As someone who studies psychology and has worked with dogs and horses my entire life, I have never heard someone so eloquently explain the psychological development of dogs as well as Joel. He is really pioneering in the world of dog training and canine behavior. This is really really good stuff and carries over so well to developmental psychology in humans as well. Keep up the great work!
I have never heard of a "fear period" before, yet it instantly explained a mental change I noticed when I turned about 12 years old. Then human brain development supposedly is finished by 25 years of age. I certainly noticed that my mentality relaxed around this age, for example I am far less worried about what my friends think of me.
@@WarriorsPhotoI’d say yes in the sense that the beginning of a child or puppies life is the most important time for growth and development! 1-3 years for a baby/child and 2-18 months for a dog. Just my feelings I am no expert 😂

This is exactly what me and my husband needed to hear! We have an 8 month old pup and we have been struggling with walking on a lead and recall and so many other things that we shouldn't be worrying so much about!! we thought that we were doing something wrong because the pup ignores us when we try to tell her to stop barking at the birds in the window or she is still stealing our slippers 🤭. Thank you. I was in tears today with my nearly 4months old staffy. Having lost my first best friend a few months back, I really forgot what having a puppy was like and I’m finding it challenging. I will stop stressing about training and just enjoy my little crocodile.

It’s going great thankfully. Added another puppy so now have a nearly 2 yo and a 1 yo. Crazy times lol still cry over my first. But the 2 new ones are no longer crocodiles, more like hurricanes made from bricks lol just so much joy.
I got my puppy last July at 10 weeks and he is now 5 months tomorrow. Out of all the video research and training videos I have been watching since before even getting him, this gave me the most relief. I always felt like I am not doing enough and every video seem like its easy and it will only take a a day (or 30min) to get the perfect dog. Momo is potty trained, will sometime know sit, down, come, leave it, touch, wait, paw, drop it, let's go, this way, go in [crate], uh-ah stop, and look at me but it isn't 100% reliable especially outside. Knowing that his brain is still developing and his brain is simply somewhere else, made me feel better. I will still do short training sessions but at least now I know where to set my expectation and give him more time to just be a puppy, at least until that 7 months start. Still need better recall, loose lease walking, no nipping, and no jumping to greets other but otherwise he is a really good boy. Thank you so much! I need sleep.
I am exactly where you are, I have a 5 month Texas heeler with alot of energy (of course).. lol. He is super smart and loves to learn, i was struggling with leash walking (so i thought), now i get its okay, I'm going to relax about it all (except chasing the cat) and enjoy my puppy!!! We all just worry and want our puppies to be well behaved, I think alot of trainers take advantage of this. So glad i found this channel!!!
Appreciate the refinement of the "sleep in the bed" criteria. After our rescue dog got over his reactivity (completely because of your guidance) he is starting to be allowed in the bed. I think it makes him feel safe and improved our relationship. Who knows how he was treated in the 1.5 years before we got him. Thanks for all you do!
Also important to note that breed also has an impact on the duration and occurrence of each stage of maturity! For example, a golden doodle, cockerspaniel, chihuahua may go through their major fear period between 8 to 12 months. Whereas a Rottweiler, Cane Corso, St. Bernard may not hit that same period of maturity until 18 to 26 months. Adulthood may not come until 3 to 3.5 years old for the big breeds! My helper dog Rottie hit his major fear period at 17 months and lasted until 22 months! 🤭 Every dog is a little different 🥰
Thanks for saying this. My Rott was fearful at 12 months. Now he is teenage rebel at 16 months. We are setting hard boundaries for him. A disciplined dog is a free dog.
I wonder if that holds true for earlier phases too as mine actually seems to be learning some of the basics early at 4 months. I've had him 3.5 weeks and he's already learning leash manners, knows sit and stay and look at me, knows no bite, leave it, go get it and is learning drop it. He's a mini Aussiedoodle. He's not 100%. He sometimes forgets because he's a puppy and they are very much like raising a child with adhd, with energy level, impulsiveness, and attention span, but over all he's doing really really well.
I can definitely confirm that my GSD was a little psycho for the first year, was ill-mannered in public during the second year, and after that he finally started to mellow out after that.
Thank you! I just rescued a 10-month-old, 60-pound pit bull puppy and it’s clear his former owners did absolutely no socializing or training. He’s in board and train right now with an amazing trainer, but I’ve been worried about managing him when he gets home. He will be much better after 2 weeks of intense training, but still a 60-pound puppy. This video put my mind at ease that I can pick up where the trainer left off, especially when it comes to introducing him to my resident dog, a 5-year-old pit bull female who I rescued 2 years ago, and have a peaceful home.

