That looks like a quality jacket and I love the gold lining. But blimey! I don’t have the garage for half a dozen bikes even if I had the wherewithal, and now I realise I’d need a jacket for each type! Plus I guess different helmets! We are all living vicariously through you, mate... 😉
Just checking in to say that I recently bought one of these. Upon receipt it was a bit too tight, especially on the arms. I called Goldtop and they invited me to their new shop which was not yet open. They let me try on some different sizes, showed me around and were all-round nice guys. The replacement jacket fits perfectly and gives me more confidence than I ever felt while riding in textiles. The shop sells coffee, so could be a good ride-out destination too!
The review mentions that the jacket features a back protector, shoulder and elbow impact protectors that have been tested to standards and are CE marked, but nothing about the jacket itself having been tested for abrasion resistance, seam strength and tear strength (impact protectors are of little benefit if the garment into which they are fitted flies apart on contact with the road!). All motorcyclists’ clothing, gloves, footwear as well as impact protection have been required to be independently tested and certified since the 21st of April 2018. I contacted Goldtop to check this out and a very helpful guy name Joe informed me that several of their jackets passed testing some time last year, but “CE certification” has been held up, with the additional demands on certification bodies created by the COVID-19 crisis adding to the delay. He said the jacket reported on here by TMF has passed the highest, EN 17092-2:2020 “AAA” classification (although from my experience in this field I’d expect a leather jacket of the reported quality to be easily capable of meeting the far more stringent EN 13595-2 abrasion test).
Goldtop have been around donkeys years. I remember having a pair of their motorcycle boots in the 70s, came up to just under my knee, beautifully made. They are one of the top leather motorcycle kit manufacturers.
Been busy so a day behind with the comment! Nice jacket, honest review as always, entertaining way to present "A Jacket". Think you should take a tumble in it to show the protective capacity!! (no right channel for me either!) Cheers Andy
I still have my Wolf leather jacket from the 1970's, so nothing retro about it. Black, padded elbows and shoulder, maroon quilted liner and £40 to buy if I remember correctly.
£40 wow - nice. Mines black with red quilted leather shoulders and red lower straps: I think it was £25 in 1975. I rarely bike in it as there was no armour in those days and it's too tight to put pads in. I'm just happy it still fits....just.
I have a Richa café racer jacket, but it’s taking some time to break in, I’ve had it just over a year now and it’s starting to soften and mould to me now, Cheers Andy good reveal will have a look at the Goldtop jackets, love the out takes.😆🤣😂👍
A GoldTop review! Fantastic. I bought some of their Quilted Cafe Racer gloves which are brilliant. Looking to get their 'The Patrol' jacket to go with it - seen that one in person? Has the belted waist, that one. Looks well-worth the scratch to me. Glad you like your jacket (thinking about getting my wife one of those in black to match her 2019 Street Twin).
Yes I have two pairs of their gloves too - love ‘em! Not familiar with “The Patrol” jacket but I’m willing to bet it’s good based on the other products of theirs I have....
@@TheMissendenFlyer Cheers! Yes, 'The Patrol' on their site appears to be a reproduction of their original from 1971 - sort of a long-fit jacket, with a belt. I like my official Triumph kit, but it's ventilated - the GoldTop stuff is mostly solid-panel, so it's a tad more weather-resistant it looks like. Thanks for the endorsement of their gear! Glad to hear from an experienced source on their stuff.

Nothing to do with jacket but thought of an old bike garage (hut really!) in Great Missenden in the 1970s. I lived in Great Kingshill but use to go to an old chap in a hut off the High St in Missenden where it was stacked full of bike bits, 1930s signs etc, to obtain bits for my NSU Quickly! Probably before your time TMF but does anybody remember the hut/shed? I remember the chap use to run a Scott Squirrel.
TheMissendenFlyer - Thanks TMF, I have lived in Somerset last 40 years but do visit Missenden now and again, any snippets of info would be interesting!
