-in this video i go at a gnarly piece of what is my best guess to be Spruce with a Mora knife to demonstrate that although we may all be cooped up at home there are still ways to whittle without having the ability to get materials and also a good way to while away the time
Doug I have been carving for a few years now but I’m still learning . I really like your videos and have learned a lot from you. Thanks and keep carving.
You are so talented! It’s a joy to watch. I used to sit on a stool in our garage and watch my dad make wonderful things from wood and veneer. Beautiful intricate designs on wooden boxes. I thought everyone’s dad could do that. Ofcourse I learned later in life he was an artist finding an outlet for his talent. I’m turning 69 this year and to think I have had 6 more years on earth than my dad. Thanks for bringing those warm memories back.this morning as I watch you work your magic.
My living room table just got 3 inches shorter. Hope wife doesn't notice it. If she does I'm blaming it all on you Doug.🤭🤭 Ps: thank you for another amazing video. STAY SAFE
Marks Man 😂😂😂
Hey Doug do you or your family raise reindeer
TY Doug ,we are all going threw a terrible time, praying for everyone around the WORLD 😇 nice to see you allways, STAY SAFE 😷
No matter the type of wood, old or new, your carvings always come out beautifully.
I believe you are “essential services” now Mr. Linker! Great distraction & very entertaining. Thank you!
Hi Doug, Brilliant! You now see what I meant when I told you I couldn't get bass wood lol.
I now have a gang of 6 little men and because of the isolation thing over here in the UK they are getting bored and squabble all the time so I've almost finished a policeman to keep order Ha Ha.
On a serious note, I hope you and your family are safe and well as I do to all people, no matter where or what age! There is a terrible time ahead and with people like you Doug who take the time to share their knowledge to help others is noble.
God bless us all x
Bass wood USA , Lime wood UK .
It's the same wood.
@@johnpin8465 Basswood is Tilia - also commonly called Lime or Linden (different from 'citrus' lime) and is a common UK tree or bush. Although, since Tilia isn't of any real use for anything but carving there may not be much of it in timber merchants though.
Tilia doesn't really exist here in NZ though (early settlers didn't bring it in because it wasn't used for building) and Basswood is really expensive to bring in here as those little precut blocks we see being carved here - roughly GBP10-15 per block with freight.
Thanks Doug we appreciate all the videos to give us a much needed distraction from our wandering thoughts in these times. You are braver than I am it seems every time I pick up a project to carve just some little thing without my glove that is the time I slip and spring a leak. 🔪🗡🪓🩸🩸🩸
You have a captive audience there in front of you and here in youtube land.
Have a great day stay safe.
I have restarted my whittling projects since the lockdown over here in the UK, you an Gene Messer gave me the whittling bug to start with many moons back, i am carving a Kingfisher as the main realistic project and also carving a chess set from branches as a fun project too but using my SAK hunter as the only tool allowed. Stay safe thanks for posting.
Hi Rokh &Roll, I'm in the UK and have just found Doug and I'm so inspired by him. I did some of his simple Santa's for Xmas this year and they came out OK for a first attempt. The wood for these came from Amazon and was advertised as Basswood and it was OK for a beginner. Can I please ask you which wood you use and from where you source it? I've recently purchased some Lime wood on line from a UK supplier in block format as it's cheaper than individual small blocks, but it is very hard for a beginner like myself. It is very difficult in the UK to source North American Basswood as Doug uses, which seems to cut so much easier than European Lime. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
@@robertprice7459 Agree Robert i dont think a lot of the chinese wood from Amazon is proper Basswood .im in the UK as well
Hey Doug, Thanks for helping with cabin fever. Great project. Surprising how many people don't do much with their hands. This will inspire them.
Doug, thanks for validating my first carving experience!
While at camp with my son's scout troop a couple summers ago I found myself looking for something to do while the boys worked on their merit badges. I had watched my first few Doug Linker videos a week or two earlier, so the choice was easy. I picked up a decent looking piece of pine branch deadfall from the forest floor, and started in with my swiss army knife and its factory edges. It took me most of the week, but I ended up with a little guy I was willing to display in my workshop once we got back home.