I can’t tell you how relieved I am to hear this!!!! My rescue hound is somewhere between 7-9 months and I’m realizing from this video she’s more on track for success than we thought!! Awesome video man. Found a starving 4 month old pup a few weeks ago. I think he’s ahead of the curve cuz he sits, waits for his food and does a lot of amazing things already. But good to know I shouldn’t be too freaked out about training atm. House training, sit wait for food and walking is all I’m worried about right now. He’s good at all those things already!!
Really appreciate this video. It helps alleviate the stress that I’ve felt with raising my new puppyand worrying that I’m behind. She’s 5 months and this helps me know what to really focus on instead of thinking all of it at once. You’re right I haven’t seen other content addressing age appropriateness and stages in the same way.
I really love this video, I'm just hitting 7 months with my american bulldog and he seems super worried about all strange things. Not necessarily scared but maybe, barking and huffing uncontrollably. I've been working a lot on exposure and afraid I won't have him properly socialized in time but it sounds like I'm not too late. When I got this puppy, I expected a much different training timeline. Potty training was the biggest struggle for months and took precedence over all other training for the most part other than some short sessions for sit, down, stand and working on making him ok with being handled (paws, mouth, etc). I feel like I'm doing the right things, always watching videos like this for timing and little tips and tricks to add to my toolbox. Honestly I'm finding dog training pretty fun although I also probably kind of suck at the moment. Your approach to loose leash walking has been a game changer for me. I didn't even realize I was doing it at first and was just excited about the success and then the light bulb came on later. Appreciate you man!
How long did it take to potty train? I have a 5 month old female Australian shepherd that pees in the same spot... We will have her outside all day long and as soon as we bring her in she will do it .. she's getting spayed next month so hopefully that plus getting used to the family and the house will help
@@InAllSeriousness88 it was 3 or 4 months because he ended up with a urinary tract infection that gave us added challenges. I work from home and kept him on a house line (dragging a small leash) so he was easy to grab and get outside quickly. Combined with taking him outside every 2 hours consistently and feeding consistently, encouraging water during potty breaks. That really seemed to help set a schedule that his body was more inclined to line up with. Schedule and frequency with consistent guidance seemed to be key
There's a Beckmans vid on barking & fear. I used his "I see it!"/'come" method on my maniacal Schip pup. She is a challenge and it took a LOT of work, but she's really good now.
Thank you so much for this video. I saved it to my library to watch and rewatch. It’s the only video I’ve seen where the trainer breaks down puppy stage so clearly. I wish I’d had it sooner. My 11 month old golden has always been fearful. She will not walk on our street, but will walk trails. She’s suddenly beginning to be willing to try new things, things she’s always been afraid of, like the car and looking in boxes etc. It’s like she suddenly understands that we’re not trying to hurt her. The walks are even getting a bit better, when we can get her to exit the driveway. Once she gets out of the driveway, she has a great time. From what you said, we have another month of exposure time. I’m looking forward to getting her out more places. Thank you! You really are the best!

I wish I had seen this in May. I have an almost 5-month dog and he's a little shark/alligator right now (I saw your video on working with that) I have been so stressed that I was going to have a dog that I could not live with, that I had already messed him up for life and now I realize he's right where he's supposed to be and I'm doing what I am supposed to do. Thank you so very much. I've had a Golden before, I didn't have the same issues because I had other dogs at home and they took care of the biting issue, so it is new to me this time around. He is such a sweet dog otherwise, and I do have him on my bed with me but he is crated because I'm 67 now, and cannot take being shark-bait...but we are within inches of each other on the bed, and I'm grateful I did that part right. I'm 77 and have a 10 mo lab. I wore leather work gloves until the puppy teeth fell out, as well as working on no-bite, ok to licking, chew this not that.

