Earlier in the Summer I visited the Bluebell Railway for their Model Railway Weekend and I was really impressed by all the layouts I saw. One that stood out in particular though was Blackmoor, a 009 model railway of Blackmoor Station on the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway.
I was told by one of the operators that the layout had been modelled to recreate the station exactly as it had appeared in a photo that the layout builder had seen and it's certainly a really well detailed and very realistic layout. The atmosphere of Blackmoor is just fantastic.
As I'm currently building my own 009 narrow gauge model railway, this inspirational layout was fantastic to see. My own Gofod Tynn layout is a (very) loose representation of Welsh narrow gauge railways so as a bit of a contrast it's great to see the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway being modelled to such a high standard!

Lovely 009 layout, some of the best layouts I've seen are 009 layouts, it ran very well and it looked amazing as well 😀
Absolutely, I think being at the same scale as 00 but with smaller actual trains allows layouts to be more expansive and interesting in less space. Plus with all the nice new releases coming through from manufacturers, you don't have to reply on your own kit building skills to get a great running model now! Thanks for watching 😃
As time goes on I hope Narrow Gauge models get cheaper and more available, they are so quaint and fascinating.
I think we've seen that a little bit already bearing in mind that less than 10 years ago there was only one RTR model and was priced over £200. Now we have several models available from different manufacturers with some of them priced at around the £120-130 mark. It's probably not ever going to be a mainstream scale/gauge but it's certainly on the rise. Thanks for watching 😃

Very impressive, indeed. Especially the station itself. Note the varying roof angles and heights that fit together seamlessly. Also the backdrop seems to compliment the layout really well. Beautiful job.
Yes the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway certainly did have it's own unique style especially when it came to buildings. I agree the backscene blends really well into the layout to the point that I almost didn't notice it - which I mean as a compliment! Thanks for watching 😃
@@ThatModelRailwayGuy Thanks. The backscene is not of Devon but up North, It was the closest that I could get.
The buildings roof did take quite a bit of careful measuring and a few recuts to get it right.

Seem to recall the Borough of Lynton had up to five railway stations in total - Lynton & Caffyns Halt (L&B) then Cliff Railway had Lynton (top), 'North Walk' halt (now closed) thence Lynton (bottom). 😉

I'm hoping I can get my hands on some of these locos and rolling stock. One of the locos is basically a 2/3 sized version of the locos that run on a narrow gauge railway I used to live next to, so I wanted to make a model loosely based on the L&B.
They certainly are great looking models from Heljan, although I have heard mixed things about their running capabilities. Thanks for watching 😃

Superb model of blackmore gate. It brings the Lynton & Barnstaple to life.

I hope that narrow gauge models become more diverse than just the big companies, I also want to see more unique and rare engines made
I’d say that, while the larger manufacturers have brought 009 into the spotlight recently, the smaller suppliers have always been there. There are already lots of kits, body shells and short runs of much more unique locos available, they’re just not mass produced to the same extent. Thanks for watching 😃

I am a memeber of the L & B railway but live in a different part of the country. However that would be a great thing to do.
I’ve gotta say, this video is super relaxing and beautiful, the southern train is identical to the one on the Ffestiniog and Welsh highland railway, and the music is 👌🏻, I wish I had this

I love the Lynton and Barnstaple. I went whilst i was on holiday last week and I can thourghly recomend it. it is a shame I live so far away in northumberland. the model looks excellent, just like the real thing.

Haha, well they both run on the same track at least! Maybe you should build a circular layout with a backscene down the middle... N Gauge on one side and 009 on the other 😉 Thanks for watching 👍
What sets this apart for me is the backdrop.....how difficult is it to get it right I wonder?
It seems to be a photographic backdrop, most likely of the actual location in this instance. You can also get more generic backdrops which are commercially available. Thanks for watching 😃
Lovely to see the L&B Manning Wardale running so well without the crankpin issues, its annoying for Me as I had a Heljan Lew, and every time I went to run it the crankpin would keep on detaching so in the end after 7 engines I got it swapped for a Bachmann Baldwin, I still need a Manning Wardle or 2 at some stage, as I have got roughly an L&B Themed layout complete with the a sort of Freelance L&B Chelfham Viaduct, also where did you get those station name boards from ?
Hi Thomas, just to clarify this isn't my layout - I filmed it while it was on show at the Bluebell Railway's Model Railway Weekend earlier this year.
I believe I overheard the owner saying he did a lot of work to get the locos running this well and I have to admit I've heard similar stories about the crankpins which is why I've avoided them for my own 009 layout. I hear the Baldwin is very good though! Best of luck with your own 009 layout and thanks for watching 😃

Thankyou. It should have been at its dirst show back in 2020 but I suppose having and extra two years to complete it gave me more time to spend on the details.

Hi there, this isn't my layout so I'm afraid I can't shed any light on it either. I just saw this at the Bluebell Railway exhibition a while back and thought it deserved a video of it's own. I agree though the backscene does blend in incredibly well! Thanks for watching 😃

Pls fix the Earthquake damage across the track at 0:13, 3:33 et al.
If the layout is portable, being moved all the time, then just blend the
cracks w some cotton strands?
1. What a lovely layout of L&B.
2. What scale is 009 in terms of fraction? Like 1/87th, 1/43.5, etc.
L&B Fan from the USA
Firstly, this layout isn't mine, I just filmed it at an exhibition. But blending the joins with cotton strands wouldn't have the desired effect on smooth areas like roads and wouldn't be practical to setup at a show either. Remember what looks like a huge gap is probably less than a millimetre wide in reality.
009 is fairly loose as narrow gauge varies a lot in the UK but generally it's 1:76. It's the same scale as 00 gauge but modelling narrow gauge prototypes running on N gauge track. It's similar to HOe in the US.

I have been getting tempted more and more by narrow-gauge railroading not the least of which because most of the local historical railroads (in the state of Colorado in the US) are Narrow-Gauge (right in the middle of what used to be the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad). Unfortunately, HOn3 (HO scale narrow gauge) doesn't seem to be having the same Renaissance OO9 seems to be enjoying (of all the model railroad channels I follow, only one or two aren't working on OO9...)
That's certainly interesting that HOn3 isn't getting the same attention. I don't know much about the scale to be honest, are there many RTR locos or rolling stock available?
Here in the UK, the 009 "boom" was very much started by PECO and Heljan releasing a range of RTR products that complimented each other around the same time. This generated a lot of excitement/interest, which other manufacturers picked up and ran with and is why 009 has been growing ever since.
It's hard to say for certain but it's possible that if HOn3 already has a small range of RTR products, it may need a big release that would grab the attention and interest of those who usually only model the more "popular" HO themes. Just like the PECO/Heljan release did for 009.
There's a lot of speculation there on my part but that may be a reason why... not that it helps you much. Perhaps you should just join us in in the 009 world 😆 Thanks for watching 👍
Absolutely awesome but it seems odd there is so much attention to detail but then some of the locomotives have no footplate crew
You'd have to ask the owner of the layout about that but it might be that all the stock isn't owned by one person. From my own experience taking layouts to exhibitions, sometimes there just isn't enough time to get everything done and little things like this have to be sacrificed for the bigger picture.
