What you call the "10 year test" I call the "Down the Road Perspective." I used it to know when to quit teaching, when to sell my business, when to get divorced. The other helpful test I call "Freedom or Fetters." Basically, I "try on" the decision as if I've made it and imagine my day as if I am vested in that decision. Then, I "feel" within my body if it feels like freedom (ah, happy, joy) or if it feels like fetters (ugh, bound and tied). This is a visceral way to determine your path. Of course, I used all these, and Marie's "Ask for Guidance" to become a Life Coach. :-) By the way, Marie, glad to discover you. YOU ROCK! Cate Schultz (Mighell)
The dip is an amazing book. It helped me get off the "ledge" and re-commit to my purpose. After reading it, I felt even more energized as as excited as when I first started my business 3 years ago.
When to commit and when to quit. I think this is a situation that many people can relate and it is like we have to make a big decision that may not only affect us but our people we love. I totally agree when Marie said we have to look and think long term to identify what is our ultimate goal, what we are really after. If we can recognise that the project, the job,the short term goal,so and and so forth will not matter in five years or ten years,so just feel comfortable to quick. We should remember that it's the result ,not the activities that matter
I asked the same thing to my dad once, he said this: You should keep fighting for your dream as long as it is still important to you and as long as you are not harming others along the way.
Love your answer!! it really helps :) I was in a similar situation last summer. I had been at my job for a little over a year when I knew I was going to need more money for college. The path that I was deciding to choose I knew that I needed more savings. I decided to look for a second job (temporary) to work during the summers. After searching for a couple of months, I finally got the second job, I was so excited and happy! My other employer knew I was searching for more work and said they were okay with it. As time went on, they began to treat me really wrong by talking down to me, blaming me for business problems, and ultimately telling me that I was not good enough anymore. I had to decide to either quit and stick with my new employer or stick it out, so I could receive the "scholarship" they had promised me if I stayed. It wasn't easy, but I decided to quit. No amount of money was worth the abuse and treatment I was receiving. I earned the "scholarship" money they were offering (and then some) within six months from quitting!! (funny how that works! lol) I am so happy with my decision and have made some of the best friends (family) in my whole life working at the new job. So Quitting CAN be a POSITIVE thing!:) You just have to have the courage to do so!!! thanks again!!! --- AAR
Having to choose between a terrible job and the freedom to pursue your dream is one of the hardest decesion ever, I think. You know, the job gives us money and security but simultanously the pressure having to deal with bad bosses and aggressive customers. I was that situation 2 years ago.It was not easy but I took the courage and decided that my life is more important than money. There are many other ways to earn money but I have one life to live and do not want to waste it.My decision was made after I had read one book by Tony Robbins.
Thank you Marie for this Big Juicy Answer! I've been in such situation in the past year and did choose to quit eventually and I made a positive quiting, that's real power indeed! not only I get way more energy for making other projects then , but mostly I got a realy great lesson to share. Never do ANYTHING out of scarsity, stick to your gut feeling and go for it. Thank you again, Marie, I feel such a relief hearing this from you, because it's the first time I hear this from someone else than my inside voice. You're awesome!
Thank you for another great video, Marie. What sometimes really helps me when I just can't decide what to do is to visualize different aspects of my personality (inner child, inner adult, higher self, etc.) and ask each what it wants. This makes it easier to see where the inner conflict is coming from (often unhealed childhood wounds), and usually there is a way to bring the perspectives into unity with each other. I often experience that once I've found peace with myself, I no longer see one option as better than the other. I am simply a human being on a journey, free to choose and explore whatever I want. Other than that, I definitely think being true to ourselves is the most important thing on this path. And: If something is REALLY important, it will come back even if we decide to quit. Thanks again Marie & have a wonderful week!