Please check out select-a-dog for a list of questions to answer honestly and it spits out 5-7 breeds to choose from depending on your lifestyle. Keep in mind if you have small kids it's usually best to choose a more popular breed just because of stranger danger. More people will be asking questions if it's an unusual breed. Also, if you have an active family, do you want an active dog because you're going to be taking the dog everywhere or do you need a dog that can just chill with you once you get home? If you get a long haired dog or a dog that needs to be groomed, that's an additional expense every 6 - 8 weeks. Long haired dogs need to be brushed usually daily. My husband is a GSD person, but I can't take the long hair and both of us hate to vacuum. You could vacuum 5x/week and you would still find hair. Plus, if you take the dog in the car, their hair is all over the car - just something to keep in mind. We have Dobes, but my Dad used to raise them back when the first Magnum was popular, so I knew what we were getting into. I like my Dobes big. My boys are 100lbs. One is a therapy dog, the other one just graduated Intro to Nose Work. Check out your local dog club, get the kids involved if old enough - 4H, FFA possibly- some groups offer obedience classes, handling (potential scholarships, etc), maybe even Agility - check it out. Susan Garrett, a world class Agility trainer, videos are particularly helpful as well, especially if you have kids. Everything is on you tube for free. Hope that helps.

We have a four month old Rough Collie. She's my fourth Collie and I sort of forgot what it's like to have a puppy. Her predecessor recently passed at 11 years old. Thank you for this! I feel like less of a failure! I fostered a litter of 8 week old puppies and all dreams of being perfect went to hell! I ended up keeping the girl. She was so distraught when her brothers were adopted one by one that I let her sleep with us. She is just about 3 months and she sleeps with us and I have felt so guilty about it. But we sleep through the night - everything I have read or watched has said she should sleep in her crate and I am total failure. But she makes it through the night without an accident and all three of us get a good night’s sleep. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Thank you so much for this video about age appropriateness and developmental milestones. My dog is turned 1 soon and I wish I'd seen this video earlier. She did Basic Obedience classes at 9 to 10 months. There was a noticeable surge in her strength and stamina and bursts of energy around 11 months so i started running with her more and simultaneously being a whole lot more focused on getting her to walk nicely on leash and not pulling, charging, wandering around. Training her to walk nicely is actually how I found your channel only just this week! Your channel is very helpful. I watched your loose leash walking videos and tried it yesterday and it worked. Thank you very much for these videos!
This video makes a lot of sense, other videos always start all the training from 2/3 months, so your expectation as a novice in training is to push all as soon as possible. Nobody gives any type of timeframe for stuff. Thanks a lot for this video. Made me feel better about our 5 moth puppy that only wants to play and not taking training too serious.

I have a 8.5 month old Malinois/Irish Setter Mix and I've been going out of my mind with her being scared to the point of shaking and covering up in pillows of all sounds while in our home/condo in Chicago. I have never re-homed and hate when I see someone re-homing their dog but I had thoughts of doing so (I don't think I could) until I watched this video. Total Game changer and I feel like a jerk for getting so aggraviated with this situation. It's been a tough raising, August 1st, I had to let my 18.5 year old go. I brought Riley in knowing his clock was running out of ticks, they were instant friends from April and it was a great thing to watch his finally months with her and the happiness Riley brought him. I've been working so hard to train her - leash training and basic commands. She's come a long way, but I've been so frustrated with how easily I lose her attention. I needed to know exactly what Joel went over here, and following his advice my dog is the easiest I've ever had. She only has 2 big no's. She can't run into the street, and she can't eat poop. A breeder of Standard Xolos sold me a puppy saying he was 8 weeks. Looked at the paper when she left ...he was 7 weeks. After listening to this video of yours he slept in my bed(he is now 10 weeks) He was not mouthy when I put his leash on to take him out this morning!!❤ He really was an alligator mouth and constantly otherwise during the day. Even though he has many chew sticks and bones and tugging toys! You are truly a miracle in your ideas and thoughts! God bless you! All my neighbors will change their mind about my shark now!😢😊❤ ( He was crazy mouthy between the 7 weeks and 10, everyone said your going to have to get rid of that dog, this changed his life and mine!