Completely off topic question, behind you I see a horizontal cross bar on your garage door. 🤔 Is that a device to prevent the door from being blown in during storms ? (Similar to what we use here in my hurricane prone area) Or is it a “theft deterrent” to inhibit vehicles from being removed through the doorway?
Hi TMF - thanks for another great review. If you're into British retro stuff then check out Davida Helmets. They are really high quality kit and would go brilliantly with this jacket and with your RE and Speed Twin. I wear one when I'm on board my Bonneville - looks the mutts. All the best.
Like the out takes! Would like to see some shots sitting on the bike as the jacket looks a bit long and on the large side (maybe you've lost a bit of weight with all the gardening?) - in the past I've found leather jackets rides up to the point where the shoulders of the jacket touch the underside of my helmet which then squeaks - have a guess as to how annoying that is!
That jacket looks very similar in style to the first jacket I ever bought made by Lewis Leathers in 1983 except the Lewis jacket uses thicker leather and the zips are much bigger. Think I paid around £200 for it from their shop in Sheffield which closed long ago but I see they still have a shop in London. It's virtually as good now as it was back then, all zips/studs working, no signs of any seam weakness and the leather is still supple and it was made in ENGLAND! I've got newer (lesser) jackets but I tend to ride in textile kit these days. Might have to dust off the Lewis (yes, it still fits.....just!) to compliment the Street Scrambler.
Audio aside, cracking video. I also noticed your new branded Gilet. Question for you: can you do a collarless version? That'd be better under biking jackets.
@@TheMissendenFlyer the reason I mention it is that my RST gilet has a zip on the side of the neck, which better than up the front under a bike jacket, but collarless would be far better all round and could be a nice niche product you could sell, therefore making a bit more profit for the channel.
Good looking jacket... And I was only thinking the other day that my brown RST roadster jacket is the wrong colour for my new red triumph.... Can you do a video on how to convince your wife you need to spend another £400 on a new jacket!
I do love the idea of wearing this kind of jacket on the V85 TT Touring. I've worn synthetic (jacket and leggines) stuff for so long, I'm of an age now, that I'd liken to wearing something timeless/ classic (warm).. what do you recommend for leg-wear with this jacket? How does this jacket stand up to driving rain?.. or will I have to use the olde rain jacket for the heavy rain?
You'll need proper waterproofs in heavy rain, this is only good for light downpours. On the legs I wear riding jeans with this jacket...video on them coming soon!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thank you for your reply MSF (don't know your name, so MSF will have to do :) ), I have used a waterproof for my synthetic jacket when travelling through Europe last year (2019). What leggings would you recommend (other than synthetic) for traveling?
I thought something was strange after fiddling with my volume control! Then I realised, this presentation was to brought to us in 'left-side-O-sound' Ground breaking as ever TMF! I ordered the gold top gloves after your review and really like them , so I'd guess the Jacket is just as good. Good old fashioned British quality. The out takes. That image of TMF just running these off in one take u tube perfection shattered. So you are mortal! One question, does this jacket zip to anything? As ever, excellent content!
As my Triumph-branded jacket (made in China - boo) was becoming tatty, I decided to treat myself to a new jacket, and I really liked the look of this, especially as it is made in England - not something you see too much of these days. I looked at all their jackets on the web site, and had a short list of three, but the jacket that I liked best was this '76 Cafe Racer. I duly ordered one in size 40, being a 39 size. When it arrived it was very snug both across the chest and down the arms. Then the problem: I inserted the armour into the sleeves, and the jacket became impossibly tight. I called Goldtop, and eventually Kasey confessed that they had made the arms too narrow. The reason was this: the original design used leather patches at the elbow and shoulders, but this did not comply with modern safety standards, so pockets were introduced into the sleeves and shoulders, but they forgot to compensate for the extra width/bulk of the armour, a problem now corrected. The latest jackets have this update, so If you order one make sure that you ask for the newer jackets (personally, I would call), otherwise you will have a problem. BTW, I have very skinny arms, and I had a problem, so if you're in any way sizeable you will too. That said, they did send me a full refund, which means that the company is reputable.