And yes, I did buy all the remaining basswood blocks in the camp store before we left, which I hadn't discovered until I had a couple days invested into my branch man. We were the last camp session for the summer, so I didn't feel bad about cleaning them out. I also bought a Flexcut knife after we got back. You can imagine my relief as I started on the next project!
Started carving/whittling in retirement. I'm 70 now; lordy how I envy you the hand strength and fine motor skill! Still, I enjoy it, and as you said, it passes the time. I've learned that more detailed knives is not the answer. It is learning to strop, strop, strop to a truly sharp edge. I've come to sharpening knives for my kids and grandkids....it passes the time. Thanks Doug.
Your always positive. Very helpful. I can’t count how many people I have told about you. Thanks for all of these. This is my therapy and favorite alone time stuff.
I am always fascinated by artists who can sculpt or "see" the shape in a block of whatever before they start to remove material. You actually inspired my son and I to get some carving knives last year but I'm still only carving "wizards". It's a lot of fun to practice though.
This is how I started, with a Mora, but with pine. Thanks again Doug ! How about a tutorial on the Old Salt carving you did on the beach ? 🤗
I cracked up when the words NASTY SPRUCE popped up on the screen! Great foreshadowing ha ha First cut: “ohhhhh boy. Not basswood.”
My first project was "So You Want to Carve a Bear" based on that video I went on Amazon and bought a Mora 120 which you had shown. I carved 3 bears, two Easter Bunnies, a little man, two chicken sticks and an ET before I listened more carefully to you, returned the Mora and bought a Helvie 1 1/4" and a 1/8" v-tool that made life so much easier. A total of 26 carvings followed. Thanks for kick starting me back to carving with this video. Great job.
That's not what product returns are for pfftt
Good morning Doug! Best wishes to you and your family😷. Thank you for bringing extra sunshine to our homes this morning. Coffee and Doug 🖒🌻
Doug, I sent your little boat video to a friend in England. She wants to carve, so, I sent her this video as well. I told her you are a wonderful teacher, and, you are!
Awesome! Was so happy to see you had a video to watch tonight. Made my Friday night!
Another great video as always. I really enjoy your videos. Great content. I have been carving for about three years and you inspire me to keep doing it. I am thankful that I found your videos. Stay safe during these trying times.
Thanks Doug! You're videos are a bright spot during this troubling time!
Doug my first medium for carving was scraps lumber I learned literally hard way can't carve a knot but incorporated it I always has a swiss army knife razor sharp ready to go ir my barlow pocket knives I always keep my hand made strop you show me how to nak handy after normally 20 mins i strop ny knife depends on how hard wood is too great content stay awsome 👍🇬🇧🐾🦊🇺🇲
Thanks Doug, you inspired me to start carving about a year ago. Very relaxing. I find green Birch works well for carving including spoon making.
I have been inspired by you. I can't believe at 59 now 60 that I have started carving. I am no where near your skill level and probably never will be but my grand daughter loves to name my little people. It has really come in handy being stuck at home with this virus all around. Caring away the time and enjoying every minute of it.
Thanks for the vid Doug . From a piece of nasty spruce to a cool looking little fella great job . Stay safe .
You added this 20 seconds ago...hahaha...You make me smile. Merry Ann from Minnesota
I accidentally got to your videos, and can honestly say I HAD no interest in woodcarving! But, your calm voice, without distracting music in the background, was such a welcome break from all the madness on UA-cam. It was so relaxing I did some binge watching! It reminded me how I was the only kid my Dad would let watch work on projects because I would sit there quietly and watch every move he made patiently for hours. My Best memories! Thankyou for doing what you do! I'm heading out into the madness to get some wood carving tools RIGHT NOW! You`'ll be seeing me around!😊💓🇺🇸
My 1st little guy was carved and painted two days ago. I used a full sized Mora knife.
Thank you for these videos
My basswood cuts like this. It's why I always marvel at the basswood you get for carving Doug. Nice work on this one!
Glad you are staying busy! Love your shows!
Thanks Doug, I needed this to reinforce the fact I DON'T always need a "Bass" type wood to carve with; just be patient & take my time!
Me too im in the uk i use mainly pine /basswoods ridiculously expensive in the UK
@@casper1240 I get ten bits for 10 quid stupid and the quality can be a bit naff
Thanks again Doug. Keep well.