Hi Joel! This video was a HUGE eyeopener for me. I have a 7 month old Doberman/Labrador, and I've been watching training videos...all walking away feeling like I am doing things wrong while feeling quite defeated. I've been very discouraged. I usually see videos of trainers using puppies/dogs that are already trained, and it makes me feel like my puppy is completely out of control, and he'll never be like one of them. This video let me know that my puppy isn't bad; his brain is going through changes at different stages. I now know what I can expect from my puppy as he grows, and that I can relax a bit, and just enjoy him right now. I already have him doing some basic commands, and he's learning so fast! Thank you for these videos. They are game changers!

My Charlotte is now 20 weeks she loves to jump even up on me when I first arrive home from work we immediately go outside after potty and she jumps a d pulls on homemade zip line tug rope for about 45 min before I even touch her to give her a chance to burn energy we have been practicing learning not to bite me I place my finger in her mouth that she bite her own lip biting my hand is decreased greatly still she need reminders I a. Glad I found your videos I want to be a le to bring her to visit elderly in nursing home I work I was getting discouraged thinking I simply not doing something correct because she is not a calm lab pup. Now I am encouraged and going g to continue allowing her to go through these stages and continue to watch videos to learn to direct her through these stages Thank You

This video just saved my sanity after a last minute rescue of a puppy in awful conditions. I was getting so frustrated because my other dog is so well behaved. I could tell she knew she was doing something wrong but almost took joy in it like it was a game. Thinking of her in terms of a toddler is a game changer for my patience.

THANK YOU. This really was such an important and helpful video. I watch a lot of UA-cam Dog Trainers, and your videos are my absolute favorite. It made me feel much better about what to expect right now with a 9mo old GSP. Just to put things in perspective, I thought my wife’s Weimaraner/lab mix was a little hyper, but she doesn’t hold a candle to the GSP. I have Fi collars on both of them and the Weimaraner averages around 8k-12k steps/day and the GSP is right around 33k/day. It’s rare he is ever under 25k steps. The BEST tool I have right now is an electric scooter. Thanks again for sharing and taking the time to explain everything you do!

I'm so grateful to have found this channel. I went to a private training session with someone to just get some guidance and it was just so regimented. My German Shepherd is only 10 weeks old. I've already had him for just over a month because he came to me from terrible circumstances at 5.5 weeks. He a pretty good little (big!) dude. Already has pretty decent recall. He can sit. He can lay down. He walks brilliantly with a leash, and pretty decently without one (for now). I've been doing mini training sessions with him since he came to me. But the trainer said he would never see us again unless we used a prong collar. My dog picked up his leash with his mouth and he ripped it out of his teeth. It was really hardcore. He has Malinois, which is why I went to him. But I want my Shep to have fun. I want to teach him cool agility things when he's ready. It's like he forgot that this is a companion animal that I plan to take hikes with, and camping etc. I wish you were local to me because I would go to you for guidance periodically.

Glad you said this I just got a 5-6mo old German shepherd. Was focusing on leash reactivity but not working so well and now I know why. Thankfully he’s not terrible at it. The slightest pull most times is enough for him to come back to me.
I’d really appreciate another video with more detail on how to practice management of our dogs while going through these phases. It’s easy to say get them out for hikes or to the beach etc but when they are getting bigger and don’t have a lot of training on them it gets increasingly difficult to take them certain places because the more they rehearse negative behaviours (pulling, barking or getting distracted by other dogs etc) the harder it can be to inhibit those later on. How do we best set ourselves up for healthy exposure outings with our young dogs(especially the 5mth-12mth phase) without developing bad habits and how do we deal with the inevitable scenarios that occur with other dogs or people without it causing negative impressions on our pups....like how do we manage our pups when they lose their mind because they just want to go play with the dog that just walked in the pet store or they meet on the trail? Is daycare a good or bad idea during this time or does it depend on the dog? What are some good relationship building exercises to do with our puppies before “real training begins” and what are things that could be damaging to that relationship if done too soon? I have a 10 month old pit bull. And these are the words I need to hear becausssseeeee….. I was about to give up. good to know I have been on the right track. Wow finally a video to help me train my 8 month old boston terrier. I am definitely expecting too much from her. She lacks complete focus on certain things like sit. She will stay, leave it, laydown. She is a hardcore leash puller on walks right now. I can't wait until she gets older to actually be able to get the other stuff like sit and nonpulling. Thank you for this video.