@@TheMissendenFlyer One more gripe: I was charged £12.99 for shipping (package 3kg+), whereas I should have been charged only £9.99 as the package weighed 2.9kg exactly (i.e. < 3kg). These charges are clearly shown on the "Shipping Rates" on the Goldtop web site. I know it's only £3, but it's the principle.
Does the zip catch the tank? That is one of the things i always watch out for. Triumph Barbour were making a waxed jacket that had buckles to the side and zip covered up with a soft stud at the bottom. Even Belstaff wax jackets have buckles at the front which look to me as if they’d scratch the tank..
Great review and nice jacket. I agree about having the right clothing for the type of bike you're riding. On Tuesday I had a RE Interceptor for the day (nice bike but a bit under powered for me) and I felt daft with my Dainese leathers and VR replica lid! I'm looking for some touring kit, what would you recommend? I'd prefer something waterproof so I don't have to carry separate boil in the bag stuff! Thanks
Hi , really interested in one of these jackets , how is the sizing of the goldtop jackets , true to size or do you have to go a size up and can you say if the shoulder and elbow patches double up on the leather in these areas or is it just padding under the patch. Thanks .
Any recommendations for a good summer jacket? I was out riding yesterday with my Wolf Titanium jacket, lining out and vents open - I was boiled! I love the jacket (especially on a cold day) but could do with something a bit cooler.
I have a mesh Ducati/dainese jacket with full armour including alloy shoulder protection that is great for summer riding in Australia. It is dramatically cooler than perforated leather. Goodluck
Thank you, TMF! Two questions: 1. Does it have a zip to connect to pants? 2. You mentioned that it keeps you warm *and dry* - so I assume the leather copes with rain reasonably well?
I know this review was about the jacket but I like the TMF vest you had on underneath. Can’t find it in your store. Is it a new item you’re trying out or is it on the way?
How does it get on in the rain? The open zipper looks like it would invite wind and rain. Do they offer matching pants too? (I should check the link... :^) )
Panigale - Batman costume with accentuated six pack moulding, Intercepter - this leather jacket, jeans and and open face lid (same for Speed Triple), Street Triple I like to dress up as a french maid (heels can be a problem), BMW GS the full Charlie and Ewan, Honda CRF off road I like to be naked.....

It's a theft deterrent - video coming soon!
Hi TMF - thanks for another great review. If you're into British retro stuff then check out Davida Helmets. They are really high quality kit and would go brilliantly with this jacket and with your RE and Speed Twin. I wear one when I'm on board my Bonneville - looks the mutts. All the best.
Yes I have been checking them out - a little pricey but look lovely!
Noted!
Only Goldtop product I have is their Submariner jumper and that is seriously warm under my Belstaff jacket!
Yes it’s good quality kit isn’t it....
Audio aside, cracking video.
I also noticed your new branded Gilet. Question for you: can you do a collarless version? That'd be better under biking jackets.
Err, I'll see what we can do!
Ah now that is a challenge - good luck!
Common issue most of us face. A video would be helpful!
My summer gloves are Goldtop, 40 years old this year!
They're pretty good then!
Blimey TMF, looks like you Photoshopped your head on. Nice looking jacket, great vid as always.😄
It does! ....hilarious!!!
No it doesn't zip to anything except yourself!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Ah, so no short zip at the back! Fair enough!
Crikey - what a shame, I’m a huge fan of Gold Top stuff and it’s usually top notch in my experience (quality and service)....
Is this jacket warm enough for british winter or maybe a waxed cotton jacket from Merlin is a better choice due to thermal layer? Thanks
I wear a puffa jacket under it in really cold weather….
I’ve had no issues but you’re not the first to mention it....
TheMissendenFlyer - it’s why we have tank pads i guess. My dealer assures me I won’t need a tank pad on the Speed Twin.
Worn famously by Ralph Lauren in vintage distressed brown, his personal favourite.
Really?