Hi Doug, inspirational to take something everyone has at home and do something with it. Could you do a similar tutorial with a round branch? Would be nice to see for me who sometimes find nice round branches in nature. Take care!
I remember my first knife was a 120, it was all I had to help me follow your 5min wizard. Since I bought a lovely knife, thanks for the inspiration Doug...
Great job Doug. MY hand hurt just watching that. You still delivered the goods even with the Mora and wood handicaps.
Thank you Doug 👍 The sawdust and woodchip collection has been growing here as well. The key is not to rush through your stock all in the first two days.
Gramma here I have to tell you I belly laugh every time you and Sophie try to close off your live video chat it’s hilarious 😂❤️
Your teachings are easy to follow.I will be power carving also. Will continue to watch your videos. Your little beaver car.was the coolest toy I have seen. Jim's wood shop.
Thanks Doug...that looks like fun.
Hard wood for hard times/ he’s uniquely your style- 😎
Watching this in between chores- gotta stay busy and productive- thanks Doug😊 stay well!
Thanks again. I'm a spoon carver of sorts, but I am trying some little folk. Did a resemblance of a dog (started as a horse) just the other day. I watch some, but I also listen to you as I carve whatever. Good company. I have all the knives and such a man could want. Plenty of wood...bass, pine, horse chestnut (buckeye), and wild cherry. No virus in my county yet (Lincoln Co, Kentucky) but I've stopped driving the Amish for the time being and plan to stay home till the storm passes. My mother is 85 and the last thing I want is to bring it home to her. Keep the faith, sir, as I'm sure you will.
You are such a blessed relief during this dark time. Wash your hands and carve away. Hello from California.
I must say I think you could carve a concrete block you are just such a talent to watch and what a wonderful teacher
Awesome job Doug, as always your on top of it. Stay safe and healthy my friend.
Thanks Doug always look forward to ur videos this one took me back to the basics of carving the head wich is still my weak spot stay safe
Hi Doug, I like that little man. Keep up the great work. Keep safe and creative. Your talent will help us all get through these tuff times. A fan from Texas
Doug I had to fast forward this video because it brought back bad memories of an old carving that I made. My hands were sore for 3 days.
Hey Doug I really enjoy watching you make things, have a great weekend! 👍👍💯💯
Such a nice relaxing video. Just what I needed today, thank you.
I started carving with a Swiss Army knife back in 1973! LOL Went to carving gouges. In the late 80's I picked up a Mora Frosts 2-5/8" clip point sloyd knife with a laminated blade served me well until I picked up a Mora 120. When I joined a local carvers club they thought I was a little crazy. I always liked the flat plane carving so the Mora 120 always served me well. Now, 25 years latter I have all sorts of knives! LOL Some day I may even get a Helvie,
It just goes to show where there is a will there is a way. Great job with "what you got". I have some wood in the garage and a sheetrock knife-going to give it a try. Thanks for the inspiration.
Yo Doug
Watching you carve is like hearing good music.
Thanks,
Mike
Doug is the crafty grandpa you never knew you wanted
how about the crafty _dad_ you never knew you wanted? (-:
Great idea, Doug! Thanks for sharing!
Great one, Always have some spruce laying around. Take care and stay well .
Brilliant has always Doug, thank you.
Carved little man with your tutorial. Turned out great. Going to do another.
thanks Sir -- reminds me of when i first started carvin with you -- a snowman i carved outta a piece of 2x2 spruce with a 6 in bladed mora lol - turned out pretty well actually -- stay safe
thanks for all you do to entertain me.Wish I was doing this while camping,Fishing!
God Bless stay safe!!
looking forward to digging through all your old videos
I for one am happy to see you carve something like pine, instead the norm I was wondering how it might be to do and you definitely answered the question lol 😂
Fun video Doug. It sure shows the need for a glove as there was a few times I could see where you where really pushing hard and a slip would be terrible. Thanks, enjoyed it.
great video Doug, Thanks!
Your truelly amazing Doug!!!
I have a Mora 120 that, to be honest, I haven't found a use for in whittling as yet so I use it at work as a carpenter for all sorts of things, from scraping wood surfaces to trimming Lino - but this video brings a whole new meaning to whittling for me. I get loads of cut-offs that could possibly be used to make little figures but I've never thought of using them for that - and I probably won't again after the first attempt. I'll see how it goes.