As someone who studies psychology and has worked with dogs and horses my entire life, I have never heard someone so eloquently explain the psychological development of dogs as well as Joel. He is really pioneering in the world of dog training and canine behavior. This is really really good stuff and carries over so well to developmental psychology in humans as well. I have never heard of a "fear period" before, yet it instantly explained a mental change I noticed when I turned about 12 years old. Then human brain development supposedly is finished by 25 years of age. I certainly noticed that my mentality relaxed around this age, for example I am far less worried about what my friends think of me.
@@WarriorsPhotoI’d say yes in the sense that the beginning of a child or puppies life is the most important time for growth and development! 1-3 years for a baby/child and 2-18 months for a dog. Just my feelings I am no expert 😂

We have an 8 month old pup and we have been struggling with walking on a lead and recall and so many other things that we shouldn't be worrying so much about!! we thought that we were doing something wrong because the pup ignores us when we try to tell her to stop barking at the birds in the window or she is still stealing our slippers 🤭.

Thank you. I was in tears today with my nearly 4months old staffy. Having lost my first best friend a few months back, I really forgot what having a puppy was like and I’m finding it challenging. I will stop stressing about training and just enjoy my little crocodile.

It’s going great thankfully. Added another puppy so now have a nearly 2 yo and a 1 yo. Crazy times lol still cry over my first. But the 2 new ones are no longer crocodiles, more like hurricanes made from bricks lol just so much joy.

I got my puppy last July at 10 weeks and he is now 5 months tomorrow. Out of all the video research and training videos I have been watching since before even getting him, this gave me the most relief. I always felt like I am not doing enough and every video seem like its easy and it will only take a a day (or 30min) to get the perfect dog. Momo is potty trained, will sometime know sit, down, come, leave it, touch, wait, paw, drop it, let's go, this way, go in [crate], uh-ah stop, and look at me but it isn't 100% reliable especially outside. Knowing that his brain is still developing and his brain is simply somewhere else, made me feel better. I will still do short training sessions but at least now I know where to set my expectation and give him more time to just be a puppy, at least until that 7 months start. Still need better recall, loose lease walking, no nipping, and no jumping to greets other but otherwise he is a really good boy. Thank you so much! I need sleep.
I am exactly where you are, I have a 5 month Texas heeler with alot of energy (of course).. lol. He is super smart and loves to learn, i was struggling with leash walking (so i thought), now i get its okay, I'm going to relax about it all (except chasing the cat) and enjoy my puppy!!! We all just worry and want our puppies to be well behaved, I think alot of trainers take advantage of this. So glad i found this channel!!!
Appreciate the refinement of the "sleep in the bed" criteria. After our rescue dog got over his reactivity (completely because of your guidance) he is starting to be allowed in the bed. I think it makes him feel safe and improved our relationship. Who knows how he was treated in the 1.5 years before we got him. Thanks for all you do!

Also important to note that breed also has an impact on the duration and occurrence of each stage of maturity! For example, a golden doodle, cockerspaniel, chihuahua may go through their major fear period between 8 to 12 months. Whereas a Rottweiler, Cane Corso, St. Bernard may not hit that same period of maturity until 18 to 26 months. Adulthood may not come until 3 to 3.5 years old for the big breeds! My helper dog Rottie hit his major fear period at 17 months and lasted until 22 months! 🤭 Every dog is a little different 🥰
Thanks for saying this. My Rott was fearful at 12 months. Now he is teenage rebel at 16 months. We are setting hard boundaries for him. A disciplined dog is a free dog.
I wonder if that holds true for earlier phases too as mine actually seems to be learning some of the basics early at 4 months. I've had him 3.5 weeks and he's already learning leash manners, knows sit and stay and look at me, knows no bite, leave it, go get it and is learning drop it. He's a mini Aussiedoodle. He's not 100%. He sometimes forgets because he's a puppy and they are very much like raising a child with adhd, with energy level, impulsiveness, and attention span, but over all he's doing really really well.