Nice jacket for the bikes that you said you ride whilst wearing it. We’re you wearing a new range of TMF clothing? And the new hippy image 😂 👍
Yes I am! Checkout my website for all your merch needs - and be careful, the ladies will love you for it!! themissendenflyer.com
Good review and British made cheers TMF
Thanks for watching!
trying to buy a new pair of motorbike jeans suitable to wear with a bike similar to the enfield and recommendations?
Oh yes lots - video coming up on that very subject!
Would be better if waist buckles were reversed so not to bend back after riding..
Thanks
Any fully laminated textiles are good - check out my reviews! Oxford advanced rider wear great value, Richa brilliant but more costly....
Hi , really interested in one of these jackets , how is the sizing of the goldtop jackets , true to size or do you have to go a size up and can you say if the shoulder and elbow patches double up on the leather in these areas or is it just padding under the patch. Thanks .
Sizing seems normal....
Much like others great video and enjoyable with the outtakes, although occasionally I struggle to see an issue with the cut version 😂
Cheers Lee - glad you think that!
Your very ANIMATED these days matey
nice one. I've been looking at the Goldtop jackets. Not sure I can justify another jacket to the missus, but if I could I'd get one of the Goldtops.
@TMF with beard! Very chic and cool 😎
Short lived - it's gone now....my hipster days are over!
Any recommendations for a good summer jacket? I was out riding yesterday with my Wolf Titanium jacket, lining out and vents open - I was boiled! I love the jacket (especially on a cold day) but could do with something a bit cooler.
Review of my summer jacket coming soon - stay tuned!
I have a mesh Ducati/dainese jacket with full armour including alloy shoulder protection that is great for summer riding in Australia. It is dramatically cooler than perforated leather. Goodluck
What's the leather jacket in the background? That looks nice, too
Not as good as the Gold Top!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Oh come on, do share!
Thank you, TMF! Two questions: 1. Does it have a zip to connect to pants? 2. You mentioned that it keeps you warm *and dry* - so I assume the leather copes with rain reasonably well?
Yes and yes...within the realms of normality, clearly leather isn't as waterproof as say a three layer laminate...
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks TMF!
Great looking jacket, covered every angle.
That is a really nice jacket!
I agree!
I know this review was about the jacket but I like the TMF vest you had on underneath. Can’t find it in your store. Is it a new item you’re trying out or is it on the way?
It should be coming soon via my website the Missenden flyer.com - you’re right, this was a trial one I have been trying....
They do make really nice gear love their gloves too..
Agreed!
must have read my mind. Though I am looking for a brown leather jacket. Perhaps one to follow?
Ooh, now there's a thought!
How does it get on in the rain? The open zipper looks like it would invite wind and rain. Do they offer matching pants too? (I should check the link... :^) )
They don’t do leather underpants as far as I know - I suspect that’s a different kind of supplier!
Can you tell us what costume goes with each bike?
Panigale - Batman costume with accentuated six pack moulding, Intercepter - this leather jacket, jeans and and open face lid (same for Speed Triple), Street Triple I like to dress up as a french maid (heels can be a problem), BMW GS the full Charlie and Ewan, Honda CRF off road I like to be naked.....
Wow, I had Gold Top boots in 1978!
Andy how do you find the zip tassels?do they seem strong/and long lasting...
Sure do - best zips you can buy apparently!
I have had jackets(love jackets) were the tassels, have pulled off.
The liner looks cool, love the colour..
Will have to sneak one passed our lass ..!
How about discussing various Textile jackets?
Have you seen my other reviews??
Hey what about the back of the jacket I assume it has one (Joking) what about the length and waist band protection???
All good - sorry I missed it from the review...my bad.
Great jacket! Can you do a part 2 with it fully zipped up and you wearing some Levi’s jeans in particular?? Show full front and backsides too
Love your videos!
Ooh I like it when you get all kinky on me Sam!
Still waiting on that video request 😡😡
I miss having a, (what i call standard bike jacket) my early kit was made by wolf and it actually wore out through many years of use. Thanks for the nod to the gold top kit.... I'm definitely interested
Still got my Waddington jacket from '76. Bit tatty now though.
