Playing rock and roll, blues and classical for most of my life, learning jazz-and becoming fluent-remains the greatest musical challenge I’ve faced. I’ve studied altered scales, chord tone soloing and arpeggios for so long, and it’s still a challenge. This is one of THE clearest and best lessons on the whole deal. Awesome! I like to practice arpeggios. I was doing some chores around the house and happened to come across a part of the video where you are playing a C Major 7:) This is absolutely totally useful since I often don't play certain positions because they seem impractical. 1: Learn the chords 2: Learn the major scale 3: Learn chord tones (arpeggios) 4: Learn jazz lines (transcribe from the masters or learn them from videos) to get the typical jazz sound Don't forget to take it to practical use from day 1. Learn your chords over standards, scales the samw, etc. Always apply it to a song after a few days of practicing "dry".

thanks for this! i usually struggle improvising on 251s because i think too much before playing it, i usually intend on planning it first, thinking about landing on the chord tones on strong beats 1 and 3. i guess i need to practice it hard until it becomes a muscle memory.
Good lesson, congratulations. A video about a whole form solo could be a good idea, I mean, three chorus of soloing, how to do direction in the solo, where to do the climax, how to start, how to finish, etc not in chord/scale concept, but in a form concept. Learn to analyze a complete form of a solo. I hope that I´ve explained well. You really have a gift in order to explain whatever you wish. Congrats again.
Challenges are here to Iberville them 😁 One step at a time. Practice only Dorian first, then the alternate scale and then ionian. Then bring it all together.
I am confused, you said that we should land chord tones on the beat (4:53)? But in your example, all the chord tone targeting actually lands on the 4and?
Yes, play chord tones more often on the beats. "Landing" means to have a tone ring longer than the others, or the end of a phrase. When you end a phrase, the last note is what stays in your ear, no matter when it's played. And in jazz we like to end our phrases on the off-beats (and), bc it has a pushy feeling to it. Ending on the beat sounds boring. So, try to make your long tones chord tones!
greetings from BC Canada ..........old rock guy here ( first live band i saw was the yardbirds ) learning jazz now ........good grief so much and more interesting stuff in jazz .......took your 4th position dorian video( thanks )...and have added it to the D bebop scale ....into ...E flat m pentatonic over the G ...into E m pentatonic with some C diatonic arps - with chromatics and enclosures and slides over the C maj 2-5-1 ...........and in this video i see even more stuff i can apply .......im just getting started and must conclude that jazz is never ending new information . Any suggestions ...?

This is a vet important lesson and will work a lot on that stuff. It's what makes all the difference. But first we need to find the correct scale and chord. At the university, I was busy for a while just to figure out what scale is the right one and finding it quickly. Well systematically approach all this and with your patient attitude and diligent practice you'll be there soon!

Hi Sandra; I really do love your channel and have found several of your downloads very useful. How should we handle the 3rd string, seventh fret D note (the fifth of G7B9) since it is note contained in the G Altered Scale? Is it just a passing note during solos? Skip it all together? Thank you, Joe
There's many scales, that can be used over altered Chords. The diminished scale features a diminished chord, which can be played over other altered Chords. The 5th is ok. If it clashes against a #5 keep on moving and don't set on it too long. It's perfectly fine over a 7b9 chord for example. Check out my lesson Diminished Arpeggios over dominant chords!

No, I did not watch any of the races. It's a shame, bc I used to race bikes when I was a teenager (I even was Austrian sprint champion). But then I started music, stopped sports and turned fat, lol.
Wow! I too used to race bikes. Started on the velodrome and transitioned to criterium races. I worked for Schwinn while in college and this is how I got hooked on bike racing. I didn’t achieve the level that you did. When I became a commercial charter pilot, I hung up my bike and ended up getting fat from eating airport junk food and sitting in cockpits for hours...😜 I retired in 2015 and now play my guitar in the Harry Selvin swing orchestra. Your videos provide me with great new and refresher training. Austria is on my bucket list to visit. If I get there, would love to meet you in person...Chuck

Do you use this diminished arpeggio up to altered scale down approach regularly when soloing over an altered V chord? Should I really focus on learning this for use all the time or is it just one example of how to find the chord tones?
Hi Mike, Diminished Arpeggios are one of the most used tools when it comes to altered chords. It's basically a 7b9 arpeggio. I will discuss that in a later lesson. So yes, it's very important and gets you away from noodling the altered scale up and down. The diminished arpeggio is the easiest way to create tension quickly, bc you can go from low to high and vc vetsa very fast. Staying too long on adjacent strings usually doesn't create good tension.

