with the futuristic look.
akselp Definitely.
it is a rubber grip
I love the design, unironically. I think its great that a firearm company is stepping outside of the norm to make different stuff.

Hickock:this gun is ugly
Me: this gun is ugly
good one 😂💯
Same lmao.
Lol, sheep!
😂😂😂
*Your opinion is now mine*
Yep. You're old. It's gorgeous.
I love it too.
+Eric Finley Gorgeous? I must be old too.
I love the 60DS even more.
I think Colt single actions are a hell of a lot more gorgeous lol
Its gorgeous because it looks modern. I think more manufacturers should follow their lead when it comes to revolvers.
Why the hell is it ugly. It looks cool as hell.
I agree
it's ugly, a few refinements and it wouldn't look too bad but in the same vein who cares how it looks, it'll never be anything more than a novelty. and anyone who carries that for protection is just trying to look cool
If you're carrying it for protection, who's looking at it other than deadies?
+Underbottom Sandydown they are carrying it to say "hey look at my cool gun, I'm such a badass"
+anon amous Harley Quinn had it and looked badass
I like both revolvers. I appreciate that chiappa rhino went with the newer design
I don't know how John can keep quiet when, I assume, he can clearly see where the misses are through the camera. Props on the self control man.
"My impression has changed.... but its still ugly" - hickok45
But... But... You're WRONG, Tom!
Tom Mabon sorry my "legoese" is not up to snuff. My point remains valid.
I actually like the look of the rhino and I feel i could do more custom embellishment on it
Still a better love story than Twilight..
The only revolver?
Innovation can be too much for a traditionalist. I like the look of it.
You are correct. I saw a flintlock recently with a polymer stock on it and the "innovation" was too much for me.
Sounds like it can be fun without fear of damaging scratching the wood
doesnt make any sense coming from a guy that loves glock to dead, i guess we all are differe t breed
It's kinda like a girl bulldog, stocky and handsome but not pretty in any sense
Dr. Swiffel swaffel BTW someone actually made a flintlock with a polymer stock
I think it’s great that a company had the initiative to think outside the box with a new design. It’s not every day that a company overhauls a design.
THIS IS FUTURE OLD MAN!!! lol
Not for ME. :-)
Might I add the future belongs to those with Common Sense. And Common Sense says stay with Old Iron. That grip is hideous, it may work well just not in my hand.
@@hickok45 >>> "I say poe-TAY-toe, you say poe-TAH-toe...”😝😝😝😝
None of his criticisms were about functionality they were all cosmetic. Ugly women can be great in bed old man. LOL
That piece of garbage is for those who need attention....it will not last long...
It looks like the Blade Runner gun. So futuristic.
i think what people like is the idea of it. a gun that shoots from the bottom cylinder is so unique and interesting. its what draws me to it anyways.
Not to start an argument here. The gun the way it looks does look like straight out of a Sci fi, action or future movie.
+Loyalguardian6000
The designer came out with the mateaba autorevolver which also had a underbarrel and was a semi automatic revolver that was used in sci fi films.
toomanyaccounts Wow, cool.
+Loyalguardian6000 It was used in the dystopian futuristic movie, Divergent.
I get that ... Blade Runner 👍
+Loyalguardian6000 Destiny's handcannons are based off this and it's predecessor, the Mateba Model 6 Unica Autorevolver
Absolutely amazing design!! and very ingenious the way they made the bore axis so low
I love the look of it. Rick Deckard would feel right at home with it.
Alessandro D'Anna
A good quality 1911 with a 25% failure rate? Lol. That pistol is junk. I have a rock island with 1800 rounds through it and 0 malfuntions, and in the world of 1911s mine is barely entry level.
BigBeansM3 It was a colt governement model I think that It was quality enough.
funny I almost prefer the look of the rhino to the s&w probably because im a scifi nerd though
This always reminds me of the Blade Runner gun.
That's exactly what I thought. NYYYERRRRRRDDSS!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. This is one of the most amazing handguns I've ever seen in my life...
I think it's a gorgeous gun.
Is he being sarcastic? This is one of the best looking hand guns I have ever seen,
+Pre114 He's old school.
+Pre114 Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I've been looking at the his gun for a while now. Glad this video was made. Proves it's quality made and innovative for sure. I think different is a good thing.
What are you talking about he actually gave the gun a good review for the most part he just didn't like the look of the gun.
+Antoine Johnson Bingo! At least somebody was listening. Thanks. :-)
+hickok45 haha "I thought they were kidding!"