Love this. Things are not always easy. I remember a couple of years ago doing something similar. I sat myself down and asked myself. If I get 10 years down the road and I give up on this, how will I feel? So pleased I stuck with my dream. It's so important to let things go when you can see it's not working for you within that dream. Thanks Marie
On my journey to Quit! I've been in the makeup industry for about 4 years. Worked hard, committed and set aside work-life balance to establish a career. Now that I'm in my early 30's, I've realized my priorities and 10-year vision have changed. Having more time with my husband, intellectual stimulation and the desire to collaborate and contribute have encouraged me to pivot. I'm self-educating myself about Digital Marketing during my days-off and have never been more enthusiastic. I used to "hate reading" but have found doing the opposite lately. I'm hooked and hoping for the very best with this new commitment! How did I hear about this video? From Neil Patel's Blog on how to infuse humor when storytelling. Also another compelling content you've pushed recently? Your interview with Gary Vaynerchuk on "Jab, Jab, Jab, Right Hook", which prompted me to purchase and has been such an amazing read. The power of organic, authentic content is truly astounding! Thank you Marie!
Thank you Marie. Very well expressed and encouraging as always. We formed a 501c3 last year have had a successful (in numbers) weekly broadcast radio program (67 episodes on 8 stations), that is also podcasted each week on Itunes and our website. Our struggle has been financial. While the theme of our show is well accepted and leads in the ratings, we struggle for capital to put quality win-win products together to get it to a "sustainable" level financially. Iterating as we go, we have tried, stalled, learned, retooled, using talents from friends and acquaintances, and connections who align with our cause. We have a core group of supporters and are grateful for them. After 15 months we are beginning to see resources and are developing products. I think the key has been for me, staying connected to our original "mandate" and "keeping" it honest, while at the same time being open to new and innovative ways and ideas that we can DO. It's been tough, but I love it, and am scared. I'm 62, and this is my second "business" (the first was a successful management consulting venture.) We would very much appreciate prayers and encouragement as we move forward. Jeff Pelletier "God's Work in Progress"
Jeff, thanks for sharing this. So inspirational and honest!! I pray Gods favor over you like never before in 2015. Stay innovative like you said and keep the faith, and just wait for those flood gates to fly open!! Looking forward to hearing all about it :) Blessings, Janelle
Thanks Marie once again. Your advice is valuable for me. I'm at a crossroad choosing between my gut feelings, to quit, and my mentor asking me not to. I do trust both. Your advice has kept me focused.
I'm in the same position it's such a coincidence reading your comment, my mentor also is making this decision harder for me asking me to stay on although I know in my heart I have to move on. I'm just concerned our relationship will not be the same anymore. I put in my two weeks and I'm just making sure to leave on a positive note with everyone. I am confident it will all work out in the end.
Awesome video (especially for me right now)! I'm still not sure what to do, but I definitely know I need to reevaluate things as far as school and work goes. Thank you Marie! Here's to hoping I'll find out what to do soon!
I have been doing some soul search on this topic too. I think of myself as somebody who doesn't regret decisions, if I feel I may look back and think I didn't give myself a chance then I know, but I guess that's exactly what the 10 year strategy is for ;) Thanks!
This is like the story of my life. Recently I had to make a tough decision to quit a project. Now I'm trying to find my place in another. I'd be interested to check out that book. Thanks Marie!
Really appreciate this short vid from Marie Forleo... it's inevitable that something's gonna pop up and make us reassess what we're doing! Awesome advice thanks Marie Forleo #entrepreneurship
I think it might be helpful to think about the no turning point. Something like by that time this thing I'm expecting for doesn't happen then I'll quit and if it happens I should continue with this project. I really believe that it's really important to think about it before, in advance with calm and not in the heat of the moment when sometimes is difficult to think about it clearly . Talk with someone that you trust is always a good idea to help to decide first the why's and then the when's and how's. Well, at least it help me in the past when I have to make a decision. I hope it helps someone.
Hi Marie, love this video. thank you. does it matter to me 10 years from now? yes. ask for guidance. constantly and firstly always through your video. love what you do marie. keep them coming!
Love you girl. Your delivery here was awesome but wasn't its usual fire-filled self. Hope you're okay, and thank you as always for the amazing/helpful/actionable advice (extra snaps for mentioning 'badonkadonk'! lol).
I liked your outfit so very much...😍 You always seems to me so inspiring. I am gonna start my own business soon. Your words mean to me a lot. Thanks dear💛🖤💌