Question about methodology? Do you have all this in your head as you solo (chord tones, strong and weak beats, altered tones, etc) or do you memorize a lot of constructed licks and use them as you play. I understand the concepts but find it overwhelming to think about having all of this in my head as I improvise.
It's a mix of both. There's a plethora of chord tones and scale patterns stored in my brain (but I keep forgetting what I did just 5 minutes ago, lol) and I mm bests and off beats. But I also have learned many many pre-constructed fees like the ones in the video. Once you know them and feel how to place them correctly rhythmically, it's easy to improvise with that material. Well, not exactly easy, you still need to practice it many times, lol.

Hi Sandra, Question: what are you thinking when you are soloing? There are so many options to consider: tone notes, arpegios, scales, leading tones, etc. Are those considerations already Incorporated into "licks" that you've previously memorized so that you can "improvise" your solo? Or are you thinking about the chords and related notes as you play. I ask because learning the many scales, arpegios, etc. seem overwhelming for an amateur player. Thanks for all!
I always think about food when playing 😊 But seriously, it's a mixture. I've learned my scales and arps so well, that I don't have to think about them anymore. But jazzers learn tons of lines, where all this is incorporated already. Most jazzers never really play 100% improvisation. It's all just memorized lines plus some improv in between. The more experienced one is, the more those lines are being modified and improvised with. 1. Learn a new arpeggio (just one, say a major 7th arp). 2. Transcribe a line from your hero, as he plays over a major 7th chord. 3. Try to create your own line with the arpeggio you've learned, plus some scale tones and maybe chromatic. Try to mimic the phrasing (rhythm) of the line you've transcribed. 5. Practice both lines through the cycle of 4ths.

I started to play the Clarinet in an austrian church while i was studying there, how to read music and keep timing, Mozart and Hayden were ok, the Rolling stones or Prince well, fun... but Jazz Oooh man, that was a ritual for me, quite atmosphere, aromatic coffee round and listning carefully for each tone played in the improvisation part played by Jazz Kings, Jazz has always been the only music i respect most but.... never understood it though i wished... till now :-) Now my guitar playing sound better :-) Thank you very much ! In welchem Fall? Du weisst aber schon, dass die 5. Stufe alteriert wird, oder? Da passt harmonic minor nicht, weil die Quint und die Quart dort nicht alteriert sind. Harmonic Minor V (G phrygisch dominant) wir eher verwendet wenn man nach Moll auflöst.

Nein wirklich, du musst mir mit 2 Master degrees (Jazz guitar und Instrumentalpädagogik nichts erklären) 😂. Warum soll denn die #11 nicht passen? Jazz ist halt nicht so einfach 😊. Man spielt nicht immer nur exakt das was im Chord ist. Da gibt's ne Art Metaebene, was den Gesamtsound der Band angeht. Es geht nach Cmaj7, nicht nach Cm7, wenn ich mich recht erinnere (hab das Video zuletzt beim schneiden vor paar Jahren gesehen) 😊. Und G phryg. Dom IST die 5. Stufe der C harm mim scale. Wie gesagt, die spielst du eher wenn es nach Moll auflöst. Aber wenn's dir gut gefällt kannst du sie auch spielen, wenn's nach major geht 😊.

A music teacher would be best 😊. Bit you can start with all my chord lessons (Basic jazz chords, Tension chords, Inversions, Rhythm Comping). Then check the major scale and dorian scale. @@13thAMG I once concepted a video called "What is a cadence", but never filmed it, bc I thought everybody knows anyway. Maybe that's not true and I'll make and release the video.
I will never understand why do we have while playing to think (say) in D dorian or F (lydian) etc if the foundation is (in this case) the C major scale. As long as the notes are right within a chord why should it matter what "mode" we are in? Each scale has seven distinct chords but the notes are from the same fundamental scale. Now if we start using chords outside that scale then I can understand we have to think outside the box (of that original scale). Anyway, I hope some one could explain and justify the need for modes in Jazz. To me it is perhaps a naming convention more than a fundamental necessity. Please chime in, thanks!
But that's exactly what I explained in the video. Maybe you want to rewatch it 😉. A mode helps you to focus on the chord tones. If you play over a G7 chord in the key of C and think C all the time, you will eventually land on C, which is the Avoid Note (the worst sounding now) for a G7 chord.

