this is simply amazing. Imagine telling this man in the 1600's that one day on a platform called youtube, 400 years later people would be listening on computers through headphones. Amazing, what an honor to be human. What an honor to be alive during such an opportune time to relish in the history of arts, of all kinds.
From the first moment I heard this celestial music, I was convinced it was the most important and profound music I would ever hear. 40 years later I do not think otherwise. Written by the composer to the Virgin Mary after his wife of many years died, written by a composer covered in boils and pustules, written by a man who knew suffering and hoped for redemption. Utterly amazing. Utterly dazzingly. Utterly unexpected and beyond most anything another human being could conceive of (except Shakespeare's King Lear, almost an exact contemporaneous composition)
Great comment. "beyond what any other human being could conceive". I like how you bring together the supernatural achievements of king lear with Monteverdi 's Magnificat. I'd add into that the last three operas of Richard Wagner. Especially Parsifal. Best wishes, Noel
I love the explorative nature of Monteverdi's music. Renaissance purity punctuated with audacious baroque exuberance. All the little contrasting sections make it so adventurous and exciting, plus it's so accessible.
Com a regência de sir John Eliot Gardener, o coro transmite a complexidade e o esplendor desse Magnificat. Porque ele brilha. Os intérpretes nos oferecem uma magna aula de música. Grata a quem enviou.
Way back in the day, when I was just learning about classical music - baroque and renaissance was lumped in there too - someone told me that Monteverdi is the one early-music composer that will always retain the power to astound and astonish to the present day. And this was the recording on which I first heard this performed.
I was making a reasearch about Cloudio Monteverdi and came here to listen to one of his musics, this was my first video and I must say, this song made shills all over me. Truly a masterpiece, a true work of art made in music.

The pinnacle of the bridge between Renaissance and the Baroque. Brilliant composer.

It isn't really that simple.
Truly brilliant indeed!