I can definitely confirm that my GSD was a little psycho for the first year, was ill-mannered in public during the second year, and after that he finally started to mellow out after that.

Thank you! I just rescued a 10-month-old, 60-pound pit bull puppy and it’s clear his former owners did absolutely no socializing or training. He’s in board and train right now with an amazing trainer, but I’ve been worried about managing him when he gets home. He will be much better after 2 weeks of intense training, but still a 60-pound puppy. This video put my mind at ease that I can pick up where the trainer left off, especially when it comes to introducing him to my resident dog, a 5-year-old pit bull female who I rescued 2 years ago, and have a peaceful home.

Awesome video man. Found a starving 4 month old pup a few weeks ago. I think he’s ahead of the curve cuz he sits, waits for his food and does a lot of amazing things already. But good to know I shouldn’t be too freaked out about training atm. House training, sit wait for food and walking is all I’m worried about right now. He’s good at all those things already!!
Really appreciate this video. It helps alleviate the stress that I’ve felt with raising my new puppyand worrying that I’m behind. I really love this video, I'm just hitting 7 months with my american bulldog and he seems super worried about all strange things. Not necessarily scared but maybe, barking and huffing uncontrollably. I've been working a lot on exposure and afraid I won't have him properly socialized in time but it sounds like I'm not too late. When I got this puppy, I expected a much different training timeline. Potty training was the biggest struggle for months and took precedence over all other training for the most part other than some short sessions for sit, down, stand and working on making him ok with being handled (paws, mouth, etc). I feel like I'm doing the right things, always watching videos like this for timing and little tips and tricks to add to my toolbox. Honestly I'm finding dog training pretty fun although I also probably kind of suck at the moment. Your approach to loose leash walking has been a game changer for me. I didn't even realize I was doing it at first and was just excited about the success and then the light bulb came on later. Appreciate you man!
How long did it take to potty train? I have a 5 month old female Australian shepherd that pees in the same spot... We will have her outside all day long and as soon as we bring her in she will do it .. she's getting spayed next month so hopefully that plus getting used to the family and the house will help
@@InAllSeriousness88 it was 3 or 4 months because he ended up with a urinary tract infection that gave us added challenges. I work from home and kept him on a house line (dragging a small leash) so he was easy to grab and get outside quickly. Combined with taking him outside every 2 hours consistently and feeding consistently, encouraging water during potty breaks. That really seemed to help set a schedule that his body was more inclined to line up with. Schedule and frequency with consistent guidance seemed to be key
8 -13 weeks is crucial socialization period, after that becomes fear period. Sounds like you missed the window...

There's a Beckmans vid on barking & fear. I used his "I see it!"/'come" method on my maniacal Schip pup. She is a challenge and it took a LOT of work, but she's really good now.

My 11 month old golden has always been fearful. She will not walk on our street, but will walk trails. She’s suddenly beginning to be willing to try new things, things she’s always been afraid of, like the car and looking in boxes etc. It’s like she suddenly understands that we’re not trying to hurt her. The walks are even getting a bit better, when we can get her to exit the driveway. Once she gets out of the driveway, she has a great time. From what you said, we have another month of exposure time. I’m looking forward to getting her out more places. Thank you! You really are the best!

I've had a Golden before, I didn't have the same issues because I had other dogs at home and they took care of the biting issue, so it is new to me this time around. He is such a sweet dog otherwise, and I do have him on my bed with me but he is crated because I'm 67 now, and cannot take being shark-bait...but we are within inches of each other on the bed, and I'm grateful I did that part right. I'm 77 and have a 10 mo lab. I wore leather work gloves until the puppy teeth fell out, as well as working on no-bite, ok to licking, chew this not that.