Wenn du mir jede Woche die Untertitel schreibst und sie sekundengenau in UA-cam einfügst, gerne :-) Leider habe ich nicht die Zeit dazu. Und auf Deutsch habe ich anfangs probiert, aber da ist einfach zu wenig Publikum. In der heutigen Zeit sollte Englisch aber kein Problem sein. Ausserdem bin ich Amerikanerin, bloß in Wien aufgewachsen ;-)

I am confused, you said that we should land chord tones on the beat (4:53)? But in your example, all the chord tone targeting actually lands on the 4and?
Yes, play chord tones more often on the beats. "Landing" means to have a tone ring longer than the others, or the end of a phrase. When you end a phrase, the last note is what stays in your ear, no matter when it's played. And in jazz we like to end our phrases on the off-beats (and), bc it has a pushy feeling to it. Ending on the beat sounds boring.
So, try to make your long tones chord tones!

greetings from BC Canada ..........old rock guy here ( first live band i saw was the yardbirds ) learning jazz now ........good grief so much and more interesting stuff in jazz .......took your 4th position dorian video( thanks )...and have added it to the D bebop scale ....into ...E flat m pentatonic over the G ...into E m pentatonic with some C diatonic arps - with chromatics and enclosures and slides over the C maj 2-5-1 ...........and in this video i see even more stuff i can apply .......im just getting started and must conclude that jazz is never ending new information . Any suggestions ...?

Eb minor pentatonic over Galt? Who told you that? If you want to use a Minor Pent over Alt ist one 3 semitones above (Bbm) or 2 semitones beliw (Fm)

This is a vet important lesson and will work a lot on that stuff. It's what makes all the difference. But first we need to find the correct scale and chord. At the university, I was busy for a while just to figure out what scale is the right one and finding it quickly. Well systematically approach all this and with your patient attitude and diligent practice you'll be there soon!

Hi Sandra; I really do love your channel and have found several of your downloads very useful. How should we handle the 3rd string, seventh fret D note (the fifth of G7B9) since it is note contained in the G Altered Scale? Is it just a passing note during solos? Skip it all together? Thank you, Joe
There's many scales, that can be used over altered Chords. The diminished scale features a diminished chord, which can be played over other altered Chords. The 5th is ok. If it clashes against a #5 keep on moving and don't set on it too long. It's perfectly fine over a 7b9 chord for example.

No, I did not watch any of the races. It's a shame, bc I used to race bikes when I was a teenager (I even was Austrian sprint champion). But then I started music, stopped sports and turned fat, lol.
Wow! I too used to race bikes. Started on the velodrome and transitioned to criterium races. I worked for Schwinn while in college and this is how I got hooked on bike racing. I didn’t achieve the level that you did. When I became a commercial charter pilot, I hung up my bike and ended up getting fat from eating airport junk food and sitting in cockpits for hours...😜 I retired in 2015 and now play my guitar in the Harry Selvin swing orchestra. Your videos provide me with great new and refresher training. Austria is on my bucket list to visit. If I get there, would love to meet you in person...Chuck

Absolutely! Try to play your solos in a way, that the underlaying changes can be still recognized, even if nobody's comping you.

Do you use this diminished arpeggio up to altered scale down approach regularly when soloing over an altered V chord? Should I really focus on learning this for use all the time or is it just one example of how to find the chord tones?
Hi Mike, Diminished Arpeggios are one of the most used tools when it comes to altered chords. It's basically a 7b9 arpeggio. I will discuss that in a later lesson. So yes, it's very important and gets you away from noodling the altered scale up and down. The diminished arpeggio is the easiest way to create tension quickly, bc you can go from low to high and vc vetsa very fast. Staying too long on adjacent strings usually doesn't create good tension.

Question about methodology? Do you have all this in your head as you solo (chord tones, strong and weak beats, altered tones, etc) or do you memorize a lot of constructed licks and use them as you play. I understand the concepts but find it overwhelming to think about having all of this in my head as I improvise.
It's a mix of both. There's a plethora of chord tones and scale patterns stored in my brain (but I keep forgetting what I did just 5 minutes ago, lol) and I mm bests and off beats. But I also have learned many many pre-constructed fees like the ones in the video. Once you know them and feel how to place them correctly rhythmically, it's easy to improvise with that material.
Well, not exactly easy, you still need to practice it many times, lol.

