Ms. Goldie Hawn's performance in Private Benjamin was incredible. A very well deserved Oscar Nomination for Ms. Hawn. If memory serves me correctly? Ms. Hawn also Produced Private Benjamin. Ms. Hawn has had one of Hollywood's most successful, and recognised careers. Personally, what I've learned/discovered about Ms. Hawn is that during a Barbara Walters interview, Ms. Hawn displayed slight embarrassment for expressing sadness/emotions over the loss of her loving Father/Mr. Hawn. I deduced from that interview with Ms. Hawn, that perhaps being an incredibly gifted/talented actress, whom depicts a multitude of emotions, can also feel awkward when expressing real felt emotions. Much respect from Canada, Ms. Hawn!
This is a perfectly played comic scene. As great as Goldie is (you can read her every thought in just her eyes) the others are just as good: the mother with her kiss-kiss-kiss on Goldie's cheek and the way she shakes out Goldie's raincoat to get the rain off; the father turning his cigarette away when he kisses her cheek; captain Lewis's barely concealed hatred for Private Benjamin (watch Goldie's facial expression when Lewis pats her shoulder). The great Eileen Brennan and Sam Wanamaker are gone, but I hope Goldie and Barbara Barrie know how much their work is appreciated.
I wonder why they didn't approve of her going into the Army? Is that because it was so different for a woman to do that back in the 80's? And because it was so different, her father couldn't handle that and what his friends would think, so he and her mother told people she was in a mental ward? Wow................

The irony and contrast of this scene, in its context, stood out so strongly in my mind. Captain Lewis rode her so hard in Basic training and made her life a hellish experience. Always spoke to me this film. It was my mums video but I think I watched it more than her, as a kid! What makes it funny is it's so spot on. With the over-dramatic parents and Sam Wanamaker is so good as the condescending Dad. She chose not to back to comfort and to find her own way.
