perfect job that did! thanks for the technique I would have thought that would scratch it to death my chrome trim on my grill were pretty badly destorted after a winter of salt and storage. now I'll try this and see how it works! Thanks, Trey
Just saw this tip earlier this week. I bought some OOOO grade wire wool and used on the chrome covers on my Jaguar S Type. Amazing results. When my wife saw the result she said “wow”. That’s a result. Thanks from the Old man in England (locked down).
I tried 5000 grit wet paper on my 2011 Toyota Tacoma chrome on the top front end of the truck. When I got in better light there were millions of tiny scratches. So I went and got some SOS pads. Wet the pad, wet the area where I am working and very very lightly used the pad in a circular motion. That did it! I had tried the pad in straight lines but it didn't seem to be working. Kept on hosing things down as I worked, pad and chrome, and again very very lightly and it took out the scratches. Beautiful and thanks
Excellent! A simple low cost solution to a very common problem. Will be following advice (going slowly) and doing exactly as shown. Great vid.. Please continue good work.
This technique works perfectly! I replaced the lug nut covers on my 1995 Chevy S10 pickup and saw that the chromed plastic wheel hub covers were in sad shape. I tried cleaning them with soap and water, then polish both of which did absolutely nothing. Then I found this video and decided to give the technique a try. I bought a box of the standard soap filled steel wool pads. After wetting the chromed hub cover and steel wool pad I went to work over the kitchen sink. I knew right away that it was working. The steel wool is not course and the soap acts as a natural lubricant. I used a fairly light touch, because that is all that is needed. The end result is nothing short of amazing. The chromed plastic hub cover looks almost new, after I added a coat of wax. There was absolutely no scratching, but of course your results could be different. Thank you for posting this video.
Hey just wanted to say thank you for the video! It worked great on my 93 dodge cummins! The grill and some small parts are plastic chrome and they look awesome now! Never would have thought of it! 👌🏻
Man that looks awesome! Can't wait to try this on my VTX 1300C chromed plastic trim. I used aluminum foil on all the real chrome and it worked miracles but it scratched the chrome cover plastic. Thanks!
Plastic plated chrome is going to be oxidized quickly after that as it leaves micro scratches. There is also no protection. Like a polish. You can use windex and a microfiber towel to clean without fear of scratches. A little longer but won’t scratch. Or a light chrome polish to protect the area as well
Wow. That's incredible. I am looking to restore the chrome on one of my Cadillacs, and now I am thinking of trying it on my bike as well. It has alot of plastic chrome
hi Trey .. great video. May I ask if you have any tips on how to repair a chrome bumper guard piece that is scratched with a damaged surface i.e. the chrome coating has come off but the shape is intact.
Is there an easy way to make chrome plastic trim look like brushed aluminium? I have this matte silver trims in my car, and i want to order some extra trim strips from ebay but they are in chrome. Id really like to make the look like the original trim. Any way to reverse it without scratching of the "cheap" chrome paint?
Mine didnt come out quite perfect, it had some light spots. but not at all disapointed. it took away the cloudiness and made it shine much better. I sprayed the SOS pad with soapy water frequently
will this remove fine to medium scratches? my Cherokee has a chrome strip on top of bumper near cargo door that prior owner was not careful with and all scratched up. thx
I didn't have a 🆘 pad, so I tried fine steel wool and Dawn dish soap, it helped but I finished it with Meguires Ultimate Compound first, then Meguires Ultimate Polish, then Meguires Gold Class Wax. It's hard to beat Meguires products. My plastic chrome is 32 years old but looks Great now. Thanks for the video.😎 👍
I used fine steel wool with water. He’s right...use a soft-ish touch. But it works PERFECTLY!! And no visible scratches. The bike I’m cleaning is one that’s been sitting outside in a very humid climate, so the plastic was fairly pitted.

Sean Harold, I used S.O.S. Reusable soap Filled Steel Wood Pads like you might use to wash pots and pans. In my opinion the soap helps to lubricate the whole process.
Will the SOS pads take out scratches that are already in place? I'm asking for a set of wheels I have. It is the plastic chrome over the wheel but the outside is crazy scratched I'm guessing from previous washing. Thanks.