how to practic jazz modes
Hi Sandra, Question: what are you thinking when you are soloing? There are so many options to consider: tone notes, arpegios, scales, leading tones, etc. Are those considerations already Incorporated into "licks" that you've previously memorized so that you can "improvise" your solo? Or are you thinking about the chords and related notes as you play. I ask because learning the many scales, arpegios, etc. seem overwhelming for an amateur player. Thanks for all!
I always think about food when playing 😊
But seriously, it's a mixture. I've learned my scales and arps so well, that I don't have to think about them anymore. But jazzers learn tons of lines, where all this is incorporated already. Most jazzers never really play 100% improvisation. It's all just memorized lines plus some improv in between. The more experienced one is, the more those lines are being modified and improvised with.
1. Learn a new arpeggio (just one, say a major 7th arp).
2. Transcribe a line from your hero, as he plays over a major 7th chord.
3. Try to create your own line with the arpeggio you've learned, plus some scale tones and maybe chromatic. Try to mimic the phrasing (rhythm) of the line you've transcribed.
5. Practice both lines through the cycle of 4ths.

I started to play the Clarinet in an austrian church while i was studying there, how to read music and keep timing, Mozart and Hayden were ok, the Rolling stones or Prince well, fun... but Jazz Oooh man, that was a ritual for me, quite atmosphere, aromatic coffee round and listning carefully for each tone played in the improvisation part played by Jazz Kings, Jazz has always been the only music i respect most but.... never understood it though i wished... till now :-)

In welchem Fall? Du weisst aber schon, dass die 5. Stufe alteriert wird, oder? Da passt harmonic minor nicht, weil die Quint und die Quart dort nicht alteriert sind. Harmonic Minor V (G phrygisch dominant) wir eher verwendet wenn man nach Moll auflöst.

Nein wirklich, du musst mir mit 2 Master degrees (Jazz guitar und Instrumentalpädagogik nichts erklären) 😂.
Warum soll denn die #11 nicht passen? Jazz ist halt nicht so einfach 😊. Man spielt nicht immer nur exakt das was im Chord ist. Da gibt's ne Art Metaebene, was den Gesamtsound der Band angeht.
Es geht nach Cmaj7, nicht nach Cm7, wenn ich mich recht erinnere (hab das Video zuletzt beim schneiden vor paar Jahren gesehen) 😊.
Und G phryg. Dom IST die 5. Stufe der C harm mim scale. Wie gesagt, die spielst du eher wenn es nach Moll auflöst. Aber wenn's dir gut gefällt kannst du sie auch spielen, wenn's nach major geht 😊.

Bit you can start with all my chord lessons (Basic jazz chords, Tension chords, Inversions, Rhythm Comping). Then check the major scale and dorian scale. Then check my Chord Melody lessons, that are labeled "easy".

@@13thAMG I once concepted a video called "What is a cadence", but never filmed it, bc I thought everybody knows anyway. Maybe that's not true and I'll make and release the video.
I will never understand why do we have while playing to think (say) in D dorian or F (lydian) etc if the foundation is (in this case) the C major scale. As long as the notes are right within a chord why should it matter what "mode" we are in? Each scale has seven distinct chords but the notes are from the same fundamental scale. Now if we start using chords outside that scale then I can understand we have to think outside the box (of that original scale). Anyway, I hope some one could explain and justify the need for modes in Jazz. To me it is perhaps a naming convention more than a fundamental necessity. Please chime in, thanks!
But that's exactly what I explained in the video. Maybe you want to rewatch it 😉.
A mode helps you to focus on the chord tones. If you play over a G7 chord in the key of C and think C all the time, you will eventually land on C, which is the Avoid Note (the worst sounding now) for a G7 chord.

Wenn du mir jede Woche die Untertitel schreibst und sie sekundengenau in UA-cam einfügst, gerne :-) Leider habe ich nicht die Zeit dazu. Und auf Deutsch habe ich anfangs probiert, aber da ist einfach zu wenig Publikum. In der heutigen Zeit sollte Englisch aber kein Problem sein. Ausserdem bin ich Amerikanerin, bloß in Wien aufgewachsen ;-)

Und ich denke das sind garnicht sooo wenige.....auch diese Menschen wirst Du über kurz oder lang verlieren wenn du nicht auch in deutscher Sprache was machst. Mir kann's egal sein .....nebenbei, es gibt auch eine menge Menschen, die noch nicht einmal Englisch in der Schule hatten. Also es ist ungünstig davon auszugehen, dass Englisch heutzutage kein Problem mehr sein sollte.