+Antoine Johnson I quite like the look..... and the feel
ilove the look 😍
Truth: I love the way the Chiappa Rhino looks♥️. It really does resemble a rhino 🦏 and it's beautiful.
Yes I agree with you a lot
I love hickock when gets visceral on the aspect and switches in a blink to full rational when talking functionality.
I think it looks awesome. One of the best looking guns I've ever seen.
I love the way it looks so much, I dislike any other revolver design now. For real.
Same
i don’t know why they put a hammer on it. it doesn’t do anything. i guess just so it looks like a revolver still.
@@cameron9322 for single action cocking
@@cameron9322 Great point
I was shooting mine 2 days ago, love it.
Great gun, very little perceive recoil with 357 loads and nothing with 38 SPL.
Is this gun ugly? Not really, just odd.
DUDE i think this thing looks amazing
Legit Christian me to
Forget the gun, check out this dude's accuracy!
Back in the day, right or wrong, guys with his level of accuracy were THE LAW.
I think it looks amazing! Love the classics but Chiappa made something truly unique and futuristic. Reminds me of the Dekkard gun in Blade Runner.
that's exactly what came to my mind.
This is one of the best conceal carry revolvers i’ve seen
Who would have thought the revolver would be redesigned, but it makes sense, natural point of aim is truly natural!
Yeah, I'm hoping they will also redesign the flintlock rifle and the Bowie knife. Both are way overdue! :-)
wow, that really does take out the muzzle flip. you can see it still kicks a little, but it looks like it remains close to target.
In my opinion, this revolver is both ugly and not.. ugly compared to the way revolvers usually look, but cool as it's like some futuristic revolver.
Love the futuristic design of it. Beautiful gun.
Damn, I wish they made one chambered in .44 mag.
No you don't. Unless you're tougher than Hickok45.
@Maddock fitzsimmins the 357 magnum has more recoil than a 44 trust me.
Jennifer Wilson no tf it doesn’t😂
@@rrzro3622 it may be due to bore axis but I own several of both and all of my 357s kick harder than my 44s.
Jennifer Wilson definitely hasn’t been the case for me but it’s not a big deal
I really like how it looks...
never seen hickok call a weapon stupid.. lol.
That should be quite telling then, shouldn't it?
Nah he's just a traditionalist when it comes to revolvers.
+Carlos Finch Hickok is famous because of his unbiased viewpoints. The thing is ugly as sin...
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Watch his video on the Hi-Point 9mm. It's hilarious.
I'm glad you did a review on this gun, been looking for a good resource to look at
It’s cool to see a revolver look different and futuristic. Im not a revolver fan but this I could fall in love with.
It kinda looks like a revolver from Borderlands
Reminds me of The Patton
Reminded me of the hand cannons in destiny.
Someone on another video said: A Dahl/Jakobs effort from the first game. I agree.
I think it’s very sci-fi looking and I like it.
That is a beautiful gun. Reminds me of the mateba 6 unica with its almost futuristic-ish look
Designed by the same person, I believe.
oldedude51 I forgot to mention i knew it was connected to the creator of the mateba.
I think this firearm is dope as hell ! It’s definitely a new take on a classic design.
"yeahhh really, Don't I? Aren't they gorgeous?" I laughed out loud at that one. You are awesome Hickok
When i see almost non exisent muzzle flip i just start drooling like a dog. I love this gun!
Yes, they have to work on design in area above the barrel, but i wouldnt say its ugly.
+tiortedrootsky See FAQ videos. :-)
I think if they got rid of the rail and made the front sight a bit smaller it would look great
tiortedrootsky
Looked like soft .38 not .357, zero muzzle movement. Amazing.
Looks like the Chiappa designers have been playing Borderlands too much!
Borderlands RULES! :-)
Great to find fans of BL on the H45 channel. :-)
JunkfoodZombie A bazillion guns, fits right in with channel theme.
Borderlands popped into my head instantly the first time I saw the rhino +1
ukrifleman Lol, I was wondering why I liked it.
Watching you shoot those .357s I found it very interesting that there was so little muzzle flip. It is a very intriguing design that would be fun to try.
I can't believe people think they are ugly... I think they are absolutely unique and cool!
I just started researching these guns. I agree that the look is different and it took me a while to get into it. I love the look a S&W revolver but the design of the Rhino is impressive and from what I can tell it assists the shooter in the area of holding down recoil.
