By losing the love of his life he has lost his love for life. Our hero has lost appreciation for his work because it reminds him of their broken bond. Notice he's the last one to destroy the cups, meaning he has regained the power whilst she actually shuns the pile, no longer interested in him because it was never about the cups for her. A very powerful ending, I must say.