Please check out select-a-dog for a list of questions to answer honestly and it spits out 5-7 breeds to choose from depending on your lifestyle. Keep in mind if you have small kids it's usually best to choose a more popular breed just because of stranger danger. More people will be asking questions if it's an unusual breed. Also, if you have an active family, do you want an active dog because you're going to be taking the dog everywhere or do you need a dog that can just chill with you once you get home? If you get a long haired dog or a dog that needs to be groomed, that's an additional expense every 6 - 8 weeks. Long haired dogs need to be brushed usually daily. My husband is a GSD person, but I can't take the long hair and both of us hate to vacuum. You could vacuum 5x/week and you would still find hair. Plus, if you take the dog in the car, their hair is all over the car - just something to keep in mind. We have Dobes, but my Dad used to raise them back when the first Magnum was popular, so I knew what we were getting into. I like my Dobes big. My boys are 100lbs. One is a therapy dog, the other one just graduated Intro to Nose Work. Check out your local dog club, get the kids involved if old enough - 4H, FFA possibly- some groups offer obedience classes, handling (potential scholarships, etc), maybe even Agility - check it out. Susan Garrett, a world class Agility trainer, videos are particularly helpful as well, especially if you have kids. Everything is on you tube for free. Hope that helps.

Thank you for this! I feel like less of a failure! I fostered a litter of 8 week old puppies and all dreams of being perfect went to hell! I ended up keeping the girl. She was so distraught when her brothers were adopted one by one that I let her sleep with us. She is just about 3 months and she sleeps with us and I have felt so guilty about it. But we sleep through the night - everything I have read or watched has said she should sleep in her crate and I am total failure. But she makes it through the night without an accident and all three of us get a good night’s sleep. 🤦🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️

Thank you so much for this video about age appropriateness and developmental milestones. My dog is turned 1 soon and I wish I'd seen this video earlier. She did Basic Obedience classes at 9 to 10 months. There was a noticeable surge in her strength and stamina and bursts of energy around 11 months so i started running with her more and simultaneously being a whole lot more focused on getting her to walk nicely on leash and not pulling, charging, wandering around. Training her to walk nicely is actually how I found your channel only just this week! Your channel is very helpful. I watched your loose leash walking videos and tried it yesterday and it worked. I have a 8.5 month old Malinois/Irish Setter Mix and I've been going out of my mind with her being scared to the point of shaking and covering up in pillows of all sounds while in our home/condo in Chicago. I have never re-homed and hate when I see someone re-homing their dog but I had thoughts of doing so (I don't think I could) until I watched this video. Total Game changer and I feel like a jerk for getting so aggraviated with this situation. It's been a tough raising, August 1st, I had to let my 18.5 year old go. I brought Riley in knowing his clock was running out of ticks, they were instant friends from April and it was a great thing to watch his finally months with her and the happiness Riley brought him. A breeder of Standard Xolos sold me a puppy saying he was 8 weeks. Looked at the paper when she left ...he was 7 weeks. After listening to this video of yours he slept in my bed(he is now 10 weeks) He was not mouthy when I put his leash on to take him out this morning!!❤ He really was an alligator mouth and constantly otherwise during the day.

I have a 7 month old Doberman/Labrador, and I've been watching training videos...all walking away feeling like I am doing things wrong while feeling quite defeated. I've been very discouraged. I usually see videos of trainers using puppies/dogs that are already trained, and it makes me feel like my puppy is completely out of control, and he'll never be like one of them. This video let me know that my puppy isn't bad; his brain is going through changes at different stages. I now know what I can expect from my puppy as he grows, and that I can relax a bit, and just enjoy him right now. I already have him doing some basic commands, and he's learning so fast! Thank you for these videos. They are game changers!