Right on time! Thank you brother!
mike here ,I see that you had a face lift looks better now nave great day. stay safe . like your carvings.
Enjoying your videos Doug , subscribed .
Great job Doug! I have picked up 5 or 6 of those knives and once sharpened; find they are very good for roughing out but not for any finish work. Lost a nose on my Santa carving using
those thick blades last night. Thumbs up all the way!
Great work, as always. Watching you explaining what you are doing seems to see Bob Ross old videos when he was painting.
Just finished another or your rubber duckies, everyone loves them😂, thanks.
We are staying home like most here in California, stay healthy!🙏
at the end of the day you can whittle with anything... sometimes, much as I distrust a folding knife, my little swiss army farmer can do an amazing job! Peace! Stay healthy. Thank you for your inspiration and instruction.
Very nice video!! You are one great carver😊
Just a little tip. When you carve their shoes, chip away a piece under the toes. This give the shoes a little bend upwards, making it look more realistic and a nice shadow effect👍
Cheers Doug, awesome vid well done.
Love your videos Doug! Think we are just over an hr apart! Live off northern Lake St. Clair! LOL! Thx for all the inspiration!
Merci Doug belle sculpture
That's a great carving, but the pine I have broke in half. But I do love the gran in the pine. Again a lot of fun watching your videos, thanks a lot Doug
Thank You very much for your videos. I get so much inspiration . What you just did to the nasty IKEA Wood was really fantastic - you have some very clever knives😊Now I will stop crying over that I can’t get basswood and enjoy my european linden, Birch , hazel a.s.o.. Very best regards from Denmark 🇩🇰🇩🇰Esben.
Thank you Sir, I carve pine spruce and such with a couple of knives I made from sawsall blades. I did some snowmen from sycamore branches. I enjoy carving the “Christmas “ trees just 1x3 white wood whatever that is you will learn to watch the grain. The sycamore carved O.K. just had to let it dry a couple months but it was hard. Thanks again
My Great Grand Father carved birds out of small pieces of wood. I like the way you teach to mark the wood first. I have a carving knife but have been afraid to try to carve. I just need the ompf to get started. Thank you.
The wood I used to carve is exactly like that! It’s the only kind I can get my hands. Either that or pallet wood
Another great little person for your desk keep safe Doug Philip from Scotland
THANK YOU , Mr Doug ,
Great video, I always enjoy seeing you, whatever you are doing! Very nice little guy! Peace and Good Fortune and Good Health to you and your family! 😄🤩
Great job, Funny with the table leg!
Exactly what I needed! Thank u sir!
About 6 months ago, I started watching your videos, telling myself I have to buy a minimum of material to get started.
I should have taken care of it before confinement ....
Congratulations for your work.
Best regards from Corsica
You only need a penknife/swiss army knife and some branches to get whittling its all in the imagination. Stay safe
@@rokhnroll many thx, you too
!! Oh yeah, I'm going to take my bed apart so I can entertain myself je, je. No kidding :) ,
I have some spanish cedar and mahogany to work with. Now in Puerto Rico they have extended the quarantine until April 12. So we will be out for Easter.
Thanks for the video!
Take care!
Your videos are better than neflix!
Thank you for your channel. Thanks for sharing.
Wow just amazing. I'm new to this whole thing. I mean I just got two knives and some basswood. Thank you for sharing.
I like that you do from a block. I like your head and face these days. Like the golf ball stuff.
I've been carving some poplar and that stuff is hard and not so easy to carve, but it seems to take well to detail. It is some green firewood that we cut and is drying. Cool carve. Stay safe!
Oh Doug! That roughing out knife is my favorite tool. have several on hand. then comes the inch and a half one.
Nice stuff mate. Stay safe be well and keep on carving. Cheers mate from Australia 🇦🇺💯
Great Video. Thanks for doing the stuff you do. I like this blocky little fellow
Thanks for the video mate.I hope I can get a scrap of pine and try to emulate the little guy you did. maybe I can make him a antler pendant from the last video ha ha, Again thanks for the very instructional video you do do it well. take it easy.
Nice Doug, thanks.
Just really good when you bring the carving right up to the camera.
Great video Sir! Ben from Studio On The Lake