My Charlotte is now 20 weeks she loves to jump even up on me when I first arrive home from work we immediately go outside after potty and she jumps a d pulls on homemade zip line tug rope for about 45 min before I even touch her to give her a chance to burn energy we have been practicing learning not to bite me I place my finger in her mouth that she bite her own lip biting my hand is decreased greatly still she need reminders I a. Glad I found your videos I want to be a le to bring her to visit elderly in nursing home I work I was getting discouraged thinking I simply not doing something correct because she is not a calm lab pup. Now I am encouraged and going g to continue allowing her to go through these stages and continue to watch videos to learn to direct her through these stages Thank You

This video just saved my sanity after a last minute rescue of a puppy in awful conditions. I was getting so frustrated because my other dog is so well behaved. I could tell she knew she was doing something wrong but almost took joy in it like it was a game. Thinking of her in terms of a toddler is a game changer for my patience.

THANK YOU. This really was such an important and helpful video. I watch a lot of UA-cam Dog Trainers, and your videos are my absolute favorite. It made me feel much better about what to expect right now with a 9mo old GSP.
Just to put things in perspective, I thought my wife’s Weimaraner/lab mix was a little hyper, but she doesn’t hold a candle to the GSP. I have Fi collars on both of them and the Weimaraner averages around 8k-12k steps/day and the GSP is right around 33k/day. It’s rare he is ever under 25k steps. The BEST tool I have right now is an electric scooter.

Oh my goodness, I wish I had found you two months ago! Somehow, I knew instinctively what you are saying but because I watched so many other foofoo trainers I lost focus on letting my puppy be a puppy. He is 4 months now. So glad I finally found this channel.
I'm so grateful to have found this channel. I went to a private training session with someone to just get some guidance and it was just so regimented. My German Shepherd is only 10 weeks old. I've already had him for just over a month because he came to me from terrible circumstances at 5.5 weeks. He a pretty good little (big!) dude. Already has pretty decent recall. He can sit. He can lay down. He walks brilliantly with a leash, and pretty decently without one (for now). I've been doing mini training sessions with him since he came to me.
But the trainer said he would never see us again unless we used a prong collar. My dog picked up his leash with his mouth and he ripped it out of his teeth. It was really hardcore. He has Malinois, which is why I went to him. But I want my Shep to have fun. I want to teach him cool agility things when he's ready. It's like he forgot that this is a companion animal that I plan to take hikes with, and camping etc.
I wish you were local to me because I would go to you for guidance periodically.

Glad you said this I just got a 5-6mo old German shepherd. Was focusing on leash reactivity but not working so well and now I know why. Thankfully he’s not terrible at it. The slightest pull most times is enough for him to come back to me.
I’d really appreciate another video with more detail on how to practice management of our dogs while going through these phases. It’s easy to say get them out for hikes or to the beach etc but when they are getting bigger and don’t have a lot of training on them it gets increasingly difficult to take them certain places because the more they rehearse negative behaviours (pulling, barking or getting distracted by other dogs etc) the harder it can be to inhibit those later on. How do we best set ourselves up for healthy exposure outings with our young dogs(especially the 5mth-12mth phase) without developing bad habits and how do we deal with the inevitable scenarios that occur with other dogs or people without it causing negative impressions on our pups....like how do we manage our pups when they lose their mind because they just want to go play with the dog that just walked in the pet store or they meet on the trail? Is daycare a good or bad idea during this time or does it depend on the dog?
What are some good relationship building exercises to do with our puppies before “real training begins” and what are things that could be damaging to that relationship if done too soon?
Thanks for the video - it is very helpful to remember to not place too many expectations on our puppies but I think there is a lot more specifics in these areas that would be awesome to mine deeper!

I have a 10 month old pit bull. And these are the words I need to hear becausssseeeee….. I was about to give up. good to know I have been on the right track. I just put more emphasis on training at the wrong time…. She not bad just super energetic. This video confirms for me that she will slow down, with good habits if I stay consistent. Great video
Wow finally a video to help me train my 8 month old boston terrier. I am definitely expecting too much from her. She lacks complete focus on certain things like sit. She will stay, leave it, laydown. She is a hardcore leash puller on walks right now. I can't wait until she gets older to actually be able to get the other stuff like sit and nonpulling. Thank you for this video.

Wow!! I found your video when I needed it most!! I just got a 9 week old Weimaraner and I’ve been looking for information on what should I be teaching my pup at this stage. You should consider creating more content expanding on each of the growth stages. That would be so helpful to so many people!!
